There's something classic and comforting about Beyond the Edge. The bar has been around for years and has all the makings of a great dive spot - hot wings, cheap beer, and trivia nights. But while there are some things to love about this place, there are also a few drawbacks to keep in mind.
First off, the hot wings are great. They're definitely the stand-out item on the food menu. However, the rest of the food isn't anything to write home about. It's decent enough, but don't expect any gourmet fare. It's bar food. Expect bar food. Don't expect anything less. Just let it be. At least they have food. If it isn't your vibe, eat at the food truck across the street before rolling into the joint.
As for the drinks, they're not the best. They'll do the trick if you're just looking for something to sip on, but if you're a real cocktail connoisseur, look elsewhere. On the bright side, they do have some good deals on two-for-one beers, and the beer selection is good enough to have a decent variety.
Trivia night is always a mixed bag. Sometimes, it's great, but other times, it can be frustrating. The real bummer is that the person who runs the trivia changes frequently, so you never really know what you're going to get. Plus, sometimes the game runs over two hours when it's supposed to wrap up by 9 PM. I just prefer consistency, and that doesn't exist when playing here. Just plan to be here for 2.5 or 3 hours, and you'll be fine.
Parking is a bit of a pain, too. Your best bet is finding street parking, but if you can't snag a spot, you'll have to pay for the lot next door. Beyond the Edge only has three customer spots available, or at least that is what I saw when we pulled up. The latest time, some jackass double parked in 2 of the 3 spots.
Service can also be hit or miss. While the servers are friendly, they're not always attentive. Though it might not be super busy on trivia night, we often find ourselves with one server running the entire time overloading them with patrons.
One area where Beyond the Edge could improve is service by having more than just one server for trivia night. While the servers are friendly and personable, their ability to juggle the crowd, either small or intermediate in size, is lacking. If you're fine with taking things at a leisurely pace and aren't super hungry or in a rush for a drink, then you'll be fine here.
It is a firm 3 stars for me. I'm not in love. I don't hate it. Beyond the Edge falls right in the middle of everything.
