Superb customer service! I had a flat in the middle of working & needed the nearest bicycle repair. Walked in Bicycle Roots and the team is super friendly and knowledgeable. Decent rates but I wasn’t able to move forward on the repair at the moment but for sure will return on future tune ups. 👍 👍

I bought my Yuba cargo bike here in 2020 and continue to bring it back there, kinda out of my way, for tune-ups and repairs. The excellent service and communication, plus cool + chill personalities all around, make it a no-brainer. I’m never worried that they’re pushing unnecessary services on me—they always explain what needs to be done clearly and efficiently. And I trust that they’re making sure my bike is nice and safe. I’ve been other places, but the vibes are off. Not Bicycle Roots! Vibes are on point!

Debated whether or not to leave this review, but I think it’s important that people know the shady way this place does business. My gf took my bike in for a simple flat fix as a favor to me on a busy Friday so we could go for a nice long ride on Saturday morning. She was told to leave the bike, and that they’d let her know when it was ready. Instead, she received an estimate for $200 in repairs that the shop said the bike needed, and was told that they would not put a new tube in the tire unless we did the full suite of repairs because the bike was “unsafe to ride.” Guys, come on. If you want to let me know that you found issues with the bike, fine, run a diagnostic and let me know. But to essentially attempt to take the bike hostage unless we pay for repairs that, honestly, the bike doesn’t even need? Not cool. And not so different from a sleazy mechanic taking advantage of someone who doesn’t know cars when they bring theirs into a shop for a simple oil change. I’ve been riding in this city for over 20 years, and have never encountered such a brazen attempt at extortion from a bike shop. I had always heard from friends in the cycling community that Bicycle Roots has a reputation for ripping people off. I can now confirm this is the case first hand. Thankfully I was able to retrieve my bike the next day after an uncomfortable exchange with the staff. The gentleman at the counter eventually backed down, and said he could do the flat fix but that it wouldn’t last because the tires had “dry rot.” I told him “no thanks,” and that I’d prefer to take my business elsewhere. Which… I did. And guess what? No dry rot to speak of! Imagine how many people get told they need to spend $200 to make their bike “safe to ride” and then just… pay it? What an unethical business model. These guys are dishonest and overpriced. I’d recommend you take your business elsewhere like I did.

Visited Bicycle Roots with my older bike, hoping to get a necessary tune-up and repairs. They quoted me $450 for repairs, which seemed excessively high and 3x more than what I paid for the bike. When I requested a breakdown of essential versus non-essential repairs, the staff insisted that the bike was entirely unrideable and unsafe without undergoing all the proposed work. This did not align with my experience, as I regularly use my bike for long rides without issue. I decided to seek a second opinion and took my bike to Recycle a Bicycle. They provided a much more reasonable assessment, identifying only a small subset of the repairs as necessary, and they were willing to perform a tune-up. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Bicycle Roots to those with older bicycles seeking basic repair work or tune-ups. It seems they prefer to take an “all or nothing” approach for services and repairs or push towards the purchase of a new bike rather than addressing the customer's actual needs. The person at the front was polite at least, so giving an extra star for that!

Sure you can probably get better prices good mg online but… There is something to be said for CraftsMen who get their hands dirty and are personable. Went in for a tune up of my Fixed Gear and they did a Wonderful Job. Very Happy with their process of Evaluation and Recommendations for the work they are going to do. Not as happy with not getting a firm estimate on charges but that pales with their Professional Work. Will Whole Heartedly Recommend as a Neighborhood Bike Shop that we should Support. They got my Work Commuter Bike on the Road and She Runs Great.

I had a great experience here. Joe helped me fix a bike that used to belong to my uncle that was what I though unsalvagable. But he knows his stuff and got it looking amazing. I'm so happy with the service I received here and I can't recommend Bicycle Roots enough.

This bike shop is cute and full of everything you want to fill your cycling needs. The employees were helpful and knowledgeable about the products. They have an online store, too, which makes it easy to buy what you need and then pick up. Quick and fast. The downside to the online shop is the exorbitant cost of shipping. DEF plan to pick up in-store. They also have fabulous COVID precautions! Check their website and plan to schedule an appointment for everything. They've got hand sanitizer and a whole slew of ways to keep customers and employees safe. So this can totally be your safe, friendly, knowledgeable go-to neighborhood bike shop during the pandemic and long after.

