The 13 Best Banh Mi Sandwiches In Austin

"Up in Austin’s original Chinatown, Bep Co Tham is a Vietnamese restaurant from the people behind Texas Bakery, located in the same shopping center. That means that this spot also comes with fresh-baked bread around all of its bánh mì options, which serve as great fluffy and crunchy vessels for a thick layer of pâté, fresh and pickled vegetables, housemade butter, and a large variety of meats. We like the pork patty or the combo here, but there are enough options to keep things fresh for repeat visits. Well, that plus the extensive menu of noodle soups, vermicelli bowls, and rice dishes. " - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion

Bep Co Tham Review - North Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Up in Austin’s original “Chinatown,” Bep Co Tham is a Vietnamese restaurant from the people behind Texas Bakery, located in the same shopping center. Unlike the original spot that focuses on pastries and baked goods, here there’s an expanded menu of Vietnamese classics, including hủ tiếu, spring rolls, and banh mi.  " - Nicolai McCrary

I've visited this place several times, and each experience has been great. Plus, it's a family-owned business, which adds a genuine touch to the dining experience. I recommend giving it a try. Food: The authentic Vietnamese cuisine they serve is truly comforting. Some menu items I like more than others. So far, my favorites are: A1. Grilled Pork Spring Rolls S1. Combo Banh Mi N5a. Char Siu Egg Noodle w/ Wonton (w/ soup on the side) N8a. Shrimp & Squid (w/ sauce & pork broth on the side)

Google
Just exactly what I'm looking for. Down to earth nice people and service. Beef stew with Banh Mi is great I think I almost lick the bowl. And the vermicelli could use a bit more spicy pepper but still great. The herbal grass jelly desert is just so good. Not too sweet and great for summer. We'll be back.

If you want authentic, delicious, and affordable Vietnamese this is the place!!! The salted ice coffee is to die for. The pork is so juicy and tender too! Definitely coming back on the regular!

Google
Rating: 4.1/5 [dine in] Bep Combo Tham has that classic Vietnamese restaurant look and seems to be women-owned. They have a diverse menu, and at the end of your meal, they give you some kind of almond cookie as a dessert. Prices are a bit steeper than I expect it to be for some items. Combo Sticky Rice / Xoi Thap Cam ($13.95): Different from what we typically have since they provided non-traditional sides. The separate components didn't work together and the overall dish didn't have the expected umami punch. Stir-Fried Crab Glass Noodles With Special Sauce / Mien Xao Cua Sot Dac Biet ($16.95): Delicious, but it took me a long time to process this meal. Generous portion of crab, and the crab didn't smell or taste seafoody. Combo 1 Broken Rice / Com Tam 1 ($16.50) + Extra Pork Skin / Bi Them ($3) + Extra Crab Loaf / Cha Cua Them ($3): This was good, but nothing stood out. Crispy Fried Taro With Egg / Bot Chien ($13.99): Crispy and tasty. Comes with a generous side of pickled veggies and shredded green papaya which paired well with the bot chien. Combo Banh Mi / Banh Mi Thap Cam ($7.95): This was so delicious that I wasn't satisfied with eating just half. It reminded me of Vietnam, which I think is thanks to the mayo and pate. Red Thai Tea / Tra Thai Do ($5.50): I've never seen any restaurant sell Red Thai Tea before, so I had to try it. Unfortunately, this tasted and looked like a regular Thai Tea. Almond Cookies: The first time we were here, the cookies were hard as rocks. The second time, they were soft and had a nice, subtle sweetness that cleansed my palate.

Google
Unassuming, family owned and operated Vietnamese restaurant, a must try. We had lunch there yesterday and were pleasantly surprised by how accomplished everything was. The food was authentic, fresh and served by a very friendly and knowledgeable server. Mother and father do the Saigon style cooking to perfection, including the "real" Nem. Unlike all the other "spring rolls", this was made using filo dough for a thin, crisp wrap with the right stuffing. Crunchy and delectable. I am including photos of their extensive menu and offerings as of Dec. 2024. We will definitely be back often though we live outside of Dripping Springs.

Google
It's my second time at this restaurant, and the food is still on point. This restaurant serves tasty, legit, home-cooked style Vietnamese food. The server was very nice and attentive. The owner and chef of the restaurant also stopped by our table and checked on us. They're very sweet also. Totally recommend!

