Betty Rae's Ice Cream

It’s overrated and overpriced for me, customer service was not too friendly, guess they had a busy night. I’m from out of town, so I got a flight since I wanted to try most of flavors(they can’t even let you pick the flavor). Everything tasted so similar to me, also the size of the scoops are not even.

Went here for the first time with my daughter and a friend (and her daughter) on a busy night. First off the ice cream is really good! I got butter pecan and cookies & cream on a cake cone, and my daughter had cereal and milk. Totally yummy. 😋 That said… the customer service was kind of a mess. When we asked to taste a few flavors, it felt like we were bothering the staff. I asked about cones and felt super rushed. After paying, the cashier was straight-up rude, telling us to “move out of the way” right after we said we were helped. When I asked for a little cup for my daughter, no one noticed—thankfully another customer stepped in to help. I get it, it was busy, but a little patience and kindness goes a long way. Ice cream? Great. Staff? Could use some work.

Amazing variety of flavors and you can have free samples. Ice Cream coffee to! Very cozy. Had a long line but went fast. Staff very nice. We will definitely be a repeat visitor!

Delicious, as always. After a great meal at a nice restaurant, I like to end my evening with ice cream dessert here. (As an aside, I find most restaurant desserts are waaaay toooo sweet.)

Visited for the first time recently and while I did think the gooey butter cake icecream was good I just couldn’t get over the smell in this shop. I’m not sure if it’s pet friendly or not ( gross imo if so ) but it severely smelled like wet dogs. Usually you smell the delicious sweet icecream / waffle cones etc walking into icecream shops so that really ruined the whole experience for me. The whole time I ate my icecream all I could think about was the smell , which ultimately grossed me out .. won’t be back to this location. I may consider the other location but idk I might stick with icecream bae …

Amazing 🤩 staff. I had the s’mores ice cream in a waffle bowl. The ice cream was ok and the waffle bowl was yummy. Prices were reasonable.

The ice cream is incredibly creamy and packed with flavor. They offer an impressive variety of both traditional favorites and fun, unique flavors. The best deal? Definitely the ice cream flights – six generous scoops for just $15! Between the two of us, we sampled 11 different flavors, and each one was better than the last. Our top picks: Brown Butter Pecan, Lemon Bar, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Brownie, Cookies & Cream, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Honorable mentions go to S’mores and Cereal & Milk (hello, Fruity Pebbles nostalgia!). If you’re in the area, don’t miss this sweet spot – it’s worth every bite!

Amazing ice cream and milkshakes. The selection is also impressive and a lot of fun! I forgot to take a Pic of the menu, but they have some wild flavors! Would definitely hit them up if you're an ice cream lover or if you like trying some new flavors! The wife and I got chiefs cake and red velvet cake recently. Both AMAZING. Chiefs cake was a yellow cake ice cream. The staff and atmosphere were also great

Normally, we have a five-star experience at Betty Rae's. However, tonight, everything felt off. The store was very busy, which isn't unusual, but the two gentlemen working seemed disorganized while two females were scooping ice cream. I really felt for the females, as they were overwhelmed with orders and had no support. I ordered my usual scoop of brownie with marshmallow fluff, toasted, and gummy bears. When I took my first bite, I was surprised by a sour-tasting liquid that was supposed to be marshmallow. I immediately had to spit it out. When I spoke to an employee about it, they seemed to already know there was an issue. I wasn't offered a refund, but they did remake my scoop without the marshmallow fluff, so I'm just out the extra I paid for the topping. I hope this was just a one-time experience because I've been a loyal customer since the doors first opened in Kansas City.

My favorite parts of a charcuterie board, all mixed together and turned into ice cream! Goat cheese, apricot, and walnuts. Salty, fruity, sweet, nutty, slightly bitter. Who wouldn't want a blend of flavor profiles with every bite? Betty Rae's offers classic flavors as well as more unique flavors like the one I listed above. They also do ice cream flights, coffee, and affogato! Service was fast, and they don't skimp on the scoops!

