Best Restaurants at Folly Beach and Sullivan’s Island | Eater Carolinas

"Bert’s Market isn’t a restaurant, but it is an icon on Folly Beach. The 24-hour corner store is well known as stop for made-to-order sandwiches and just about everything else you need for a day at the beach. Bert’s puts it best: “Patronized by freaks, surfers, skaters, crunks, retirees, tourists, stoners, day trippers, hippies, hipsters, and regular folk, Bert’s is the rockingest grocery in town.”" - Erin Perkins

Guide to Folly Beach, South Carolina

"Browsing Bert’s Market is a Folly Beach experience every visitor needs to have at least once. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, Bert’s is technically the only grocery store on the island, but it’s a lot more than that. Along with your typical groceries, you’ll also find household goods, wine, fishing supplies, a hot food bar, and a full-service deli." - Travel + Leisure Editors

First off the danish they get brought in a few days a week are delicious. Skip the muffins. Also skip the breakfast. Ordered 3 of the French toast sandwiches and waited 45 minutes for them. Didn’t seem to make food in the order it was placed in. Plus they were out of strawberries so we ended up with blueberries. Fine but not what we ordered. The sandwiches weren’t even edible, the cream cheese isn’t sweetened at all and we didn’t receive syrup to dip them in. They were just gross honestly. The PB&banana was ok but soggy and undercooked. Not worth the cost or time spent waiting on them. Lost the burrito we ordered and had to wait longer to get that. Expensive breakfast and most wasn’t even eaten. Workers were all very nice but wearing dirty aprons and touching faces/hair. Overall the store will have a lot of essentials you might need, especially drinks/snacks.

Google
Fun little market on the island. A little pricey but what do you expect with it being the only store on the island? They pretty much have everything you need from ice cream to burgers and pizza, breakfast!! Open 24hrs a day too! Fun place to go too! My teenagers love this place!

Google
Great corner market with all the essentials! Toiletries, medicines, plenty of food to take and make, fruit, drinks, everything you need from a convenience store. Amazing ice cream in the best cookie cones! Wonderful staff, definitely recommend.

Summer Dawn

Google
My aunt LOVES this place so we thought we'd stop in for some ice cream. It was looking a tad bit melted to our liking so I let my aunt roam. There's plenty of things in here, I'm sure it's a fantastic convenience store. They've also got a "B" rating for their food services, which isn't the worst I've seen, but still not my cup of tea.

Google
You can't beat Berts. It's undeniably the best spot on Folly. Just local goodness from the food to the people to the feeling of the place itself. Everyone loves Berts! My favorite thing about Berts is that you never know what you'll find. They have so many fun things from local kombucha to ice cream shaped like a chicken drumstick to the best selection of delicious pies I've ever seen!

Jahn Weakley

Google
The perfect spot to stop and grab a drink, snack, bite to eat, trinket, or anything else to make a trip to Folly better. Their breakfast sandwiches are some of the best Ive tried in the area. One of the gems that give Folly the heart and soul I love.

Nicholas Helton

Google
For my understanding this place is open all the time. They have really good pastries. They also have a deli, though I have not had anything from there, it does look appetizing. The prices here do seem to be somewhat increased, but it is the price you pay for convenience if you're staying at Folly.

Google
I love the history and the vib of this place, except for the employee that yelled at me, when I couldn't find their hidden ice machine, my interactions with the rest of their staff have been great. It is expensive to shop here but super convenient, and they have a little of everything. Now that I know where the ice machine is, I'll be back.

Yelp
Great selection of food! A mini grocery store with warm food (sandwiches) and some fresh vegetables. Small store and the line can get long very quickly but moves fast. The 3 star rating is because the prices are seriously jacked up. Taking advantage of the location with tourists and the liquor store next door I am sure. I get it, but maybe not a place Locals could afford to shop at on a regular basis. But, overall still a great little store!

Yelp
Great shop! Super friendly! The breakfast was great! The booze/wine selection were great too! Came by multiple times during our stay! Easy place to get anything you need for a stay in Folly!