Joe was able to restore my vintage Peugeot from the 80s using parts that other shops don't carry. Knowledgeable, fair, patient staff and a very mellow in-store playlist.

Have a bike that is well-used and much loved that I hadn't had looked at in many years. I finally snapped one of my brake cables and so it was no longer optional to have some work done. I knew a few other things were on their last legs. Had a really great experience - super transparent, clear, and detailed information was provided about what needed doing and the costs, and I was given the chance to approve everything beforehand. Excited to have a local shop that I trust and feel good about going to, and will definitely recommend this spot to others. Many thanks to Joe for the help and kindness.

Fantastic bike shop! From start to finish my experience was what you'd want. Very communicative and got my bike shipped quickly and safely to the West Coast. Looking forward to stopping in the next time I'm in the area. If you live near here, don't waste time! Get in there and check them out.

I was biking to the park when I got a flat tire. They were super prompt and friendly and fixed it that day, and also gave me a head's up that I should replace my other tire soon (but no pressure to get the service done there).

What a knowledgeable, amazing and health first-focused staff. I was so impressed with their COVID protocols, and want to thank them for everything they did to make sure that I felt safe. I am immunocompromised, and I have to mask indoors wherever the public is permitted. They not only helped me make a big purchase decision, but also provided a literal safe space for me to make that decision in. If you're reading into their superior biking education as excessive salesmanship, then you're missing the point. You end up leaving with more than you came with, even if you don't make the purchase. If what you need a fast flat tire fix, and Bicycle Roots is asking to schedule it (most likely in the same day), note that there are plenty of other stores in the area that can do that for you. But I'd rather have my maintenance done at Bicycle Roots, because they understand the art of bicycles and relationship-building.

This is a good shop with folks that can be trusted not to upsell you on unnecessary stuff, which has so often been my experience with NYC bike shops. Learning after the fact I absolutely did not need what I had been told/sold that I did. They're affordable and accommodating.

I found the manager rather rude and he made me extremely uncomfortable being inside his store.

Appreciate the folks at Bicycle Roots. I caught a flat tire (I randomly ran over the tiniest bit of a knife blade). I happened to be within walking distance of this shop so when I got there I noticed a sign on the door that said bike repairs are by appt only. Thankfully the person who greeted me at the door (I forget their name but I believe they had a beard) said that the mechanic could probably fit me in. They explained that I would need a new tire, gave me options (I upgraded to a sturdier, more durable tire that doesn't catch flats easily) and they even gave me the cost breakdown and total before doing any work. The service was top notch, prices were reasonable and I will most definitely be going back there for all my future repairs. Also they stuck to the mask indoors and I greatly appreciated that.

The man who helped my girlfriend and me (two women) was incredibly condescending. I don't know what it is about guys who are into bikes and know a lot about this one thing, who get off on choosing a career where they get to talk down to people paying them for help. As this guy was talking I could feel him realize he was being short and condescending with us (probably reflecting on a previous complaint) and watched him transform before my eyes into speaking to us instead like we were children, really slow as if we wouldn't be able to understand the big words coming out of his mouth. While we were there, we weren't rude nor did we act like we knew anything; we were humbly asking for help and advice. He told us we couldn't raise our bike stem, and ignored us when we suggested he change the stem to a longer one, and just kept saying over and over "that stem can't be raised"; we went to another store and they said absolutely they could change the stem and were super friendly about it, and even acknowledged it would help with lower back issues (which is why we want it raised). I teach college students, I know how to speak to people who don't know things and not make them feel stupid about it, and it takes minimal effort. He also put my girlfriend's bike seat back on too high, and ignored me when I said so. She tried it on outside, and it was comically high (and way above the clear dust mark line on the seat post), and we had to wait in line again to get back into the store to have the other gentleman who worked there lower it. The other gentleman was nice and normal. I do appreciate the covid protocols.