I don't understand how this place is so highly rated. Maybe because I am only an out-of-town visitor. I must say I was very disappointed in my experience at Betty Rae's. I came here with friends at an hour before closing on a random weeknight and we stood in line for 90 mins. Two out of the four of us gave up halfway through and left, but two of us stayed behind to Make it through the door to buy ice cream. It was a really hot Kansas City evening so we were sweating our behinds off outside, but we were grateful to finally be able to get inside and buy some ice cream. There were only two young people working behind the counter and they were hustling, but with the super long line they just could not keep up. I'm not sure how the store is run but I think they need to hire more people or do something else about this because that was ridiculous. The worst part was we finally got our ice cream but since the store was closing, we had to go outside to eat and on a hot Kansas City evening my ice cream melted within three minutes. So after waiting over an hour in the heat I only got to try the ice cream for a few bites before it all became a milkshake. I know that's not the fault of the store but honestly, the flavors of the ice cream were nothing spectacular. They also ran out of the flavors. I actually wanted so that was not great either. Also, just so you know, if you were the last person to make it in line, you get a sticker on your shirt that says you are the last person and somehow it becomes your responsibility to turn away the 45 people that will come after you. The guy that was last was so frustrated and furious that he had to be the one to turn everybody away and he had to deal with all those people huffing and puffing at him. I hope he at least got free ice cream. All in all, I'm just confused at the high ratings because to me this place was just like any typical ice cream parlor except it was poorly run.

This was delicious! I came in looking for creamy and rich American-style ice cream and that's exactly what I got. As it was my first time here, I didn't know what to get. But I was able to try as many flavors as I wanted, despite a long line behind me, which I appreciated. Note, it is loud inside and I thought the shop smelled strange for some reason. I got a double scoop of creme brulee and butter cake. The creme brulee had some caramelized flavor while the butter cake definitely tasted like a rich yellow cake, and they balanced each other out nicely. Also these scoops are huge! Maybe bring someone to share with because it was a lot to finish as one person. I feel like I got enough ice cream to get 3 quarters of a pint! Would highly recommend if you've got an ice cream craving, it'll hit the spot for sure!

Great ice cream place in Kansas City!! We came here and the line wasn't too bad. It goes by fast and there's lots of seating area. You can sample some flavors before deciding. I love how creamy it is and perfectly sweet! Lots of street parking in the area! A must in KC!

This is a very popular spot for ice cream, and the line is usually pretty long, so be prepared to wait. The employees are kind and hard-working, but the place does seem understaffed at times, which likely contributed to the line. They have a good selection of unique ice cream flavors - I tried s'mores and creme brûlée, both of which were super creamy and packed with flavor. They have a quaint and cozy interior with some indoor seating, as well as a small outdoor patio. It is located right along the street car line, so it is easy to access. Overall a great experience, other than the wait. I'll be back the next time I'm in town.

This was a small location with seating outside. The line was out the door when we arrived, and it took a good amount of time for us to order given there were only two people working. They had lots of variety with lots of interesting choices to select from. I had a small cup of their lemon poppyseed ginger cake. This was good and extremely creamy. There was plenty of lemon flavoring and it was not too sweet with the ginger cake pieces swirled in. I liked how the pieces were small enough where not a lot of chewing needed to be done. I also tried the chocolate brownie. This was really good too, but the brownie pieces were a little large and tougher to chew, but not a big deal as the overall ice cream was tasty. Will I go back? Certainty.

Popular local artisan ice cream. Seems to always have a decent line and wait, they could use more help as there were only 2 people working who were doing their best to try and keep up with serving everyone while also making waffle cones. It feels like they could afford to have another 1-2 people on staff to keep the line moving. Ice cream was very good, very creamy and dense (in a good way). Tried the goat cheese with apricots which had the nice tang of the goat cheese, but was a little too strong for my mood, so went with the gooey butter cake which was rich with nice chunks of cake. They ran out of the lavendar honey unfortunately which would have been my choice. Also, not a large selection of flavors.

