The Best Restaurants and Bars in Hood River, Oregon | Eater Portland

"First opened in 1975, Bette’s Place is a Hood River institution — the classic small-town diner is always packed with regulars and serves a massive breakfast and lunch menu that runs the gamut from huevos rancheros to good, old-fashioned club sandwiches. Portions are huge, with Frisbee-sized cinnamon rolls and a fantastic baked goods selection that features award-winning house-made pies filled with local fruit like marionberry and cherry. It’s also known as the “friendliest restaurant in town,” so expect a cheery, charming reception paired with a cup of coffee." - Molly Allen

The feel of a diner with homemade deliciousness in every bite. We had sandwiches off the lunch menu: turkey-avocado on croissant and grilled avocado, cheese, and tomato on sourdough... each with a salad. The sandwiches were tasty and the salads fresh and yummy with a good selection of dressings. Then, to top everything off, we had a piece of still hot from the oven Marion berry pie. The crust was flaky and delicious (which is hard to find these days) and the insides filled the plate with fresh baked berry goodness. We did not have ice cream with ours, but that would have been a great addition to this already scrumptious dessert. Overall, Bette's Place exceeded our expectations with their mix old time diner charm and homemade goodness but modern recipes reflecting the variety of produce and foods available today (i.e. spring green salads, scones, new varieties of grilled sandwiches, etc). Highly recommend!

Google
Very cute diner with large menu of breakfast classics. They also had a specials board that sounded amazing. Portion sizes were huge (i could not finish my omelet) and their fruit assortment was very fresh and ripe. Coffee is strong and wakes you right up. Service was great! Will definitely be back next time im in Hood River

Google
Great breakfast spot with a nice view, located right in the heart of downtown. We found street parking easily and were seated within a minute. The staff took our order quickly and service was fast throughout. We had the crab eggs Benedict and the chicken breakfast with potatoes and fruit salad—both delicious. Coffee refills were unlimited, and we were offered them countless times. They also had a variety of baked goods that seemed popular, though we didn’t try any. The place had a warm, friendly, family-like vibe, and they were celebrating their 50th location anniversary while we were there.

Google
Great breakfast find. Nice staff! We had French toast to go (you should serve real maple syrup) but other than that it was good. Biscuits and gravy yummy great biscuits and nice sausage chunky gravy Steak and eggs cooked as requested and steak wasn’t tough for being sirloin Chicken fried steak same gravy as biscuits and the steak part was good seemed like fresh not from frozen patty Cinnamon roll…wow huge and not super sweet surprisingly. Went back the next day for a Togo roll!! Oh amd fresh peach and strawberry rhubarb pies! Were tasty again not uber sweet so that was nice!!

Google
Great Dungeness crab Benedict.. the hollandaise sauce was fantastic and a good amount of crab. Would get this again. The classic American breakfast was very good too. The scrambled eggs were done perfectly and the roasted red potatoes were very tasty.

Google
Best breakfast by a landslide . We just did a 2 week tour through the US and Bettes place did not disappoint . Full plates of delicious food served up in a ribeye matter from an enthusiastic smiling team of employees. Make this a definite stop in the historic town of Hood river.

Google
The food was super delicious and the service was super fast. The portions were very well sized and we left the place feeling very full and happy. The waiter was super nice and we were able to substitute out different items to fit our dietary needs. 11/10!!

Yelp
Touted as the "Friendlest Place in Town" and..it is! We've been to HR many times and have breezes by this place because it's fairly unassuming on the outside. This trip we wanted something new and my husband looked up this place. We were worried it'd be busy, but it is deceptively spacious. You self seat. First off, we sat down and a waitress immediately said I'll be with you soon. Then she apologized for taking all of 5 minutes of a busy holiday weekend to get our drink orders. We ordered our food and it came out quick! Nice portions, yummy food and nice service. We won't miss them on our next trip back!

