Beta's Carnitas & Guisados is a Mexican eatery, squeezed into a slender cozy space on Clinton Street. the space is deceptively small, but there is a bright seating area in the back if you decide to dine there. the vibe is casual, upbeat, and friendly. the menu is concise with the focus being on guisados. these braised slow-cooked stews of sorts fill the entrance area with a delicious aroma as you walk in...not over-powering, but enough of a savory scent to tell you that you made the right choice by walking in. there are a variety of guisados from the carnitas to a couple chicken ones to a chicharron en salsa and a chambarete morita (beef)…which are all served in tacos, respectively. there is also carnitas torta option, which is what i ordered. the torta is filled with a generous helping of carnitas; pickled onions; and thin avocado slices sandwiched between a sliced toasted buttered bolilos (a soft crusty Mexican roll) from Don Perreas--may have missed a sandwich ingredient or two. the torta is a feast for the senses from smell to sight to touch to taste...the carnitas is a mix of seasoned tender pieces of pork that has the right amount of savory protein-ness and fattiness topped with the crunchiness of chicharrones. the avocados adds another kinda layer of richness by way of smooth creaminess—green gold, indeed. the pickled onions gives a tangy bright flavor to cut through all the richness of the meats and avocado. while the carnitas is the star of the sandwich, the bread is so good—soft and airy insides with a crust that is firm like you'd expect in a roll. hat tip to the bread for also soaking up the flavors and still holding the sandwich all together. the favors and textures come together complement one another in each bite. the sandwich has the right amount of messiness without being messy that needs a lid of napkins…meaning this sandwich is meant to be eaten casually with your hands as it is not pretentious. this torta is what comfort food should be: full of flavorful savory calories with soul. spoke with the owner-operator or one of them...very approachable and friendly as i had some q's about some of the menu items. got the answers i needed which guided me to the torta and that worked out well! Beta's Carnitas & Guisados just opened, but already is a wonderful addition to the eatery-filled blocks of Clinton Street. look forward to trying the tacos here at some point, but don't sleep on its torta...it is excellent--for real!
