The Best Dougnuts in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Drawing inspiration from the Mile End’s traditional Greek and Jewish shop owners of the mid-twentieth century, this unassuming doughnut shop launched with a bang in early 2021 and over 20 (well-priced) varieties available." - Daniel Bromberg

A Sweet New Old-School Doughnut Shop Opens in Mile End | Eater Montreal

"On Bernard Street just west of St-Laurent, a brand-new, old-school doughnut shop began serving jumbo glazed rings to snaking queues over Mother’s Day weekend, and I saw two sold-out days that signalled Mile End denizens are charmed. Run by father-son duo John and Dean Giannarakis with friend George Giannopoulos (the son of one of the founders of Au Vieux Duluth), the team draws inspiration from the large size and low price of classic Jewish and Greek purveyors so anyone—even children—can come with $5 for a coffee and a doughnut. The classic glazed is $1.50 (a dozen for $16) while deluxe toppings go to $3, keeping them competitive with chains like Tim Hortons. Through the front window you can watch a doughnut maker glaze jumbo confections and see fresh ones bobbing in vats of oil; the menu includes light, pillowy yeast doughnuts and heavier, moist cake doughnuts, just over 20 flavours (including Boston cream, maple-glazed, peanut butter and jelly, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Froot Loops, and rainbow sprinkles) as well as cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, and braided rolls. Bernie Beigne officially opens at 23 Bernard Street West on May 14 and will operate Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or until supplies last." - Valerie Silva

Google
Best donut I’ve had in my life! So light and fluffy! You can tell it was fresh! We went for the original first (you must!), and then went back in for seconds! They gave us a free one when we came back in! Cinnamon sugar. Very friendly, and quality product. 100% recommended stop if you’re seeking out the best eats in MTL. 🍩

Google
Amazing donuts and that apple fritter is no joke! Great prices and service. Not much area to sit and enjoy though so be expected to take it to go. We will be back for sure.

Google
Amazing donuts, best in North America! I’m from Chicago, where cake donuts are the norm. We don’t do yeast donuts well. So coming to Bernie Beigne is always a treat! Their donuts are extremely soft, never tough or dry. Toppings are flavorful and very generous - just look at the bacon. Staff are quick and welcoming. Flavor selection is impressive, no bad choices. I wish it was closer to me!

Google
I’ve been to over 85 countries and have a crippling sweet-tooth. These are the BEST apple fritters bar none that I have ever had the pleasure to experience. I knew they were a hot commodity so I called ahead to catch them after they made their last batch for the evening. They are ENORMOUS and yet the same price as the rest. I’m more of a purist so the best donuts I had (aside from apple fritters) was the apple cinnamon filled, Boston cream was excellent and real quality cream, followed by powdered strawberry filled. All high quality ingredients that you could tell the difference. We need more places like this that emphasise high quality and not just the usual instagram BS* this entire box including the fritters was only $25. That’s very good value for money in today’s market for these quality of donuts. Next time I’d just get all fritters if I wanted the most bang for your buck!

Bernie Beigne wasn't on my radar while I was in Montréal with my family, yet it ended up being one of the most memorable eats of our trip. So much so, we ended up going twice. I'd even go as far as saying the donuts here are the best I've had yet. The donuts had a great, fluffy and airy texture. Of the 8 I tried, the cotton candy was my favorite. It was the most visually appealing, and wasn't overly sweet considering it was cotton candy flavored. The Boston cream was my second favorite. It was easily the heaviest donut of the 8 because of its filling, but was the highest quality Boston cream I've had. The rest of the donuts were all worth getting, but the two mentioned above stood out the most. Below is my ranking of all the donuts I tried: 1. Barbe à Papa (Cotton Candy) 2. Crème Boston (Boston Cream) 3. Oreo 4. Caramel Salé (Salted Caramel) 5. M&M 6. Crème Sure (Sour Cream) 7. Simpsons 8. Kit-Kat Whether you're a donut connoisseur or just someone looking for something sweet to eat l, I can't recommend this enough.

