"Big A is known for its “gourmet” root beer, which stars in refillable root beer floats (some have described the experience as “bathing in vanilla”). It’s also got a cute car-hop setup, complete with “deluxe” burgers and “county fair” style corn dogs." - Becky Duffett

Super delicious. We ordered four burgers, two fries and two large root beers. Large portions. Very tasty. Even the bread wasn’t too soft and wasn’t too hard, all ingredients in harmony. They did put cheese on our mushroom burger (we asked for no cheese) but they took care of it and made us another one without cheese!! Service was awesome and the whole drive up experience. Wish we had one of these places where we live. Thank you Big A Rootbeer!

So I’m super bummed! My little guy wanted Big As, we hadn’t been there in months but used to love going! I ordered by calling and told the girl I was in the car at the end. My total was over $70 so I went inside and was told the prices went up which is whatever. We’re sitting in the car waiting for food and noticed 35 minutes had gone by. Went inside and was told they had been calling my name. Bring food to car and shakes were so melted the dripped all over me and my car. I went inside and the girl refunded my shakes. So I went back to car Then I went to grab food out of bag and my daughters blt fell everywhere because it was put in upside down. Went home out of frustration where I saw my daughters bacon was burnt, and my sons plain burger had everything on it and the bun was so soggy it was flipping over. Oh and my onion rings had batter still in some of them. I’m very disappointed and won’t be returning

First time here because we were visiting my nephew on graduation day and it didn't disappoint. I got a jalapeno cheese burger and it was scrumptious. And also garlic fries and tasted better than stadium fries 😋. I would recommend and go back there again next time we visit for.sure. plus the workers were nice they gave my nieces and lil nephew some yummy gummies 💟 thank you 💕 6-11-22

These folks are clearly struggling... it used to be a pretty good burger joint. But maaaaan has it slid downhill quick... last time or so we were here it was...ok...at best.... today the burgers taste like cardboard, the fries are so salty I literally can't eat them (and I usually ADD salt to fries) and when I go to add ketchup I find they're only giving you HALF a patty!! They wrapped it up in the paper to face you. For the prices they charge now you would think the LEAST you would get was what you paid for... even if it's not very good.. I've had better burgers at McDonalds. Do yourself a favor and go to Pine St.

I have been going to Big A since it was A&W many years ago. It has always been a place that consistently served fresh and wonderful comfort food. But.....today something was really off. We all know that when we eat here that it's going to cost a little more and usually we're fine with that because the food is so good. I don't know if the cook called in sick today or maybe something else was going on but the food (which was $45 for 2 people) was so soggy and terrible that neither of us could eat it. I hoping this will be only a one time experience.

I've always loved Big A. It's a big part of Grass Valley culture, it's been there for years. I had a Chicago dog, with all the fixings, onions, mustard, pickles and tomatoes which are fresh and wonderful in Grass Valley. My husband had a bacon cheeseburger which was fantastic as usual, we shared a basket of onion rings which are dipped in a tempura type of batter so they're crunchy and greasy and just perfect.

Was our first time here and thought we would try it. Young man at the register taking our order was not helpful whatsoever and zero personality. Finally got thru the order and waited for our food. We are giving a 2 star rating only because the rootbeer was very tasty and the burgers were good. Ordered the fried chicken sand as well. It had 2 chicken tenders about 3 inches long on a huge bun. This cost $10.89. Even just 1 more tender would have helped. Had to go back up to the counter to get fries. Young lady at the counter seemed confused when I asked for them saying do you want them before your burgers. I replied we already had the burgers. She brought the 2 orders of fries that we ordered and they were cold. Went back to the counter to complain. A second young man said they could remake the fries, but did not address the “fried chicken” sandwich at all when I told him it was unacceptable. We waited another 10 minutes watching other orders come and go. First young man at the register saw us still waiting and asked if we got our fries. I just shook my head. My family walked out and as I was getting up to leave they finally brought fries but only one order. I left and will definitely NOT be back.

We went in for root beer floats, and what a surprise when they arrived. I had a medium, which was larger than expected, but also includes free refills! Big A has always been a bit on the spendy side, but you get good food and the portions are generous. I just wish they would fix the curbside ordering menu.

Yelp
Ordered the DOUBLE BACON DELUXE BURGER and was blown away by the FLAVOR and SIZE. Order this burger if you have a BIG appetite! Also ordered the ROOT BEER which came in a CHILLED GLASS MUG! Tasted AMAZING! Service was GREAT! They even walked by and asked if I wanted a refill on my root beer! Cool diner atmosphere with great food. Highly recommend if you are in the area!

