What to Know About the Russian Hill Bi-Rite Market in San Francisco | Eater SF

"At 2140 Polk Street I learned that Bi-Rite Market opened on Thursday, August 29 as the chain’s largest location (4,000 square feet) and its new company headquarters; founding partner Sam Mogannam says the opening “feels like I’m coming home,” and he framed the store as a restoration of what inspired Bi‑Rite and a commitment to the neighborhood. Offerings mirror other locations—locally sourced produce, wine, chocolate—plus a newly installed kitchen for grab-and-go salads and made-to-order sandwiches, including the Lone Mountain achiote chicken sandwich with avocado, provolone, and chipotle aioli on focaccia, and opening specials such as the caprese (mozzarella, heirloom tomato, basil, balsamic) and the mortadella (mortadella, Parmigiano‑Reggiano, pistachio pesto, arugula, black pepper aioli). There is no butcher counter here; instead there’s a full-service fish counter beside the sandwich line and pre-packaged cuts from the butcher team (chicken, steaks, pork, lamb), plus a deep cheese and charcuterie selection. The aisles are intentionally left roomier so the store can respond to neighborhood requests (Mogannam says they can often source an item in a week), and opening-weekend plans include live music, a limited tote giveaway, and a donation of 3% of weekend sales to Project Open Hand." - Dianne de Guzman

Knife Shop Bernal Cutlery Is the Newest Tenant at San Francisco’s Ferry Building | Eater SF

"Russian Hill is getting Bi-Rite’s biggest and grandest store at 2140 Polk Street, opening Thursday, August 29; beyond produce, meats, and grocery items, the new location will include a kitchen, sandwich counter, fish and meat cases, and a baked goods section, and will serve as the company’s HQ under a 26-year lease." - Dianne de Guzman

The New Russian Hill Bi-Rite Market Gets Even Bigger With Expansion | Eater SF

"I saw that Bi-Rite Market purchased Real Foods Co. at 2140 Polk Street and expanded the project to include the adjacent storefront at 2134 Polk Street, a change that pushed the opening back to Spring 2024. Construction will involve structural work to combine the two storefronts, a buildout of a new kitchen, and relocating some stairs. The larger footprint will increase aisle space for shoppers, and a newly signed multi-decade lease should keep the store in the area for years to come." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
Bi-rite is a treat. The produce is local, sustainable, and picked with care. I find lots of interesting and unique fruits and vegetables, and I appreciate that they aren't wrapped in plastic. Shopping here is a splurge, but if I can afford it I want to support responsible vendors that are kind to animals, people, and the environment. I'm surprised by the outrage about pricing: bi-rite doesn't claim to be a value supermarket. I don't shop here for my daily needs, but the prepared foods are tasty. I've bought the chicken noodle soup + chocolate honeycomb squares as a care package for my friends that are currently sick. Welcome to the neighborhood, bi-rite!

Google
May 2025 Trendy grocery category that's been gaining a bit more popularity nowadays with the younger generation. A more stylish and niche type of specialized grocer that leans towards sustainable produce and more crafted takeaways. Displays are well stocked and visually appealing. This store mainly centers on food indredients and has no counters often found in other groceries though.

Google
This store is fantastic. The new owners are really good. I notice all the employees are friendly and proactive. The new quality of the food is top shelf. Their prices are reasonable for how good the quality is. I am so happy to have this community focused quality market in our local area.

Google
Super super over priced! Like why? A simple chain bread, 2-3 dollars more than normal price. Frozen pizza for $17, overpriced veggies and fruit. Chips overpriced. Not sure why they are still in business. Nothing too special. The prepared meals are nice, but also - again too expensive. If items were super special or unique i would understand, but no. A simple small piece of carrot cake $10, in a basic plastic container. Nope

Staff saying I need to use one of your baskets for shopping. I dont know if theyre clean or not why does it matter im giving you guys business. NOT ANYMORE!. Wheres the sign saying i HAVE to?

Google
Welcome! I’ve shopped at all the BiRites in San Francisco. This one is the largest. It’s strong points are the grab & go salads and take home foods as well as heat up complete meals. I also love the housemade baked goods. The layout hasn’t changed very much from the previous Real Foods market. I do like BiRite for their community support and 18 Reasons non-profit education space in the Mission. This indie market is locally owned too. I wish the prices were a little bit lower, however. But with having a meat and deli counter, BiRite seems to all bases covered except no Ice Cream scoop shop :( as they used to have at their NOPA store. Most sad about that since we need it in the neighborhood.

