Best Doughnuts in Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"Move over Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’, regulars to this small shop in Forest Park say the doughnuts at Best Country are just that, the best doughnuts found anywhere in south metro Atlanta. Best Country offers everything from classic old-fashioned cake varieties to sticky glazed doughnuts and those covered in chocolate. Doughnuts are baked fresh daily and often run out before the shop closes at noon. Opens at 5 a.m. Closed on Sundays." - Lia Picard

I was searching for a spot that would prevent me from catching a flight to New Orleans for what I consider to be the BEST donuts on earth ! Just in case you are wondering - that spot is called Tastee Restaurant located in Kennar - highly suggest checking it out! Back to Best Country Donuts! My niece was visiting and said she wanted to check this spot out. I told her that we would need to get up at 5am and make the journey to the other side of town and beat the morning rush hour traffic! We did this on a Wednesday! It was about a 25 minute drive from where I live . When we arrived I was surprised that there were already patrons in the building! It is clear this place is loved! The gentleman that was checking out when we entered order 4 donuts and said “ I will see you in a few days!”! I love this for them! It’s nice to be loved by your customers! I wanted to try a regular glazed donut but also ordered a sour cream and a blueberry to try ! I think my total was about $5.50 or 6 bucks. I did get two glazed - one for a friend. My niece ordered a glazed and an apple fritter. When we got in the car to make the journey home my niece decided to try her glazed donut! She bit into it and said oh yessss, this is good !! I did not want to break my fast with sugar so I ended up waiting until I ate a proper breakfast prior to trying the ones I purchased. I tried the glazed first . I just cut off a small piece! First impression- ok - it’s good - but it’s not like the one I love in New Orleans. I then tried the blueberry donut! Now that one— amazing! I ended up eating the entire donut! The sour cream one did not do anything for me ! If I was in the area wanting a sweet treat I would stop by this donut shop.

This little local donut shop is a best kept secret in the greater Atlanta area. Their plain glazed donuts and kolaches are really good. This spot came recommended by a coworker so I decided to indulge, and boy was he right. The ladies working in the front get you in and out no matter how long the line may get. They provide you with friendly and swift service. Their donuts taste better than most chains.

I would’ve taken a pic, but it’s too late - twice! 🤦🏾‍♂️Thought they were just gonna be regular, but they’re good. Blueberry cake is CRAZY good! Unexpected. Maple Glazed & Original Glazed are good and buttery!

1. The glaze on the strawberry donuts slid off??!!! No excuse if you made bad glaze that day... they could have been laid flat idc it's just bad to have wet naked donuts when they are cheaper that way. 2. Inconsistent prices or display is old or something I'd. If I read 9.50 for six doughnuts then I pay $12+ I'm confused 3. I ordered six doughnuts $8.50, a twist and a croissant it was $13.44 ?!! how in the hell is that math correct ? I knew the first day something wasn't right... 4. The sandwiches were sitting in bags pre made and nuked if you wanted it to be warm. Yes it was a microwave because it was unevenly heated but at least I was able to eat it before the bread turned to stone. I'm not sure what audience they shoot for but it seems this is for people who will devour a whole half a dozen or take it to the office to share IMMEDIATELY, because I'm certain it's not for next day coffee cup enjoyment or end of day treat.... The donut glaze is wet. 5.craziest part, I raved about the strawberry donuts to the guy Behind me who the servers decided they would talk with instead of the NEXT Customer ...ME... But whatever. I still gave a compliment and left. 6. I have been coming here with my mother for years...I guess that's who would have gotten a better welcome but she died in 2016... This is not how I remembered things..The strawberry icing once upon a time had Actual 🍓 in it.... This pool of pink is just grease and sugar, I guess... Well we do know what it is anyway...but it's supposed to be crisp glaze. Donuts may as well be from Kroger deli. They were just as sticky and wet and disappointing. The service was not cheerful to me... And I went two days in a row this week. No smile was offered just stoic gimme your money for these wet donuts type of vibe. See pictures. Sad to lose another good a thing in the area. First the Mexican Bakery in Wholesale Foods Now this....

