Betz Family Winery Won’t Release 2020 Vintage Impacted by Wildfire Smoke - Eater Seattle

"Betz Family Winery — a 24-year-old, well-respected operation that has a tasting room in Redmond — recently announced that it would not be releasing a vintage from 2020, due to the smoky impacts last year’s wildfires had on harvested grapes. The business has vineyards in Eastern Washington, as well as a Pinot Noir project from Oregon’s Willamette Valley, regions which endured a devastating wildfire season in the summer of 2020. Betz’s announcement highlights ongoing concerns many Pacific Northwest and California winemakers have on how the “taint” from wildfire smoke will affect the industry — in October 2020, several wineries in Oregon pulled out of grape contracts due to such factors. Now, with another potentially major wildfire season ahead, those fears will only grow and may lead to more wineries skipping vintages. 'We never considered for one second sending wines to customers that are flawed,' the Betz owners told Great Northwest Wine. 'While it is brutal to have to do this, the decision was easy.'" - Gabe Guarente

It was our 5 year anniversary and we are so happy we chose to spend it with the Betz.we were not sure what to expect at the start. They had a busy afternoon, with stragglers lingering when we arrived. A slower, late start opened up to an afternoon of great conversation. We got to learn a lot about the vines the winery uses in Washington, Oregon and South Africa. They provided a beautiful board of pairings, with specific selections for each wine and this ended up as our favorite part of the day. We got to know the two individuals running the tasting, and we found them to be personable and unique, a great representation of Betz winery.

I have done small and large events in this market for decades. My recent tasting event at Betz Family Winery was a huge success. The wine and the tasting facility were superb. What stood out most for me and my group was the exceptional staff: Cherie and Lisa. Their high level of professionalism and warm hospitality was was felt by all, especially our large sponsors and donors. The Winery is fortunate to have team members, like Cherie and Lisa, who deliver the same excellence shown in the wine. I would be remiss to not mention Ingin and her great service with our guests. 5 stars for the wine and staff!

Fantastic hands on wine experience. Excellent selection and superb service. Our sommelier, Lizzie, recommended us tastings that fit our profile. The intimate setting and hands on experience was the best of any tasting I’ve been to yet.

One of the best tasting rooms in the area. They offer so many different wines to taste and try, and I can't recall ever having a bad experience with one. They also serve food, making it a great location to stop for a drink and catch up with friends...or simply unwind away from the daily grind.

Does having great wine make up for being a bad business owner? In today's day and age, is discrimination and lack of a moral compass acceptable as long as you make a good product? The more I sink my toes into the wine industry the more horrible things I begin to hear through the grape vine (pun intended) in regards to the owners of Betz Winery. If only the previous owner can see what has become of his legacy. Employees being treated like trash and discriminated against, being taken advantage of and underpaid. It's a disgrace to see what has happened to this place in comparison to what it once was. Great wine is a wonderful thing...it's a shame that Betz is being so poorly operated.

Made a reservation on Open Table. Uber’d to the tasting room and they were not open. They overlooked our reservation. Definitely need to call to confirm your ‘confirmed tasting reservation’. Frustrated!

Great service! Loved working with Bridgit. They are able to communicate via text for follow up and questions and just made the whole experience of working with them easy.
