Where to Dine Gluten-Free in Boston

"Benevento’s has an old-school vibe, with its tin ceiling, marble bar, and classically North End menu. Despite that, much of the Italian fare, including pasta dishes and pizzas, is available gluten-free. There’s a patio outside, too." - Celina Colby, Eater Staff

An excellent neighborhood gem! This quaint restaurant is off the main thoroughfare and was still busy with many customers...but not too many that we couldn't find a table. Wonderful meatballs and tomato sauce and homemade chicken tortellini soup. Freshly grated cheese brings the flavors together. Small bar area and the bartenders are wonderfully customer focused.

Great food/pizza and pasta 😋 so yum! Shrimp Caesar salad for two was perfectly dressed and a great appetizer. Small place, reservations are recommended. Quaint place with a nice atmosphere. Lovely and attentive servers. They do not offer dessert but plenty of pastries on the block including Mike's pastries down the street.

Google
The place is a little off the beaten path, but worth the diversion. It's definitely intimate with a delightful offering of authentic Italian pastas and pizzas made from the freshest ingredients! Don't miss the seafood specialties. My wife made her own pizza with anchiovies (which wasn't on the menu) and I had the creamiest tomatoey lasagna!

The family needed an amazing little Italy experience with gluten free options and Beneventos delivered. The gluten free gnocchi with vodka sauce Italian sausage was incredible. My bride had gluten free chicken marsala. The kids had fettuccine Bolognese and pesto chicken with rigatoni. Let's just say everyone was full and happy. Best experience in Boston so far. Amanda was awesome at navigating the menu. Highly recommend. 👌

I went to Al Dente next door to here and asked if I could sit at the bar and the gentleman at the front (owner?) was very pleasant in directing me to “his bar” in Benevetos. So they’re related. The menus are similar except Benevotos has a great open kitchen with a wood fired pizza oven. I was a bit pasta-d out so I was hoping for the Sea Bass Al Dente but it isn’t on this menu. So I went for pizza, and they had a gluten free crust (+$5, a little steep) which was very good. The bar tender, who did a great job, said it would be thin, crunchy and good, and she was right. Overall it was a good pizza with plenty of fresh ingredients. Perhaps undercooked on top, which can happen with a Gf crust, but solid. I’ll try the sea bass next door next time.

Our family of 5 went and had a great meal. We started with the lobster ravioli appetizer and really enjoyed that! Then we had the carbonara (one with gluten free gnocchi), clams linguine, chicken parm, and chicken Alfredo. They did a great job with the gluten free meal- absolutely would get again. I could have shared- as it was too much! Everyone loved their dishes. We would certainly come back. Favorite meal of our trip. Service was very good. Our server checked on us regularly and food was brought out steaming hot! The place is small and narrow, but quaint, like most in that section of town. We had a nice cozy seat across from the brick pizza oven.

Google
The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was good—not too loud. Our group tried pastas and pizzas, and all were really good! Definitely try their pumpkin ravioli and homemade pastas They were able to accommodate dietary restrictions and a large group. (Just note they aren't able to split checks)

Google
This was amazing. I wish I could've eaten fifteen more times there to try everything. The pasta fagioli was delicious. My daughter ordered "chicken fingers" and they were the most delicious chicken cutlets. Service was kind of rushed, and I wish we were seated in the back where it was less crowded, but over all this is a must try.

Yelp
Recently traveled to Boston to see family, and we went to Benevento's a small restaurant off of Salem street. Very cosy inside. We were greeted right away and they were very accommodating to the fact 4 of us were there and 4 would show up later. They gave us bread and butter to start. The baguette was not warm and we were given cold butter packed to spread. I would highly recommend warming the bread and flavoring the butter, or a simple olive oil that has been infused would have taken this a long way. The portions were quite big and the hubby and I shared the pasta. The pasta was cooked perfectly aldente with a nice chew. The vodka sauce was good, but it could've used a bit of red pepper flakes to give it a bit of heat. If I'm back in Boston I would suggest this place, but there maybe others that are better.

Yelp
Went here over the weekend with friends. Wish I'd remembered it was St. Patrick's day (and how popular this area is for that holiday)... The restaurant is fairly narrow. We had a party of about a dozen, and things were a little cozy/snug. Our waitress and the entire staff was fabulous. Every dish was fresh and great portion sizes (several of us took left-overs home). Prices were a bit expensive, but very reasonable for the size. They did a great job topping off beverages and complimentary bread. With many Italian restaurants in the north end to choose from, I would definitely recommend this one.