I absolutely love this shop. Every time I've gone there, the service has been amazing. They really know their stuff and are honest. They don't up-sell you and you don't find that often. Oh and the work is good, too.

Super courteous and attentive staff. I was a walk in, they are still good about giving folks space and having one person at the counter at a time. Plus awesome brand selection and tons of All City's!

They do pretty solid work here and the staff is pretty cool. I've gotten flat tire repairs and rim/tire replacements and all the little bells and whistles that go along with those procedures. The prices are pretty standard, I gather. They may be slightly higher than a spot I used to (unfortunately) frequent (damn flat tires) in SoHo, but they may have just felt bad for me because I came in so often with so many issues... *sigh* old bikes. Nevertheless, just ask for a pricelist before service begins if you are concerned. They're usually pretty good at communicating the prices to you as the work is in progress so that's definitely a plus. I will say, if you're having work done, just get it all taken care of in one session because I was quoted a $50 price tag to complete some work that I was having done that included just replacing the front wheel and tire as well as the back. I decided to hold out on the front wheel due to time and wanting to go to Happy Hour and pay Happy Hour prices (don't judge me). I came back in 2 weeks to get the front wheel taken care of and that $50 quote turned into a $70 price tag in the end. I assume it's charged to labor on a different day, so be mindful. Aside from service, they also sell bikes (pretty nice bikes) at some more reasonable prices than other places. They'll tune one up for a test ride for you while you wait for your repairs to finish. Just leave a credit card with them. Also they've got a decent selection of cycle suits and and accessories for you quasi professional and Tour de France riders-in-training.

I have been coming here for years. The people working here are incredibly straightforward and honest and seem to be equipped with a certain ESP that allows them to divine what I really want when even I wasn't aware yet -- and that's not to say that they are selling you on something the whole time, but they go above and beyond in terms of talking you through what you might need that day.

I went here to get my brake pads fixed and they were pretty backed up so I was expecting to pick it up the next day. I got a call a few hours later that the bike was ready early. The gentlemen who I spoke to (Kyle and Eric) were very professional and kind. It's a nice change from some of the bike shops where the people working there are exceptionally rude.

Go to Ride Brooklyn on Bergen instead for friendly service! I used a 3rd party service to have my bike shipped to Bicycle Roots from Texas when I moved to Bk. I called Bicycle Roots TWICE before I placed my order to ask them what info they needed from me before I booked the service and they seemed very chill and like it wasn't a huge deal and that I was going to be taken care of by them. Cool, I felt like I didn't have to stress about this one piece of my move. Fast forward to my first week in Bk. I get a call from a very angry man named Joe, berating me about how my bike "just showed up without any info" and how he had to call the bike shop that shipped my bike from to get my number from them. He was upset at me about not having a work order for the bike assembly. Uhhmmm... I'm sorry you guys didn't save my info that I called with on TWO separate occasions (WEEKS in advance)? I explained the situation and he rudely said he "guess" he'd have to find the time to take care of it. OKAY, thanks dude. What a warm welcome to the neighborhood. Such a shame -- I was so excited when I saw that I was moving to a neighborhood with a bike shop nearby because I'd rather support local shops than purchase everything online. I picked up my bike, paid them the last $50 I will ever spend in that store, and left. To be fair, every other staff member I met was super friendly, so I'll give them 2 stars for that. However, my bike seat was assembled weirdly. I went a mile away to Ride Brooklyn on Bergen to get it fixed, which is where I am now a loyal customer.

Efficient and friendly. Came in with a tire issue and they were able to suss out the problem right away and give me a cost estimate before beginning to work on my bike. Hopefully won't have to be back for any repairs too soon but will definitely return whenever my bike needs some TLC. Thanks to employee Sam for his help!