Google
One of my go-to spots for Vietnamese food! I really liked the crab vermicelli! The spring roll appetizer was good as well although the sauce could be more flavorful. The food was reasonably priced. Thai tea and other drinks were expensive.

Happy homemade meal like at home. Attention to details for food presentation. Owner is sweet too

Yelp
The banh canh tom cha (shrimp/crab udon soup) is likely the best you can find in Austin. Their bun rieu is great as well. In addition to their general menu, they also have bakery items such as pate so / pate chaud, banh bao, and Che. Highly recommend for good, authentic Vietnamese food.

Yelp
We were craving some Vietnamese food so we decided to swing by to because of the high reviews. We were greeted by a server who was very energetic and seated us quickly. I really liked that there was a mirror on one wall because while the sun was setting I was able to get a great view even though I wasn't seated across the windows. We wanted to order banh xeo and rice rolls but unfortunately they had stopped selling those a while ago so we ordered a vermicelli bowl and a banh mi. I loved the banh mi. The bread was so soft, it didn't hurt to bite into it or chew and the pork's temperature was like it came right off the stove. It wasn't what I expected for "grilled pork" but honestly I cannot complain because the sweet sauce that was covering the pork balanced out the hotness of the jalapeño. They didn't hold back at all with the amount of pork that they stuffed into it. The vermicelli bowl had the same pork taste that the banh mi did. There was a nice balance between lean and fatty pork meat. The noodles were thinner and shorter than I expected but the portion size was very big. To top off the meal, we got 2 coconut almond cookies on the house from our very passionate server.

Yelp
Bep Co Tham is a bit of an unassuming establishment on the corner of the 'old chinatown' plaza. But inside, the restaurant is bright and spacious with a friendly staff. We got the Beef Stew Egg Noodles and the Pork Vermicelli with Egg rolls. The vermicelli was alright--the pork could use a bit of that char flavor. I also find it less favorable that they don't crush up the peanuts and have them on the dish as halves. But that wasn't my dish so you can take that with a grain of salt haha. The star of the show was definitely the beef stew noodles (N10 or N11 on the menu i believe). You can tell there was a lot of love put into making that stew! So much flavor! I enjoyed it lots, but towards the end, it did get a bit salty for me. For several of their noodle dishes you can pick either rice noodle or egg noodles, which is nice. We didn't get to try any of the drinks, but they have an abundance of offerings from fruit and floral teas to fresh sugarcane juice. Will definitely need to try some next time!

Yelp
This is our favorite spot in Austin for Nem Nuong spring rolls! We wrap them ourselves and love the experience every time. Vietnamese food is colorful and healthy, and the staff is always super friendly. Definitely one of our favorite Vietnamese restaurants in town to get their nem nuong spring rolls to share between 2 or 3 people!

Yelp
This our new go to Vietnamese spot in the area. First of all, the people who work here are so kind and friendly. We loved their extensive menu that has a ton of authentic Vietnamese options. My go to is the mi thieu with egg noodle and a BIG thing of sugarcane. I am a sucker for sugarcane juice so I have to get it anytime I see it, and this is definitely one of the best in the area! They have so many great dessert and drinks options. My partner gets the vermicelli bowls and the portions are generous and it always hits the spot for him. The owner is an incredible baker and they gave us a free almond cookie which as delicious! This is our new regular spot and we will continue to come back here!

Yelp
I was looking for some healing soup so I decided to stop in here. The waiter was very friendly, polite, and attentive. I asked for his top recommendation and he suggested the banh canh. There's not many places in Austin that offer this soup so I gave it a shot. I was definitely not let down. It was a really good portion and well seasoned. I would've loved it more if it was slightly more seasoned/salty (but maybe that's a personal preference). I also got the sugarcane juice and that was soooo good.