Yelp
This is one of the rare times I am writing about an American diner experience. Usually one would associate them with dry flavorless fare. That is until I had visited this place. Truly a quaint place with wholesome and delicious food options. I think I may have been deceived by the convenient, commercialized options. We'll now I know. I think when people say American breakfast - it should have well seasoned omelette options - fried, Benedict, omelette or may be just scrambled. Also included with side of fruits , hash browns or just potatoes. The omelettes to have different filling - isn't that capital! Bette's had all this where I could savor the unhurried hospitality and chefs skill both at same time. Quality first! You. An tell that the establishment care about the quality of food they serve. Service that immediately puts you at ease. Is this a five star rated place? No. Is this a Michelin star rated place? No. The reason I am speaking so much about this is because this is the base minimum of a restaurant. I feel that in the race of capitalism and the fast pace of life folks have forgotten what it is to be able to eat out and enjoy. What to expect from hospitality. If I could give 5 star ratings for the service and the professionalism to this establishment I would give it 10 times over. If this becomes the role model of American food experience, may be we hope to see more gastronomic choose to explore American fare. I am glad I chose to drive 5 mins to come and eat at a local breakfast place. We ordered 2 omeleetes, lemon French toast and a chorizo burrito. Normal stuff done great and with a lot of care. Taste on point. The only thing which took away from taste was the hash browns and the potatoes. Dry. Lemon French toast with mascarpone was a dream. Also everything that came out was fresh, the fruit was ripe as expected due to the local supply. The place had ample seating and was clean. There are a couple of dishes I would like to still try from their menu - the crab Benedict omelette, waffles, pies. Next time. If you are visiting Hood river I highly recommend you to go try this place. If nothing else it will help clear the dry, unappetizing opinion you might have of American food.

Yelp
We had a great breakfast at Bette's Place. Upon arriving, we were able to seat ourselves. Service was quick with us being offered drinks almost immediately. Once we were ready, our order was taken quickly. While we waited for food, we were offered a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll was huge and large enough for our three person party to share. The menu had tons of options. It was so difficult to choose because so much of it looked good. The food was delicious, portion sizes large, and the service was good. Prices are good in relation to the amount of food you get. I would visit again!

Yelp
Great Diner. I had a South of the Gorge burger and my Mom and girlfriend had South of the Gorge salads. Really large salads and you will need to take some home in a box. Friendly and attentive servers. Laid back environment. Note: open only for breakfast and lunch until 2 pm. Good news is they serve the full menu all day, and the menu is large. They also have amazing homemade cinnamon rolls and huge maple bars (we took two to go) Love this place.

Yelp
We stopped in for breakfast today. I got the country skillet which was great. My wife had the eggs Benedict which was good. Our server Gabby was so sweet and funny that made the meal fun . The restaurant is cafe style. All in all a good meal.

Yelp
This place is awesome. And though it looks small from the street there is more seating in back and in the hallway. The waitress was so nice and I LOVE they bring the food out as it is ready so that everyone's is fresh. Also love I got the @1 whivh is breakfast for lunch AND I got the Gluten-free biscuits with it, there were 2 huge biscuits. And they were so yummy, a touch if cinnamon. We would totally come back.

Dana B.

Yelp
Had an enjoyable breakfast here. Great staff. Very flexible with our order. Lots of food. Awesome place!! Hotel recommended this one and Egg River Cafe. No comparison! Drive to this one every time!!

Yelp
I was coming into town for my wedding and could NOT find a place to host brunch for about 30-35 guests the day after our wedding. I reached out to (no joke) 20 or so places, and mostly was ignored or denied. Then I found Bette's! I submitted a form on their website to inquire about my group and got in contact with Sheri. She calmed my nerves and basically said "no worries - we'll make it happen!" My guests were thrilled with the food, the service was top notch, the cinnamon rolls were delicious, and I am forever grateful for Sheri and her crew just making it work. The eggs benedict were cooked to perfection and after a stressful week - I was looking forward to it so much and being able to just relax with friends and family was so great. Thank you so much!