Yelp
I have been a regular at Bert's Market for many years, always enjoying the friendly and chill staff. However, my recent visit was extremely disappointing. I went to buy a beer, water, and a chicken sandwich when the young cashier, with a ponytail, abruptly asked for my ID and didn't even give me a chance to respond before refusing to sell to me without any explanation. I found out later that is name is Colton. I am unsure of the spelling. Frustrated, I went to another register with an older, more relaxed employee. While checking out, the first cashier, Colton, called for a "code 37" over the radio, and another employee with a ponytail came over to question me rudely about my ID, accusing it of being fake. Their behavior was completely uncalled for and disrespectful, especially since I am clearly over 21. Before this encounter, Colton was yelling at the customers in the market to checkout with him or at the other register (Literally yelling). No one was even ready to checkout. This kind of power trip is unacceptable. Until these two employees are no longer there, Bert's Market has lost my business. Very disappointed in how such a great place can be ruined by a couple of rude staff members.

Yelp
Went in to grab some caffeine this morning. And the shelf said all 8.4 oz Red Bulls were 2.99. Grabbed one and went to the cashier. Well it rang up 40 cents more. I mentioned the shelf showed 2.99. And she looks over her shoulder and you can see it does show that. Her response was oh. We don't go off those prices. We go off what they ring up as. How is that even legal? Here I wanted to help a small business instead of a corporate gas station. And this is the experience I got. The places isn't that big. And it was a quiet morning. No one else in line. KYARRA the cashier needs some more training on customer service. I can't believe a store run like this has such good reviews. I would give zero stars if I could. Definitely false advertising.

Yelp
Cool little 24 hour corner store in downtown folly beach. You can find literally anything there which is fun. We came for the 75 cent hotdog and ice cream. I love that they keep the buns warm underneath! they had a whole area devoted to sandwiches and other food options, snacks, wine and other random things you need in a beach town. Unfortunately they ran out of the double Oreo by the time we went hubby was super bummed, but the strawberry was still good. I got cappuccino on a waffle cone and it was tasty. It was $5 for one scoop, is that normal? Or am I just cheap when it comes to ice cream cones lol either way I'll be back for the hotdogs and it's a cool spot. The guys behind the counter were nice and very efficient!

Yelp
You can never go wrong at Bert's! Want to stop in and play piano while you grab a bottle of wine, free coffee, mozzarella sticks, sandwiches, or any grocery items you could think of? Do it here. Want to do that at 2am? No problem. Want your dog to jump on the counter for pets and treats? Idk, maybe you shouldn't, but you can! The most eclectic little beach grocery store to ever exist and I love every second of it. Of course, prices are going to be higher than one of the chain grocery stores over the bridge, but they're worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
Bert's IS the 'go to' spot in Folly Beach. Coffee is FREE and they are open 24/7. 'We May Doze, But We Never Close' is their tag line This is the closest grocery store to Folly Beach, the Harris-Teeter is about 2 miles North on Folly Road. They have a good selection of dry goods and meats, over the counter drugs and cleaning supplies. A nice selection of wines and large selection of beers, even Delirium Tremins. They have a good selection of hot prepared foods, like cheeseburgers and breakfast burritos as well as wraps. The Hot Dog station is very popular so you can fix your own with all the fresh condiments and it's only $1.00, a deal that can't be beaten. They have two large ice boxes out front and plenty of off street parking.

Yelp
Bert's is the only market in town in Folly and it never closes .... It was busy every time I went in. They have a small market for food and sell beer and wine. They do a big sandwich and carry out business as well. Not exactly a foodie experience but it got 5 stars because they have 24 hour $1 hot dogs you self serve with all the fixings including chili, cheddar cheese and onions. Once I discovered this I was in trouble! They were nice big franks and the fixings were really good. I am pretty sure it is a requirement to be a stoner to work here and all the people are the best!!!!

Yelp
This.place.....so much to say. It's not what you'd expect at all but is everything. It's a convenience store, an ice cream shop, a deli, wine shop. Everything you need at the beach. The service was fast which is also appreciated. It's a small store but has essentials that you might need on island.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
If you're on the island, this is by far the most convenient place to get whatever you need. Even the Circle K up to the strip a little does not have things like laundry detergent. The fresh sandwiches and breakfast are also pretty solid. It's not going to blow you away, but it will satisfy you in a pinch. Baked goods are not brought in daily for my experience. This is typical for an island.
google avatar

Blake G.

Yelp
This was my third time to Folly and I have to admit that the sandwiches are a hidden gem in this beach town. My favourite is their Italian sub. Along with the deli, this place has all the staples you need.

Kari W.

Yelp
Food so good. Service super good. and there is ice cream the best place always had ice cream. Ambiance good.
google avatar

Zac S.

