Crowds Pack Colleyville Restaurants After Mayor Reopens Patios | Eater Dallas

"I observed that Benny’s Cafe had lines and full patios over the weekend, and photos suggested many patrons there were not maintaining social distancing or wearing face coverings." - Amy McCarthy

Just up the street from my car dealer and an oil change, we did a u-turn to go back for breakfast. Good thing, the food was great, staff was attentive. Definitely going to return next time we're driving by!

When I walked into Benny's Cafe I was greeted by a server with a warm smile and the scent of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. The menu has many options including salads, wraps, breakfast skillets, omelettes and even a fish fry on Fridays! The booth and entire Cafe looked clean and the atmosphere was pleasant. I had a skillet and it was served over American fries (which are hard to find in diners I've been to) the eggs were fluffy and it tasted delicious. We also got a fresh egg dish served with 3 eggs, bacon, ham and sausage. The over easy eggs were cooked perfectly and the ham was a generous thick piece. The pancakes were fluffy and golden served with warm syrup. Everything tasted great. I would definitely recommend you come try out Benny's Cafe for breakfast, lunch or dinner! I know I am definitely coming back to try more items myself!

We stopped by on a Sunday morning in early January for breakfast. The building has a large number of tables organized in a large, dividable room and we had no issues getting seated. The vibe was less of a quaint diner and more of a place that hosts groups and parties. We were immediately greeted by a member of the wait staff to take beverage orders. After receiving water, juice, and coffee our meal orders were taken and delivered quickly. The food was generous and done mostly as ordered but was unspectacular, with the wheat toast reminding me of something I get from a loaf of bread at home. My hash browns were light but could have been crispier while my bride's were cold and somewhat greasy. The child portion pancakes, however, were huge. I was disappointed that our waitress never returned to ask for coffee refills and didn't ask about how our meals were until we were already finished. Overall an ok place for a quick breakfast but we won't likely return.

Google
Very appreciative that they’re open on Christmas. Very cool to have a breakfast spot on that day. Food quality and quantity is agreeable. Diner standard, I’d say. Coffee cup never got cold or empty. Service was attentive and friendly. Only niggle was the new implementation of a credit card surcharge of 3%. I don’t like this trend among restaurants and would prefer they bake all their expenses into the menu prices.

I stopped in for breakfast and ordered a German omelette with hash browns, but the meal was extremely bland. Nothing was salted — no seasoning at all — and the omelette was filled with American cheese and sliced hot dog instead of actual sausage. When the waitress asked how everything tasted, I simply asked whether they salted their food, and she admitted they didn’t before walking away. I think she knows exactly how the food tastes, and I doubt anybody in the kitchen cares. So, why ask? Why charge $20 for food that McDonalds can make better? One of the waitresses also forgot I ordered ahead of time, so even though I called and made my order, it didn’t matter. I still had to wait.

Google
This place definitely has its regular costumers and I can see why. Staff is friendly, service is quick and food is good. Came here for a mom and daughter breakfast during the week. We love our bacon extra crispy!

Google
Clean and comfortable. No frills. Exactly what a classic diner should feel like. Great food. Kind service. Classic menu choices that include the sides and drinks to make a lovely dining experience.

Google
Benny’s Cafe was good! I was waiting on an oil change and needed to walk somewhere close to grab food. I saw this place had great reviews, and went with them! The server was extremely nice and the food came out extremely fast, not just to me but to other tables as well. The food was good too, I ordered the 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, and 2 pieces of bacon. I would come back again.

Yelp
This place has the best soup. I've only ever ordered to go here. First time was years ago on Thanksgiving when my niece needed something to eat prior to Thanksgiving dinner. They were open and saved the day. Now they have become my go to for soup when anyone is feeling under the weather. Their chicken dumpling is delicious. A bowl is filling and only $5. Makes for a great lunch. The staff is friendly and efficient. This is also my mom's go to place for breakfast with her friends. Definitely check them out!