Yelp
Every time we go to Hood River going to Bette's is a must!! Their crab Benedict is filled with so much fresh crab, a hollandaise sauce that is smooth and bright (and does not separate!!) along with crispy delicious hash browns (or fresh fruit or the delicious fried red potatoes) !! The biscuits and gravy has mounds of flavorful sausage gravy over 2 inch high biscuits! I can also suggest Betty's burrito filled with all of your favorite eggs, sausage cheese, hashbrowns, and topped inside with gravy! We always get the cinnamon roll to go, which is why I forgot to snap a photo Because by the time you're done with breakfast, there is no room, but you cannot go to Bette's without getting a cinnamon roll ! The place is a neighborhood community favorite so you're surrounded by Tourist but also the locals and you just find a table and seat yourself. The servers are always great and you cannot go wrong with portion sizes!! Love ya Bette's! See ya next time we are in town

Yelp
Delicious food and wonderful servers. The atmosphere was a delight. I enjoy one of a kind places like this.I hope to return in the future

Yelp
Definitely stop here for a huge delicious breakfast when you are visiting Hood River. The biscuits and gravy are amazing and can easily be shared with 2-3 people. The servings are huge. The service is great.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
As usual, the food and service at Bette's were excellent. We always make a beeline here when we are in Hood River. Everything was delicious!
google avatar

Chad F.

Yelp
This is my all time favorite breakfast place. The best service, the best food and the quickest delivery of our food. They will make any substitution and its not a problem. We have went in with the mall being so full you think you'll never get in. But take my word, it was like 10 to 15 min and the food so quick it made up for any time waiting. The staff are all friendly and sweet.
google avatar

Mark Ghee Lord G.

Yelp
The chicken fried steak and fish n chips were so well made! Props to the cooks in the kitchen! The service was great too! We got the cinnamon role to go and it was huge
google avatar

Nadia C.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Good atmosphere. Bette's Place is a must while in Hood River!
google avatar

Bob C.

Yelp
The crab omelet was exceptional and worth it. The Atmosphere was great but a little noisy. The service was excellent. Ate here twice for breakfast and will definitely return next year while in town.
google avatar

Kristin R.

Yelp
Superb. What a local gem we stumbled upon. Everything was fantastic from the service to the food. The place was packed (and we fully understand why, it's delicious). Generous portions. I think most of the food is home creations and from scratch. Superb little spot. If we're headed thorough, we would definitely come back to try something new. Lots of locals in the spot, friendly atmosphere, knowledgeable staff to tell you about the dishes. Gluten-free options galore, if you needed it.
google avatar

Kyllie N.

Yelp
Great food and great service! The restaurant was pretty big and can fit big parties. Would definitely come back if I'm ever in hood river again!
google avatar

Yelp
I love that you can seat yourself. The booths are super cushy, with big windows that look out at the delightful Main Street passers by. Everything is kept very clean and organized. You can even see the plating chef in the back constantly cleaning up after each dish. Service was very fast and friendly. They use tablets, so the order is instantly transmitted to the kitchen, and food comes out quickly. The all day breakfast menu is comprehensive. Tables were cleared quickly and water refilled often. I had the number six special, but with hashbrowns instead of meat. The eggs were perfectly scrambled and the hashbrowns were nicely crisped. The pancakes were absolute perfection, with both maple and berry syrup and a big dollop of butter. My wife had the egg sandwich that she loved. Portions are large. We took off a star because we had their cherry pie for dessert, and besides being the color of cherries, it had absolutely no redeeming qualities. A bland and gooey crust, with vanilla looking but not tasting ice cream.

Julie M.

Yelp
Was seated quickly. Service was amazing. Food delivered quickly and very fresh and hot! Portions are big enough to share but they taste so good you might not want to. Haven't had this good of breakfast out in a very long time!! Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Natalie H.

Yelp
Wonderful breakfast spot in Hood River! The servings are hearty and so delicious. I can't believe I failed to take a picture of it, but you MUST get a maple bar from here! They are bready in the best way and extra delicious when they are freshly warmed. My friend said it was the best maple bar she has ever had! Someone I know had told me I needed to try one when visiting Hood River for the first time, and she was so right!!

Bill H.

Yelp
Had breakfast there, and it was really good. The Monterey Omelette (bacon, eggs & avocado) was excellent. The eggs really have a creamy taste. The Western skillet was likewise outstanding. The muffins and toast were amazing. Service was good, and prices are moderate.
google avatar

Mattias J.

