Berwick Lodge | Best places to stay in Bristol

"Play Lord or Lady of the Manor at Berwick Lodge, a sumptuous gothic mansion that’s tucked away in the Somerset countryside – but with the bright lights of Bristol on the doorstep. If you like pared down and modern, this hotel is not for you – Berwick is all about more-is-more luxury with a Turkish twist. Each of the 14 rooms is named after an ancient Anatolian civilization. Tiled bathrooms come complete with claw-footed bathtubs and statues of nymphs. Sitting rooms are similarly plush, and the gorgeous in-house Hattusa restaurant (all cream hues and chandeliers) serves AA Rosette-awarded food without feeling stuffy. While there’s no spa, in-room treatments can be arranged. " - Sian Lewis

Stayed in Zeguma for two nights to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. The room was very cosy and full of character, with a lovely balcony overlooking the side garden. We were lucky on our first day to see both deer and house martins.||The room is stocked with tea, coffee, and Bramley toiletries. My only gripe is that there’s no dressing table or mirror near a plug socket. We had to take the mirror off the wall and balance it on the sofa to use the extension lead by the coffee machine.||The food was amazing, with a good choice for both breakfast and dinner. We opted for the taster menu on our wedding anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed it.||The grounds are fab, with a lovely outdoor area with tables and chairs; we enjoyed a drink here before dinner. ||We didn’t partake, but the afternoon tea appeared to be very popular.||We loved our stay here. The room is a little tired in a few places, but I think this is reflected in the price. Overall, we found it to be an excellent break to celebrate our special day and great value for money.||All the staff were amazing and certainly one of the main reasons we would return. Sarah, the owner, was also present much of the time. ||We would definitely love to return.

Attracted by the EV charging and 2 rosette food we booked a night through Secret Escapes. Straight away we were very impressed by the warm and professional welcome at reception who sorted out our car charging and dealt with our luggage whilst we had afternoon tea. The standard of service remained very high throughout our stay all staff being first rate. Both afternoon tea and dinner were very good. |Our room was Ionian in the top floor. It had a very large bathroom including a bidet, which was nice, and small balcony with views over to Avonmouth to the Bristol Channel. Being in the roofspace there was a certain amount of ducking involved in moving around. The bed was huge and comfortable. Overall we were very happy with the room. |The hotel had many of the original Victorian features including a lovely staircase with a stained glass dome on the top floor. The decor and furniture were very individual, not generic hotel decor, which was fun. Recommended for a stopover from motorway driving or as an edge of city bolt hole for a short stay.

We stayed in Karia for three nights. We used some Virgin Experience vouchers as part payment, given to us to celebrate our 55th anniversary and my 75th birthday this year, so we wanted something special. Just what we got; special memories were made.||From the moment we were welcomed, everything was just perfect. Sarah the owner is a hands-on manager who really knows her business, ensuring she personally has happy quests. A charming lady. We are fortunate to travel a lot in our retirement both in the UK and abroad – we have plenty of experience of 5-star hospitality. ||We ate in the restaurant each evening and for breakfast – exemplary food, service and ambiance. Top class wine, drinks and cocktails were served to us as requested, whether in the hotel or out in the grounds.||Our room had charm, serviced perfectly. The whole hotel is beautiful.||We don’t return to places, as we seek out new experiences, however we recommend Berwick Lodge whole heartedly.||Thank you to Sarah and her teams of staff.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at this lovely hotel. We had the Karia room on the first floor, with lift access. The room was excellent, big bay window with window seat together with armchairs and a coffee table. Huge sleigh bed, importantly very comfortable. Slept very well on both nights. Ensuite was walk in shower which was perfect for us. We had the 6 course tasting menu in the excellent restaurant on our first night. It was really very good. We appreciated having alcohol free wine available for us. We ate a la carte on our 2nd night which was also very good with choices from both a la carte and brasserie menus. The breakfast was also superb, especially lovely were the eggs royale! ||All the staff were lovely, friendly, helpful and accommodating. We had a problem arriving on the day of our original booking and we were so grateful to be allowed to move our dates at such short notice. That is real customer service.