Yelp
Started our girl day with delicious breakfast at Benny's Cafe! Our waitress was kind, and thorough. Food was scrumptious! It hit the spot! Reasonable pricing! We will be back!

Georgette R.

Yelp
Our server's were friendly, service was great. Their Chicken soup reminded me of Greek soup! Our meal was good! Bravo Benny's Cafe! Will send friend for pick up now. More to come with that experience.

Yelp
Let's be honest here, ya walk right in and I thought I was at a nursing or group home luncheon because I hadn't seen more concentration of elderly individuals so if thats your vibe and you like that distinguished bathroom soap smell, this is the place for you! 16$ for salmon platter, house salad and dessert wasn't a bad deal and didn't give me a stomach ache but nothing special and missing some flavor. The onion rings were horrific and should be taken off the menu! I wouldn't be coming back but I'm glad I didn't break the bank on this one.

Yelp
Been going for years. However tonight they lost 4 customers in one shot. One order of chicken with the mushroom gravy was not cooked completely. Instead of redoing order the manager did nothing to correct it. Plus charged us for it. Taken back by sweet waitress who I felt was uncomfortable coming back to our table. We are also with a regular group of 15 that returns often. We are currently searching a new restaurant for our gathering. Treating regular customers rudely is not the way to stay in business. Hope one meal was worth the loss.

Alexandria L.

Yelp
Called to place a pick up order, and the woman who answered spent the least amount of time on the phone with me, that she possibly could. Was told "pick up order at window", spent some time deciding if I go to the drive thru lane, that was showing closed.. so I went inside and didn't see a "pick up" counter either. Long story short... beyond the service, or lack of... I ordered a half chicken with mashed potatoes/gravy, and I picked the soup for a starter, and then I got what they called 'mixed seasonal veggies'. Unfortunately I cannot scream "how sad, gross, and disappointing" this meal was, loud enough.

Sara M.

Yelp
Their breakfasts are good. If you carry out they add charges that they don't tell you about. If you charge the add a fee but don't tell you if you pay cash you will avoid a fee and they also add a carry out charge so the food you order gets expensive. I now pay cash to avoid one of the fees but I think it's bad they don't tell you cash won't add at least one of their fees.

Yelp
We were greeted promptly and seated. The restaurant is very clean. It took awhile to be waited on. My order was cream of broccoli soup with a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, fried onion and fries. She brought back a chicken dumpling soup which she quickly corrected. My husband ordered chicken dumpling soup, plain cheeseburger, fries and a side salad. The soups were delicious. Burgers were very dry and a bit undercooked. Fries were decent. I noticed a waitress with a full tray of food she was serving to a tableand her loose hairs were touching the food. Total bill was $28.59. When we paid the bill, the owner asked "how are you today?". Didn't ask about the food or the experience. Will never go back.

Yelp
I like to eat here. This place has the best nicest staff. The food usually takes between 10-15 minutes depending on how many people are with you and usually check up on you for drink refills, opinions on the food, and cleaning up of the table. Inside is pretty calm and chill. There is a bar for people who like bars. But for people who just like to eat the normal part is fine for you. One thing I do not like is the price because it is a little expensive for some people but it is cheap. The price is depending on what you order. I would highly recommend this place for breakfast or lunch. People need to try this if in the area!

Christine S.

Yelp
I was at Benny's on this past Mother's Day. It seems like Everytime I go in there, Owner "Drillon" stares me down. I spoke to a co owner at one time and he said he would talk to him. The food is great. The wait staff are way more welcoming and professional than he is. I would go back there if he would grow up and stop making me so uncomfortable. It's a shame really. Thanks for nothing Drillon!!!