Yelp
The chicken fried steak and biscuits were delicious. The service was also good. I'd happily go back anytime.
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
Delicious home cooked breakfast and offering locally baked pastries. Very friendly and hospitable staff. Quaint and lovely spot in Hood.
google avatar

Sandra M.

Yelp
I was in Hood River for a night and came here for breakfast. I ordered the dungeoness crab benedict and it was the yummiest I've ever had with huge chunks of crab. I got a pancake as well and I wish they the berry syrup they served it with because I would buy a couple bottles. The portions were generous and the prices are fair for the quality and quantity you get.
google avatar

Yelp
Bette's Place is a destination restaurant and it's absolutely worth the trip . Bette's is not the kind of restaurant people try because it's right off the highway. Bette's Place is in the middle of town and kinda out of the way. That hasn't stopped droves of people from packing this restaurant for the amazing food they offer. Their cinnamon rolls are the size of teacup plates as are the buttermilk biscuits. I had the chicken fried steak smothered in gravy with a cheddar bacon biscuit. I'm sorry to say the cheddar bacon biscuit wasn't as big as the buttermilk biscuit but that's probably a good thing for my waistline. There was plenty of food at our table and enough to take home for more meals. Yum!

Yelp
What a great, tasty fun menu! We passed by this place a day earlier but didn't realize this is where we would be having breakfast here on another day. Of course we checked it out on YELP. The menu is quite delectable and should have something for everyone's taste buds. I love eggs benedict and had to order them with the Dungeness Crab. It was a little expensive but sure worth it and I'm on vacation! Wife went with the 2 eggs scrambled, hash browns with bacon. Interesting that they gave her falafel bread with her order. Unfortunately we were full and did not taste any of their great pastries. Lots of families were there. The wait was very short. Cafe was really bustling and all the tables were full. When in the area come by for a great breakfast and save room for their pastries or take it to go which we should have done. Buon appetit!

Dinah P.

Yelp
The food is amazing and the service is a 10! People are awesome Love love love Ambience is great
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
Come hungry! Kinda wishing I stuck with my first thought about getting a half order but made it through! A couple blocks from where we are staying and really good. I usually order hollandaise sauce on the side - forgot - and it was good but I did scoop most of it off. Eggs were poached just right. Wayne a scramble that was good - full of yummy stuff! Jeannie served us, and watching her meet everyone needs and run was almost tiring for me. Oh, and there was a yummy p-nut butter/chocolate muffin for desert.
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Friendly service, hot coffee, and massive cinnamon rolls! We tried the Crab Benedict and Chorizo Breakfast Burrito and enjoyed both as well!

Julia S.

Yelp
I really wish I could give a no star review. This place was recommended to us by friends who live here because they said the food was good, but unfortunately we never got to try. I went with my boyfriend and was told it was a 10-15 minute wait. We proceeded to wait well over 20 minutes and every person who came in after us asking for a table for 2 was sat almost immediately. The hostess completely ignored us, and we saw her list of names and that she was just completely skipping our name... very disappointed and uncalled for. Will never be back and will tell our friends/family in the area to do the same. So out of towners should avoid bc you won't get sat.
google avatar

Darcee G.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! Worth the wait. Can be busy on weekends.Amazing huge cinnamon rolls.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
It's a great little diner with excellent service. Truly American Sunday morning food for me. I always take half of it home, but that's good too.
google avatar

Katherine P.

Yelp
Crab Benedict was amazing! They don't skimp out on the crab. Portion size on all their entrees were huge so we definitely had leftovers. The restaurant is nothing fancy just a good hearty breakfast spot that serves great food.
google avatar

Lori I.