Yelp
Fun little old school Drive in, where you can dine indoors (cold ac) or dine in your car... My brother loves coming here so he brought us to grab a burger and some fried goodness. Looking at the menu, lots of options to pick from and decently priced. I had the Mushroom Cheeseburger and while it was cooked just the way I like it, the burger wasn't seasoned at all so it was bland. I did try my wife's Bacon Deluxe Cheeseburger and hers was much better than mine. We also shared a basket of tots and curly fries and those were solid! I also had to try their draft root beer served in a chilled mug. I was told there was free refills but I didn't need it. Great root beer flavor and not as carbonated as other fountain/canned soft drinks. Staff was great at the register and bringing us our food, but we did encounter one of the workers getting scolded/talked to by another employee and walking out. Not sure what happened, but hopefully they figured it out. We were also dealing with a lot of flies buzzing around food and constantly had to shoot them away.

Yelp
Every time we go to Big A Rootbeer Drive In we know we will have a wonderful meal. Fantastic food and love the cool old time drive in feel to the place!

Yelp
I feel like I lost a good friend tonight. The wife and I decided to go to Big As root beer drive in. I have been going there for over 20 years. Tonight was a total disaster. June 11,2024 @ 510 pm. You need to fire this crew , especially the young girl. The service was absolutely terrible. There were literally 5 people working and all were just chatting and laughing like it was a social reunion. The table was dirty, I asked it to be clean, the root beer was A&W from a 2 liter bottle ( they said they were out of concentrate syrup) Our order sat on the cooks counter for about 5 minutes so I finally asked for a refill on my root beer and also if that was our order on the cooks counter. She said " oh that is your order, do you want it now" .....uhhhh yea. She literally put it on a tray and slid it to me like I had done something wrong. The food was now cold and wasn't that good anyway. This is exactly why I don't tip when I pay.....I DON'T TIP BAD SERVICE AND MEDIOCRE FOOD. You lost a good costumer Big As. I will never recommend you or return again.

Austyn L.

Yelp
Ordered via phone. Told x amount of time. I arrived 5 mins after the estimated time completion which was average of 20 mins. Typical waiting period. Arrived to pay and tipped. Food wasn't ready. No biggy. Stood aside for 10-15 mins as I'm watching them do their thing. All chatting and laughing - awesome cause I've worked the food industry for years. Notice them tagging orders. Something tells me my meal is ready but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt cause I'm thinking they're prepping the other meal. Now these are both salads. See them laughing and joking look at the tickets even looking, tying and tagging my meal. All these time has gone. I go up and ask if the food is ready. To my surprise the boxes they were bagging and kept picking up setting down was mine. Tell them I've been waiting for long. Not even an apology. I'm irritated so I walk out. Get home. Unbox and my Chinese salad has no dressing. Already frustrated, have to drive back. The guy tells me the salad doesn't have and the chicken most likely has the dressing. I've ordered this meal more times I can count on my hands. Goes back and yep...it comes with it. Again no apology or anything. They're giggling, not focusing on the business - I'm all for a good time in a business but pay close attention to your guest. The ones too who are tipping too. Honestly I'm done with the place. The meal wasn't great tasting cause my lettuce was warm from sitting under the chicken. Seems like some employees do the bare minimum yet ask for these higher wages and tips (speaking too from what is noticed all through out). Don't recommend this joint any longer. Use to be a favorite. Don't get me wrong. The food is amazing and I know the cooks bust hard to bring out quality food...it's the ones taking order and serving/bagging food that makes it mediocre. So my negative review is to those running the food to the guest, not the cooks

Troy H.

Yelp
Fabulous burgers, maybe the best in town. Great shakes. Wish they would stop using styrofoam. I tend to avoid this joint because of the styrofoam...

Kristin M.

Yelp
We came here after visiting empire mine, it's only a 6 minute drive away. We came here on a Saturday afternoon around 3-4. The indoor dining is pretty small, maybe 8-10 tables/booths, but this place is a drive in so, if you really want to eat indoors you can eat in your car! We opted to sit and eat outside at the picnic tables. Staff is very nice and quick. They bring out orders to you instead of just calling orders out, which is a nice touch. They accidentally made a second order of fries for us, they called it out and we replied saying we had already got our fries, instead of taking the fries back, the waitress just gave us a second order of fries for free. That was super kind of them! I got a San Francisco burger, which had caramelized onions and mushroom with Swiss cheese. It was SUPER good. Their fries were also really good! They come seasoned, not just the standard salt. We also got their mocha rocket shake and root beer float. They make their root beer in house and you can tell. Their root beer is much more smooth and not overwhelmingly sweet. I'm not much of a root beer float person, but I'll happily get their root beer float every time we come here! Will definitely be coming back next time we're in the grass valley area!