The ice cream is so worth the wait! We bookmarked this and had gone here twice in one visit to KC. The line was out the door, but it went by fairly quickly. Make sure to check in on Yelp to get the waffle cone. The waffle cone is made fresh in-house. It's more like a thin, crispy, sweet pancake sort of cone. The cone is pretty fragrant, and not like your typical waffle cone. One of the ice cream flavors I got was the ooey gooey butter cake (think it was called this type of cake). It was like a better version of vanilla. It wasn't too sweet, and was a nice simple flavor. The second time, I ordered the brown butter pecan ice cream. It was a good flavor, although a little on the sweeter side for me. There's a generous amount of pecan. As far as ice cream texture, their ice creams are creamy, and not icy. Service was friendly! They sell t shirts that are pretty cute, as well. Overall, I highly recommend!

An interesting stop on a business trip it was time for ice cream! Once we arrived the line was out the door and down the sidewalk. We arrived at 8:50PM and it took us ~30 min to get to the counter. The staff being the counter never slowed down! Mad props go out to them! They could have easily used extra help! They were gracious even when customers wasted too taste test several flavors. They had limited seating inside and a small patio outside. Luckily we grabbed 4 stools to enjoy our ice cream! Sadly I only snagged one picture because my battery went dead. Overall it was enjoyable and I would recommend making a stop even if there is a line.

Loved the ice cream here. My husband enjoyed the creme Brule ice cream, and I had the lemonice cream that was good. The lines are long on a Sunday, but they move pretty quickly. At least you will have time to check their menu while you wait.

Was in KC and wanted some ice cream so I stopped here with some friends and we all loved the ice cream. Such a cute shop and their homemade waffle cones have such a pretty design on them! I got the salted pretzel flavor which was super yummy :) the workers were so nice too and let you sample different flavors if you'd like. There was a super long line when we came though but it was a Saturday night.

The fruity pebbles flavor is soso good! 10/10! They luckily have sizes for everyone, no matter how small or big of an amount you want :) the atmosphere inside the shop is really nice-good decoration and clean.

The owners, or manager, refuse to staff the building adequately. It's never slow - the line is out the door more often than not - and I swear to God, there was a single employee on hand the last time I stopped to pick up a pint. One employee manning a store full of screaming children, annoyed middle-class families, and sticky fires waiting to be put out. One person to make the food, stock the paper goods, manage people, clean bathrooms, close at the end of the night. People who've clearly never worked in the service industry would say "you're doing so well" in the most patronizing tone imaginable, while the employee faked a smile as well as anybody has. It's 2024! If you treat your employees like shit, don't pay them enough to live on, and let the building fall to pieces, you deserve to go out of business.

So came here the other night after a rich meal with LRoth. We were craving for sweets and in an ice cream mood. Line was pretty impressive even for a Monday night. It wasn't down the block like I've heard, but it was a little out the door. In terms of the ice cream, there were plenty of flavors. Some more on the traditional side, some quite unique. I tried a goat cheese, candied walnuts, and apricot ice cream. For me, the ice cream wasn't as creamy as I would've liked. I could feel some ice crystals. The textures didn't mesh well. LRoth had S'mores and coffee, which were much richer and creamier. Better flavor.

This ice cream place is very popular. Nicely located very close to river market. A few blocks away from Downtown. They have outdoor and indoor seating. Service is quick. Excellent ambiance. They have multiple flavors. Overall, the ice cream is good but nothing out of this planet. Sylas & Maddys has more tasty flavors

Definitely my favorite ice cream shop in Kansas City. This is the 2nd location I've tried. ITS AMAZING and since I make my own homemade ice cream I'm quite the connoisseur and self proclaimed expert. Service was good Ambiance is great in both locations. River Market location seemed easier to get into. I've been to the Wornall Rd location a few years ago.

Truly delicious ice cream. But, they have to figure out how to move people faster. No other ice cream store in the city has their problems. Expect to wait 45 minutes to an hour and that's on a slow night. Get a better system in place because as good as the ice cream is, people aren't going to keep coming back.

Betty Rays is a great day time delight, or late night spot. They have an assortment of fun and traditional flavors , with seasonal and local newness.

A must try place for ice cream lovers! There are a lot of flavors to choose from, but they let you try as many as you want. I ended up deciding on Cereal & Milk and Creme Brulee in a waffle bowl. They also have Lactaid you can buy for 50¢ for my lactose sensitive/intolerant friends lol. And there's also a cute photo booth inside the store!

