A Mexican Mainstay in Bethesda — And More Closures in November | Eater DC

"A New York–styled fledgling slice-and-beer spot that opened in February 2024, this Del Ray outpost has permanently closed, “with regret,” per a social media message." - Tierney Plumb

Benny’s is proof that sometimes the simplest things hit the hardest. No frills, no gimmicks—just massive New York–style slices and rotating specials that keep you coming back. The prices feel like a throwback to another era, especially when you realize just how much pizza you’re holding. How massive? The photo says it all: my 6’3”, 240-pound friend looks like a kid struggling with a toy box when he holds one of their pies. A single slice could be lunch; a whole pie is practically a group event. On my visit, Ben (not related to the Benny) was running the show—friendly, helpful, and quick to make sure we got a taste of the month’s garlic mushroom special. He even hooked us up with a mango habanero chicken pizza that hit the sweet-heat balance just right. This is the kind of place that doesn’t need to pretend to be anything it’s not. Great pizza, great people, unbeatable value. If you’re in Virginia and hungry, don’t overthink it: Benny’s. Five stars.

Google
HUGE! I tried the Gyro pizza today and it did not disappoint...loved the tzatziki sauce for dipping. The wonderful young lady made a single slice of it for me, i was surprised as Ive never had a slice of specialty pizza made to order. Have tried the excellent NY Style HUGE pizza before and will definitely be back.

Do not skip this review… Pizza is amazing!!! The best pizza in Virginia/DC. Hands down, I am from New York and tried countless places here and been disappointed every time with the exception of Mia’s in old town. This place tops it, amazing pizza and the sodas are really cold!!!! Slices are big, so if you and your partner are foodies, get 3 and split the third! Highly recommend as a fellow New Yorker!

Google
It was a cool vibe. The pizza was HUGE. There are no appetizers. They only .ake pizza. The staff you can tell is still trying to figure it out on customer service and restaurant upkeep, but that is going to happen with a new spot. The one down fall is they get caught up in cursing during conversation when kids are present. Other than that the place is real chill.

Google
We really enjoyed this place. The pizza was good. Service was very friendly. They had music for the event. I would definitely recommend this place.

Google
I had such a nice dinner here! Their pizza is one of the best I have had in NOVA. Also their beer selection is wonderful. Penelope and Austin were friendly and professional and gave great recommendations! Cannot wait to be back.

Google
Great service along with great pizza!! Always greeted warmly and given quick service. Love the throwback tunes playing and the relaxing atmosphere of this pizza joint. The pizza has always been consistently GIANT and delicious! Love the monthly rotating toppings as well as the garlic mushroom (with hot honey). Definitely give this spot a try if you want an Instagram worthy slice!

Google
TL,DR: Amazing pizza, massive slices, great vibe, great prices, definitely worth going to. This place is absolutely fantastic. I got a slice of cheese pizza, and when I tell you that this thing was massive, you can take that to the bank. Their slices are the size of two paper plates, and while you might think that it’s a gimmick, possibly to make up for an OK pizza, you’d be dead wrong. The pizza itself is amazing. The crust is foldable, it has a bit of crunch to it, but is also soft, and has a great texture. Taste wise, it’s also very solid, and doesn’t take away from the sauce or cheese, while also being a prominent flavor. For the sauce, it’s a pretty mild sauce, not super sweet or acidic, or too tomato-ey. As for the cheese, it melted great, tastes good, and was really solid. Very filling, and for only six bucks, you just can’t beat it. Now, as far as the atmosphere of the restaurant, it has an amazing vibe to it, and the staff running the place are awesome. I had a great conversation with the guy who made my pizza, And the decor of the restaurant as well as everything else just flowed right together. Nothing Felt out of place, or had any inclination of making me feel unwelcome. It feels like a place you can just walk in, and feel like you’ve been friends with everybody for years. This will definitely be one of my go to spots for lunch, And 100% my go to pizza spot When I’m near the area. Definitely worth stopping in and grabbing a bite, you won’t be disappointed.

Yelp
My husband is a Hokie so had to give it a 5 star review. This place is what you expect. Fast service, jumbo pizza by the slice, casual vibe, and very cheap. Great for hosting parties and large gatherings and prefer it over a Dominoes or Pizza Hut.