Google
The doughnuts were good and fresh. We bought plain, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry iced glazed. The service was good. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Family ownership, consistent service, open 6 days a week, good options l. Get there early or you may be faced with the sold out sign posted on the window

Yelp
Best donuts hands down! I come down all the way from Philly to visit family & this is my first stop in the morning. Can't get these back home. I crave them with a passion. I'm a glazed kinda girl. They are nice & fluffy, airy, melt in your mouth goodness! I will have to say they are better than KK. There..I said it. My mom who is an 80 y/o who is set in her ways, actually complimented the donuts & asked for them again the next morning. The place is easily missed because there are no fancy big signs. Service is fast & quick. There is only one table. Not really an eat place, mostly order & go. Get there early because they run out fast!

Yelp
Atmosphere is nice, customer service is wonderful All pastries are best! They will make whatever you want!!!

James B.

Yelp
Best chocolate covered donuts ever! Krispy Kreme is great, but these folks have the best. I've only had the chocolate covered donuts, but I'm sure the rest of the pastries are awesome. I ate six of those babies!
google avatar

Sandra Y.

Yelp
Literally the best. The donuts are so light and airy, think Krispy Kreme but bigger and fluffier. The doughnuts are so soft and fresh every time. I share these donuts with everyone I know, my friends and family have all become huge fans of this little donut shop. The pricing is reasonable and the quality of the food is amazing . The owner is humble and down to earth. Some times the place can be busy so they try to move the line quick which is not a bad thing. The place is relatively small and not much to look at aesthetically but that's what makes this little place special. It's part of the community it sits in and it's amazing pastries speak for themselves.

Jerome P.

Yelp
I worked at the Home Depot in the early 2000's. We would stop there every Saturday morning and get at least dozen. Some of the best donuts I've had since leaving Philly. No disrespect to the rest, but you must try them.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Crack doughnuts Best thing i ever put in my mouth I love them
google avatar

Yelp
This place is off the beaten path but has the best donuts I ever tasted. The taste is almost indescribable. I had a bunch of different varieties and I honestly can't pick my favorite. They taste fresh and homemade unlike Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme. I also had the breakfast croissant with ham, bacon, cheese and a fried egg. Orgasmic! I wish I could eat one every morning. The only reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars because the one cashier at the corner is not friendly at all. She will not smile and shows her annoyance in her body movements and facial expressions. She is also quick to snap at you. I'm sure getting up so early each morning is not ideal but I honestly think she is rude.

Yelp
Good doughnuts. Fluffy airy not greasy. Still wish I could get them hot (not microwaving). Still haven't got lucky.
google avatar

Philip S.

Yelp
Very good donuts. Fresh and delicious. We tried the cinnamon twist, the jalapeño sausage kolache and sugar coated yeast doughnut.. The plain donut was exceptionally. Loved the taste of the cinnamon twist.
google avatar

Timika H.

Yelp
Holy Moly Donut Shop. The floor is filthy! Who wrote them reviews?CAP! End of discussion.
google avatar

Shasta D.

Yelp
A true mom and pop type of place. I'm from Cali so I always try and find places that remind me of home! This is def a place that suits its purpose. I had the bacon egg and cheese croissant and let's just say it was made with love. I also had a chocolate donut that was good too. The two items cane up to 4.77 which is t bad bcuz I was full for a while. I will definitely be a regular at this place

Yelp
I lived near Best Country Doughnuts for well over 20 years, but have only tried it a handful of times. I often go to Krispy Kreme, Sublime Doughnuts or Revolution. Well, the doughnuts at Best Country hold their own against these heavyweights. I just tried a glazed doughnut, a typically unexciting flavor. This glazed was light, fluffy and perfectly sweetened. Think of a Krispy Kreme glazed but with more airy fluff. Fritters and Sour Cream doughnuts are great as well. My only complaint- the hours. I would like to see longer hours and more doughnuts on display after 10am. If they closed at 8 pm I would probably get more doughnuts there (and gain more weight). Bottom line- great doughnuts and an actual good place to eat on the southside.