Yelp
I recently visited this restaurant with my family and decided to give it a try. It's located in the MT Grocery Store Plaza. The restaurant itself is a decent size, with multiple tables for both small and large groups. I ordered the broken rice dish with pork chop and Chinese sausage, along with a regular-sized sugarcane juice. Overall, it wasn't bad. I particularly enjoyed their chili paste, which had the perfect amount of spiciness for me. However, I wish the dish had included shredded pork skin. The Banh Mi was solid, with plenty of filling and a good amount of pâté on the bread. My sister had the Mi Quang and mentioned that it was decent. Overall, this place isn't bad, and I would come back to try other items on the menu. Service was okay. Did have to wait a bit before getting our order maybe because my sister was there first and told them that she still waiting for people to come.

Yelp
Fantastic! The owner is super super nice and friendly The food is amazing Bông Lan trứng muối is the best yummy yummy

Yelp
We are always looking for quality Asian restaurants and this place is now one of them! Our first time visiting on a weekend for lunch and we were seated right away. I got the grilled pork banh mi and it was delicious. The bread has the perfect amount of crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They do not skimp out on the meat and toppings. The pork was tender and super flavorful. We also ordered the broken rice combo and wonton soup. Both dishes were amazing and fresh. I personally really enjoyed the wonton soup broth. This place is a no frills restaurant that serves up authentic Vietnamese dishes. They also bring out complimentary almond cookies which was the perfect way to end the meal!

Yelp
05.20.2024 - BEP CO THAM - KN KITCHEN - day trip to Austin, Texas - had lunch with my Mom and we both had Banh Mi. I had the Char Siu Pork with Pate and my Mom had the Grilled Beef Banh Mi. I was actually happy with my choice. Definitely a great place to eat. Waitress was very attentive and friendly. The entire restaurant looked very clean and well maintained. Overall I liked it here. The water was a cold pitcher with lime. Very refreshing. Although it was a quick stop- I was impressed enough to want to return and try their other foods in the menu.

Yelp
All our dishes were tasty. My husband thought the hu tieu bowl could have had more sliced char siu pork and ground pork because it didn't have enough protein to fill him up. Bun rieu was good - would definitely order again. We received almond cookies at the end of our meal instead of fortune cookies which was a nice touch. Good service. I love the VIetnamese jelly (agar agar) available for purchase.

Yelp
Very nice people and pretty solid vietnamese food!! It's clean inside and phenomenal service. We typically do family style meals so my mom didn't order anything and they gave us a free drink! They also gave us some cookies to try. The owner/chef (I think) came out and talked with us for a bit which was super cool. She said they had been open for about a year and she used to own another place in the same area but sold it and bought this location. I got the com tam (broken rice) and hủ tiếu with shrimp squid and I asked for the pork on the additional. We also got fried chicken rice plate. All were pretty solid! Very lovely place that I'm excited to bring my friends and family too!
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
Great price for the food quality! Is it the absolute best vietnamese food in Austin? No, but it's pretty dang good quality for the price you're paying. Got the $7 tofu banh mi (it's on the smaller side, but that's fine for me because I find most banh mi to be too big for one serving and too small for two servings). My friend got the beef vermicelli w/ fried egg roll (V5) which was pretty big! Vegetarians, make sure to let the server know that you're vegetarian when ordering the tofu banh mi - it actually comes with pate (which is like a meat paste).
google avatar

Briana N.

Yelp
The food here is so good! I came with a relatively large group, of around 14 and we were able to be immediately seated. The staff was super friendly and quick to get out orders. However, the timing of all the food coming out was kind of random. Everything came out together for the most part, but then three people's dishes took a lot longer to come out. But that might just be because we had such a large group. The food itself was really delicious. It wasn't too heavy and the serving sizes were pretty decent. I had the pork vermicelli bowl and almost couldn't finish it. But I do wish they gave us more fish sauce.

Yelp
I have been in Texas for 6 years from California. I'm from Houston, Texas. I moved to CA and moved back to Texas. I'm spoiled. Weather and food. This sandwich is great. Picture didn't do justice. The tastes is so good. The pate, the butter, the sauce, the meat and even the green jalapeño was spicy not just crunchy. I will go back to try other dishes. Everything looks great. But I have to try before I can say anything. But this place is nice and clean.
google avatar

Charles L.