Yelp
I was in the area and decided to stop in for a slice of pizza. Apparently, this pizza chain has been featured on a show, they've got all the info posted on the walls. The place has plenty of seating and it's in a busy spot in the Del Ray area. I ordered a pepperoni slice, and what they gave me was a monstrosity of a slice. I mean, it was huge! (Read that in your best Trump impression--huuuge). It came out piping hot, fresh from the oven, and served on two paper plates. The slice was actually really good, thin crust, crispy, loaded with cheese, and just the right amount of grease. I'd definitely come back to try a whole pie. The vibe is super casual, kind of like a mix between a sports bar and a pizza joint.

Yelp
When you and a couple friends go in for a couple slices and walk out with a 28 inch pizza because it makes more financial sense, am I right? That's the experience you're looking at at Benny Diforza's, home of a pizza so massive that everyone you pass with it will be instantly entertained by the comedy of you maneuvering it. You might need a bigger car! But is the pizza worth it? Or the slices worth it? Even putting myself in the frame of mind of DC prices, 6 bucks for big NY slice is pushing it. Paying mid 40s with tax for one of these giant pizzas which cost nowhere near that much to make, even more so. As to the taste, it was frankly pretty similar to most any NY style slice I've had in my lifetime. I'd say the crust was done perfectly, which is the hardest part, but the pizza itself i felt needed more sauce as it tasted kind of dry. The cheese used had a nice stretch to it, good flavor, and there was an ample amount of pepperoni topping on the half that had it. Overall, the taste was good, but not great. For me though, for what we paid for it, I wanted it to stand out more. It didn't really do that for me. The most enjoyable part was watching people's reactions as we tried to move this thing around, or when we got it home to a person that wasn't expecting it.

Yelp
Went here for wine and pizza tasting night - it was amazing!! It was a great time with friends, amidst their giant table. Everyone was so welcoming and made it a fun environment for us. We loved our pairing with fantastic wines with delicious pizzas. I'm usually not a plain Jane fan, but their pizza slices - from the thin but pillowy crust, sauce, and nutty cheese felt like a perfect bite. Didn't need any toppings BUT after trying the pepperoni, mushroom, and hot lips it truly elevated the experience. Highly recommend! My favorite was the mushrooms, from edge to edge absolutely chock full of garlicky, seasoned mushrooms. The hot lips were a lot of fun - covered in spicy mini peppers and a splash of pineapple to quench the flames. Unique and delicious. And you can't go wrong with their pepperoni - a delightful classic where each bite has a slice of their gourmet blend pepps. This is for sure our new favorite place! Their slices giant, their portions and hearts, generous. I encourage everyone to support places like this where local owners care about their community and are so welcoming and supportive to all.

Yelp
Benny Diforza's giant pizza slices take me back to my college days. We used to grab big slices in Adams Morgan after a night of drinking. These slices def scratch the big slice itch!! We got a cheese, mushroom/garlic and pepperoni slice. We couldn't even eat one whole slice each. They are the size of 4 normal slices!! Their pizzas are 28in. Whoa!! They even have a contest to see who can eat a whole pie in 28 minutes. Count me out haha. I thought the mushroom/garlic was the stand out. They put a TON of flavorful mushrooms on it. As far as the quality of the pizza ... I think it's more of a novelty than authentic pizza. The crust is a bit too thick and it's over cheesed. It's def not NY style. But, is it tasty and fun? Yep!!

Yelp
Benny Diforza's is home to the big slice and a big heart with staff and owners that are friendly and welcoming. This franchise has spread across the Commonwealth and still manages to feel like a local neighborhood pizza joint. It doesn't compromise on size, taste, or homeiness. They're serving up a simple, straightforward menu of pizza by the slice or a whole pie and drinks and dips. That's it. Looking for a salad or calzone? Nope. You come here knowing you're getting pizza and you're gonna like it. The prices may seem steep at $7-8 per slice and $44-52 for a whole pizza, but I cannot stress this enough: they are huge! 28" pizzas - that's over 2 feet across! Public math says that each slice is 14", and they are not cutting these into little skinny things. Recommendation is to start with one slice and move to two. Unless you know you're hungry then just jump straight to two and see where it takes you. You will be the center of attention at the party if you bring one of the pizzas to go.