I understand due to Covid I couldn't visit the store but when they said ask for a request thru email about price range and everything else I wouldn't understand why answer with a smart ass response I'm a first time bike buyer for my kids and my Lady they ask for price range I gave it to them they said they don't have that's fine if it would've ended there but then after that sense they put WE DONT SELL NEW BIKES NOT USED BIKES as if I wanted to buy a used bike I'm not sure what was going on but the arrogance and me not knowing bicycle prices I would understand the 1st response but hey it's whatever

I purchased my first bike here a few weeks ago and had a great experience! Since the shop was open by appointment only due to the pandemic, I made an appointment online after consulting with a staff member about their inventory. I was specifically interested in a hybrid bike than was under $600. Thankfully there were a few in stock as many other businesses were sold out due to the demand. When I came to the store the bike was set up and ready for a test drive. Nooga was very helpful in explaining the bike functions and the mechanic quickly installed a bell and addressed an issue I had. I felt very comfortable visiting as the shop has clear protocol to make sure I was able to social distance. I've been riding my bike everyday and would definitely stop in for any repairs as this seems like a business with integrity.

They are so rude and it's so cliche ; overrated and sexist for 2020 ! Can you guys play a more creative role ? Bicycle ; mechanics ; make figure ; so rude ; OMG you so straight forward Wow You say things without ceremony WOW the only business that can do that ; with no fear of losing costumers , just look at you your COVID memo ! DUH Go anywhere but there ! Just because the world has changed and we are tired of those cliche roles being played over and over again ! Rudeness and bikes mechanics don't need to go together ! Super grateful for this awesome neighborhood bike shop. The super patient, knowledgable staff helped me find a good quality helmet quickly, and they made time to help me get a basket on my bike even though they're swamped due to COVID stuff. So many good vibes in this store -- I'll definitely be returning in the future to check out their other gear!

Yay! Crown Heights finally has an affordable and good bike shop! I've found the employees very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. While there are cheaper bike shops in Brooklyn none of them were around the corner from me. I've had them to build me a new rear wheel which really both looks great and rides wonderfully. They also have done more routine stuff such as tune-ups and selling me tires and tubes. I will say that you should stay away from their bulk tubes since two of the ones I bought had manufacturing defects and the others went flat really quickly. Also, for some reason one of the mechanics wanted to replace my slick tires with heavy Gatorskins. I know people love the Gatorskins but such heavy tires don't belong on a light weight road bike in my opinion. Pros + Affordable + Friendly and knowledgeable staff + Great quality work + Convenient if you live in the area Cons - Poor quality bulk tubes - They just want to put Gatorskins on every bike

You have to make a appointment and pay for it. I bought my bike from roots bike shop in April. Where is the warranty? I didn't even get my 1st adjustment that was owed to me when I bought the bike. A bunch of weirdos who trying to make a extra buck. Go to Roy's bike shop. There service is the best and you don't have to wait or pay for a appointment

Great little bike shop, awesome staff very knowledgeable and patient. Nogga, one of the staff members help my daughter & I in getting her first adult bike entry level, he was very helpful. When it comes to adjusting and trying out the bikes you picked out to test drive he is the man, he will also help you add anything to the bike like fenders, lights, kickstands, etc. I highly recommend this shop, had a great experience here. We will return & recommend

Can't recommend Bicycle Roots enough! They have a well-informed staff that are willing to take the extra time to walk customers through all the options across bikes, accessories, repairs, and more. They are very quick with their repairs, are very detailed in what they are doing and why, and from my perspective, it feels like the rates are fair for the value of the service. COVID-specific: They have put together a very organize and safe process for service appointments during the current situation. You make an appointment, and only one customer is in the store at a time. They get the proper details from you in advance to avoid unnecessary movements, and it doesn't come with any sacrifice to speed of service. Keep doing what you're doing!

These guys are great I came in for air , not only did they assist me but helped me choose the right lights and lock. Nehama was insightful and helpful. Will definitely be returning for all my bike needs and wants.

Parts staff aren't the most communicative customer friendly people but the front desk sales person is knowledgeable and super helpful. This location has many bikes on sale including collapsible folding bikes. Accessories range from clothing to helmets, locks and more specialized items. The sales room has air conditioning. The store is NOT ADA accessible as there is one step on the outside and another 5 inside with parts and service on the upper level.