Yelp
Very simple, in terms of decoration, venue, with solid Vietnamese food. Prices were low in my opinion for Austin; excellent value. Friendly and attentive staff. The place had a very clean, organized feel to it. There was a sign outside that said "soft opening." So I assume they have not been open all that long. Shrimp spring rolls were fresh tasting, with three good size shrimp, and easy to eat rice paper wrapping. I had a noodle soup that included shrimp and squid in a delicious broth, that was not pho, but was a very inviting alternative. Regrettably, I cannot remember the name of the noodles. They were extremely thin and brownish. Really liked them a lot! Grilled pork bánh mì sandwich was almost perfect. Full of grilled pork, cucumber, light on the jalapeños, which was great for me as I'm not a big fan of spicy, and the bread was really good, crunchy on the outside, but soft on the inside. I enjoyed this place, although it's not going to get high marks as a romantic venue. However, the tasty food, friendly servers, and good value make it a place that I will return to.

Yelp
Quan Co 9 is now Bep Co Tham. The new owners are the original owners of KN Kitchen who owned Texas Bakery and served banh mi with customers out the door in the morning. It seems promising, so looking forward to going back. Mi Bo Kho (Vietnamese Beef Stew) that you can choose to eat it with bread, rice noodles or egg noodles. Banh Mi was very similar to what I remembered from Texas Bakery. There's a thick layer of pate where it was not mixed up so much with butter either making it less gooey. The pork had sauce which I'm always on the lookout for. Com Dac Biet (Special Rice Plate) is my highest recommendation, at least before they figure out the family style meals. The rice plate a lot of meats including a shrimp cake wrapped in bean curd. It's inconsistent at the moment, some days you get meatloaf and before I didn't. So they're probably still trying to work it out. Hu Tieu Suon (Rib Noodle Soup) which is not a common noodle soup but good when and hearty. It lacked umami and they don't serve bread sticks but the ribs were fall-off the bone.
google avatar

Ellie N.

Yelp
Soft opening. The restaurant is very clean. Broken rice is well seasoned. You don't really need the dipping sauce anymore. They don't have the full menu yet. Bánh xèo is not in today
google avatar

Jessika H.

Yelp
Great food and service! Everything we ordered was delicious. The vermicelli bowl was one of the best I've had. Will absolutely be back to try more of their menu.

Yelp
This place is so bomb. Best Viet restaurant I have had in Austin. The Broken Rice Combo - Com Tam Suon Bi Cha (bottom) with Pork is DELICIOUS. I love all the variety on the plate and mixing them all into a perfect bite. The sides of pickled jalapenos, chili sauce, chili oil and pickled garlic are perfect additions to the meal as well. The Banh Mi Chao with Xiu Mai (top) was crazyyy. So good, and each item in the skillet is so delicious with the bread.

Yelp
Heard great things about this restaurant by a friend so we decided to give it a try. We went on a Saturday afternoon just after lunch rush hour (not busy). The waitress sat us down quickly and gave us menus. After some time waiting, the waitress never came back to check on us. We waited so long that we just ended up ordering our meal at the check out counter. The waitress seemed more concerned with cleaning the nearby tables. After more time waiting, we still never received utensils or even water. Again, I ended up going to the counter to ask for some water. Once food came out, there were no utensils provided so we just got the utensils and condiments ourselves at the waitress station. Food was just okay - nothing special for the high price tag. Service is horrible.

Yelp
I came on a normal weekday. My plan was to find a place to dine and then go to a boba tea store afterwards to do some work on my laptop. Ended up at Bep Co Tham and ordered one of their specials, the skillet combo. Presentation was great, you get a side salad, a banh mi, and a skillet full of meat so I think $18 is pretty worth it! And the food tasted SO GOOD. Their pate and butter when dipped with chili sauce is next level. The server told me that their pate, butter, meat and stuff were all made by them, no wonder why it's so good and I've never had the same pate anywhere else before. I would just be happy with a banh mi, their pate and butter to be honest. Service was great, nothing to say there. Ambience was also great; it might be because I came on a weekday after rush hour (~3pm), the restaurant was quiet and other tables were also pretty chill when eating and ordering. They have bright interior and a bunch of glass windows which is an environment I love to do work in. So I just stayed there and ordered their butterfly pea boba tea instead (keep in mind their butterfly pea milk tea is the only tea that's Jasmine tea). The presentation for everything including the tea was very nice, and the taste of Jasmine flowers really came through. Totally would come back again!