Yelp
Before arriving to Benny's Cafe I was excited, I had never been here but I know some family members that always come here. I read some of the reviews and was very much looking forward to enjoying the friendly staff everyone seems to love. My party was a group of 8 people and we had called ahead of time to make a reservation for noon. We were all there at noon and quickly enough we were asked what we'd like to drink. In my party there were a few special drinks and a few sodas. After a few minutes all the specialty drinks arrived but there was no trace of our sodas. You'd think a Mountain Dew would be fairly easy to get. I did not get my drink until about 12:30. The waitress however didnt' ask us what we'd like to order to eat yet. We figured she wasn't ready yet and would come right back. We did not see our Waitress until about 1PM. At which point I was already fairly upset. If they didn't want to take care of us, they should have just told us, we could have found some other place to go to. It simply shouldn't take 1 hour for someone to take our order. The place wasn't even busy, most tables were empty. At around 1:10 I did get the soup that would go with my food. I was happy to see that the food was at least coming out faster. The bread for the soup however was not a good experience. Felt like bread that had been made a few days ago. The soup itself, lots of flavor but too much salt. I love salt, a lot, so I did drink the cup but even I thought it was a bit too much. Some of the people in my table had salads, some got the wrong dressing, not going to complain about that because it's a simple error, easy to fix. One member did feel like the salad was too wet, adding the dressing looked like dressing soup. By 1:30 I was starting to get upset again because we had not seen our waitress. We could see her working the front of the house but she would never come over to check on us and we had not seen our food yet. However, soon enough the food did finally arrive. Personally I went with the Chicken Alfredo. If I was to rate their Chicken Alfredo alone, I would say they get a 2.5 out of 5. It was nothing special, certainly not the worst I've had, but not a whole lot of flavor to it. I asked for Parm cheese to see if that would help but the parm didn't really add any flavor to it. By 2PM we had all been waiting for a while again without having our waitress come over to check on us. Some of us had been ready for dessert. The place at this point had been the emptiest I had seen it during our visit. I decided it was time to ask the manager what was going on. I went to speak with the manager and explained how we had been there since 12PM and it was now 2PM, we had been waiting a lot without anyone checking on us. He apologized and simply said that they were short staffed. You'd think if they are short staffed they'd try to focus more on the table with the most paying customers. He did promise to send our waitress over. By 2:15 we were finally done with our desserts and ready to go. I'm not sure if the is the type of place where you have to go up front to get your check but we decided we would just go up front because we were not about to wait for it. The waitress herself, she was very nice WHEN we would talk to her, but she was just missing, a LOT. The manager, I was not too impressed with his response, he seemed to think that just saying "we're short staffed" should fix the problem. I wasn't trying to get anything for free here, but just seemed like he didn't really think that the fact that we had been here for 2 hours was that big a deal. The food was pretty bleh, not bad, not good, just ok.

Yelp
So the other day I had a Ruben and my fiancé had the fish fry and both of our meals were way over cooked corn beef is not supposed to be beef jerky nor is fish supposed to be like a hockey puck I could've thrown her pieces of fish like a ninja star at everyone's heads and killed every single one in the restaurant if I'd of wanted to by the time we thought about anything that we were already halfway through our meal so it made no sense to ask for the food to be redone we normally don't have this problem with Benny's so we really don't understand why the food was so bad Getting one meal bad was one thing but both of our meals at the same time? Sorry about this But I think you need new Cook's

J C.

Yelp
Eggs were dry and small portion. Hash browns were undercooked. Friendly service but wouldn't go back.

Yelp
Very family friendly. Lots of seats which keeps the wait times down! Service was pretty good. Hot chocolate was good, came in a cool cup. The food was decent, just a little cold. Clean bathrooms. Has a drive through!

Sandra K.

Yelp
Eat there for thanksgiving food was delicious .and very clean .Hot seated right away.

Yelp
Best affordable fish fry in the area. The staff are so nice and recognize frequent patrons. I love their daily specials and always feel I get plenty of food.

Yelp
I ended up here after my first choice fell through because they didn't have a cook on the premises. I was seated right away and given a menu. The interior was your typical greek diner with lots of wood and fake scenes painted on the walls. Chairs with wheels in front of the tables, booths along the walls. The menu was not one of the huge ones and had all the standard breakfast items. I opted for the Benny's special which was eggs, protein, hash browns and toast with Coffey. I never order Coffey from diner style places because it's never great. Coffey came with my meal and it was nothing to talk about. The food came quick and hot. My 3 eggs were perfect sunny side up. The hash browns plentiful. The toast was the generic three. The sausage links were tasty and a little above average. I will post pictures. Over all the service was good and the breakfast was your average diner/cafe fare. It's your solid you know what to expect style breakfast place.