Yelp
Benny Diforza is known for their big slices of pizza. My love for pizza runs deep so I had to give this place a try. The pizza slices range from your typical cheese to a Philly cheesesteak. I went with the sausage and cheese slice. I went after work so there was no lunch crowd. I was welcomed as soon as I walked in. My slice did not take long at all to come out. The pizza was hot, not overly saucy but still tasty. While I was there, another customer ordered a whole pie. It was interesting to see the customer get through the door with the giant pizza box! I would return it's not my usual pizza preference but it satisfied my pizza craving.

Yelp
Excellent spot for a quick slice or taking home a gargantuan 48' pie. Make sure to call in advance or go when they aren't busy because wait times tend to go up.
google avatar

William D.

Yelp
Solid NYC style pizza. They are doing all the basics nicely. I like that it's not a grease bomb like Wise Guys. The sauce tastes very nostalgic and overall I'd go back again. The novelty is it's a huge pizza, but it's also pretty good.

Yelp
Pizza is one of the few things I am an expert in. I will go head-to-toe with anyone on planet Earth. I have had more slices than there is sand on a beach. True; OK thousands...lol. Pizza is based on the principles of bread, sauce, cheese, and toppings. Benny Diforza your pizza needs some work. Let me say first; that bigger is not always best. On my visit, I had a slice of sausage. At best it was OK. When I received my slice the sausage was this pale-looking thin piece of meat. No flavor. Crust mush. A crime has been committed. It had no cheese taste. The crime continues. Benny; this was an ugly slice. I felt the ratio of cheese to bread and sauce; was tasteless. The point was so soft it folded down. I had to tear off to eat. I don't eat pizza that way. I mentioned the huge size of the slice before. Question: how do you place this slice in your toaster oven to heat on takeout? Bigger is not good in this case. Overall, I will be back. I want to give them a second chance because the Service was outstanding. Every single person that walked in was GREETED by the staff. I was there for an hour and before the door shut as a customer walked in; I heard "Hello welcome"; "Thank you for coming ". This was awesome. I was impressed by this. They had a decent selection of canned craft beers. About a dozen styles. Something for everyone? Maybe? Lots of seating. Elevator music has to go. Next visit I will ask for a well-done slice...to be continued...

Yelp
Never would've thought how good the slice would be! Usually the quality is subpar with jumbo slices but these guys nailed it. The crust was crispy yet fluffy and the undercarriage was perfect. Surprisingly I was able to fold it like a regular sized slice. Is it the best pizza I've ever had? No. But for $7 you can't beat the quantity and quality of a slice. The Pepperoni itself was nothing special but the rest of the slice was. I could tell the Guy behind the counter knew what he was doing when he took my slice off the tray and put it directly on the stone in the oven to get the slice a crispy undercarriage. Will absolutely come back.

Yelp
I've passed this place on numerous occasions and decided to stop by after their "social media" campaign with Tik Tok. .. The Pizza slices did not disappoint.. the restaurant was very clean and staff were very friendly I will be back

Yelp
Pizza was old and burned on the crust. Employee was sitting at the bar watching videos. Disappointed, local neighbor that will be looking for a new pizza place.
google avatar

Brigette K.

Yelp
Tried a slice from Benny for the first time; walked in and they had some cheese pizzas, and then what you order they can add the toppings before it goes into the oven. A slice is about $7-9 depending on what you get, and one slice is plenty. The slices are huge and delicious. Inside there are some cool old casino games which is a neat decoration. Also it's open late which is a plus. I'll be back!
google avatar

Edwina R.

Yelp
the service was incredible! the owner was extremely hospitable, and Ben (an employee) is the highlight of this franchise store. i can't speak highly enough of this location. the pizza was phenomenal and everything is made fresh to order. the slices are worth their price compared to any other pizza franchise. will be back soon guaranteed
google avatar

Yelp
DEL RAY, ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Look, is this a culinary revelation of amazeballs-ness? No. But it's a good thin-crust slice, it's a yuuuuge slice, it's $6 to $7.50 for a slice as big as a nice small pizza, the place is clean and fast. For what it is, this is a five-star 'that big slice hit the spot' experience.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Some good pizza. Tired the De Niro (Chicken, Ham & Ricotta) and pepperoni/sausage. Huge slices. Good flavors. Nice structure to the pizza with zero flop despite the size of a slice. Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

LaTanya W.