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday around noon. There were a few small parties already but we were seated immediately. They have small tables wrapped around the place and longer tables in the middle. The server was attentive to us and came to check in as we decided on our order. We shared the chasiu wontonn egg noodle dish and a fried pork bun (sorry forgot the vietnamese name!). I liked the noodle dish but the chasiu tasted a little off for me, almost like it was overcooked? My partner thought it was fine so maybe it's just me not used to having that served in soup. The pork bun was supposed to come in two pieces, but actually came in a giant piece cut in half. It was sizable so I guess it was fine, but still kind of odd. I liked the taste of it besides for the chinese sausage which I'm not usually a fan of anyway. My partner also order coffee, and to our dismay it came powered instead of freshly made. I think it made my stomach hurt a little after, so I'd skip it and grab coffee elsewhere in the plaza!

Yelp
This place is so good. My husband and I had a fantastic experience here. We got the scorched rice appetizer and it was SO GOOD. We had never had anything like it before. It was super crispy and the toppings were delicious. The noodle and pork plate my husband got was also very good. I got the vermicelli and crab dish that was on the menu and was a special that day, it was so delicious. We also got the coffee flan cake and it took all of my effort to not eat it before my husband got a bite! The service was great. Everyone was very nice. It's that kind of hybrid table service where you get sat and order at the table but then go to the counter to pay. Everyone was great. The ambiance is really bright, clean, and simple. Comfortable chairs and tables. There's a wonderful amount of natural light which makes for a very nice lunch date. I like the paintings on the wall as well. This will definitely be a common lunch date place for us now. They have a great menu with some options that are pretty unique for the area. Super happy with the experience.

Yelp
Went here during soft opening. They didn't have BBH so I opted for bun rieu. It's pretty decent. The banh mi thit nguong was average. I didn't like the marinate and it doesn't look "grilled". It's a 3.5 stars restaurant for me. I wanted to order the nem nuong but it's not the Nha Trang version. I need the special sauce with the crunch in the rolls.
google avatar

Lawrence L.

Yelp
Friendly service. We ordered for our group of six (two adults, four kids) and the food was out within 10 minutes. We ordered... C1 - Com Tam (Combo Broken Rice with pork chop) N8 - Mi Hoanh Thanh (Wonton Egg Noodle) V1 - Bun Rieu (Seafood Vermicelli Soup) A10 - Cha Gio (Fried Egg Roll) A9 - Banh Bao Kep Xa Xiu (Char Siu BBQ Pork Bao) Everything was tasty. The egg rolls weren't soggy. My favorite was the special of the day, Bun Rieu. It's listed on their menu as a regular item so I hope it's available every day. The only thing I would improve on is having the food come out all at once. My wife's order came out first, then a couple minutes later one of the kid's came out, then another minute passed before something else came out, etc. I noticed another table of two had one order come out and a few minutes passing before the second order (both bowls of noodle soup of some sort) arrived.
google avatar

Cam H.

Yelp
They were very sweet and nice! Great service. I went during their soft opening. Got to try the vermicelli bowl and I liked it. The nem could be a little bit sweeter, but the egg rolls in the dish were good. I didn't like the dried noodle bowl as much as it was kind of bland, even when dipped into the broth. Tasted better when I added more fish sauce myself. Next time, I will try it with soup instead of having the broth on the side. The broth itself was very good! Spacious inside and has plenty of parking spots. This place replaced Quan Co 9.

Yelp
Love their bahn mi and noodles selection. Everything we have gotten here tastes delicious. The staff is very helpful although language can sometimes be a little tricky when ordering takeout.

Yelp
So delicious! Veggie egg rolls, bahn mi and vermicelli salads are incredible. Great Vietnamese food and very friendly fast service.

Yelp
Nice & clean restaurant. The food was flavorful and in big portion. Will be back for their banh mi next time

Yelp
This is the Vietnamese restaurant that I have come many time, I often order a wonton charchiu egg noodle in here, It is so good. Now I come back with Skillet combo with banh mi. So fantastic. People is very friendly. The asmosphere is fresh and clean. I will be back with your vermicelli next time.

Yelp
The food's so delicious. The Mi Bo Kho is the best choice for people. The service is professional. Everyone is kind and happy The place is clean and classic.