Google
A wonderful high-quality market that carries both staples and more gourmet offerings. Love their produce, ready-to-eat items--and ice cream! Great, friendly staff. Always really enjoy shopping here. A fantastic addition to the neighborhood!

Google
This place will blow your mind. It's a cross between a grocery store and a fast-casual restaurant. Reminds me of a small-scale version of what Whole Foods used to be when it was at its best. Every item on the shelves feels like it was selected by foodie artisan who wants you to experience something incredibly special and never buy ordinary groceries again.

Yelp
Their desserts are delicious and freshly made each day! Just tried their thanksgiving TV dinner that's being offered for T-Day. Excellent quality from moist turkey thick slices to mash potatoes and gravey a little bit of everything in a small package

Gary G.

Yelp
Overall very happy to have Bi-Rite in the neighborhood. Really wish you would bring back potato salad to the Polk/Russian Hill store.

Yelp
Was so excited when this store finally opened on Polk!! The inside is as expected - bougie, expensive produce and branded groceries. I was pleasantly surprised by their flower selection and premade food section. Their sandwiches are surprisingly affordable (at $14 for a hefty meal) in comparison. I tried the lone mountain and it was absolutely delicious - will definitely be coming back to try more.
google avatar

Yelp
Spacious location with nice curations. Delicious sandwiches made to order at the deli! The focaccia is perfect and chipotle aioli great in the lone mountain sandwich. Would recommend! There is some seating outside to enjoy a bite

Yelp
Another Bi-Rite Market that quickly replaced Real Food Company in Russian Hill. I used to love the predecessor until I truly loved what's even better for both our local communities and our planet. The atmosphere in the local grocery store was just the same as the one in Alamo Square; business friendly. The first time I was window shopping to check out Samovar loose tea pouches, I love to see masala chai right before I swing by several days later. Turned out they're sold out because many people who shopped here love traditional chai. That comes to show how much we're head over heels for Bi-Rite Market which has mostly organic produce. I might be back to Bi-Rite Market if I'm itching to buy what's good.

Yelp
Interesting store as I've heard about this place and wanted to check it out. Previous reviews did say this was gonna be a pricey place...and it definitely is. It's actually above Whole Foods prices even at quality produce and things, even with their claimed sources of many items. It's worth checking this place out for the experience, but I cannot imagine this as a weekly grocery place - it's just not practical and many items costs more than if you got a quality take out. The fresh product selection had some nice items, ranging about $2.99 to $5.99 per pound. For reference, bananas here at the time of this post was $1.79 a pound. Did it taste any different or, "organically fresher" than your regular supermarket bananas at a third of the price? NOPE. They don't have frozen food here, some microwaveable meals that averaged about $14.99-$16.99 an entree. Potato chips were about $6.99 a large bag. Fun to have visited, but might be my only visit quite honestly. Unless you just want some fancy groceries, you can maybe pass on this store.

Yelp
I've been back this year ..a few months ago ..sunflowers ..lunch poke panna cotta ...chips guacamole ..fun browsing

Yelp
I was grocery shopping a few weeks ago and they had samples of the Lone Mountain sandwich. While I already had dinner plans, I almost threw them out the window and ordered this sandwich then and there. I ended up coming back the following week to try the full sandwich and it did NOT disappoint. It was so divine I can't even describe. Perfect flavors, not dry, yummy focaccia, 10/10 perfection. It was so good that I literally went back the next day and got the exact same thing. Sometimes the line can get long, so consider ordering ahead online. Bi-rite as a grocery store is great too. Upscale, a bit pricey, but yummy food. My FAVORITE premade bite is the avocado chicken salad - SO yummy on sourdough. I used to get it twice a week per my pregnancy cravings.

Yelp
We got sandos from bi-rite for a little picnic and they were excellent!! I loved the lone mountain (better than the sutro in my opinion)! The focaccia was excellent with flavorful toppings and plenty of meat! Sandwiches in SF can be pricy but imo this one's worth it at $14. Will be coming back for it again!