Yelp
Originally I wanted to go to Al Dente, but the wait was a hour and a half and the host mentioned that next-door they had the same exact menu. So I decided to try Benevento's. I ended up getting the same exact thing that I got from Al Dente a year ago which was the handmade Fussili Carbonara, but this time I didn't add sausage and I got a meatball on the side. The pasta was amazing! Loved the soft texture of the fussili. The carbonara sauce was really good as well - nice and creamy. The pancetta was somewhat chewy, but overall I really enjoyed the dish! The meatball dish was also amazing! The meatball itself wasn't overly seasoned but the sauce and the cheese really complemented the meatball well. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this tasted - it was a very simple dish that had amazing flavor! Washed it down with the Chianti and that made my night! So if you can't make it into Al Dente, go next-door to Benevento's!

Yelp
I live in an area that has a heavy Italian influence - so I was worried that all these north end places were going to be a tourist trap for hapless midwesterners. Thankfully I was wrong. Beneventos was not my first choice. My first choice had a 45 minute wait. Benevento told us there was a 10-15 minute wait - was closer to 20-25 minutes. We survived. Food - penne vodka with chicken - when it's good it's great - when it's bad it's a bland mess. This was good, the aromatics were bumping, the chicken was tender, I found extra break extra chicken cutlet extra anything to sop up this sauce - it was very good. Even my date liked it. Date went for the fig salad and an eggplant rolatini - second excellent sauce of the meal. Just a regular old red sauce that was lip smacking good. Pizza for the kids. Thin crust, crispy, they are the whole thing. Also got them some plain pasta which they did eat. Kitchen is open so that adds to the ambiance. Waitress could have been a little bit faster but we survived.

Yelp
Solid! Small but worth it. Tasty food that is off the beaten path. Not going to blow you away at all but you will fill it was worth the stop. Homemade meatballs are a must.

Yelp
The wait is long, but it is so worth it! I made a reservation for party of 7 here, and we still need to wait an hour for our table. However, the staffs are extremely nice and constantly asking us if we need anything once we are seated. I would highly recommend the chicken Parmesan here! The restaurant ambiance is upbeat, and always feels busy. This spot would be nice for big group of party to gather and hang out over drinks and good food

Barry H.

Yelp
The service was great and the food was delicious. Recommend trying the Short ribs or eggplant rollatini.
google avatar

Katrina S.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday evening and it was popping. We had reservations but still had to wait a bit for a table. This is a more casual Italian restaurant. They have a wide variety of options on the menu - many vegetarian choices. I got the build your own pasta with the fusilli and vodka sauce, it was a huge portion and the sauce was really good. We also got bruschetta for the table which was okay, needed a bit of salt in my opinion. They have a robust martini menu which is fun, I got the lemon drop which was nice. And then they had a pretty decent list of wine, with many reasonable priced options. Would definitely recommend for a more low key Italian dinner.

Yelp
Dined here as part of a group so take that into account. Ordered a bunch of items family style. All were decent and servers were very good. It's not a bad place for Italian but nothing blew me away.

Jamie S.

Yelp
We had a delicious meal and the staff was amazing! We enjoyed the cozy environment. Thank you!

Yelp
Wasn't our first choice for Italian, but the other spots I wanted to visit were booked. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation time and were seated promptly. It is a small place and the tables are on top of each other. Our server, Amanda, was nice and attentive. We shared a Caesar salad to start, which was really good. My wife had the linguine w/pesto. I had the cheese lasagna with a meatball. Both entrees were good but I just wasn't blown away. My wife did have quite a bit leftover so the serving was a decent size. They also gave us quite a bit of bread to take with us. Given where I was at I was expecting more, especially for what we were charged. When I come back to Boston, I'll be sure to try a different place and not snooze on making a reservation.

Yelp
I visited per a recommendation on a GF blog. I had the garden salad and Gluten Free Pizza (four cheese). It was better than the typical cauliflower crust, but I won't be day dreaming about it. Overall, the meal was standard Italian American food. The service was a bit slow, however, I visited after an Italian festival had been going on all weekend. I'd recommend it if you're in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.
google avatar

Donna L.

Yelp
I came here for dinner with a friend and had a really great experience. You definitely need reservations as this place gets packed. We got the fried calamari, frutti di mare with red sauce, and a chicken pasta. The seafood pasta and calamari were delicious. Chicken pasta was okay. Our server was really nice. The ambiance is also good. I'd come back here to eat for sure.
google avatar

Jeff Q.

Yelp
Great food, fair price. Sit to close to your neighbors. Waitress was friendly and fun.