Yelp
Delicious donuts, among the best I've had in Atlanta Metro. Def get there early before they sell out for the day.
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
their phone number has changed! (404)228-2880 best donuts and croissants ever!! opens early and you can never go wrong with the donut holes!
google avatar

Samadia S.

Yelp
The Best doughnuts I've ever had in my life! I'm a convert from Krispy Kreme, who's a picky eater'
google avatar

Kammarah P.

Yelp
These are the best donuts I've had....seriously they are 5 star worthy but when you factor in the wait time, the line length, the lack of staff to help when it's busy, and you literally have to be there when they open if you want good variety it becomes a 2 star at best. It's Jan 2...most people aren't working so it's not busy. There were 2 ladies were at the counter when I walked in at 6:55 and I was excited to see everything except bar donuts were available. After waiting 10 minutes while the ladies nitpicked and hemmed and hawed I asked if someone could come out and assist me. No one did so I left.
google avatar

John Y.

Yelp
Amazing fresh donuts, get there early they sell out, family owned local business, coffee and breakfast sandwiches too
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Best donuts I've ever had in my life!! Took some to work recently and everyone was raving on how great they are. Run don't walk!!
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
i didn"t think there were better donuts than krispy cream,i was wrong.best donuts i every had
google avatar

Zakia A.

Yelp
Best Country Donuts have some really great donuts but you have to get there early! I went at 9am on a Saturday morning and got the last 2 chocolate glazed! We got two dozen donuts, some donut holes and a breakfast sandwich and I think the total was around $22! The donut places in town charge way more and their product doesn't compare. I will definitely be headed back but we'll before 9.
google avatar

Kris A.

Yelp
Open early, great customer service and the donuts are some of the best I've had in Atlanta.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
Baby these donuts give Krispy Kreme a run for the money. They are amazingly delicious. I was told they are similar to how donuts are made in Cali. All I know is this place is busy and can't keep donuts. So get there very early for the best options. From my understanding they serve breakfast as well. I will try that another time.
google avatar

Marlene H.

Yelp
These were the best donuts and the freshest tasting coffee I've ever had in a cafe. It was a Saturday morning and the customers that I watched come in got theirs to go. There are a couple of tables so my friend and I sat at one and chatted while watching the tv on the wall until our donuts and coffee were all gone. A coworker came in and gave us a big smile and a hug. We couldn't resist orderisome donuts to go and the owner was nice enough to give us the rest of the coffee because it was closing time. She and her family had been patiently waiting for us to leave.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Love their donuts!! Always get the chocolate on chocolate with sprinkles Their croissants are good too!
google avatar

Nathasja T.

Yelp
I had to drop off a box of donuts to some customers so I asked the local coffee shop barista where to go. Buddy told me about this little place, and after a suuuper quick Yelp check we hopped in the car and came over. Well, this is definitely a hole in the wall. A little dingy, a whole lot of dated and run by one gentleman with limited hours. These type of places really only go two ways; fantastic or total flop. I'll let you guess which camp I think it falls in. Our friend is a bit of a donut connoisseur and he said that the glazed donut we just got him was the best glazed donut he has ever had! I very much enjoyed my maple glazed donut as well; it was super fresh, the yeast donut was soft and airy and the glaze was adequately thick. If I am going to splurge on something sweet, that glaze better be gooey and thick when I bite into it; none of that flaky thin-glaze-layer nonsense..no thank you! Fun fact, when we dropped off the box of donuts the guys told me it was the best donuts place in town; they were very familiar with this little hole in the wall.. and I am pretty sure I scored some vendor brownie points by bringing these. Or should I say donut points?!
google avatar

Trey L.

