How the Danish Kringle Became a Wisconsin Christmas Classic | Eater

"One of the original family-run bakeries that has stewarded the local kringle-making legacy for decades, it traces its roots to founder Laurits Bendt Bendtsen and is cited alongside other long-running shops as a keeper of the city's Danish baking traditions and the oval, fruit-and-nut–filled pastry that defines the town's culinary identity." - Trisha Gopal

Talking about stepping back in time. This place seems to be the place to get the “original” Kringle in town. Everything is still made by hand and fresh daily. They do have the best Kringle! They use real butter and you can definitely tell the difference in their food. It a must stop if visiting Racine, Wi I can’t believe I didn’t take a picture of the Kringle 🤦‍♀️. It didn’t last long enough to get one. ** we went back for seconds when our guest arrived.

Google
Kringles galore, chocolate mountains, spinach and feta puffs, cinnamon buns. You name it, it's amazing and well priced. Very friendly staff that are very knowledgeable. When we visit family in Wisconsin this place is always at the top of the list to visit. I absolutely recommend it, I would be looking like the mayor in "cloudy with a chance of meatballs" if I lived nearby...

Google
Bendtsens is my favorite bakery in Racine. Whether I’m stopping in for a quick treat, or ordering ten Kringle like I did this week, the baked goods, service and employees are always top notch. I’ve always left with a smile on my face. Hands down, this is the best bakery in Racine and not just because of the kringle.

Jason Bennett

Google
I left Racine a long time ago but I grew up here and everyone from here knows that Bendstens is the last remaining bakery that bakes the way their grandparents did. This generational business still bakes on the same oven they baked on a generation ago. Their delectable desserts aren’t made in a factory like their competitors. While all the Other bakeries in town have succumbed to become production facilities pumping out As many kringles as they can; Bendstens is still practicing time honored procedures That produce incomparable results.

In the world of Racine danish, Bendstens has no peers. They stand alone. 5/5

Google
Best place in Racine to get true authentic Kringles. The Kringles here are the best I’ve ever had.

I have a friend who considers himself an Aficionado of the Kringle. he said if you ever go to Racine, you absolutely have to stop at Bendtsen's Bakery and get a Kringle. The drive into town from the interstate took only a few minutes, and the Delight that resulted from this little side trip was worth every minute. The staff was extremely friendly and greeted us immediately upon walking in. Our eyes were met with unbelievable sights. Delightful sites of Bakery Goods, Breads, and of course kringles. We ordered the apricot, and a cup of coffee, sat down and savored every bite. My wife bakes pies, and it is clear that real lard is used in the recipe. The flakiness and lightness of the pastry bread was undeniably delicious. If you're in the area, I would now pass on my friend's recommendation. You absolutely must take time and stop and come get a Bendtsen's Bakery Kringle.

My nephew was scolded by a some older women. He’s autistic and was on his iPad. He is non verbal so he does stim. However to the rude older lady who told him to shut it up! You are the most vile human being ever. To management who said it couldn’t have been anything serious. I hope when someone in your family is met with the same kind of low standard. You’ll remember to say that. This world need to be kind and especially to OUR special needs children. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED. I’ll never go here again

Yelp
I like that you can buy samples of other Kringle. This is great so I don't have to buy a whole one. Check it out.

Yelp
Best kringle in Racine-- still handmade!!! Flavorful choices and lots of delicious breads and desserts, as well!

Yelp
Apparently, kringles are famous in Racine because the Danish brought these in 1800s. A friend recommended this place and we had a chat with Beven, one of the store employees. Most of the kringles are frosted except the apples one where they got caramel or sugar topping. Think they start at $11 each and about one pound each. We sampled the pecans one and it was a bit too sweet. Ended up getting the croissants, elephant ears and some apricot pockets. They also sell donuts, bagel, breads, etc. $5 min purchase to use credit card.

Kristin S.

Yelp
Great customer service. Their kringle is the best I've ever had. They also have many other danish treats.