Yelp
I've loved Bi-Rite Market for years. Their Divisidero location is my usual go-to since we love doing other things in NoPa/Fillmore, but I'm glad this one in Russian Hill has opened somewhat recently in the past year. This Bi-Rite Market is way bigger than all of their other locations in SF. It doesn't feel cramped - it feels like a regular sized grocery store, good for them! You can walk around comfortably, browsing their niche products without feeling like you're obstructing someone's view. The products here are just as amazing as their other stores. I love their produce, because you can really taste the quality. They list the farm name and location, giving great context into their produce. I really value that they care about their food. I want to emphasize that you can really taste the quality - anything I get here will taste like restaurant quality. That being said, everything with great quality usually comes with a high price tag, and so I can't come here for my weekly grocery trip, but rather for a special dinner party or meal. You can find specialty products here, that you can't find at your regular Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. For instance, my husband loves this special butter here that is imported from France. They also have locally sourced eggs from Petaluma (Nicasio Valley) and Napa (used at the French Laundry), which are fun to try every now and then. The service is always fantastic here too. I was trying to make a special recipe for an upcoming dinner party, and bought the incorrect ingredient. I brought back my product (unopened, unused), and they gave me a full refund no questions asked.

Yelp
I love bi rite! They have such a fun selection of produce, premade food and desserts, and snacks. You can also get fresh sandwiches made to order. I tried the lone mountain sandwich today which had chicken, avocado, cheese, pickled onions, peppers on amazing focaccia-- so good! It was around $15 and super filling. It was also prepared very quickly and the workers were super friendly. Such a great spot to pick up artisan goodies and unique food items. I love the big spoon roasters nut butters sold here!
google avatar

Es F.

Yelp
Yes- it's expensive for every day shopping, but I think Bi-Rite is the best place to try a few local gems like Rosalind sour dough, Dandelion chocolate...the variety of local purveyors is what makes Bi-Rite so special and an important part of the community. I stop by here on a way to a dinner party to grab a fresh loaf of Ube sourdough from Rize up- always a crowd pleaser! Plus the prices on local breads and chocolates are the same as the shops themselves.

Yelp
Having a BiRite Market is a definite plus (+) for the Russian Hill Neighborhood. A big step up from the Real Foods Company grocery store which it replaced. The prepared foods (grab and go salads and entrées are delicious!) are pricey! Since I used to venture to the Mission street store in the past before it got really overcrowded then switched to the Divisadero (Nopa) store later, I got to say I'm liking this space. It's the largest BiRite in the City! But I was hoping they would have a scoop counter for their ice cream. When the Nopa store stopped serving ice cream, it was a huge loss imho. When I stopped by on Sunday mid-afternoon, the store was not too busy. The cashiers were not overwhelmed and I found the person who helped me not friendly (at all). This is a sad start on the customer service front. I will, however, shop here again. I'll report back with how it goes.

Yelp
At Bi-Rite Market, there's produce available as we walk in. Then upon walking down the aisle, they have pastas, salads, and sandwiches prepared and packed. The variety looks so good. This is a well lit store with friendly staff here. Not too bad, I like it. Everything here is well lined up on the shelves, always a good thing. When looking for salads and sandwiches packed and ready to eat, come on in to Bi-Rite on Polk. Also, they do have trays of fresh made pasta ready for serving as lunch or dinner. Feel free to check it out.
google avatar

Aubany G.

Yelp
This location is by far the best of the Bi-Rite Markets in terms of size and conveniently located in walking distance of home. You never have to question quality when shopping here or any of the locations. I will say, the staff here seem to be much friendlier and just offering to help which was a nice touch. Each time I've been now, I don't have to squeeze past anyone or wait in any long lines at checkout. Plenty to rave about, but I do love that they hire ALL genders and ethnicities, and encourage non-binary language when interacting with their staff. Check it out for yourself and maybe grab a bite to eat from the grab-n-go section or deli and enjoy it at one of the cute little sidewalk tables they have out front.
google avatar

Hsiao C.

Yelp
Great location with wonderful floral and prepared foods option. A bit on the pricy side, but worth it for the quality and convenience.
google avatar

Yelp
I can spot a weekend trendy from a mile off. You know the bridge & tunnel crowd, that comes into the city to party on the weekends? Bless their hearts. Like aspiring actress Gregg says in the 1959 movie starring Joan Crawford- The Best Of Everything... "here's to clean cut men, and their dirty little minds". Well I've had Sarah Jessica Parker just about enough of it by Monday, being I grew up in the city, and all with my snobby parents; so I decided to go to Bi-Rite market today, in the trendy Russian Hill neighborhood and buy some Chi-Chi groceries. I'd teach you but I'd have to charge. Being single and always ready to mingle I grabbed the "to go" egg salad sandwhich, "to go" Beef & Cheese Empanadas, snap pea pasta salad, Wise Sons plain bagels, goat gouda from Central Coast Creamery, and eggs from Tomalas Bay, life is so boring... and a bottle of my favorite sparkling water Topo-Chico from Mexico. I like Mexico it's so Mexican. The egg salad sandwich from Bi-Rite Market is the star of the show, and truly mon préféré. Bon appétit!