Good to support a neighborhood bike store. They always are available and they answer your questions in a unpretentious way. Every one is very knowledgeable and there is a casual atmosphere that almost wishes you can stay there longer. Would make for an awesome cafe in the back if you asked me. I only wished they carried more bikes however that may be due to space contraints.

Bought a new bike here last week and couldn't be happier with the bike and service at Bicycle Roots. the bike was setup and ready to test ride when i arrived and needed no immediate adjustments. i found the staff to be knowledgeable and friendly and even though i live a few miles away, will be back in the future.

After having a bad experience at Fulton Bikes with laxedazical, stuck up, and rude employees. You know the people that open bike shops who don't know their products or anything about biking, that charge to much and won't cut you deals if you buy $120 tires, they won't give you a discount on putting them on either, you're just money to them. Bicycle Roots is more the hipster type bike shop which is awesome. These guys are cycling experts and classy. They care and are very passionate about their job. This store sells a lot of high end products like $350 biking backpacks but they also sell affordable stuff. They have a large selection of baskets and racks. They sell shoes, lights, locks, and a bunch of other stuff too. Very positive energy here. The employees weren't down my throat trying to sell me stuff like other bike shops. They were just like if you need any help let me know in a sincere voice. Not overly "fake nice" like some bike shops. Love this shop and will be back. I love going into a shop with employees that are like me not employees that think they are better then you because they think they know more about bikes or think they are so cool.

These people are great. I've taken my bike to a few other places locally and they take longer, are less friendly, and cost more than this place. Their prices are really reasonable and they'll patiently explain to you what's going on with your bike without making you feel like a moron, which is cool.

These guys have been really great, you can tell that they are excited about bikes and want yours to function the best it can. I brought mine in at 6 pm on some weekday and they were able to make some needed adjustments after a crash, noticed a small problem with the tire that I didn't catch, warranteed me the tire for a new one (I had bought it there a week or 2 prior, the problem was with the manufacturer), and put the new one on. All for less than $30 and within and hour (and they were busy). I know many serious cyclists who recommend this place within their circles. Cool people who give a sh!t and don't over charge you. That's all you really need right?

They did a fine job replacing my breaks, but were generally a little standoffish when I asked about some basic maintenance questions. They also erroneously suggested that it would be impossible to find replacement pads for my vintage calipers. I should have asked for the breaks back, but it also would have been ideal for them to ask me if I wanted to hold onto them. This place will do if you're totally hands off with your bike maintenance and just want a place to make things work, but if you're interested in anything more out of a bike shop, there are better spots.

They fixed my flat with no questions asked super quick. Very nice people and they were open on a Sunday which it seems is rare with bikes shops! Thank you!

These guys are the best! I was looking for a reliable bike for over a year and waiting on the right color before committing to buy. I decided enough was enough and went in to talk to them about the perfect bike. Nogga (I believe that's how his name is spelt) helped me out and he was amazing! I spent a little more than I anticipated, but by choice. He was great at offering alternative options to some of the more expensive accessories, but felt like I made all the right purchases to have a safe and secure bike. I recommend these guys for any purchases/repairs as they are super friendly and informative. I'm super happy about my purchase and look forward to stopping by for any future needs! Thanks again!

Horrible customer service. You'd think you'd be treated with some decency after years of being a loyal cuatomer and spending a ton of money in their store. Quite the opposite - rude behavior, unnecessarily long wait times, and a total lack of consistency between what each employee says to you. Every single time. And when you challenge them on hidden fees they berate you and ask you not to return? Highly recommend you go elsewhere.

This place is fantastic. They just moved to this new location and I was very impressed. They helped us out with bikes for our twin 7 year olds and could not have been nicer or more helpful. Very safe. Full COVID precautions. All around great experience.

I'm only giving 2 stars because one of the guys did try to help me but the repair guy funny looking dude with black hair was a lazy bum I got there before a few guys and he took care of them before me then complain that he might not have time to fix my flat even after I said I'm buying new tires from the store never getting my business again.

I've been going to Bicycle Roots for many years. Their customer service is fantastic. They've always been open and honest and fair. They have knowledgeable staff, they call when things are ready or, if the cost will be more than the original quote, they call first so you can choose whether or not to accept the charge. Highly recommend.