I was down at City Market and wanted something sweet after lunch so I made my way to Berry Rae's. I ordered two different scoops in a waffle bowl. I really liked the bowl option because with just a cone I feel like I have to rush before it melts and falls apart. This was a great option. The service was fast once we got through the massive line. But it was hot so that was expected. The first scoop I tried was the Brown Butter & Toasted Pecans: A sweet, nutty browned butter ice cream with pecan pieces candied in brown sugar in house. It was good. It wasn't super sweet and there were quite a few pecans. The second scoop was my favorite and I will return just to get this again. Goat Cheese, Apricots, & Candied Walnuts: Fresh goat cheese ice cream swirled with chopped apricots and walnut pieces candied in house. Flavor explosion! The flavors just melded perfectly. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a baklava cone or maybe just baklava and then ice cream on top. Good thing City Market is right there because that's probably gonna happen. They have other unique and quirky flavors and plain ones too. I don't think you can really go wrong. They do have a few seats inside but the outside patio is much larger but tends to be crowded. Check them out this summer!

I can't believe I have lived in Kansas City for several years and haven't reviewed Betty Rae's - the staple KC ice cream stop. People will say it's not worth the hype, but those people are wrong. If you see a line that stretches an entire city block for ice cream on a Friday night, you know it's gotta be good. Don't be scared by the line - it moves quick! Their staple flavors are great, but I always like to try their rotating flavors! Sometimes they're super weird (Joe's KC barbecue or elotes) and sometimes they're fun and seasonal (dirt & worms, being one of my favorites). Definitely get a waffle cone or waffle bowl. They have ice cream flights if you're struggling to decide on a flavor or two! I now live 1 block away from Betty Rae's, and I have to go every week, or I start to get antsy. My girlfriend and I need a sign for the number of days since our last trip to Betty Rae's, and it would always be below 8. This is a KC staple for a reason!

This place is addictive... I've been coming to this location a lot after many dinners in town. I was so happy when I knew that Betty Rae's was opening a location close to market place. The flavours are different and creative, I have to admit that I am not that adventurous to try the "Burnt Ends" but I love the Honey Lavender and Cinnamon ones. Sometimes, depending on who is serving you the size of the "scoop" is too small but in general if you order 2 scoops , you will be happy. You will need to find parking in the streets and sometimes it is hard but walking a couple of blocks to burn some calories is not bad... ha ha :) I would say that this is the best ice cream in KC... and believe me, the only competition they had closed during the pandemia (Glace Artisan) . ** Be ready to be in line for 10 min during peak hours

They truly have the best ice cream!!! Today was super nice and there was a soccer game, so when the worker saw me say to my husband "dang they're out of birthday cake" he offered to make me chocolate ice cream with cake chunks. I thought this was so thoughtful and it was delicious!

First time in Kansas City and I was intrigued by the menu flavors. I had an idea of what I wanted when I went. The cashier was so helpful and friendly. I ordered the Busy Bee which was a sponge honeycomb candy flavor with a blend of honey and a 2nd layer of the Goat cheese with dried apricots and Candied Walnuts. This tasted like a charcuterie board in ice cream form! They were both so amazing and so good. Definitely come in here and try the flavors you haven't tried before. They won't disappoint!

My wife and I were heading across the country as we moved from Wisconsin to Colorado and we stopped here after dinner while in KCMO. In all fairness, this place gets a 4/5 stars because we just moved from the land of frozen custard but that being said, this place is VERY good and gets a 5 stars while not being custard. We got the main/original sampler platter which had amazing flavors. You can definitely taste the intended flavors in each of the scoops and the ice cream is nice and smooth. Fast service, reasonable price, friendly staff. Definitely support this business.

A nicely decorated modern ice cream shop that doesn't break the bank. There was a line out the door even on a weeknight so it must be popular among locals in Kansas City. The brownie sundae with ooey gooey butter cake flavor with toasted marshmallow fluff in place of whipped cream since they were out of whipped cream that night was delicious. However, the ice cream wasn't as rich and creamy as the other ice cream shops in the city.

Delicious local spot in KC! I got the chocolate brownie and cookie dough. The double scoop was HUGE - so come with an appetite. Be prepared for a line, but it is worth the wait.

