Viet (CoTu would-have-been English teacher) was the best guide I’ve ever had, ever. Selfless, enthusiastic, and funny. Also loved being the only tourist. ||But was NOT a particularly quiet meditative experience. Bungalows right next to main road. Since the entire village apparently knows the WiFi password, slow connection at night. Karaoke before 6a, so don’t expect to sleep in! Also be prepared to grapple with your tourist privilege as your hosts live in poverty, as well as to feel a bit like you’re walking thru a zoo (looking into private houses etc). ||4.5 very long, stressful hours from Hoi An by loud, dirty, dusty, fumey Jeep (including skippable Cham temple and other stops thru driver, who generally seemed to be annoyed by requests for photo stops). I almost skipped the weaving just to avoid another hour RT in Jeep (and more expenses), but was impressed by loomless weaving (much more interesting and fun than archery). 1.5 hrs to Danang airport without any stops (arriving 30 min early), even though better weather for pics. After skipping lunch, apparently could not stop for food, leaving me to scrounge airport’s very limited overpriced offerings. ||This was also by far my most expensive 36 hrs in Vietnam. Try to do as much as you can with/thru the village itself instead of thru travel agency/hotel. Bungalows apparently affiliated with Hoi An Chic hotel, which I cancelled for comparable family run hotel for fraction of HAC price. Odd and curious that driver asked me how much I was paying for their services. Apparently there’s a public bus to/from Danang (at least) and there are a couple of village-run homestays in Bho Hoong and Droong villages, if you’re able to finagle advance arrangements.