Google
Hands down the best donuts in Montreal! Fresh, right out the oven. Not overpriced but make sure you are ready to stand in line they get really busy but don’t worry the line moves quick. I would stand in line for an hour for their donuts. Give it a try it’s amazing!

Google
Apple fritters are my favorite type of donut and this place is famous for them. Size of four regular donuts and served hot and fresh. Best tasting I've ever had! Also tried: Lemon meringue (incredible! Filling tasted like pie), basic glazed (amazing and fluffy), Boston cream (solid, very good representation of this type), and double chocolate (good but not the best they had).

Google
Some of the best donuts 🍩 I’ve ever had! Whether you go for a classic or one of their filled options, every bite is fresh, flavorful, and satisfying—and they definitely don’t hold back on the filling. Even just waiting outside, you can smell the sweetness in the air and see the donuts hanging in the window, making your mouth water before you even step inside. The shop has a fun, welcoming vibe and everything feels handmade with care. An absolute must-stop in Montreal for any donut lover. I’ll be dreaming about these until my next visit.

Yelp
This is now our favorite donut place of all time. The donut was so soft, sweet but not sugary and they did not skimp on anything. The strawberry and cream fillings were just overflowing when we opened them up! We arrived about 9:45am and we were number six. While waiting we got to watch them prepare their glazed donuts right by the window entrance. Once inside we found out that they do not make their Apple fritters until around noonish and they'd be ready for sale by 1pm. Keep that in mind if you have your heart set on the fritter. By the time we left the line extended more than half the block. Overall worth the visit and calories!

Yelp
Amazing apple fritter, probably the best I have ever had! The donuts were great as well, and very filling! The service is quick and efficient despite the long line up. Will be adding this to my list of places to go every time I go to Montreal!

Yelp
These photos are from last year in the summer. I tried to come here today but the store was closed! I was so sad because when I first came here in the summer of 2022 these donuts were honestly the BEST donuts I ever had from any donut shop. They were big donuts at a great price! The history behind the shop is hilarious and definitely worth a read if you ever stop by to buy one of these delicious treats! Absolute 10/10 I highly recommend this place whenever you stop by Montréal. Just make sure you don't try going there anytime from January 1st to the 3rd haha

Yelp
Excellent donuts and great service! This place is packed at all times and they run out of their Apple fritter very fast. However everything else is equally good. You really can't go wrong. The donuts are light and airy and have just the right amount of sweet. There's no real seating so be prepared to take them to go or eat them in the fly.

Yelp
Bernie Beigne/ donuts are one of THE best donut shops I've ever had wooow !!! Found this place by fluke it was on the way to where we had to go and I told the hubby to double park because I wanted to give this little place a try!!! It's such a cute little spot looks so beautiful inside As you walk in, the scent of fresh donuts hits you on your way in! Donuts everywhere this place is wild they got so many fancy flavours and variety of donuts. I went for their basic ones just the sugar donuts and boy oh boy they did NOT disappoint!! The texture was extremely fluffy and just incredibly delicious and fresh! I definitely recommend the donuts on their own without any fancy shmancy toppings... like the dough was super soft super fresh i was so surprised with this new found gem!! I also went with their apple Fritter it's humongous!! Like it's the size of 6 donuts filled my entire box haha it was good but I'm not an apple fritter person it was just what I had to get to say I got it lolol Customer service: really nice and quick got served by a nice girl at the counter she was super sweet and friendly! Overall: SUPER LUCKY how I found this place by fluke!! Totally worth it and definitely recommend this place will be back guaranteed ! A definite must try if you're in the area Cheers

Yelp
Went there early on today to get a deozen of donuts which are not only delicious , but also really fresh and huge . Also really great customer service and they got really creative with the donuts they're making . defiitely would recommend this place

Simon B.

Yelp
Great donuts. If you want the best you can find, this is the place. Rivals Krispy Kreme, I'd say their different flavors beat them.
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
The donuts are great, with a variety of flavour to choose from, especially the gigantic apple fritter. Really fluffy, with nice toppings.