Yelp
This is a family restaurant with a simple menu so fairly easy to make a dining choice. Staff is friendly, kept the coffee full and checked on me frequently. Unfortunately the food here doesn't match the service or the price. I ordered the Denver omelet, which can with hash browns and toast. The cost with coffee and tip $14. My omelet was small, and they forgot to add the cheese, a very bland flavor with no seasoning added just eggs, ham, and veggies. The hash browns had a strong flavor of vegetable oil. With so much competition there are plenty of other options where you can get more bang for your buck. I was hoping this was going to be a new breakfast option for me, but did not satisfy.

Yelp
Always a good time! Good price! Good food! Good service! Friendly and efficient waitstaff!

Yelp
We were in the area and tried Benny's Cafe for lunch. The restaurant was nicely kept and featured a lot of warm wood trim, booths and tables with chairs on wheels. There was a bar area with a TV. Servers were hustling during the Sunday lunch hour. The menu wasn't huge like some family restaurants, and the prices seemed a bit higher than some places, although apparently dinners include a "Benny's beer" or blush wine. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs for $9.19, with my eggs over medium, toast (you could sub toast for two small pancakes but a bagel or English muffin is an upcharge) and fruit instead of potatoes. Some of the other breakfasts, served all day, included coffee. They had Smuckers orange marmalade packets at the table which I enjoyed. My corned beef hash looked pretty ordinary but tasted a little bit unique, like there was some sort of different flavoring added to it. The eggs were fine and the fruit was OK except for the muskmelon having an off flavor. Looking around the dining room, they seemed to have a little bit of something for everyone, from pasta to burgers to breakfast, desserts and homemade soups.

Jeff K.

Yelp
I've had good meals here, and I've had very, very average to below average meals here.. if you stick to the basics you should be fine, but don't get fancy at this not-fancy former McDonald's.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
Meh. It did the job. I've had way better breakfast/brunch, and unfortunately I've had worse. I make better breakfast at home, but was traveling to MKE and stopped here to avoid a long wait downtown. I was no longer hungry after I left, which was good ... but the food was nothing to talk about. Omelette.. English muffin... coffee edible. Coffee was watery and really not with drinking. Service meh.. wouldn't really recommend... but if you're in a crunch and it's on the way and you're starving... it could be worse.

Jane K.

Yelp
When I realized that all entrees came with alcohol, I asked to substitute for a soda. This was not allowed. So I switched from Ribs $18.00 to eggs $6.00. When I went to pay I told the manager that with the rise of alcohol abuse, and the horror of drunk driving, he basically said if you don't want the drink, don't take it. I told him how this policy had cost him money, as I downsized my order. He shrugged.

Amy F.

Yelp
Oh. My. Goodness. Friendly staff, great service, food is priced well for the portion sizes. Definitely a restaurant for the " wiser" but all walks of life can enjoy just about anything you can think of. Breakfast is all day. Omg their WAFFLES!!!!! So good. Butter was not COLD. It was spreadable. Great great great.

David M.

Yelp
I love Benny's. Fast service, good food, and reasonably priced. It's one of my go-to breakfast spots. Add on to review...Great Bloody Mary's.
google avatar

DeeDee B.

Yelp
I ordered a take out breakfast. I arrived earlier than the 10 minute recommendation. Everything was cold. The hash browns were burnt and drenched in oil. The sausage links were cold and barely cooked. I gave them $10 for the $9 meal, they never returned to the window with my change. My $9 breakfast is in the garbage. I could not eat it because it was making me sick to my stomach. The worse breakfast I have ever paid $9 for, cold, no flavor, burnt, disgusting.

Aiyana D.