Yelp
Well nice, clean, well-lit, and brand new-feeling market. All the produce looks perfect and a great selection of artisanal quality products available across all the product categories. Staff seem to be friendly but don't really engage with the customers in the store. Would come back to try out the food that you order at the counter.
google avatar

Celly W.

Yelp
Stopped by Saturday to grab a bite to eat from their deli. There were so many good options but i ended up choosing the lone mountain sandwich. Super filling and delicious, would definitely come back for this and to try out more of their menu items.

Yelp
Bi-Rite is a family owned business which originated in the Mission District and my childhood store as a kid. The Bi-Rite roof was the best hiding place when playing team hide and seek in the neighborhood . Since I went to high school across the street from Dolores Park we would come here often to grab lunch during open campus and go to Dolores Park and join the double lunch bunch (the cutting class crew) and layout on the grass and enjoy the day. As an adult this place has all the essential to make a drink run from Dolores Park. This San Francisco institution is expanding I am proud of it. The new Bi-Rite is located at the Polk Gulch. This Bi- Rite has an open space with lots of good drinks and food. Great selection of drinks. A seafood market and lots of fresh produce. They have my favorite new drink " You Guava Be Kidding Me". They also have those magical dessert jars. They also have Delfina Frozen pizza. Great new store . If you coming from North Beach to buy right at Bi- Rite on Broadway then turn right and you will approach The new Bi- Rite on Polk street in the Polk Gulch
google avatar

Yelp
Such a cute market even though it's so expensive. Got the mortadella sandwich & actually loved it. The pistachio pesto was layered on thick & super flavorful. It did take a minute for them to make the sandwich, even though we were there at an off time (4:30pm on a Monday.
google avatar

Jasmine J.

Yelp
This store is rather small. However, there are some gems inside. The fried chicken I purchased a few months ago was not all that great. However, the latkes I purchased yesterday are phenomenal. I put them in my air fryer for about 6 minutes, under aluminum foil coated with vegetable oil spray. I also paired the latkes with applesauce and sour cream from Whole Foods. When I tell you this combo is sinful! Before you all go crazy, I will warn you they are not cheap, as they are currently retailed at $14.99; but, if you can spare the funds, please treat yourself! Thank you, bi-rite. I will return for more.
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
Love this location of Bi-rite! Conveniently located on Polk Street, they have all the essentials + all the unique goods you would expect to find at Bi-rite. They have a great selection of produce, prepared food, and sandwiches. They also have pie (including their banana cream pie!) and ice cream cake available. The location is clean and fairly spacious with minimal wait times. Definitely on the pricier side, but I guess that's part of the Bi-rite brand.
google avatar

Helen M.

Yelp
Beautiful produce and fresh fruit- all on the expensive side. The bread section is overwhelming but great. Lastly, their sandwiches work easily for two people and are made to order. Service was excellent. The major problem is affordability for those with families or a limited income .
google avatar

amy T.

Yelp
It's set up beautifully. The produce is pretty and it's delicious. It's pricey. Everything at this market is a lot more than corner markets and than Whole Foods and Mollie Stones. Be prepared. I'm just glad they're in the neighborhood, but I won't be there that much.
google avatar

N A.

Yelp
They say Bi-Rite is the most expensive grocery store in San Francisco and they're not wrong. The standout items are the pre-made meals like spaghetti and lasagna. They don't have rotisserie chicken. They also didn't have raspberry ice cream which they do in their Divisadero location. I spent over a $100 on spaghetti and crab cakes and mostly snack items.
google avatar

Joshua f.

Yelp
Great staff. Very small and boutique but well-versed in food selections. I personally love going there for the Bayview Pasta.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
Great new market in Russian Hill! Go here for fresh sourced produce, meats/fish - end up leaving with a variety of curated goods. I cannot speak highly enough of their premade meals, desserts, and snacks. And don't forget to snag a tub of their homemade ice cream it is delish!
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
I told the people that this was a service animal, and they still insisted me go park my dog out front, I will not be going in this location again instead, I will spend money elsewhere where I'm not hassled over my dog and the options for food have more variety and the prices are less. Your reply was not very helpful and I'm sorry that your company has such a policy. If you're not aware you're in a dog friendly city, I don't know any other grocery store that has a problem with it so maybe this store should figure out what the other ones are doing right because people are spending a lot more money at those stores they can bring their dogs into!
google avatar

Soran M.