Yelp
Today on a summer day in July of 2025 I decided to take my 3 children to get morning donuts and tea they got their donuts were sitting down on their iPads eating their donuts and drinking the lukewarm water k also paid for due to their coolers being down as my son started stimming while enjoying his donut and iPad game I guess they had enough in the back to where the owner came out from and ask d my son in a raged aggressive tone settle down and calm down I begin to explain to her that due to his disability he can not just "calm down" because you say and that wasn't the proper way to to ask nor address a 6 year old child I begin to scold her as she was trying to explain to me that she gets overwhelmed sometimes which has nothing to do with me nor my children being children her daughter then came out in a aggressive panic state saying just give her a refund because I then wanted to return the donuts we were going to take home while yelling to her mom to stop arguing with me as we were headed out another coworker tried to reassure me by saying I have mixed kids so it's not about race as if she could relate to anything in that moment this place is not family friendly and very rude to US KING AND QUEENS I wouldn't recommend you get even a chockalye drop from this 4 generations of racism

Yelp
I made a trip back to the old home town, and this is one place I will not be driving by, without a stop. Bendtsen's has the best kringle in Racine. I'm not even going to entertain an opposition. In fact, it is the best bakery (IMO) in Southeastern Wisconsin. The wife and I arrived a little late on last Saturday, but late is better than never. The wife is a butterscotch fan. I know, she's 92 year old woman trapped in a 43 year olds body, but you can't deny it is a tasty flavor. We purchased one of those kringle varieties, a couple of croissant donuts, an elephant ear, and we should of gotten that last German Rye, but we just bought two loaves of Italian bread from Cardinalis. Next time for sure. All the items we purchased (and consumed) were outstanding. I mean that whole heartedly. OUTSTANDING. The one thing I didn't score, and was sad about, was a seven sisters. That is my childhood favorite. I will be back just to get me one of those. I will call ahead and make sure it is set aside. Tasting the kringle brought back happy childhood memories. In fact, it was better than when I was a kid!! I'm glad to see you are still in business, and I will be calling an order soon. Keep up the great quality, guys!!

Yelp
Wonderful small business if you are visiting Racine it is a MUST go great quality food, polite friendly service, and great ambiance lights.

Yelp
Everything was great! Kringles are the best in town with their light flaky authentic pastry.

Yelp
My first ever kringle spot, and holy smoke do I know how to pick em. This thing was sent from heaven straight to my taste buds. The people here we so warm and welcoming and led me to the perfect decision!
google avatar

Yelp
Best Kringle in the world. Not open Sunday. Plan wisely. Get the churro, cinnamon roll, blueberry cheese, apple sugar and ohhhh the seven sister cake for heavens sake!
google avatar

Anrana S.

Yelp
OMG. The Kringle is the best. Like you died and went to heaven. And heaven is the inside loop of a Kringle. I had tried Kringle at a local tourist trap - and the tourist Kringle tasted like a honey bun you get out of a vending machine. But this is the real deal. One of the only places still making Kringle by hand. And it is worth it. $11 for a basic Kringle as of July 2023.

Yelp
Bendtsen's is a homey fourth generation mom-and-pop operation and the David in the David and Goliath kringle competition in Racine (with bigger and better known O&H Danish Bakery).  While in the area, we were happy to swing by and try one of their kringles.  We were directed towards Bendtsen's a little while back by a couple of famous and kringle loving Yelpers with Wisconsin roots.  They're so famous I don't even need to mention names. We arrived at about 4pm on a Tuesday and there were a few kringles left.  Grace was our lovely and friendly local girl attendant and shared with us that they make the only hand made (versus machine made) kringles in Racine.  We wanted almond (our favorite flavor), but they were out of those so we settled for a pecan.  The wife also picked up a loaf of white bread ($3.75), another basic favorite bakery item of ours.  Most of the kringles go for $10, but a few do go for $12.  Both items were quite nice.  As we both don't have particularly strong sweet tooth(s), we did however find the pecan slightly over-sweet for us, duhh!  It had plenty of pecan filling unlike another reviewer whom I noticed complained about not enough filling, ha. Anyway, t'was nice to try and for now, I'll have to honestly give my kringle nod to O&H, but it's all a matter of personal taste and they both make great kringles.  To make a fairer comparison, we'll try to make it back one day, and at an earlier time, to try their almond kringle.