Yelp
This was their cheese pizza slice and man was it good. Hot, not too much bread perfect amount of sauce. During restaurant week it came with another slice, 2 bags of chips, 2 sodas and 2 ice cream sandwiches. All of it was soooo good. Def going back for those ice cream sandwiches too. The artwork was pretty cool on the walls. The service was also pretty fast as well went mid afternoon.

Yelp
Benny Diforza's is famous for their massive pizza slices--each one easily covers two plastic plates. The prices are very reasonable, and just one slice is more than enough to fill you up. In terms of taste, I'd rate the pizza about a 3.4/5. It's not the best you'll ever have, but considering the size, price, and convenient location, it's a solid value. The spot is located in a busy area of Alexandria, so parking can be a challenge, but once you're parked and have your pizza in hand, there's plenty to explore nearby for a fun night out. The service has always been excellent, and the staff is super helpful, especially when it comes to recommending daily specials.

Santana L.

Yelp
These 2 young men are just here to joke around . Never have I ever waited 20 minutes for a slice of cheese .

Yelp
I've been to a few different Benny's locations around VA, and this one is in my opinion the best. The pizza is consistently good and always fresh. I'm a bit of a pizza fiend, so I found myself having lunch there every day one week and enjoying it every time. On top of the consistent quality, the service is outstanding. Everybody is friendly and attentive, with greetings on entry and goodbyes on exit. Huzzah for Benny Diforza, the BEST Benny's.
google avatar

Monk E. R.

Yelp
I'd been to the Benny's in Richmond before so I was excited to see them open in Del Ray. Big foldable slices with a crispy enough crust so it's got a good bite to it. Sauce was fresh and bright and not sickly sweet. About the worst I could say is that it needed to be reheated in the oven a little longer, but next time I'll order it well done. Excellent selection of bottled sodas, including my favorite RC. Highly recommended for a quick meal, and way less crowded than Andy's in Old Town.
google avatar

Eileen C.

Yelp
Hand for reference. Got the 28 inch pizza - this thing is ginormous!!! Wish the slices were cut a little bit more evenly. Not superb pizza but for the price and value and comically large slices, worth it.

Frank M.

Yelp
I had had a slice of The Soprano (Mac & cheese, crispy onion, bacon and garlic) and holy-effing-$#!¥!!! This is one of the best slices of pizza I've ever had! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Shari Y.

Yelp
Walked in was greeted promptly. There's a nice aesthetic with a painted mural on the wall. The pizza was okay, it was a little dry due to the lack of sauce. They add whatever topping your order to an already done cheese pizza slice, I don't like that at all. The crust was the best part of the pizza nice thin and crispy.

Yelp
My family and I just so happened to be in the area today and decided to get something to eat. We ran across Benny's and decided to stop in and boy are we glad we did!! The pizza was great. The attention to detail for pepperoni placement was so funny to me. The staff was very pleasant and I loved their energy. The owner was there and we highly enjoyed talking to him. We will definitely be back again.
google avatar

Rachel A.

Yelp
My favorite pizza around! I loved going to Bennys in Harrisonburg and I'm SO happy they opened a Northern Virginia location. I always go with the classic cheese and a side of ranch. Some of their special pizzas are amazing and a fun change of pace time to time. I hope they expand to Arlington soon!
google avatar

Teresa B.

Yelp
Went to Benny Diforza today and got 2 jumbo slices of pizza. They were great tasting pizzas. The service was inviting and the staff was pleasant. Had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners. She was very nice. Gave us insight into the business and all about the fresh ingredients used. Will definitely be going back and recommending it to everyone I know.
google avatar

Nicholas D.

Yelp
Heather was wonderful and the pizza is just like Benny Vitali's back home :) plan on going here more often!
google avatar

Lena A.

Yelp
We were very excited to try a new pizza spot that was opening up in the neighborhood. Staff was pleasant and you could feel the "new business" excitement. We came here for the pizza and that was disappointing unfortunately. Just so you know, other than the jumbo slices, they only serve one size pizza - 28 inches! Best ordered when you have a large party. We tried the buffalo chicken and the pepperoni slices. The slices were so undercooked, we couldn't even eat it. I would say the crust was the only decent part. The pepperoni (pictured) was greasy and stuck to the bag. We may give them another chance, but first impression left us unimpressed :(

Gabe M.