Yelp
My dad and I both got sick after eating here! He's not gf but he ate gf food with me! Please be super careful if you eat here i think i was glutened and they don't have rules about cross contamination! It was so tasty but not worth getting sick for 2 days! Maybe they will see this and take the contaminated food seriously!
google avatar

Yelp
I watched the Celtics Game 7 finals game here! Really friendly staff, especially Amanda. The lobster raviolis was a perfect dish - pretty filling for an appetizer, delicious sauce, packed with lobster. A fun place for dinner!

Yelp
Terrific food! It was quite crowded this Saturday evening, and we had reservations for a large party - 24 folks. We had to wait for seating, but that was okay! When seated - the wives, hubby's and the lads (our HS crew team boys) were at separate locations, but that was just fine. The waitstaff was excellent and attentive. Drinks and orders taken without haste. The IPA I got was really great...some sorta boom boom thing or something? I ordered the Spinach ravioli and a small house salad. My food...everyone's food...was excellent! My boy had lasagna that he thought was fine! No complaints about anything at any table. Great dining spot...and we spoke with the owner afterwards, laughing about our large party. Great fellow, and a wonderful place to visit and enjoy a meal!

Yelp
Cozy quaint and classic Italian restaurant in the heart of the north end of Boston. Very friendly service and extremely attentive. Food was EXCELLENT! The fresh pasta ravioli and gnocchi were some of the best we have ever tried. Decent prices for Boston. Try the puttanesca. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Randi K.

Yelp
In my best Italian accent- "forgettabout it" and throw the napkin down in defeat. This pasta didn't stand a chance! We got right to the point tonight and ordered 2 classics: spaghetti w/ Bolognese and penne with Vodka sauce. Both were extremely flavorful and the portions are enough for two! The service was friendly and helpful. Inside, it looks like a high end pizza joint and the tables are tight- but that doesn't bother me. When you have great food, you can (and need to) pack 'em in!
google avatar

Britt M.

Yelp
This is a cute little spot in the heart of Italian village. We came here on a Friday night and it was packed. The interior is pretty small so be sure to get a reservation. Overall the food was good! We split the Caesar salad for two, I had the lobster ravioli both of which were excellent. My husband had the chicken cattiorre and said it was just alright.
google avatar

Luke R.

Yelp
Unlike a lot of places that label themselves "pizzerias," this one actually puts in the effort to make a quality pizza. The servers are quick, attentive, all-around great. Make sure you get the spukonie.
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
I've been to Benevento's every time I've visited Boston....and every time, it hits the spot. The pasta is wonderful, the sauces are not too heavy, and their bread is spot on. We made an open table reservation but didn't need one on this cold, rainy day. The ambiance is casual, the service is wonderful and the food is delish.

Kim W.

Yelp
This small little restaurant in the North End was just what we were looking for. Fresh homemade pasta and gluten free options. Our waitress was helpful with making dinner selections and was attentive throughout the meal. Tables were close together which is exactly what we expected from a great North End restaurant.

Eleanor H.

Yelp
The food was super good. I ordered the linguine with vodka sauce and it was amazing, so creamy, so tomato-y, overall so delicious. We also got prosciutto as an appetizer and it was so crispy and garlicky and the tomatoes were so good and fresh. Overall this was a 5 star meal and I loved it.

James J.

Yelp
Food, service are great and loved sitting outside in back. They treat everyone like a special guest!!

Evelyn T.

Yelp
Foo was underwhelming but seevice is great. We had the lobster ravioli and benevento pizza. Good portion of lobster ravioli, tasted okay. Disappointed with the pizza.

Yelp
My wife and I had a wonderful dining experience here. We wanted one of their weekly specials, but we're concerned about the high price of sharing. Once the waitress waived that nonsense, we got down to business. We already knew a single dish would be plenty, and we couldn't save any because we were on vacation. I enjoyed a glass of Chianti ( they had three on the menu). We each had a side salad of mixed greens with a creamy Italian dressing. It was especially delicious. Then came the massive main course of rigatoni in mascarpone cheese with sautéed mushrooms and slow cooked short rib! What an amazing and unique dish. It was outstanding. Service was excellent too, starting with that "waiver." It's a small but intimate place with an open kitchen. The whole experience was excellent.
google avatar

Brad M.

Yelp
I visited Benevento's with some friends on a recent trip to Boston and enjoyed it very much. We started with the fried eggplant and it was delicious...definitely recommended. The bread service was good though nothing really noteworthy. The mixed greens salad was fresh and really enjoyable with their classic Italian dressing. The menu includes several varieties of fresh made pasta so I opted for the rigatoni with bolognese sauce and it was really good; the freshness was evident. For drinks I went with the house-recommended chianti and it was very nice. There are many, many options for Italian food in the North End but Benevento's is a solid option to try.
google avatar

Eliza N.

