25 Best Zoos in the World

"Operating since 1844, this zoo boasts the greatest variety of species of any zoo worldwide, with more than 26,000 animals representing over 1,500 species, including polar bears and the country’s only giant pandas. For an extra fee visitors can book exclusive behind-the-scenes tours and encounters, while the institution’s conservation efforts support species from okapi in central Africa to rhinos in India." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. We visited Berlin Zoo during Christmas week with our kids, and it was a wonderful experience. Even in winter, the zoo is well organized and very enjoyable for families. Many indoor enclosures and animal houses were open and warm, which was perfect for children. The zoo is spacious, clean, and easy to walk around, and we loved seeing iconic animals like the pandas and elephants. There were also festive touches that made the visit feel special during the holiday season. Our kids had a great time and learned a lot. Highly recommended for families visiting Berlin, even in winter!

One of the most amazing zoos I have ever visited. And I've visited zoos across the world! The enclosures are uniquely personalized to fit the animal's needs and resembel their natural homes 1:1. The indoor housing areas are spacious, filled with enrichment items so that the animals are comfortable in the cold season. The dedication this zoo has for conservation efforts are superior to even some "sanctuaries", and the information on the animals presented in this zoo is concise, easy to remember, and really educative for hoth adults and young ones alike. Not only this, but the architecture is impressive, most indoor exhibits resembling architectures culturally impactful for the regions from which the animals come from. The variety of species is equal to none in Europe, if you have a favorite animal, you can probably find it here. Logistically speaking, the zoo is accessible for people from all walks of life, and the facilities here offer a wide arrange of drinks, reting areas and food, at a very reasonable price compared to other zoos! My last visit was on december 30, 2025. Some animals were not accessible to the public, but even so, most of them were. If don't want to miss anything, the zoo posts publicly its scheduled renovations, animal additions or restrictions etc on their website, so I recommend planning in advance!

Zoo Berlin is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression. The park is vast, green, and thoughtfully designed, with habitats that feel spacious and well integrated into the surrounding landscape rather than artificial enclosures. Seeing the giant pandas up close is an unforgettable highlight, but the experience goes well beyond that. From wolves moving calmly through rocky, open areas to reptiles resting in carefully controlled environments, the variety of species is remarkable and well curated. The balance between animal welfare, conservation, and visitor experience feels evident throughout the zoo. Paths are easy to follow, the setting is peaceful despite the size, and there is always a sense of discovery around every corner. It is a place that appeals both to animal lovers and to anyone looking for a relaxing, immersive experience in nature right in the heart of the city. A truly impressive zoological garden, worth including in any Berlin itinerary.

I had an amazing time visiting the Berlin Zoo. It’s one of the most impressive and well-organized zoos I’ve ever been to. The variety of animals is outstanding — from giant pandas and big cats to exotic birds and unique species you rarely see elsewhere. Each enclosure is spacious, clean, and thoughtfully designed to resemble the animals’ natural habitats. The zoo is also beautifully landscaped, making it a pleasure to walk around. There are plenty of shaded paths, resting areas, and great spots for families with children. The staff are friendly and always ready to share interesting facts about the animals. Overall, the Berlin Zoo offers a wonderful experience for visitors of all ages. It’s educational, entertaining, and truly memorable. I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Berlin!

We had a great time overall. Arrived a bit later in the day, so some animals were already in their indoor areas and not visible, which gives us a good reason to come back again. Definitely a place worth revisiting with more time.

Berlin Zoo delivers a memorable experience for animal lovers and families alike. It offers a vast variety of species in beautifully maintained enclosures and lush gardens. It stands out for its impressive animal collection, including iconic pandas, elephants, and exotic birds, all presented in habitats designed to mimic their natural environments. Zoo is well organized and easy to navigate through and enjoyable to all ages. Do not miss: Rhinos that are truly magnificent and the unique show that the seals will offer especially if you have small children.

This was my third time visiting Berlin Zoo. It is the best zoo we’ve ever been to. Absolutely huge and so many different animals. You can tell they’re well looked after and have plenty of space. The red pandas and pandas are adorable and you can get really close. The brown bears are also a favourite!! Just a really great place and great value for money. It’s super clean too with lots of bins. Remember to wrap up warm cos you’ll be outside a lot! We booked in advance to save money and the more time you book in advance the more you’ll save.

I’ve never seen/know some of the species , and this Zoo have it. The habitat design was also very beautiful. Though it was a shame that most animals were hiding in their shelter during the cold winter. Also reptile floor was under renovation in the Aquarium, too bad. Nevertheless, I had a good time here. My highlights were the swimming seals 🦭 , rabbit-eating tiger 🐅 , and the energetic gorillas 🦍