Yelp
the service was average didn't come check up on us we had to keep flagging waiter down, food was raw especially the island burger fries and drinks were great. portions where big and we all felt very sick afterwards.
google avatar

Nelson V.

Yelp
I have been coming to Benny's for years! This is just my opinion, but they have the BEST fish fry in Milwaukee. I've had no fish (or fries) like theirs in the city. If you're looking for a good Fish Fry, give them a go!

Wendy L A.

Yelp
Amazing food! Stopped on our way to the airport. Mother's Day along with a long week of travel so we didn't want fast food. No wait to be seated and the restaurant is very homey and clean. I had Fish & Chips which were large pieces and delicious. My mom had the liver & onions. Holy Cow! 3 very large pieces and whole dinner was enough for 3 people! She said it was the best she has ever had out. Great spot and will definitely be back when we travel through.
google avatar

Dudewithabadcat ..

Yelp
The menu is pretty average but they do have some Albanian cuisine. I took them up on their 11.99 Spinach Pie and Qebab plate and hoped for the best. The world must be my oyster because you get a free tap beer with a meal. sign. sealed. and delivered. keywords: value, awesome, free beer?, spinach pies are super flaky and tasty.
google avatar

Brant P.

Yelp
The food is excellent and you have a wide variety to choose from. However, the soup is the best here. They have amazing soup. The service is always very friendly and efficient. We tend to get Manjola and so is wonderful. She is very sweet and makes sure your order is correct. You will have an excellent time at Bennys

Laurie J.

Yelp
For over 40 years my family when visiting milwaukee it's a must that we always eat at Benny's. The food is excellent and for the price its very large portions. The atmosphere is great. I have never experience an issue with staff they are very friendly. For reference in my life time I have easily eaten there at least 50 times. I highly recommend
google avatar

Adam E.

Yelp
A family restaurant with many choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Picture a paper placemat and coffee mug as a standard to every place setting. Very friendly service. The prices are a bit higher compared to other family restaurants, but the food is great. No complaints! The omelettes are excellent!
google avatar

Rohan D.

Yelp
This is the best Albanian restaurant in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, and the second best Albanian restaurant I've ever eaten at. Full disclosure: I've eaten at two Albanian restaurants, La Mama's Pizza in Chicago (the pizza isn't very special but the byrek is delicious), is better, but the difference isn't great enough to be worth the drive. The rest of the food here is typical American diner food (the waitress called me "honey"), the only reason to come here is to try one of the Albanian dishes, or one of the Albanian versions of what we think of as Greek food (like spinach pie).

Asa W.

Yelp
Very nice staff, and is a great place to get a late breakfast/lunch. Have never been for dinner so can't comment on that. Portions are very large and filling.

What N.

Yelp
We went there for the fish fry, what a joke! We waited for quite a while for our fish to be served we were about to leave when they finally brought our entrees. My wife ordered the fish fry and I had the baked cod. Her fish was over cooked while mine was burned BLACK. I told the waitress the fish was burned and I wanted to send it back and have a new one prepared. Two minutes later she came back with my "reorder". It was the same piece of fish just flipped over and it was cold. I asked for the manager and he half heartedly apologized. I would NEVER eat there again . If that's the way they run this place who knows what they do to your food before it is served.
google avatar

Jon T.

Yelp
This is really good comfort food. Breakfast is always solid. At least as good as any typical diner in the area. For lunch / dinner the broasted chicken is delicious. The ribs are good. The burgundy beef tips on Wednesday are especially good. And the chicken Benny, essentially chicken tenders in beer batter, are much better than average. Also we usually get carry out; in winter the drive through pickup window is a nice option. Just ask if it will still be open if calling after 7:30 pm or so.
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
I was very disappointed in the overall sanitation of this place. The floors were grungy & sticky. The cup my water came in was a thick, old looking plastic that was cloudy, scratched & chipped from too much wear. I feel the prices are too high for the low quality food that is served. I had a steak & eggs combo that came with friut & hashbrowns. Everything on my plate was drenched in old tasting grease & the fruit looked shrived & still had rine & stems attached! I will not be back to this place. Thumbs down for me.
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
We had planned and paid the down payment chose the food and cake for my mother's 80th birthday party here. Six days before they contacted us that another party was accidentally booked at the same time on the same day. After we had already sent out custom invitations, people coming from out of town and had to spend an entire day to find another location, contact everyone on our list as to the change in location, and another caterer. All they did was refunded the deposit . I will never be coming here. I can't believe they didn't figure this out since we booked over two months in advance!

