Beyonce’s Levi’s Commercial Features New Jersey Diner Bendix Diner | Eater NY

"A mid-century-style diner in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey that was described in one passage as a “40-year-old restaurant” but is also noted to have originally opened in 1947, with the Diakakis family taking over in 1985. The co-owner and longtime operator, John Diakakis — who is legally blind — says the building “was very, very old,” and that he had been trying to update the fire suppression systems since 2020 but that would’ve required extensive construction for an old building that was “almost at this point, falling apart at the seams.” He sums up the struggle succinctly: “It was just an uphill battle.” After coping with his mother’s death in fall 2024 and pressure from the city over outdated systems, he slimmed the menu to simpler items like sandwiches and salads (which didn’t go over well with a crowd used to diner pancakes, burgers, and French toast), then reverted to cooking with the out-of-code system until the health department forced a closure in January. The space also drew attention from location scouts in the summer of 2024 and appears in a Levi’s commercial titled “Refrigerator,” in which Beyoncé pulls out a very cold denim shirt from an iced-tea/condiment fridge; Diakakis recalls tight security during filming, noting “If she had to worry about me taking pictures, she never would have had a picture taken.” The diner has been used in films including Jersey Girl, Boys on the Side, and The Many Saints of Newark. Co-ownership with two siblings — one of whom Diakakis says was causing issues while he was caring for his mother — has complicated matters, and he is looking to sell amid “lowball” offers; NorthJersey.com reports that it’s listed for $2.5 million. On his personal plans he says, “If it was just my inheritance and my property,” he would want to keep the place going, but “as much as my family owned it, I just always felt like I wanted to go in there and make my living and take care of my children. I’ve always been approachable with the public because it is a unique situation that I’m totally blind and am waiting on people.” He adds that “I think we’re just going to hang in there and not make any kind of crazy decisions,” and that he hopes to find work somewhere warmer and continue in the restaurant atmosphere he loves: “That would be my ultimate goal.”" - Nadia Chaudhury

Why Jersey Is the Diner Capital of the Country - Eater NY

"Bendix Diner, built by the Master Diner Company of Pequannock, opened in 1947, is located in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. It is constructed of stainless steel and has been featured in six movies and numerous TV commercials, including one starring Ray Charles. It sits in a triangular parking lot penned in with idle trucks, with a neon coffee cup on the top boasting 'Good Coffee.' The short stack came with real butter, tasted of buttermilk, and were fluffier than previous examples. The patty melt was miraculous, with good ground beef cooked to medium over flame, smoky taste, and caramelized onions on rye toast. The homemade hash was good but not quite up to Miss America’s. Our waiter was blind and turned out to be the owner, whose three sons and mother are also involved in the operation." - Robert Sietsema

The 29 Best Diners in America | Eater

"A stainless-steel, no-frills classic sitting literally in the middle of a highway, this 1947 diner is cinematic in appearance and atmosphere—leather seats, glass ketchup bottles, and warm staff—and has become a trucker and traveler favorite. The Trucker’s Special (three pancakes, two eggs, four strips of bacon) typifies the generous, comforting plates served amid a storied, film-and-commercial-friendly backdrop." - Eater Staff

Incredible pancakes, delicious breakfast, trackers’ special breakfast, beef, hash, and eggs are all super delicious. The blind owner is friendly and cracked jokes with us. Famous stander lives up to all the great reviews. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a great experience and great food.

This is a hidden Gem. Do not be fooled by outside looks of this restaurant the inside is very clean, the service is great, and the food was amazing. I would have to say that by far this has been the best diner I have eaten at. Again, I will say the food was amazing and very affordable. I was surprised at the amount of food served, the amazing taste and the price. Every time I travel to New Jersey I have to stop by and eat. Once again came back to this hidden Gem. Never disappoints me. The best food in Jersey.

Solid NJ diner with lots of quirky charm. Loved the old menus on the walls and listening to the chatter of the regulars. John, our server was kind and attentive. We ordered disco fries, pancakes and the corned beef hash with home fries. Everything was delicious, especially the corned beef hash. Diner home fries can be hit or miss but these were excellent

Bendix is a classic and iconic American Diner with a great food at very affordable prices. They have a full menu and breakfast all day. The lunch meat was fresh, and the sandwich was well built. The staff were very friendly, and the story of the owner is incredible. If you’re in the area stop it is worth while to stop by.

I had heard good things about this place and finally made my way to the diner in the middle of Route 17 Hasbrouck Heights. First impression was negative. Missing letters from signs, worn out decor and an empty diner, save for 1 fellow at the counter. But that guy was friendly, and seemed to enjoy his meal. So I said let's try it, and ordered French toast and Taylor ham. My buddy had a cheeseburger deluxe. Might have been best French toast I've had. Batter was slightly sweet for an unusual but excellent taste, and the bread was exceptionally moist and fresh. Taylor ham was fine. My buddy enjoyed his cheeseburger as well. Very friendly service too. This place isn't for everyone, but the food is a priority, no doubt, and I'm sure there are many many devoted regulars. Interesting experience.

I love diners. Especially ones that look like they haven’t changed and outta movie. Bendix was awesome! Home fries have been the best I’ve had and Johnny’s service is second to none!

I’ve been wanting to go to this diner for such a long time it’s now been marked off my bucket list of New Jersey diners. I had to go to first time there. I had the trucker special breakfast. The Bacon was cooked perfectly. The eggs were cooked perfectly. the pancakes were probably the fluffiest pancakes I’ve ever had. My mom ordered a salad a Cobb salad it was probably one of the best salads. She said she’s ever had on top of that. I really really want people to know. Yes, it’s a very small diner, but the parking lot even smaller, but you need to add this to your bucket list. You need to stop by here one time and have some food 10/10 100/100 YOU MUST GO TO THIS DINER

Finally tried this place and had a wonderful day. John made our brunch date even more meaningful date with small talk. His family makes people happy with perfectly cooked food. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the other dishes were cooked really well too. The 2nd son, Dmitri is a passionate and talented chef.