The salted caramel syrup topping is the best thing to ever go on top of ice cream, add it to any ice cream favor and it takes it to the next level. Line is always long but that's only because it's so popular. Servers are efficient and friendly even with the line down the block. It's a much when in Kansas City

Y e s. Run here and get a scoop or three. When a place is busy you assume it's really good. That assumption is true with this place and it's so worth the wait.

We go to Betty Raes every time we visit kc because my fiance is an ice cream connoisseur (yes that's a thing ). The line was to the truck as usual and we waited 10-15 minutes. I decided to go for an ice cream sandwich this time and went with the cereal chiller. It has fruity pebble type cookies with cereal milk flavored ice cream. It tasted exactly as I'd hoped and it was pretty big so I actually put half in the fridge and ate it for a late night snack. I really like eating our ice cream on the patio in the sun.

Excellent ice cream, they have their stables but also have a rotating menu. The honey lavender was absolutely amazing... it's a must try!!!

Tasty ice cream on a hot day. Fast friendly service. The cereal milk flavor was great and seemed to be very popular. Cereal soaked in heavy cream, strained, then put in the ice cream maker. Once frozen at least 5 crunchy fresh cereals are added. Fun and tasty. Plenty of seating inside with minimal decor. Make sure to feed the meters if you're parking in the street outside. They seemed to be patrolled quite frequently.

Amazing and unique flavors of ice creams to try. Service was quick for having long lines. Got a flight and all the flavors were amazing, tasted high quality. My favorite was definitely goat cheese with apricots and candied walnuts, super unique and worth the try if you're looking for something different.

I love Betty Rae's so much - this visit we tried the new strawberry jello salad flavor. It was so nostalgic! I know it's likely just seasonal, but I'm hoping they rotate it in occasionally. The waffle cone (thanks, Yelp check in ;) ) was tasty. The service was great as usual. They're always so dang nice, even when the line is long! We sat by the window and people watched a little. The patio is nice and shady, if that's your scene.

We came to Betty Rae's 3 nights in a row on our recent trip. The line out the door to the sidewalk piqued our interest. Fortunately, it moved quickly and we were at the counter within 20 minutes. If your from the Northwest, I'd say the closest comparison to Betty's is Salt and Straw. But, I like Betty's more! All 3 nights we got a double scoop in a cone of elote, and another flavor (brown butter pecan, then coffee). Elote was our favorite; tangy and slightly spicy. To top it all off, the staff was very friendly. We had no issue with using the free waffle cone Yelp check-in offer.

You can tell this is a yummy and popular place to get ice cream in the area when the line is about 12 people outside the door. Not to worry - the line moved fast and the short wait was worth it! They have amazing ice cream with a great variety of flavors. We will definitely make it a point to come back here when we're in the area again.

Very good ice cream! Quick stop and quick service. Lots of flavors, and definitely some unique ones. Really appreciated the non-dairy offerings. Got to sample ice creams before (just a couple!) and appreciated that when making the choice. Quick and tasty, would recommend.

It's ice cream. I mean, what's there to say about it? I've never had bad ice cream, but I've also never had amazing ice cream either. It tastes like any other kind to me. I do think their cookies and cream is a bit better than most brands as there are more chunks of Oreo. Overpriced for one scoop- $5. Won't be back. Unsure what the hype is.

One of the best ice creams I ever had sorry I Didn't take a picture they have a bunch of favors and even have a sundae with brownie chunks in it the people are nice and wait time is good their service is great. And the ambiance is a nice cool causal ice cream vibe. You can eat the ice cream outside or inside they don't have dirty bathrooms and if you have a kid they can color on a a coloring page with the crayons they give you thanks for reading my review. Sorry for a long review

Closed until January 13th . Doing renovations. I was unable to enjoy. I will say the girl was very friendly letting us know. I'll have to come back

There was metered parking in front of the parlor. We found free parking behind. (2 hrs free). There wasn't a line. We checked in on yelp to get a free waffle cone. The big one scoop was big. You can ask for samples before you decide. We got the butter pecan(best), cereal & milk (so so), chocolate brownie (too sweet), & s'mores (tasty). The service was good and prompt. There was seating inside for about 20 customers outside and inside. When we left @ 7 pm on a Wednesday night the line was pretty long.