Had the most wonderful stay with my daughter. She loves Bristol but I was looking for something a little more exclusive, found this gem! Within a stones throw of Bristol easy to get to but feels like you are in the middle of the countryside. Bedroom and bathroom absolutely stunning with lovely little touches. The meals were just beautiful and our waiter Ben was so attentive and lovely as were all the team. The gardens were so calming and tranquil and so well loved. I would absolutely come back in a heart beat, loved our time together, thank you!

I booked the room Lydia for my parents during their visit in town last Sunday. The hotel and room was impressive and full of character. Every staff greeted us with the most friendly smile. I like to thank Simon especially for his most attentive and thoughtful service throughout dinner. My parents enjoyed every course of the tasting menu and highly recommended it. They loved the pleasant morning stroll at the garden too. Check out "The break up your journey offer" It was a really great value package. We were lucky enough to meet Sarah, the owner of the place when I picked my parents up the next day. She was very generous and kind. We can tell it takes so much love and effort in making this place so special. I wish more people would know about and visit this hidden gem in Bristol.

Absolutely blown away by our stay here! The location is amazing, with stunning grounds that made for the perfect peaceful getaway. Our room was fantastic – beautifully finished, super comfortable, and the shower/bath setup was next level. Total luxury! I’d highly recommend the ‘Troya’ suite. Incredible!! The food was absolutely delicious – every meal was a highlight – and the staff were honestly some of the best we’ve ever come across. Attentive, friendly, and genuinely couldn’t do enough for us. It really made the whole experience feel extra special. Without a doubt, this has been the best UK break my partner and I have ever had. Already looking forward to coming back! – The Brice’s 🌿✨

Lovely room. Food excellent and chef happy to adapt what was on menu for our preferences. Really wide variety of options, particularly for breakfast. Staff knowledgable about dishes and able to advise. Wish we could stay at weekends but the majority of the summer weekends seem to be reserved for weddings for which it is a perfect venue.

Yelp
Tucked away down a lane which crosses the M5 near Cribbs, before disappearing into the depths of, well, who knows where, Berwick Lodge is an imposing red-brick mansion house recently converted into a boutique hotel by visionary couple Fevzi and Sarah Arikan. The restaurant is Chris Wicks' (of Bell's Diner, Bar One30 fame) new baby - and for me, was the main draw of this rather luxurious new establishment (opened September 2009). As we stepped out of the taxi we were greeted by someone who took us into the house, arranged for our coats to be squirreled away and checked us in for dinner. We started with drinks and canapes - bread sticks, enormous olives and fried balls of risotto - in a drawing room oozing warmth and opulence, stuffed with grand oversized sofas and other awestruck dinner guests sipping bubbly. We'd have happily stayed there all night, but before long we were ushered through to the elegant dining room. The menu is full of scallops, foie gras, rabbit, seabass, pork belly and the like, with a smattering of 'textures', 'purees' and the occasional 'foam' woven in (haggis porridge features an accompaniment to one dish too), exactly as you might expect if you've ever been to Bell's Diner. To kick things off, a small glass of hot, foamy crevette bisque was brought out 'courtesy of the chef'. Bursting with flavour, it was a promising glimpse of things to come. I had rabbit followed by pork belly, and the dishes were as surprising and intriguing as they were tasty. Determined to squeeze in a pudding, I opted for 'Honeycomb 'crunchy' glass but got a chocolatey concoction with almost popping-candy style crunchy bits. Not sure if I'd misread the menu or what, but it was delicious. We retired to the drawing room for tea and coffee, feeling pleasantly full and very pleased with ourselves. As we finished up we spotted the owner, Sarah, and asked if we could have a tour of the hotel while they called us a taxi. She was happy to oblige and her excitement and pride in the place was utterly infectious as she showed off the beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms (roll-top baths and mosaics aplenty) and the amazing stained glass dome they found at a local salvage yard (you'd never have guessed it wasn't an original part of the house). My husband and I agreed that had Berwick Lodge been around when we'd been planning our wedding, we'd have been very tempted to have it there - it's a very special place. The food at Berwick Lodge is complicated and beautiful, tasty and innovative, while the staff here are friendly and attentive - you feel very looked after and unquestionably special dining here. Quite possibly heading for a Michelin star, it's the perfect choice for a birthday or anniversary but at £39.90 for dinner (or £29.90 for lunch) and wine starting at around £20 a bottle, next time we go it'll probably just be for afternoon tea (£12) - until we've had time to save up for our next full-scale Wicks fix!