Yelp
I went here with my girlfriend on Valentine's Day. My friend who works here suggesTed I stop by one day. Every single bit of the experience was amazing. Staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant was clean and had an amazing ambiance. The food was delicious and priced well. I got a slice of their Ziggy Zag, best pizza I've had in years. I will be coming back here and I hope more people will too. It feels good to have a new favorite restaurant.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Not some regular jumbo slice after a night of clubbing in DC. These are pretty good with nice topping, cheese to sauce ratio. Once the store gets the kinks out with the workers, it'll be even better.

Tim M.

Yelp
Good food and service very nice. Animal friendly. Ambiance is good and lively. They offered to rub my feet.
google avatar

David A.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I'm from NY, and since I moved here, I cannot find good NY style pizza in VA. There's an abundance of wood fired, and then there's all the other styles that are far far far from NY style pizza, some of which leave you feeling like a hippo after eating them. With that said, Benny's is really good pizza, quality ingredients, and as close to NY style as we can get here in VA. If only Benny realized how much more money he could be making. This place could turn into a non stop depot for pizza, making triple the amount of money they make now. All they have to do is offer and churn out regular sized pies for $20-$25. No one needs an oversized gimmick pizza that costs $40 or a $6 slice that gets dried out from sitting around too long. You have a decent pizza formula, and you can keep the $40 pie or $6 slice for those that want it, but I can't help but tell you that you're missing out on a real opportunity here! Listen to your patrons and realize there's financial potential in adding a normal sized pizza to the menu for normal size pizza eaters. Make this tweak to your menu, make sure you have enough supplies to support the whirlwind of orders you will receive, sit back, and enjoy the new riches.

Omar S.

Yelp
Pizza is great. Come hungry. 28" Pies and it's 8 slices per pie. I stopped off for a slice. The service was great. The slice was even better. Good beer. 5 stars.

H W.

Yelp
If you know Bennys from Blacksburg you won't be disappointed with the Bennys in Del Ray. Some of the best pizza around.
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
The pizza was okay but it took 18 minutes to get a slice to go, which is way too long for a place that specializes in pizza by the slice. I'm not sure I would try it again.

William B.

Yelp
A great addition to the neighborhood, one slice is a meal in itself! Staff is very friendly and the owner greeted us. Limited toppings but a simple menu is nice and easy. And taxes are included in their prices, which may seem minor, but is also refreshing. I had the special Wild Bill slice with buffalo chicken and it was great, lots of chicken on that slice.

Margaret S.

Yelp
This place is everything! I stumbled in here exhausted after work late one evening, and my experience brought me back to life. The people working here were super friendly and kind (shoutout to Anthony and Odalys!) and the pizza was so good! I loved the garlic mushroom pizza so much; the slice was HUGE but I wish I could eat an infinite amount! I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a quick and delicious meal!

Beekeeni N.

Yelp
Gigantic slices! Thin and fresh, prices are fair given how large the slice is. Fast service. It's not a "change your life" slice, it's a fun slice. Love the many new pizza options recently added to Del Rey.

Kenneth L.

Yelp
Pizza was delicious and Big! Cheese pizza is my all time favorite. Benny's was fast, comfortable around a big, circular table for 6 of us. Joe's peach tea was a welcome addition to the pizza. First time customer with multiple times family members. Love Del Ray neighborhood. We'll be back!

Rich A.

Yelp
We tried Benny's so you don't have to. If you're sober, you'll be really angry at the wasted money. Rocky Balboa was missing the onion. Garlic and mushroom was canned mushrooms and garlic powder. Gross. Sauce was tasteless. If you order a slice with toppings, it looks like they just throw them on top of a pre-made cheese pizza? Should have just stuck with cheese then. Barely warmed up. Such a disappointment. Oh yeah, the employees were really nice.

Lynsay D.

Yelp
Simple and delicious, I think I like the reheated slice pizza better than a whole pie. Also the garlic mushroom is so good!

Sharon D.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance and great service! The pizza was pretty good, but not quite as flavorful as we would have liked. But the overall vibe is fun.

Dawn L.

Yelp
My mom and I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere, fun decor, and delish pizza. We loved the thin crispy crust! The pizza was made to order and the staff were super friendly. They even have some fun favorites for soda and beer.