Yelp
I just ate my first roasted pecan Kringle. Life changing. They should sell them in Illinois cannabis shops ... they'd make a killing!

Richard B.

Yelp
O and H is the only bakery for me ,im sure bendtsens has good products but I love O-H

Yelp
ordered a pecan Kringle for my brother in law bill in Florida as he's undergoing treatment and this is his favorite. it came today and he is beyond happy. so grateful for bendtsens care in shipping it and putting the smile on his face. THANK YOU
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
The roasted pecan is head and shoulders above any Kringle made in Racine! Their cookies are flavorful and chewy, just like grandma used to make! No manufactured hockey pucks here! The donuts and danish are wonderful as well. To ensure the roasted pecan is in stock I recommend calling to reserve or order ahead, it is worth the trip to West Racine!

Yelp
By far the best Kringle I have ever tasted is sold in this tiny bakery. What is a Kringle? According to google, it's described as a Scandinavian pastry brought to Racine,Wisconsin by the Danish in the late 1800s. I also would just describe it as a coffee cake on steroids. It's thinner than coffee cake but on steroids because it's bursting with sweet delicious flavors. They are also flaky, sweet (not disgustingly sweet), and just so delicious. You just have to try it! I don't believe you will find many Kringles in bakeries in Chicagoland area and although places like Trader Joe's now carried kringle, they definitely do not taste as good as the Kringle found at this bakery I have tried kringles from the bakery down the street and other stores in the Wisconsin area and none compare to the kringles at this bakery. I will make the hour plus drive just to pick some up. It's totally worth it! They have a huge list of fillings they make on their website and you can even order them to ship. My favorite is their pecan! I have tried other items at this store I wasn't a fan of but why get anything else when you can get this most delicious pastry ever? Go to Racine, just for a kringle! Totally worth it!

Yelp
Ordered two Kringles online. Received Heat Damaged and Handling Damaged. I don't blame them for the damage caused by UPS. But I do blame them for not answering my emails and my messaging through their web site. Wasted nearly $50. A bakery that doesn't stand behind their baked goods is a bakery I can live without.

Yelp
Awesome Kringle! We tried the raspberry cheesecake Kringle and a cinnamon roll. They were both wonderful. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Rhonda F.

Yelp
Although it might be difficult to pronounce, Bendtsen's Bakery is one of my favorites. Cute and cozy, the store offers a welcoming vibe. The staff is always smiling and friendly. The young girl behind the counter offered suggestions and told us her favorites. She also said they are the last bakery that hand makes their authentic kringle. The shelves are always clean and nicely organized. It always smells sooo good when you walk in. I want to buy one of everything! We bought cronuts with cream cheese topping, a raspberry cheese kringle and an almond macaroon kringle. Yummy! There is ample street parking but be careful, the parking lane is very tight. Someone driving by hit my sister's driver's side mirror while we were inside.

Yelp
Yes we all know OH has more outlets so it gets voted best Kringle in Racine. But this place is a stand alone outlet and easily has the best Kingle in Racine. . So good . Other fine bake goods as well. So good.

Desiree B.

Yelp
Bests Kringles in WI! O&H have nothing on Bendtsen's hands down. Awesome customer service too. I recommend the 7 sisters, key lime cheesecake Kringle, strawberry rhubarb Kringle, cheesecake Kringle, cinnamon roll Kringle, Carmel apple Kringle, etc.
google avatar

Camille S.

Yelp
There are a lot of bakeries that sell Kringle in Racine and I feel Bendtsens is the best. The crust is always buttery and crisp. There is a lot of flavors to choose from and their prices are more reasonable then the other bakeries. Try it you will love it.
google avatar

Gloria C.

Yelp
Went just last week for Kringle ( it's the best!!) had to stop myself at four pastries, maybe it was 5 ha ha! I did have an apple elephant ear, couldn't resist! I want 2 of everything, Please.... Very pleasant experience all around, ample free parking in back too. Go, you will not regret it!!

Noah W.

Yelp
The best Kringle in town! Flaky and delicious. For true quality of Kringle go to Bendstens. never O and H. That's mass produced Walmart quality Kringles.
google avatar

Bob L.