Yelp
It's a beach market, so the prices are kinda crazy, but beyond that it's a great place to grab most anything you need + a yummy grill, deli and ice cream. Over the course of our stay, we got the bagel, egg, turkey bacon and cheese sandwich - it was pretty good. Much better once we got a side of their fresh yummy salsa. Later, we also got the Southwest wrap and it hit the spot. The breakfast burrito is also good! I'd say that was the best of all 3.
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
I just spent $45 on two packs of smokes and three pieces of pie. Best money spent this week highly recommend Mississippi mud, caramel cheesecake, and key lime
google avatar

Shamila P.

Yelp
It a affordable convenient store in Folly with some great simple breakfast sandwiches . My husband and I do hit the beach early to one- avoid traffic and the crowd. Two to ensure our dog gets a good walk ( summer time puppies can only be there till 10) and 3) waters are much calmer in the morning for my husband to SUP surf. This is a good spot that is super affordable and open early for a simple breakfast also if you forgot something during your holiday travel that you think you might need this is your spot.
google avatar

Curtis M.

Yelp
When I think of a sandwich shop this is exactly what I'm looking for. The ability to call ahead and pickup was a nice perk. Their pricing for the quality and speed cannot be matched in Folly.
google avatar

Shelby J.

Yelp
This is located right in Folly Beach and they have everything from food, candles, wine, housewares, groceries you name it. A very friendly atmosphere full of southern hospitality. And there's free complimentary coffee!
google avatar

Eddy H.

Yelp
Apparently this is the only market on the island. It is clearly unique and a real Folly Beach treasure. They have an incredibly diverse assortment of products as well as a Grill making burgers, sandwiches, wings and much more. They are Open 24 7 and always have customers inside. Tim, one of the associates, appears to really enjoy life, and he brightens the day of each customer who enters.

Matt H.

Yelp
Fun, eclectic, 24-hour grocery store, eatery, and souvenir shop. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. We got ice-cream to go and it was amazing.
google avatar

Peter H.

Yelp
This place is amazing, crazy hippie vibe, large selection of the stuff you want plus stuff you didn't know you wanted but now have. It's almost a destination unto its self. Oh yea and free coffee!
google avatar

Katherine A.

Yelp
Bert's is quite an experience. The motto for this small town local grocer is "we don't close, we just doze." They are open 24 hours carrying most grocery needs. They also carry prepared foods such as roasted chickens, sandwiches and some amazing-looking single serving deserts. The locals say the foods are great. The clerk was super friendly and helpful. They look like they hustle all day, serving the beach crowd. We picked up shampoo and conditioner. Prices are on the high end, but you are paying for convenience of beach shopping from an independent.
google avatar

Misty R.

Yelp
Nice market, has all you need. I was surprised to find a market, but I'm glad I did. It had everything I was looking for. I found fresh pastries I couldn't resist. There is also a fresh sandwich section. I did not try any sandwiches, but maybe next time. Stop in, I am sure Bert's has what you need.
google avatar

Liz G.

Yelp
Berts is a staple on Folly. Been coming since before Berts when it was Tom and Jerrys. I bought candy then and booze now. It is quite a different atmosphere in the winter but still a great spot to go when on Folly. I got a couple sandwiches from the Wooden Spoon the other day and they really were nothing to write home about. I think they do better under pressure when there's a line out the door. i understand basil might not be in season but basil flakes in place of basil just didn't cut it on the panini. The cheese was pretty boring too. Guess I'm not suited for a vegan Sammy. Oh well, hopefully next time is better!
google avatar

Joey H.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. Grocery store is great but the food options are even better. Great for those that have kids and don't want to take them to a restaurant for every meal. Can get a cheap hot dog, corn dog, burger, fries, mozzarella sticks, etc. visited multiple times during our trip.

Dana C.

Yelp
After going to the pier for sunrise, we stopped by Bert's for breakfast. Our original plan was to get dairy free milk (which they have) and take it back for cereal... then we saw the fresh made bagel breakfast sandwiches! We both got the egg, turkey bacon, and cheese bagel. My spouse ordered theirs without cheese, and we didn't realize until we were back to our place that it had cheese. They ate it anyway and didn't seem to have a bad reaction to it. They were also stoked to see the boiled peanuts, so we grabbed some snacks while we waited for our sandwiches to be made. The cashier, cooks, and other staff were super friendly. The store isn't super fancy; however, there is a decent selection of groceries and fresh food--including vegan items. Let's not forget the free coffee!
google avatar

. ..

Yelp
Really liked the vibe of this place. It's a block away or so off the main road into Folly Beach, so it was super convenient to get regular provisions and snacks. I was a bit tired of the fried southern food offerings from neighboring restaurants, so picked up a sandwich from here for lunch, which was great!