Yelp
Russian Hill/ Fort Mason is kind of a food desert, so this is a great walkable option. It's a little on the expensive side. - sandwiches (thumbs up) - fruit selection (expensive) (thumbs up) - artisan breads (thumbs up) - good prep foods options (thumbs up) - sandwich times and logistics (work in progress) If they can make the upstairs a coffee shop, it would be a home run. A place where customers can eat their sandwiches, enjoy some in store pasteries would be a great addition.
google avatar

Le S.

Yelp
So thrilled to have Bi-Rite in this part of the City! I love their prepared foods-- there is something for everyone. It's not inexpensive but the value is there considering the quality. It's a beautiful store and the service is great too. Welcome to Polk!
google avatar

Tessa D.

Yelp
Bi-Rite is a great edition to the beautiful Polk street in San Francisco!! Though the food/entrees are good they are pricey!! The store alone is very cute and fun! They have a lot of grocery options so if you are will to splurge a bit on groceries I recommend coming here!

Wendy M.

Yelp
Just remember they don't have the creamery here - no scoops, just the pints & sandwiches. Still good, just more ice cream for home.

Maryam N.

Yelp
They should call it buy wrong!!! Every single item in this store is at least three times the price you find somewhere else. I mean organic blueberries for $10? Common!

Jeffrey Y.

Yelp
Horrible service and very expensive s....,,,,,,Avoid. People open place and systems don't work and they did not give me change.

Alexis L.

Yelp
Came in for a sandwich and got a sandwich card for loyalty/rewards as well. Overall was a little expensive but good variety and decent sandwich.

Stefano S.

Yelp
Not really a grocery store. Frankly, disappointed. Previous grocery had a large butcher + fish, this place is a stop for tourists like Molinari's with higher-end products than a local corner store. Produce is GOOD, but you know, I wanted more meat + fish. Not a sandwich counter, which we have plenty of. That's only one star off. The second was a dog (non-service) was in the store sniffing and licking products. Drives me insane. Staff was oblivious.
google avatar

Johnny B.

Yelp
Expensive on average but you get what you pay for. Staff are very friendly. Produce quality is top notch and often locally sourced. Product selection is pretty good though you won't find as many brands as you would at other stores. I recommend getting a sandwich. I love the mortadella sandwich and the chocolate salted caramel cake in a jar.

Michael P.

Yelp
I think Bi-Rite is an excellent establishment, and I am very fond of their stores on 18th and on Divisadero. I am happy that Bi-Rite has a presence on Polk Street. The produce is beautiful, and prices in that section are comparable to what one finds at Mollie Stone's and Jeff Bezos's compost heap. I miss the butcher section at Real Foods, and the small fish counter is underwhelming for such a large space. The meat shrink-wrapped in plastic looks good, but... it's in plastic. As expected, most products in the store are well curated and beautifully displayed. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that I will do all of my shopping at Bi-Rite. Some staples are too cost prohibitive, even compared to other expensive markets we go to. I will definitely come here for produce, eggs, and a few other items (chocolate and other baked goods). On occasion, I will even buy pre-prepared food and shrink-wrapped meat. However, I will continue foraging at other markets to procure staples that used to be available at Real Foods, which was a convenient one-stop market.

julie M.

Yelp
Great service! Excellent bakery and produce! So glad to have them in the neighborhood!

Kristin B.

Yelp
I really miss the real foods that use to be here. Much better baked goods selection. Hoping it gets better and they start bringing in non in house items. I use to get a lot of baked goods at that location and was excited when they finally opened only to be disappointed.

Sf R.

Yelp
Most food says "organic " but not ! As I walk around to shop , nobody working as staff are not friendly at all and look little in a maze. It's not a friendly neighborhood market whatsoever. The pricing is outrageous as well ! So sad not to have a true neighborhood store!! In such a beautiful place they make the ambiance feel cold !!

Win S.

Yelp
Love this market for top ingredients, my parents really enjoy pre made food esp chicken pot pie, and so glad bi-rite is finally coming to Polk street. All I ask is you open soon.