Yelp
Crab paste soup was legit. Very fresh ingredients, clean tables, woman owned. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
The service was friendly, attentive, and helpful. We got the durian sugar cane drink that was so good that we ordered another to go. Banh mi and crab glass noodles were good. They gave us little coconut almond cookies for dessert. We also ordered the coffee and pandan jello and it was soooo worth it!

Chau N.

Yelp
Banh mi is very generous and delicious. Bep Co Tham doesn't skimp on the meat. Highly recommend! Also Call ahead if doing takeout to save time.

Yelp
These guys are so great! I think it might be a family owned business. Everyone is so cheerful and friendly. The food is delicious and they use great quality ingredients. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Super-friendly, fast service. Must try when in or around Austin, TX. The ambience is vibrant. Food is delicious.

Yelp
The best Authentic Vietnamese food in Austin. If you are looking for real Vietnamse food, this is the place to go. The Bún Riêu was made of real crab, veggie is so fresh, very very tasty. My Dad has bánh mỳ chảo, and he said it s so delicious , considering he is super picky on the food because he lives mainly in Vietnam. And he said this is just like home. Don't miss out on the Hủ tíu sườn. The broth was so tasty and less fat. The rib was cooked to the right softness. 5 star for all of the food. My husband also loves the Mì khô. He ate it so fast that I couldn't get the photo. And service was the best as well. Food came out quickly, everyone was so friendly. Definitely will come back soon.

John Q.

Yelp
Great lunch. Had noodles with wontons and banh mi Que which was excellent. Finished it off with a mung bean and matcha moon cake and a cup of tea which was amazing. Perfect end to a perfect lunch. Thank you Tham for your hospitality!

Tapdat 2.

Yelp
Food was very amazing, the proportions are good and service was excellent. We will be returning to this place soon

Manny I.

Yelp
Stopped by for dinner and we ordered the nem neoung tray. Presentation was good, taste is good, vegetables and grilled sausage was fresh. Requested for extra sausage however we were turned down because they do not offer extra meat on the side. I also requested for vermicelli noodles to include in the wrap and again was turned down. I was told they do not recommend the noodles and did not offer extras. Pretty much ruined my dining experience. If you are looking for by the "by the book" and inflexible evening, even if you offer to pay the extra sides, don't do it, there is push back! Two stars for speed and presentation. I am a very honest person and I just read the response from Kenny. There is no integrity to the response.

Yelp
Hands down the best Vietnamese noodle soups , fried chicken rice egg rolls and spring rolls . They have quality broth ! Recommend this place over others in Austin. Try their desserts love the almond cookies too!

Jon E.

Yelp
Bep Co Tham was a welcome surprise that we stumbled upon one Saturday for lunch. We both ordered the Banh Mi and a side of Spring Rolls. The Banh Mi was amazing and can rival some of the more established places in the area. The bread was chewy and fresh with a great crispy exterior. The grilled pork in the banh mi was flavorful and juicy. The nem rolls were also great with the crispy twill but warm/hot peanut sauce was an unwelcome surprise. It is their soft opening, so there were some missteps. - They did forget about our nem rolls. They made them but never delivered them to our table. - They were out of various pork spring roll options, this is probably a soft opening issue. Overall! This is a great new restaurant and cant wait to try it again once they get through their soft opening!

Yelp
My family and I loved this place and we will definitely come back the next time we are in town. We had the banh mi dac biet it was the best banh mi I have ever had, the bread was crunchy yet soft and the crumbs didn't cut the roof of your mouth. The cold cuts in the banh mi were delicious especially the pate not sure if they make their own pate but I could eat that with just plain bread and be happy. We had the xoi thap cam (a dish I like to eat for breakfast) and it was better than we make at home. It had sticky rice, Chinese sausage, tiny baby shrimp, pork floss, Vietnamese pork roll, egg and that's all I can remember at the moment with a side of a yummy sauce. We also had the Vietnamese jello my husbands favorite dessert and my father in law had the pomelo tapioca pudding dessert. I ordered 6 banh mi to take back home to my parents and even they raved about the banh mi even though they are tough food critics and don't compliment anything haha. We don't live in Austin but if we did I would visit this place every week.