Yelp
Bert's IS Folly Beach. Every reason that you love Folly will be the same reasons that you love Bert's. Come as you are. Located right off the strip...but not too far. 24 hours. Anything you could possibly need (or want) at the beach, both ready-made and to order food, and a staff who are simultaneously overwhelmed AND friendly. How can a beach general store be so small and STILL have everything that you need? We go to Bert's almost every time we go to Folly. Odd ends, lotion, sandwiches, and [wink] booze. This last weekend, we tried the whole pressed roast beef ranchero sandwich. Very tasty. Our only complaint is that we wanted more. The best thing about Bert's is that you can be in there for 3 minutes or 30 minutes and feel like a Folly local. In fact, you'll see many of the same locals there, weekend after weekend, just hanging out. Grab a dog (or three), a sixer, and some chips. Roll back to the beach for the next few hours. Then, swing by Bert's for some more sunscreen, water, and anything you may need for the evening. They have it. We love you, Bert. Thank you for adding so much convenience and joy to our beach weekends!
google avatar

Milly K.

Yelp
I just had the best Buffalo chicken wrap of my life. If you like it saucy with crunchy chicken and chunky blue cheese, you gotta try it. This place has everything you could need for a beach vacation. Snacks, drinks, beers, sunscreen, and more. Staff is always friendly, 10/10.
google avatar

Becky C.

Yelp
Super torn on this one! The crew wants to go with a 2.5 but.... Whole #s only :) PROS: the selection is GREAT, not only do they have an awesome variety of beach snacks, they have a great selection of fresh and healthy options as well (also organic). They carry a lot of foods you would find at Marlene's or Whole Foods. They have a great hot bar, sammy selection and ice cream! You can get fresh homemade sweet tea, boiled peanuts, fried foods, etc. CONS: they are severely understaffed so the line can get incredibly LONGGGGGGGGGG!!!! Like frustratingly long. Like.... just way too long! So ya, unfortunately our rating is based on a lot of this problem. The staff is hit or miss as well. Most of the crew seems sweet, but some seem out to lunch and not helpful. Either way it is the only real grocery on the island (well without having to drive a car and then get stuck in the insane traffic), so just make sure you're not in a rush when you go here!
google avatar

Haley S.

Yelp
Great vibes, good sandwiches, and nice staff. This is our favorite spot to grab a post surf snack. I'm a big fan of the Italian Sub and cheesecake.
google avatar

Lori L.

Yelp
This is a staple! You must come here when you are at FB. They have lots of snacks and food as well. They are famous for their hot dogs. You basically get a hot dog and fill it up with the toppings of your choice for not even $1. You seriously can't beat that. Plus, they have late night hours. We also came here and got breakfast to go one morning and it was pretty good! I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Kayla R.

Yelp
We loved loved Berts market - it's open 24 hours and has breakfast, sandwiches, salads and tons of great desserts. We went there every day on our trip because they had everything and we just loved it there. One night there was even a guy playing a piano. Ever folly visit should include a stop at Bert's!
google avatar

Jodie M.

Yelp
Cute little island store. Everything is just very expensive for the convenience. 3 - 6 packs of craft beer = $53. You read that right. I about died.
google avatar

Susan H.

Yelp
One of my favorite places anywhere! Charleston is my second home, where all my family resides, and is very dear to my heart. My dad introduced this gem to me about a decade ago and I get the same elated feelings each time I walk through their doors. And truly, that's all you gotta do to see how cool this place is. We go to Folly beach on the reg for sharks teeth hunting. Before doing so though, we ALWAYS get our grub on at Bert's deli (the Wooden Spoon). I can't stop ordering the veggie melt panini, I love it so much. I did recently try the roast beef panini and that was a serious score too. This place has it all, killer food, snacks galore, drinks, brews, souvenirs, you name it! And shoot, their tag line is "we may doze, but never close", 24/365 days a year they are there for ya. Simply THE coolest spot.
google avatar

Molly B.

Yelp
BERT's is the GOAT. Always. They got the best sandwiches whether is 11am or 1am. Great beer selection and the staff are always friendly! Perfect little beach town market.
google avatar

Doug G.