Yelp
I love the Kringle's here!!! One of my first stops whenever I'm in Racine. My favorite is the pecan Kringle. It's large, but I always end up eating the whole thing in about 24 hours.
google avatar

Erin G.

Yelp
We prefer their Kringle over the O&H kringle. Bendtsen's pastry is nicer, flakier, and they, thankfully, go easier on the icing.
google avatar

Jerome N.

Yelp
Got the pecan Kringle. It's really sweet but so good. A slice is all you need. It's flaky like a croissant. It's also soft and somewhat doughy. The pecan is yummy. The Apple elephant ears is okay. It's not as sweet as the Kringle. It's flakey. The Apple filling is good. It's not overwhelming. I feel like it was over cooked though. The cronut is okay. It's so sweet with the cream cheese frosting. It's chewy and soft. The service was great! They're so nice. They answer all your questions. I recommend this place :-)

Mark B.

Yelp
Best Kringle in Racine. Handmade and there is a difference. Took these to customers all the time. They were preferred over the big company when we blind tested for fun...

Yelp
My friend's daughter's Bat Mitzvah celebrations are over and it's time to head home. For me, that means driving back up to Milwaukee on Black Friday to catch a 3 PM flight back to San Francisco (via MSP). I decided to get on the road at 6 AM so that I could catch do a little sightseeing in Milwaukee and try out a few places written up in the latest version of "Road Food" by Jane and Michael Stern. The first stop was Bendtsen's Bakery in Racine for a Kringle, "the world's finest danish pastry". A Kringle looks like a ring about a foot and a half across and as big as a Christmas wreath. It has a featherlight buttery crust, almost like a croissant and is available with a ribbon of pecan or almond macaroon paste or a filling of cherry and cheese (along with other fruit choices). I ordered a cherry one which was warm and fresh out of the oven that early in the morning. And it's a lot of food for $8! In fact, I brough the leftovers home and there's probably enough left for a total of 4 individual breakfasts! My Kringle has been sweet and tasty and definitely worth the culinary experience. Please note that the Kringle at Larsen's Bakery just down the street might be just as good, but that may have to wait for the next trip.

Yelp
When I'd go home to God's Country in Wisconsin, I'd usually get Lehman's kringle they have a store close to my mom's house. BUT, someone had given us a Bendtsen's kringle a few wks back and we noticed a difference in the crust. Don't get me wrong...Lehman's is "the jam" too. But there's something unique about the kringle at Bendtsens...their uber fantastic crust. It was a few bucks more, but well worth it IMO. I'll still frequent all the bakeries in Racine for their kringle...to spread the love, but will most definitely be coming back to Bendtsen's.
google avatar

Stu K.

Yelp
While there is some passionate debate locally, with my family there is no question...Bendtsen's, everytime. By far the flakiest, not overly sweet, always fresh. We got up early, got the same Kringle from a couple recommended places in Racine. Head-to-head battle, all were good, but only one clear winner!
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
Bendtsen's makes the best Kringle there is, hands down! There bead and pasties are delicious!

Sandra R.

Yelp
When I was working & had to go to Racine, I would stop for a Kringle to take back home. I've tried different stores there but liked Bendtsen's the best. It's located right on the main drag (on Washington Ave) & always had street parking available near the store's entrance. Since I retired, I have ordered my Kringle from here online. I'm not an icing fan. So particularly like that the Kringle I receive comes with a very light sugar topping instead of the icing topping. Kringle's with the icing topping can be purchased in the store. I purchased a Kringle from here just recently that I plan to share when we can get together with our neighbors. One of my neighbors' is allergic to cinnamon. I called the store & received a prompt answer that cinnamon was in the Kringle I purchased & in all the Kringle's except the almond one. I'll just keep this Kringle for my family. I find they freeze well.

Kirsten B.

Yelp
Best Pecan Kringle in Racine. Other flavors are good too, but Bendtsen's pecan varieties should not be missed.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
The best pecan Kringle in town, by far! Flaky crust and rich, gooey filling. It's worth the trip to West Racine.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
This is hands down the best kept secret in bakeries. The danish layer cake is the best around. I know because at our house we have tested them all and keep coming back to this one. The Kringle are hand made, no machines here like a lot of the others in town & it makes a huge difference in flavor. The almond horns melt in your mouth & have a fantastic flavor. If you have not tried this bakery you must.
google avatar

Casey R.