Yelp
If your from Houston you know what Shipleys is and this place reminds me of Shipleys. The yeast donuts are really good but my favorite is the maple cake or glazed cake. They give you a few donuts holes if you buy a dozen. Just really good old fashioned donuts.
google avatar

Nia A.

Yelp
Someone from work brought in Cinnamon Twists and Rolls from this place yesterday morning. It was the most delicious donut that I have had in years! I'm sitting at my desk this morning, angry that I don't have a Cinnamon Twist. I will definitely visit this place ASAP, in order to get the full experience and try other donuts.

Ashley C.

Yelp
The donuts was good . It tasted like this spot called rays back home in Chicago . I grabbed a coffee I wish they had different options of creamers . The crossiant was delicious.
google avatar

Mick D.

Yelp
I don't know why I stopped here. I mean, I'm never in this part of town. Rarely ever have any reason to drive this far down Jonesboro Rd. But today I was following the whims of my GPS, and well, I still don't know why I stopped here. Must have been the will of the giant Global Positioning Units in the sky. Why on Earth would I otherwise decided I needed to make a pit stop at a hole-in-the-wall donut shop in the middle of why-am-I-in-Forest-Park? It must've been providence. You need to go to this place. I could go nuts here, but I managed to show some restraint. No, the Swedish Bikini team was not in attendance. But the apple fritter was fantastic. It was actually a little (unexpectedly) crisp in places. Even as I type this, my mouth waters. I must (eventually) have another. Apparently these folks do breakfast and a few other donut-related savory things. I'll have to figure out when I'm going back. Holler if you're coming with.
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
So I finally had some donuts from this "Famous" Forest Park location. They are pretty good! The Glazed was my favorite. Then the Chocolate Iced topped with Peanuts came in next followed closely by the Chocolate Iced topped with Coconut. They are not as light as a Krispie Kreme donut nor as sweet. They are much thicker and bigger in size. Everyone loved them at my office today. Thanks Bev for buying two dozen. Not one complaint about them from a group of about 20 people. I am pleased to find a good donut spot in the area where I don't have to figure out if the HOT LIGHT is on!
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
Love this spot. Old traditional good fashioned donuts! Can't go wrong at this spot! All the locals love it. It's affordable and great. Reminds me of a place you would stop with your dad or grandfather.
google avatar

Trish L.

Yelp
Don't let the outside fool you. I've lived in the area for more than 15 years, and today was my first time trying this place out. I always thought that it was just an empty space. The donuts were absolutely amazing. They were soft and fresh with just the right amount of sweetness. I brought a dozen for my coworkers, and it was a hit in the office. You can actually smell how good they are as soon as you open the box. I paid less than 9 dollars for an assortment of delicious donuts. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Whitney H.

Yelp
Literally the best egg and cheese croissant sandwich I've EVER HAD!!! The sour cream glazed and regular glazed donuts were so good they both just melt in you mouth.
google avatar

Henry H.

Yelp
What can you say if the donuts are gone by 9:30... umm it's awesome donuts. Get here early or else. Super pillowy glazed. Maple that almost tastes smoked. Easy access to freeway.
google avatar

Ask E.

Yelp
These are absolutely the best donuts on the South Side of Atlanta. I'm from Los Angeles and these are the donuts that are California made!!! They were so good, I knew the owners had to be from California, and they confirmed it! If I could eat these everyday I would! Krispy Creme has NOTHING on these. I wish they were open 24 hours lol
google avatar

Mishi H.

Yelp
Learned about this spot and I have been back several times already. I get their original glazed donut and a cup of hot coffee - for less than $3? Can't beat that while supporting a local business.
google avatar

Kenui I.

Yelp
When i tell y'all the best while in the Wall donut shop in the southside ! We nicknamed these Jesus pillows at my job ! I love the sour cream but you have to get there fast and early (before 11am) because they sell out fast !!!!! Never had a bad experience and the owners are friendly !
google avatar

Laura T.

Yelp
I heard that these were the best donuts on the south side, and they were worth the 20 min drive. They are baked fresh every morning, so when they are out...they are out. Hole in the wall restaurant, with melt in your mouth donuts
google avatar

Rasmey H.