Yelp
Great meals friend tried linguini and clams. Chicken cacciatore and puttanesca were the stars as well as our waitress Anna Belle!!
google avatar

Jill T.

Yelp
With many Italian restaurants in the area... select a different one. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't the greatest and I didn't leave thinking "damn I need to go there again!" We had bruschetta, I've definitely had better, just a punch of tomatoes on French bread loaf. Not sure what my husband had (sausage and peppers of some sort), chicken Marsala which wasn't very flavorful and my daughter built a pizza. It was burnt and the center wasn't crispy at all! The service was friendly and good! So that was a bonus.
google avatar

Walter F.

Yelp
My wife and I traveled from Nashua New Hampshire to Boston to see Nate Bargatze at the Garden. We went to Benevento afterwards for dinner. We really enjoyed our food but my wife discovered she had left one of her very nice leather gloves behind. The next day, I called the restaurant and they had it. They were kind enough to mail it to me. Excellent food and terrific customer service. Thank you.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Food (gnocchi) & drink (Aperol Spritz) were both great - loved being right in the heart of the North End, and our group of 4 was very happy with the quality of everything we ordered. Would recommend to others - remember to make a reservation, as the restaurant gets busy!
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
Had the lobster ravioli and lasagne. Very good! Good portions. Prompt delivery. Limoncello to finish. Not a large place so a reservation is recommended. Hope you are friendly so that the close tables don't upset you. Only problem, not the fault of the restaurant, 6 women: either Mafia wives or from Dallas were very loud! Decided it was not worth figuring out which.

Mario S.

Yelp
If you're looking for gluten free, this is the place. Pasta dishes are amazing. Not too fancy and not at all shabby. A wonderful place for a drink, date or any occasion. Reservations I believe are required due to not a huge seating area. Well worth it. Will be returning when back in the North End.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
We stumbled across this restaurant. Boy we are lucky we did!! The food is delicious and the service was on point. The atmosphere is chill vibes quiet and calm. It's a small place but packs a big bite!!

Eric P.

Yelp
Food is always delicious, service is sold and the price is reasonable. The homemade pasta is always excellent
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
SO GREAT!! The pasta is phenomenal and the pizza is brick oven, also great. I got the penne carbonara. The restaurant is pretty small with 20 tables or less, but it's a must. Good location but parking is less than ideal in this area. Lots to do and see. 5/5
google avatar

Nathan W.

Yelp
The pasta was good, but the bread, atmosphere, and prices were not great. I wouldn't say the prices match what you get.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
We weren't extremely hungry so the 3 of us ordered the fried calamari, bruschetta, pumpkin ravioli, and a margherita pizza to share. The fried calamari portion was generous and tasted good. The bruschetta (6 pieces in one order) could have used some salt but was otherwise prepared very well. The pumpkin ravioli was delicious in it's brown butter, sage, and honey sauce. These items alone were very filling and satisfying but then came the margherita pizza. It too was very good but we could only muster a single slice and took the rest home for left overs. It was a busy night and the service was decent. I'd come back again to try some of the more hearty entrees.

J L.

Yelp
Food is good but had reservations and got sat downstairs in the basement which felt exactly like sitting in a basement. A party of 18 people came in and had a feeling they got the whole upstairs and other people all had to get sat downstairs in the basement which wasn't cool.
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
The shrimp and scallops Benevento was excellent. The shrimp fra diavolo was good but not that spicy. The shrimp Grand Marnier app was very good but maybe too sweet. Service was great. It's a small restaurant so the seating was a little tight. There a several large screen TVs showing sports, which gives it a bit of sports bar feel. Prices were quite reasonable for the North end.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Food was fabulous! Wait staff was attentive and pleasant. They have lots of gluten free options which was amazing. Great drink menu too! Tight quarters would be the only downfall. If you don't mind that, you will love it!
google avatar

LeAnn L.

Yelp
Let me start by saying, I'm a tourist. Apparently it's fairly common in Boston for tables to be right up on each other. This is not the norm in ATL. I heard every annoying word uttered from the 2 college girls sitting next to us. The also had no self awareness or volume control and were on 10 the entire time! So the ambiance here is LOUD! The service was good. The food was ehhh. Based on the other reviews left here, I had higher expectations. Maybe the chef hasn't gotten his taste back since Covid or something but my pasta had no flavor. My friend said the same thing. We ate less than 50% of our $30+meals and didn't take it to go. All in all - save yourself emotional distress and money. Eat somewhere else.
google avatar

Sami W.

