Bernal Cutlery

Incredible knife store. I visited from Florida, and purchased a vintage chef's knife. I was impressed by their wide selection of new and vintage knives, and I am extremely happy with the lucky find of a 1960s vintage German chef's knife that I purchased here.

Nice essential supply of cutlery. Probably a small representation of the larger inventory of their major store in the Mission District. As a visitor to SF, and whenever I stop by the Ferry building shopping area, i never fail to peak in the store. This time I actually researched their website to see all that they offer. I found their "inaccurate" collection. A series of modified carbon steel knives cleaned up, reshaped and sharpened. Beautiful bone handle. I got a nice utility knife for a reasonable price. The store attendant was helpful. Patiently waited as I made my decision.

I could not select 'cutlery' or 'knife shop' or what-not as a category. Fortunately, the name of the store pretty much lets you know what one can find at Bernal Cutlery in the Ferry Building. In addition to selling cutlery, both new and vintage, BC sells kitchenware, various other assorted cooking tools and some really interesting sauces, spices and tinned fish. I was really taken with the Japanese products on the shelves as well. Have you ever heard of or used a piece of fabric with which to wrap and carry various items? Well, you can now as BC carries these brightly-colored cloth pieces. Look up 'furoshiki' if you're curious. If one were interested in knife-sharpening services, then the Valencia shop is where you would still go. In the new year, there may be, if I've understood correctly, the ability for customers to drop knives off at the Ferry Building location to then be sent and sharpened at the Valencia location. BC in the Ferry Building is in the process of working out the logistics, so we shall see what the new year brings! And the icing on the cake is that the staff are engaging and knowledgeable! Of course, check out Bernal Cutlery if in the Ferry Building or make a special trip as it is worth a visit.

Poorly managed. Saw something we liked at the ferry building in their satellite store, but did not purchase it that day. Went to their flagship store the next day in the Mission District, and was told that they only carry it in there satellite store. It was a small item. What store only sells stuff from their satellite, but not from their main store? When we went back to their satellite store at the ferry building the next day, they opened later than their scheduled hours and we again had to wait to purchase a simple small item. They really need to get their act together. Better management is needed.

Tucked away inside the ferry building is the new Bernal Cutlery location. They have a small selection of knives as well as some accessories (plates, sharpening equipment, etc.). My favorite part of this location is the extremely knowledgeable staff. I asked to look at a knife and they told me what it's made of, how well it holds an edge, care and maintenance. I could only imagine what to expect at their main Valencia Street location! I left with a new knife and with it came a coupon for a free sharpening service for my knife.