Yelp
Best donut in town! A must if you're in the Atlanta area. It's made fresh everything day and sell out pretty quick. Come early!!
google avatar

Madison S.

Yelp
Wow their apple fritters were AMAZING! I came in late today at 12pm so didn't have much to chose from but I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Lindsey M.

Yelp
Everything here is delicious. Best apple fritter I've ever had and the sausage wrapped things (not sure the name) are better than any fast food breakfast item. Will make my Saturday tradition.
google avatar

Erik L.

Yelp
I am a tortured man. Seriously when your lifestyle hetero partner decides she wants donuts I'm in for hell. Why? Well apparently donuts in California are all made by magical Asians and they can be replicated nowhere else on Earth. Her donut life is one disappointment after another on the quest for buttermilk bars. Anywho one day I was tasked with getting her donuts. Luckily the place I went to that does a thriving business making d@^* cakes for bachelorette parties was closed. Fired up Yelp and saw this place 3 miles away. So I said what the heck. It's in a run down building so that was promising. It had an Asian owner, doubly promising. Checked the case and saw no buttermilk bars. On a whim I asked, since no none ever knows what I'm talking about I was surprised when he said "yeah used to make them but no one wanted them". While no buttermilk bar it was still nice to hear he could make them. What did I get and what the hell is the point of this review since the thing you went for wasn't there. Excellent question intrepid reader. Apple Fritters! Divine the best darn apple fritter available in the South Fulton area. You really need to give these a try. The cinnamon rolls were stellar too, but the fritter. OMG the fritter I'll kill for it. So wisenheimer why the 4 stars instead of 5. I'm withholding a star to convince them to make buttermilk bars again. Yeah I am flat out using Yelp for consumer terrorism. What are you going to do about it?

Nneena A.

Yelp
Some of the best donuts I've tasted ! Their Glaze is my favorite. I usually get there when they open so I never have a problem with lines and long wait times like some mentioned in the previous post.

Yelp
I love their donuts~~~ I came here on the last day of my rotations. I regret not having come at the beginning of my 2 weeks down in FP so I can eat as much donuts as I can until I vomit at the sight or smell of another. It says California donuts. The locals around the area say the donuts taste different. I couldn't tell, but then again, I am from California so this is how I'm used to having donuts taste. I'm not the biggest donut fan but for some reason, just cuz I can't get these "CA style donuts" around my neck of the woods, I want it more. I'm seriously contemplating driving down there just to buy me some donut holes and apple fritters. The apple fritters are rather crispy and just perfect..... Thinking about them is making me drool. MmmMMmmm. Tastes just like donuts back at home. I will have to get me some tomorrow.....using the ATL farmer's market as an excuse to visit FP. =)
google avatar

Fatgyrl B.

Yelp
I'm pissed because damn near EVER time I go to this place their All OUT OF DOUGHNUTS How the hell is that possible?? 8am 9am y'all already out! Wasting my damn time & gas! Isn't this a coffee and doughnut shop? And the close early after the sold out for the day! That's not good business for ur loyal customers!
google avatar

Robyn T.

Yelp
It's my favorite donut! The glaze donuts are the best I've ever had. Everything is made fresh daily and if you don't go early you'll be missing out. It's worth the drive down to Jonesboro. :)

Lorna E.

Yelp
Ok.. After reading the Yelp reviews and passing this place everyday for 15 years, I decided a breakfast croissant with bacon and egg, and a glazed donut. yes, the croissant was delectable, and the doughnut equally. I did have my hubby go there as to try not to fall in love. I am glad I didn't go because both selections were delicious. The doughnut was pillows of soft dough, dipped in a crispy glaze. The croissant was delicious as well. This is another hidden gem in what is becoming a good mix of culinary delights.
google avatar

Shon S.

Yelp
Real donuts baked with love and absolutely delicious. You'll forget dunkin and krispy crap, guaranteed.