Yelp
A cute little restaurant with good service. I was mainly disappointed in the additional charge for gluten free options. I understand, to a degree, charging extra. However, I ended up paying $30 for the most mediocre gf pasta I've ever had. I will say though, the serving portions were large enough that I could have made 3 small meals out of my portion of pasta.

Sue F.

Yelp
Benevento has such an amazing menu. It is so extensive and everything is great. I always get the eggplant rotini and the shrimp Grand Marnier as appetizers. The chicken Benevento is terrific and my husband always gets the chicken and eggplant Parm. They also have these dishes next-door at their sister restaurant Al Dente. The staff is excellent and very attentive, the doorman Michael tries to get you in as soon as he can. The owner Joe is very friendly. The inside has a trendy great look with neat lamps and a darker looking interior. I highly recommend trying this great Italian restaurant down in the north end just one street down on Salem Street away from the hustle and bustle of Hanover Street.

Yelp
Had some initial concerns when we walked in and it just seemed like a loud bar with cheap tables, but the help reviews did not lead us astray. The meal was great actually and more affordable than many other North End options. We had a meatball side, the gnocchi quattro formaggio, and my wife had the gluten free Bolognese. The meatball was good, a rich meat to it with a bunch of good but maybe a little salty tomato sauce. The quattro formaggio bake was incredible. Tons of gnocchi in the dish, a lighter tomato sauce, or at least it seemed lighter maybe cuz of the parmesan mised throughout it. Almost like a tomato vodka sauce mix, maybe I'm just making that up but it was so good. With tons of cheese on top and throughout. Would highly recommend this. Easily got two meals out of it. The gluten free pasta was penne but you can do basically every dish gluten free which is a big plus. The Bolognese was fine. Nothing amazing but fine. I'd go back I have to say. Despite a but of an awkward start to the meal (waiting despite a reservation, a bar-type entrance seemingly emphasizing drinks not food, cheap tables/chairs), the food itself was great and worth returning for; suppose the rest enables a little more affordable meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Ambiance: 5/5 For what it's worth it is just a casual Mom and Pop Italian restaurant so I wasn't expecting anything extra in regards to ambiance. It is nice and clean inside. Food: 5/5 The bread that was given to us was fresh and delicious, only thing I could say was the butter they gave was rock hard and hard to spread. We ordered the caesar salad and it was good. It had cold and crunchy lettuce but it was nothing that made me stop and think twice though. I ordered the fresh rigatoni with vodka sauce and shrimp although expensive was worth every penny and was DELICIOUS. You also get a lot of food for what you're paying for. My friend ordered the lobster ravioli and she was raving about it! Service: 5/5 Our waitress was nice. Service was good for the type of place it was although she took awhile to take our checks but no big deal! Would I Come Back and Recommend? Yes 100%!
google avatar

Avery J.

Yelp
good atmosphere, good italian food. we got seated pretty quickly, which was nice. prices are pretty reasonable. service was good. would recommend the pasta, not so much the soup - there wasn't much to it in my opinion.

Yelp
My level of disappointment from our visit last night is great. I loved this place. I found it four years ago when I moved back into Boston proper. I told everyone I knew to check it out. My son loved the meatballs/sauce and I loved the gluten free options and their willingness to make my meal also free of alliums (onions/garlic). I never got sick eating here. The servers pre covid were lovely and good at their jobs. They would give me the limoncello shot at the end and him a shot of ginger ale so we could cheers. The service has gone downhill post covid but I didn't mind as it's how things are generally now and the food remained solid, so we kept coming. Sadly, the food and service were both poor last night. The server was cool, not friendly, and then rude when she got my order wrong and I asked for it to be remade. She snapped, it's going to take 10 mins. We'd already waited awhile, my son was eating, so I said, no problem I'd wait. My order, given my food issues, is a bit more complicated, but she didn't write it down. As a server myself, I don't hesitate to write things down as it's way better than getting it wrong. The hassle it causes for the kitchen staff and the resulting displeasure of the patron isn't worth it. I did get my remade meal, but I also got sick and had a miserable night. I'm sad that we need to find a new neighborhood gem for our Italian fix. I do hope we just caught our server on a bad day. But, once I get sick at a place I thought was safe for me, I can't go back. My recommendation is bring your patience pants and go for the regular food, as it's delicious. My son was once again happy with his meal. However, go knowing it's might take awhile and likely won't be served with a smile.

Yelp
Great meal! Solid spot in the north end. Easy to get a reservation and we got seated right away. We split the arugula salad, which was sizable. My wife lover her gnocchi and the bolognese was spot on. Simple, comforting Italian. The tables were a little tight, and the high tops were a little cold being close to the door but such is life. Great food, great service, would definitely come back again next time we visit Boston!