I've brought my bike to Bicycle Roots several times over the past couple years for minor issues (sticky brakes, wheel alignment slightly off), and each time the mechanics have been friendly and fixed my bike for free, even though I expected (and was fine) to pay a fee. This spring, I took my bike to them for a larger overhaul (including an overall tune-up, new tires/tubes, new brake shoes, etc), and they were so helpful. Sam talked me through all my options for more and less costly solutions, and when I picked up my bike (which was ready within the time frame they gave me for it), it rode like a dream. So happy to pay these folks for their great service, especially after all the years of small and surprising freebie assistance.

I love this place! They're so friendly and helpful, unlike so many bike shops where the staff are standoffish and act like they're too cool. The staff here are knowledgeable and helped us pick the right kids seat for our bike, and it's working great for us.

I've been avoiding fixing my bicycle after an unfortunate run-in with another bicycle shop in the area involving the wrong parts and coming within an inch of needing to be hospitalized--I have a hard time trusting bicycle shops to put the same care into my bicycle as I would so when something bigger than I feel comfortable fixing happens. Some friends recommended this place but I was broke and then winter came and so I kept putting it off. Finally took it in last weekend and Joe was great. The other mechanics saw that I had a vintage bicycle and called him over since they knew he was the specialist in older bicycles and he was so knowledgable. Most mechanics seem to know nothing about vintage bicycles but don't know they know nothing and try to fix it like a newer bike, which is how my bicycle ended up in such bad shape--beyond the one wrong part that cause my crash, I had accumulated a whole bunch of parts that were wrong and and only kind of worked, resulting in my bicycle running really poorly. I was ready to put a chunk of money into replacing a whole bunch of bad/wrong parts and getting it in good condition once and for all. Joe knew all the places to get my parts, most of which had to be special ordered because it's a vintage bicycle, and didn't try to steer me to get ill suited parts just because they had them in stock. He was familiar with all the potential quirks of my bicycle, and knowledgable enough about the make and year of my bike and it's parts to find and fix even the quirks of my bike that I forgot to tell him about, including some long term problems that other mechanics have told me we're not possible to fix. He even fixed the downtube shifters that at least three previous mechanics had told me were irreparable and needed to be replaced with a really rare and expensive part (I was even ready to pay for the new part and he said he could just fix it) Really excited to have found a bicycle mechanic I can trust and who has clearly taken the time and care to get to know my bicycle!

Rude, incompetent, and overpriced. Avoid if you can. There are better option in the neighborhood with owners and technicians who treat customers like patrons, not annoyances. I like to support neighborhood businesses and I've spent a few hundred dollars here for the past two years. But after today, I'm completely over it. Here are the details: I went in for my web-scheduled 12 pm appointment after paying a $35 upfront non-refundable consultation fee. When I tried to check in, I was treated disrespectfully at the door by the mechanic who was standing outside. Then I was treated rudely on the phone while "checking in" as told. I eventually told the phone attendant that they could keep the $35 fee and that I would be taking my business elsewhere from now on. Bicycle roots? they seem more like bicycle parasites to me. HARD PASS.

I highly suggest this bike shop. They are extremely communicative, reliable and fast in service. I brought in my heavily used bike and they made it feel new. These are tough times and we need to support our local businesses. They are fair in pricing and excellent in service.

Bought a all city big block from here and everyone was extremely helpful. The staff were also great salesmen may i add, they pointed out exactly what I needed for a great price with humble friendly assistance. Definitely recommend this place to anyone that rides or wants to get into riding!

Great service and great people. Like everyone they are having such a hard time with COVID due to high demand and it being harder to get the parts, but they are really doing an amazing job given the circumstances. no reason to go anywhere else in the area.

Needed to get my newly purchased used bike tuned up, this place was closest and had the best reviews, so I swung by to check them out. The place is clean, staff super friendly and helpful, honest, and affordable. These guys definitely seem passionate about what they do and don't try to steal your money. Will def be taking my bike back here for future repairs.