Yelp
The best bakery by far, and the Kringle is the best I've had, and I live in West Racine. I think it's in the butter, but the flavor is so pure without that skim layer left on the roof of your mouth from commercial bakery.

Walter L.

Yelp
Always helpful. They have the best Kringle in Racine. I can't wait for the north side to open up. Hidden Gem!!
google avatar

Jaxson B.

Yelp
We stopped by here quick for breakfast based on reviews and other recommendations we've had. Overall it was really good, just don't overdo it bc the pastries are pretty sweet. The cronut was the sweetest of what we got, but melted in your mouth. The apple elephant ear was delicious, as was the pecan Kringle. I REALLY wish they had slices of other Kringle flavors to try, instead of having to buy the entire Kringle.

Douglas M.

Yelp
Best Kringle in Racine/United States and maybe Denmark, too! I send it to my friends all over the country.

Lucy M.

Yelp
Christmas orders must be placed well in advance due to high demand. I ordered mine in October. I received a call on December 19th stating that the head baker was rushed to the hospital for a day and unfortunately I won't be getting my Kringle until January 7th and I had the option to cancel the order. I have to imagine there are more than one person making Kringle for orders placed in October. I was told there would be no discount or compensation . Poor customer service. Try a different Kringle spot. Very disappointed in this small family run business. UPDATE: it is now December 26th and I still haven't received a call from the manager about a refund. To be clear, I never received the Kringle I paid for in October NOR did I get my money back despite the calls I made. One worker said, "I'm 16yrs old and a manager is the only one that can help you."
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
Bendtsen's Bakery is a must if you are in the Racine area. They are the only bakery in town that still makes everything by hand--and it shows! The kringle is fabulous, and they also have an awesome assortment of pastries, cakes, and breads. Yum!
google avatar

Mike O.

Yelp
Whenever I go to Racine, it's an absolute necessity to stop at Bendsen's for one or more Kringles. Heck, sometimes this stop is my primary reason for making the drive to Racine in the first place. These amazing pastry creations seem to be little-known outside of this region of the country. It's a shame, because they are that good. They are multi-layered pastries shaped like ovals which you bring back to Chicago to share with your coworkers in exchange for wide eyes and grateful praise. Don't come to Racine without stopping here. Seriously.
google avatar

William L.

Yelp
Kringle is the Wisconsin State pastry And this bakery has the best quality - authenticity - best product in all of Wisconsin ! Get the pecan if you only get 1 - if you get 2 add the apple w/ sugar instead of frosting - if you get 3 add the cherry or raspberry !
google avatar

Lard Belly E.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and am always happy with the selections and quality of kringle. I get the turtle, the pecan, the raspberry (with and without cheese), and usually buy a couple of travel boxes to transport the delicious denmark delicasies home safely. General kringle is $9 and goes up from there depending on the extras like cheese. I only buy the kringle, but on the other side of the shop are donuts and other sweet delectables for sale at a great price. Maybe next year I'll splurge on a cream puff.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
I have never been here in person but my office had one of these delivered as a thank you. We had the turtle kringle and it was amazing. I do have a sweet tooth problem and this was legit. Perfect flaky and delightful flavors. I couldn't believe they sent something in the mail from so many states away, and now I see why!!! So worth it.
google avatar

Em A.

Yelp
The best Kringle in town. We are from California and went here to buy 10 Kringle for our family and friends. they also have donuts and other pastries. You could also get it shipped to you. My favorite flavor Kringle is almond and blueberry cheese !

Jeffrey M.

Yelp
My name is Jeffrey Mehoves from Nevada and I have been buy Kringles from this company for years because they make them the way I want them! This year there was a slight problem with my order so I called them and talked to Cindy. She resolved the problem no questions asked and and shipped me out the Kringles the following Monday. This is the way I remember business doing the right thing. Thanks Bendtsen's GREAT JOB. I will be calling you again next year for another order!!! Jeffrey A. Mehoves