Yelp
Ah, Bert's...what can I say that will do this little eccentric, eclectic, down-to-earth, friendly, cool little jack of all trades beach shop justice? To be honest, I will give you some highlights, but you really have to experience Bert's yourself to soak in all its glory! We wondered into Bert's after a night at the nearby Taco Boy, as we needed some more booze and apparently cookies for the house. What we left with was the needed beer and cookies, along with a koozie, some cheese, a scoop of ice cream, sunscreen, a hamburger and a variety of chips. We paid the premium for all these things and we would happily do it again! Bert's isn't your average little market/store, I meant they do carry all the essentials one would need on a beach trip, but they also have a few things that make them different such as a cook to order spot called the Wooden Spoon right beside the register where you can get a variety of things from sandwiches to wraps to burritos, as well as a wide selection of artisan cheeses along with an olive bar, and you can get freshly scooped ice cream and desserts! This place has it all, even individually sold Solo cups. Overall, Bert's was a cool spot, one that has a real Folly vibe to it! While there are no grocery stores on the island, Bert's is a stand out for what you need unless you really want to trek it over the bridge to Harris Teeter. Again, be prepared to pay a little more for the convenience of Bert's, but don't get them confused as a convenience store...because that they are not!
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Heading to a beautiful but tiny beach town, I wasn't expecting to find anything like Bert's. A lot of folks would just phone it in when they're literally the only show in town but not Bert's. They've got quite literally anything you can think of AND they stock quality products to boot. On the food side there are lots of locally made goodies, delicious prepared foods, sandwiches and even sushi! We found this amazing Bloody Mary mix and must've gone through a case during the week. They also have a ton of wine, beer, and other dry goods too. Literally anything you could possibly need. Staff is friendly and the place has a real great vibe too. Roll up, walk up, drive or whatever. Shirt and shoes are most likely required! Open 24/7 365.
google avatar

Tim A.

Yelp
Only place on Folly open 24/7. Pricey groceries and wine/beer but supply and demand...no other place on Folly that sells beer/wine.
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
Best burgers in folly island. Do yourself a favor and stop by this 24 hr market!!!!!

Zack H.

Yelp
You'd be best served verifying that your sandwiches actually the sandwich that you asked for it's a little clueless and lost and it takes 30 minutes for them to make a sandwich. Not great I'm never going back.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
A 24/7 convenience store with smoothies, snacks, booze, and sandwiches! A great locals spot for everything you could need at Folly. 10/10 forever!
google avatar

George Brock S.

Yelp
I love this place. Everyone who stays at a house on the island goes there, or should. The coffee is good, the ice cream has an overpriced but good selection, and you can find just about anything you need to enjoy, clean, or fix your beach rental. Staff is laid-back and friendly. They seem overly casual, maybe, but actually run a tight operation. The food is generally good, what I've sampled. Breakfast bagels, lunch sandwiches, canned beer, t-shirts and laundry detergent. Whatever you need, you need Bert's.

Teresa S.

Yelp
Right off the beach, Bert's made it easy to get a yummy sandwich and drink when we needed it!!

Madison R.

Yelp
Rude and extremely slow staff. It took me 30+ mins to get a wrap when it was not even busy.
google avatar

Holden M.

Yelp
It's Folly's grocery. Good sandwiches. Open 24/7. Complementary coffee. Somehow they've packed a pretty diverse selection of items in those few racks and coolers that make up the store. I'm partial to the readymade bbq sandwiches for like $2.50 lol. Clothes optional? Maybe there's a rule but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't. It's Bert's. It's the best!
google avatar

Leah M.

Yelp
If you're looking for a little store that carries the miscellaneous things you forgot to pack, pick up at the grocery, and so much more... this is your place. It's located in close proximity to everything and it has private parking which is a true commodity here. Currently, they're only admitting a certain amount of people into the store (COVID) but there is a screen that will let you know when you can enter. Masks are required too. Inside you'll find hand dipped ice cream, various toiletries and foodstuff, a deli counter, and souvenirs. I definitely would recommend this place!

Nicholas W.

Yelp
Italian sub was amazing! Stopped in after hitting folly, ordered food to go. Was a great sammie after the beach!
google avatar

Jane M.

Yelp
The absolute cutest little shop. It's so convenient to the beach and rental homes. They have chilled water bottles for $1, which was surprising compared to other beach shops that insanely inflate prices for things you may need. This place also has anything you could possibly need. We got wine, vinegar, cat food, cheesecake and fresh breakfast sandwiches - so convenient.
google avatar

Crystal S.

Yelp
The staff is very friendly. They often apologize if you have to wait for something to be made. The sandwiches don't take long to make and are worth the wait. It's a busy store, please be nice to the staff! If you need it, this store most likely has it.