Yelp
A nice little donut shop in Mile End. If you're using the bike lane from Bellechasse unto St-Laurent, you can make this a pit stop! The donuts were fresh, big and flavorful. Need ideas for your next sweet treat? Go here!

Yelp
OMG!!!! These are the best doughnuts in town. We went there for the first time on Friday and we loved it so much we were back again on Saturday. The doughnuts at Bernie Beigne are as good as they look. And they look pretty freaking amazing hanging there in the front window. They are perfectly light and chewy. They must be made with top notch ingredients as they don't leave any of that weird feeling in your mouth when you eat them. We've tried a bunch of different flavours and none of them disappointed. Even the cake style doughnuts were wonderful, light and not too dense. I just can't get enough of this place! But , I'm going to need to take a break, at least for a few days, to give myself the chance to burn off the calories.

Yelp
Delicious doughnuts! So happy to see another homemade doughnut place opened up in the area after Chez Boris closed. Bernie Beigne serves a lovely variety of doughnuts that range from classic flavours like boston cream and original glazed to some fun creations like fruit loops or smurf! a half a dozen classic doughnuts will cost $12 which is an amazing price considering the size and quality of the doughnuts. I got the boston cream, the smurf, the Simpson, the maple, the original glazed, and the Oreo. My favourites by far were the original and maple. They tasted just like Krispe Kreme but without the processed element to it. Dense and doughy, sort of like a cake like consistency if you're a fan of those kinds of doughnuts. And the glaze is perfectly light and sugary. The smurf and Simpson doughnuts are quite similar in taste, the only real difference is the colour. I'd say the Simpson is slightly sweeter and bigger since it's meant to look like the cartoon version. Both are good if you like sprinkle doughnuts. The oreo one felt a bit too ordinary for my taste since all the others stood out but it was still good! I did not try the boston cream as that one was for my boyfriend but my friend loved that one! Highly recommend checking out if you're in the neighbourhood!

Yelp
Completely delicious. We were walking to Jean Talon after waiting in the St Viateur bagel line (yes... touristy things), and we ran into this place. With their ridiculously drool-worthy window display, you can't walk by without going in. The donuts are so light and fluffy, fresh, fragrant, and all around delectable. They also make a darn good French crueller. I particularly loved the plain glazed and sugar donuts. They also have fun flavors, too. Prices are incredibly reasonable and I highly recommend.

Yelp
Amazing!! This place is a must go when in Montreal, so fresh, light and tasty! Will be back to try more

Yelp
If you need a sugar fix and want to go for gold. Try Bernie. The simple maple is the best!

Yelp
Mmmm, donuts. Such pretty, fluffy and wonderfully large marvels. It is obvious @berniebeigne is very popular as a lineup of hungry customers flood the intoxicatingly beautiful bakery scented Bernard Street at opening time. The always fresh (more than a day! ) intensely flavoured donuts made us forget any dietary control we have may have been exercising (it's starts next week, we swear! ) and the lovely aesthetic made us want to rock the very cute merchandise.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while walking around and so glad I did. Fantastic donut shop with various flavours available, smells great inside as the donuts are all baked fresh on site daily. The maple bacon donut and the classic honey dip are both great options, but there is many to choose from. Called in twice during my stay in Montréal and both times the staff were very friendly. Will absolutely call in again next time I'm in town!

Yelp
Been wanting to try out Bernie Beigne donuts since they opened and finally got to try them and they were amazing! We ended up getting 12 donuts plus a bonus one for the car ride which was the cinnamon sugar donut and it was so light, soft & pillowy! All of the donuts were fresh and so good! My favorites were the double chocolate donut and the apple fritter! I also loved how all of the donuts had just the right amount of sweetness. Didn't get any of the donuts with cereal on them because I'm not a fan of cereal donuts, but if you're into that, go for it! This box of 12 donuts were finished in 1 day and we were only 2 people! Bernie Beigne is now my favorite donut place, I'm hoping to go back there when they have the coconut donut because I have a craving for coconut, and obviously will be getting a dozen! Best time is to go in the morning, they often sell out! I'm glad I don't live anywhere close to Bernie Beigne, I have a feeling I would be eating a donut every morning! That's how good they are.