Yelp
All we ordered (to go) was the Dungeness Crab Benedict, which came with toast or hash browns. When I got to the register to pay I was shocked when my bill was $30 for the one plate (2 Benedict's plus has browns). But!! I would do it again, it was the best crab Benedict ever-it came with a generous amount of crab meat and the best hollandaise sauce!
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. And I never come to Hood River without having breakfast here. Cinnamon buns are fantastic. And you absolutely have to try their Dungeness crab omelette.
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
What a gem! Super casual and friendly diner in the town of Hood River. Service was fast and efficient eventhough they're bustling with people on the weekend. They've got quite a menu for you to choose from and everything we got was fresh and delicious! Their portion can't be beat so make sure you come here starving. The hashbrowns were across the board crispy and fluffy on the inside; might be the best that I've had! Their Chicken Artichoke Omlette was also very fluffy and full of tender chicken and half a friggin avocado. Their dishes are not the most refined but that's not what you come here for! On top of the huge omlette you also get a mountain of hash and a choice of toast, biscuit, or 2 muffins. You really won't leave this place hungry. Next time, I would totally give their Cinnamon Roll a try.
google avatar

Patrizia G.

Yelp
We were delighted overall. Tasty food, large portions, excellent friendly service and location. Little Gem

Jeri C.

Yelp
Really good food and great service in downtown area. Be sure to sit at a window table because it's a great place to people-watch.

Dina D.

Yelp
Good old fashion breakfast with no thrills. The service was great. The food was prompt and it felt like Home.
google avatar

Kathy S.

Yelp
We stopped here on a trip after seeing all the GREAT Yelp reviews. So glad we did! Nice people, cozy atmosphere, plenty of seating, frequent coffee refills -- and terrific breakfasts! The High Winds Scramble is a mountain of food and just delicious. The French toast comes with both berry syrup and warm maple syrup. And we ended up buying an entire strawberry rhubarb pie to take to my parents' place to surprise them. We didn't get the cinnamon roll, but we saw it! It's huge! We will make this our breakfast stop from now on when we visit up here.

Mary P.

Yelp
The cinnamon rolls and danishes are the best!! Very friendly staff. I would definitely go back.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
If you are ever in Hood River you need to have Breakfast at Bette's Place. Please have a cinnamon bun, but make sure there is two of you. If you try to do one yourself do not add order anything else for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The rest of breakfast was excellent as well
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
This place hold memories and nostalgia for me since I had been here time and time again back in the 1990's and had my last visit either in 1997 or 1998 (25 years ago). I would come from Gresham with my dad and my grandma to eat breakfast and wonder around the area. Coming here with my wife, mother and father for Father's Day today, it was a flashback all over again. The place still looks the same inside and it's great. The fresh made pies, cinnamon rolls and huge generous portions of food is welcoming. A decent price for what you get too! The food taste great, of course and there's not one bad thing to say about any of it or the service and I highly recommend coming here with your kids to pass down the tradition that still stayed standing during COVID!

Julia N.

Yelp
The food is great, the portions are enormous. The service is fast, the staff is friendly and helpful. Bette's Place is a Hood River classic!
google avatar

Heather P.

Yelp
We walked up and I asked the woman at the reception desk how long we might wait once seated. She said, "Fastest restaurant I've ever been to," and she wasn't lying! We waited three minutes for a table, which was amazing considering it was 10:30am on a Saturday morning. Once seated, we were immediately greeted and our coffee was ordered. Within minutes our server introduced herself, took our order, and our food came within ten minutes. The food was delicious; I had two eggs with German sausage, hashbrowns, and sourdough toast, and my husband had the chicken fried steak, opting for a biscuit vs toast. We were beyond impressed with everything and will definitely stop here again when we're in town!
google avatar

Don N.

Yelp
Wow! What a great place! Huge portions of delicious preparations made with fresh ingredients (no Sysco here!) In my Country Skillet, I could taste the individual flavors of the different meats, eggs, etc. Her Dungeness Crab Wrap was also very flavorful and unique. The filling tasted fresh and had a nice texture, not heavy or dense. And the baked goods, you just have to try them, definitely homemade quality! Come hungry, you won't be sorry.
google avatar

Anji R.

Yelp
Food was satisfactory. But I felt the service was pretty bad. We came in with a big family, the server didn't seem to pay attention at all. We had to call her several times for cutlery, napkins, etc. it wasn't welcoming at all.

Christine M.

Yelp
The bacon and spinach quiche was overcooked - dry and crumbly in the middle and very tough on top. Worse yet it had cinnamon in it and not a subtle "maybe" flavor. It had an obvious cinnamon flavor. My husband said his dungeness crab benedict was wonderful, bringing my review up to 2 stars