The cutest ice cream shop with a menu of rotating flavors. We definitely waited in line, but it was worth it. The ice cream is creamy with fresh ingredients, but the waffle cone was super softand fell apart as you were holding it. The only callout is the layout of the shop; it seems backwards. If you form a line to go in, you aren't able to sample flavors until you get to the freezer section, but that's at the end before you check out. We were asked what we would like before we even got to the ice cream section, and as first-timers, that was a bit weird since we didn't know what was on the menu or even had a chance to sample anything. But all in all, a good experience.

Super interesting flavors! I wanted to try a scoop of something I knew I would enjoy and something unique and fun. I ended up getting razz+blue and goat cheese, apricots, and candied walnuts. It was a weird combination to get together but they were both definitely very delicious. I was a little skeptical about the goat cheese being in ice cream but it was not weird at all! In no way did I think my ice cream tasted like cheese so that was definitely good. Definitely a really cute place to hang out with friends. They have some indoor and outdoor seating and it can get a little busy during the warmer months.

What more is there to say? Betty Rae's is a must for any tourist, and a once a week (or more) treat for me having moved to River Market recently! This is my formal petition for Betty Rae's to bring back the dirt n worms flavor from the summer - hands down the best rotating flavor ever. I love that they have fun seasonal flavors - shoutout to the recent winter additions Santa's Cookies, Peppermint Bark, and Chili Hot Chocolate! Also just had a flight for the first time - perfect ice cream portion to share with your girlfriend and also try 6 flavors! Everyone who works there is super nice and efficient. I wish they had better rewards because I am constantly there but otherwise I have literally no complaints (bring back dirt n worms) !

I absolutely love Betty Rae's!! The ice cream flavors are unique with a rotating menu for select flavors. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I come here regularly with friends and I'm never disappointed. Recently I tried their rotating flavors, cake batter and taro. They were both creamy and rich in flavor. One of my favorite regular options is the goat cheese-apricot-candied walnut flavor. It's very different from what I would normally go for but each ingredient balances the others out wonderfully. The shop itself is so cute and retro looking. I would highly recommend coming here for a little treat!

There's always a line at Betty Rae's at any time of day (or night!), but it moves quickly and it's SO worth it. In my opinion, it's the best ice cream in Kansas City. Beautifully creamy and fluffy ice cream that comes in 15-20 in-house flavors, some of which rotate seasonally. I can vouch *strongly* for the Creme Brûlée, Razz & Blue, and Blackberry Crumble (seasonal). Two notes I would drop for Betty Rae's: 1. Dairy-free and/or gluten-free? Betty Rae's has a number of flavors in one or both categories. 2. Strong flavors: Betty Rae's flavors can be surprisingly strong. If you get the goat cheese and apricot, be prepared to consume mass amounts of goat cheese (which sounds like a good time to me, but not to everyone). Subtlety is not always Betty Rae's strong suit, though I wouldn't say their subtlety indicates a lack of quality--just depends on your preferences. On my last visit, I had the Chameleon, which was a perfectly subtle and flavorful lychee ice cream that changes color when sprinkled with your choice of sour patch kids or citric acid. The citric acid is very strong, more along the lines of liquid sour candy than lemon juice, but if you don't like it, the upside is that it's only across the top. I thought it was fun and provided a nice palate cleanser, plus a pretty trick. I also tried the Brown Butter & Toasted Pecans (their most popular flavor right now), which was also great but definitely on the stronger side. It tasted more or less like straight brown butter in ice cream form, which isn't my personal preference, but the rest of our group loved it. So go! If you're reading this, this is your sign to go to go Betty Rae's asap (possibly even right now!), and while you're there, make sure to check in on Yelp so you can get a free waffle cone!

Looking for something family friendly to do in a semi late night? Very Rae's is open until 11pm on Friday and Saturday at their river market location. This was the perfect ending to a fun filled Friday. Downside is that the line is long and there aren't a ton of seating spaces although we did manage to snag one. I stepped out of my comfort zone and got cookies and cream. There are tons of Oreos in this ice cream...too many actually. I'd like more vanilla. The color changing ice cream was a hit with the kid. I helped her eat the gummy worms. The apricot ice cream was good judging by the picture