Yelp
Throughout my life, I've always held my jaw in high esteem. Last week, I have come to the understanding that jaw insecurity is a real issue and that the world outside is truly a grand place. It cost me $3 to hoist this apple fritter with two hands, unsteady from the lack of exercise during the pandemic whereupon I thrust my confident mouth on a corner of the fresh and delicious treat. I leaned back, shocked at how good the donut was but also at the insignificance of my impact on the beigne's land mass. What I thought was a crater was but a fleeting pebble missing from the plateau. My partner observed my distress and was very supportive and consoled me, saying that we would finish together. The regular glazed donut was also very tasty. Can't wait to come back next year.

Yelp
Amazing apple fritter! This is less than half the size of one of them! Bit of a line outside on a Sunday morning but it's 100% worth the wait

Yelp
Yummy spot for donuts!! They are always fresh & delicious. Worth trying if you are walking around the area!

Nivetha S.

Yelp
So happy I came across this little donut shop! Probably one of the best donuts in town!!! They have a variety of donuts to choose from at a very good price. The 6 donuts were 14$ tax included All the donuts are super tasty and the donut itself is soft and fluffy, the perfect donut really The flavours we tried were : Oreo, original, Double Chocolate , kitkat , maple bacon and pink sprinkles It's a must try!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
This is the best donut shop in Mtl, hands down. I live 45 minutes drive away from the shop, but I still make it a point to drive by and pick up a box of 6 donuts when I am craving sweets! They have every type of donut you can think of; kitkat, oreo, reese, cheesecake, chocolate, powdered sugar, maple bacon are the ones I frequently buy and they are all superb! If you love sweets you gotta try this place !

Neil D.

Yelp
Friendly service and phenomenal eats, particularly the apple fritter. I learned about Bernie's on YouTube as a must-visit and I couldn't agree more. This was literally my last stop before leaving Montreal for New York and I'm so glad I did.

G K.

Yelp
Friendly staff and really tasty, fresh donuts - try the classic honey-glazed and blueberry jam filled donut.
google avatar

Rosi R.

Yelp
Great donuts, original flavours and so delicious. A donut shop that opened in the mile end neighbourhood that's social media famous. Definitely worth trying.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Absolutely heavenly doughnuts - light, fluffy and soooo tasty! Reminds me of the old style shops my grandpa would bring me to when I was young! So excited to welcome this gem into the neighborhood!

Ana C.

Yelp
I tried the Oreo donut and it was delicious! I want to try all. Price is good too. It closes early.

Natasha H.

Yelp
Apple fritter was so huge. We shared it and still threw out over 1/3. But it was the best Apple fritter of my life. Big apple chunks, soft dough inside, crispy outside. Seriously amazing. My husband also got a maple bacon donut and really loved it.

Karin M.

Yelp
Love, love, LOVE the donuts! Great varieties! Much imagination. Staff is so friendly and nice. Management must be great bc staff always seems happy! They taste like Tim Hortons used to back in the '70's when I was a kid and later when I worked there, before they went all a$$hole corporate and ruined their product. Would give them 5 stars but they aren't open for me to get my donut fix 24 hours a day!

Zain K.

Yelp
Large, fresh, delicious donuts + the owner was extremely friendly and nice, especially to our two young kids. Please go, and tell all your friends too!

Maurice T.

Yelp
If your looking for real donuts, this is the place. Tried different flavours and each and everyone is better than the last. Some of my favourite are Boston cream, blueberry and coconut chocolat. They are always fresh and delicious. Definitely a must if in the area.

Samantha W.

Yelp
Food is amazing and great prices. Staff was also very nice. The Apple fritter is huge

Gregory H.

Yelp
Delicious old-fashioned donuts. The classic glazed donuts are like puffs of warm sweet air.
