London’s Best Fish and Chip Shops | Where to Eat Fish and Chips | Eater London

"The whole world can be found on Old Kent Road, but there is still room for Bert’s Fish Bar just off the main drag on East Street, which has been there — as residents might say — for donkey’s years. A common complaint of London fish and chips is that they simply aren’t decadent enough, that too often they don’t leave the stomach winded in a fat coma. There’s no such worry at Bert’s where the knobbly end of batter on the fish is as thick as an arm, giving an edible handle a Cornish miner would be proud off. The waiting time here has always been 15-20 minutes because that’s how long pleasure takes, with the reward of handsome, bronzed chips, as decadent and crunchy as they should be." - Jonathan Nunn

Great Fish and Chips, big portions, non-greasy too, which makes us return every time we fancy Fish&Chips. Please give this place a try, you won’t be disappointed, we love it here. Our favourite Fish bar by far, and the owner/manager is very pleasant and polite too.

I just visited this last night, April 2025. The night b4 I was with a friend in a friend's flat and he came in with food from this fish shop. Was totally on top of it's game and me not far staying from it said... I Gotta try it....! I'm so sorry no photos... But I will because it is on my hit lists. Not only the food but the vibes from owner, workers and customers was so positive u could have run your house off it. Fisk cake is on budget list. Avoid Fish and chips....... Definitely

Yelp
Workers are really friendly and welcoming! Had my first cod fish & chips here (im from US). Apparently their cod is their most popular item. The cod was HUGE, juicy and can be eaten even without tarter sauce. My friend who lived in the area said the price was amazing for the size and quality compared to other fish & chip places. My other friend got chicken wings and said they were really good.

Yelp
I've heard this place can be hit or miss, but the two times I had takeaways, the food was good. Very inexpensive place but massive portions. I believe the owners are a married couple as well, which I appreciate. I had the battered sausage and a large order of chips the first time. I split the large chips with a friend, so it came out to £2.10 for me. Everything was wrapped up nicely for us. When you unwrap your food, it is quite greasy but that's what I'm looking for really when I'm eating sausage and chips. It was perfect as it was, greasy but delicious. I only regret not having some sauces. At the counter, they do have some sauces like ketchup or mayo and I wish I had taken that to go somehow as well. Second visit I had the classic fish and chips. I knew from before that Bert's portions were huge so I ordered the small cod and small chips. Again, quite a hefty takeaway for maybe £5. The lady added oil and vinegar. You could really taste it on the fish and it was perfect. Extraordinarily filling. Would definitely recommend, but perhaps on an infrequent basis, as the food is obviously not the healthiest.