Jason J.

Yelp
Good service and clean interior. Potatoes in the skillet were frozen, the mushrooms were canned, the hot chocolate had beautiful presentation but no taste. The cinnamon roll French toast was tasty but dry. The food wasn't served hot but barely warm. Overall the ingredient quality was lacking, so while nothing was "bad", I have to believe there are better options.
google avatar

Deborah N.

Yelp
My favor place to go for breakfast. Everything you order you will like! My week isn't complete until I've had breakfast or lunch at Bennys
google avatar

Fran R.

Yelp
My mother is elderly, and she likes coming here. So I dine here with her, and do not have the same feelings about this place. Everything has a funny taste....and I do mean everything. From the bread, to the tomatoes to the complimentary beer (yuk). Even the bread sticks taste kinda funny. Maybe they have too many items on the menu, and it's difficult to keep everything fresh. Either way, I will keep coming back here with my mother, because she feels she gets a bang for her buck.
google avatar

Squid W.

Yelp
the place takes awhile to make the food but when you get the food it tastes pretty bad. I don't understand why they take their time to make bad food. They have good service though. The workers are nice. I look over and see them sometimes talking to their older customers and they're always laughing and looking as if they're having fun. But service doesn't make the food better. Not the best.
google avatar

Herb E.

Yelp
Been going there now for breakfast for 3 months now They have great food great service and the staff are very friendly. Only thing I don't like is higher prices on weekends.

Rory P.

Yelp
I had a not so well experience at benny's cafe the service was fine but the food is mediocre the benny's skillet was very bland an did not have enough meat in the skillet it had a few chopped up pieces of gyro meat in it it was very disappointing. I will not take another chance on the breakfast food here

Yelp
Stay Away for Party Rentals!!! Bad Service & Management Had a party there on 9-27-13 & was overcharged from menu prices!! Also, bar closes at 8:30, so if you have the room till 10pm, you get NO beverages!! Waitress service sucked, no dirty dishes were picked up, but the food was taken away quickly, so they could re-sell it no doubt! Terrible, will never book again!
google avatar

Yelp
Really fast, friendly service, good food, HUGE portions and reasonable prices. This was really a nice discovery for us!

Catherine J.

Yelp
living here on the south side for over past 20 years, went here years ago, it was good food, good service, but waiter kept circling table while being on a date, it was irritating, did not go back til 2020. i believe it was in march before all of wisconsin was locked down. i decided to give them a try being alone at the time. walked in and was seated in a very crowded bar area, not relaxing at all. i ordered very expensive walleye on the menu. i have eaten great walleye in the milwaukee area for the past 40 years or so along with companions. it was the worst walleye i have ever eaten in my life! they were extremely busy, and i saw someone approach the man in charge, he was not too happy, so i decided i did not want to even deal with him there!. the waitress was the high point of the evening, very friendly and accomodating, the rest of the food was average, nothing to write home about to others. i advise everyone not to go there unless probably for a breakfast, but melrose down the street has them totally beat with their fantastic food entree's. that walleye tasted like it had been in the freezer for years, $17.99 it was a total waste of my money! they lost business with this business woman and all my contacts.....will never go back, not a place i want to give my money to do business with them!!!

Yelp
Decided to try some place I've never been to and thought I would take a shot at here. Reminds me of a Greek Resturant. I sat at the bar and ordered the Benny's Breakfast. 3 eggs, choice of potatoes. choice of meat and toast. Good came quick and was good. I liked being able to watch the local news on the tv in the bar area. I will definitely come back.