Yelp
Firstly, don't get me wrong. The food here is great. I love the deluxe bacon cheeseburgers and curly fries especially. It's always hot and fresh. The cook's definitely deserve a raise for the amount of crap they probably have to endure with what a raging mean girl the manager Lily is. I actually was so upset I felt myself tearing up during my meal because I couldn't believe how cruel a manager could be towards customers. The staff here seems like they walk on eggshells with their tail between their legs bc of her hostility. I've been here before, I know that this place is capable of making a great shake. So I ask the cashier if it's possible to get an oreo shake thick like old fashioned style. Sure he says. When Lily made and brought the shake out to our table it was literally like you took milk and blended in oreos. Very watery with no thickness whatsoever. It almost felt like a joke. So my mother asked if it's possible to get another shake since this one was pretty bad. We don't usually like to ask but it wasn't great. So she quickly got an attitude, said no and continued to actually argue with my mother. She refused to make another one and just said she'll give us a refund. We asked if we could please just have another shake to enjoy with the burger and she just got short with us saying she already made it and we didn't like it. Meanwhile we're watching another staff member make a good looking shake for someone else perfectly fine. She had so much attitude towards us for no reason. We told her we did not want the refund, just a shake. She made it clear that she would not remake it & started refunding us even though that's not what we wanted. Looking back, at this point we should've just asked to refund the entire order and took our business elsewhere but we didn't because we were craving this place specifically. So we sat back down and when the food was ready, Lily just throws our order onto the counter and shouts my husbands name but with everyone else she was bringing their order out to their table. We notice this so we ask to speak to a manager or the owner and she continues to tell us she was the manager which is so unbelievable they would place her in this position being responsible for customer service with the level of disrespect she has towards us. After speaking to her that second time (& her probably realizing that she could get in trouble over her behavior) mid-meal she then goes on to make a shake and say it's on the house. I'm sorry but it's a little too late for that now. She gave us such a hard time and we were treated horribly, the damage was done. All I could think about while I was eating was how I couldn't wait to get out of there. I loved this place dearly but this mistreatment has caused me to NEVER return to this establishment again no matter how much I like the food. The food can be 10/10 but customer service is everything and can make or break a place & that is the ONLY reason I won't be coming back.

Yelp
Great burger, onion rings and fries. Root Beer Floats are a must have. Give it a try if you are in the area.

Jack C.

Yelp
Freaking awesome burgers! I had the jalapeño burger and a root beer in a frozen mug. Great!!

Sonia C.

Yelp
We were treated to lunch for work from this restaurant. Everyone was raving about how good it was. I was tempted to get a root beer float but, it was an order being picked up and I wasn't sure when I'd be able to start my lunch to eat it. I'm not a fan of root beer but good root beer made by the restaurant and ice cream? I'll make an exception for. I had the BBQ bacon burger and it was so good. The bacon was huge and cooked perfectly not too crispy or too soft. The onion strings on it were yummy and didn't have an overpowering flavor. Now the garlic pesto fries...they were awesome. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and they were thicker fries, which hold up better to the flavoring or its oil. The garlic flavor wasn't too much like other garlic fries, it was good and there weren't clumps of garlic with the pesto and the pesto was good too. It's probably best to eat these fries right away because the oil from the pesto or garlic can make them somewhat soggy. But the pesto garlic fries were delicious and so were a coworkers curly fries.

Ryan C.

Yelp
Hate to have to say this. But this place has gone downhill big time in the past few years. Used to be packed constantly. Just went in on a Saturday at noon and it was a ghost town. Why? Maybe it's the ten dollar basic burger that I ordered that tasted and looked like something I could get from Carl's Jr? I dunno, maybe I just expect a little more than a frozen patty on a squashed sesame seed bun, the spine of a head of iceberg lettuce, and an unripe tomato for ten bucks. This place used to be solid for how pricey they were, mainly because they'd actually FEED you. Just walked away hungry and disappointed after nearly ten years of patronage. Won't be back.

Gina C.

Yelp
Dry burger and cold fries. Would not recommend, and prices are not value at all. Just OK

Lee B.

Yelp
Great food awesome burger and the milkshake was awesome! Had the Sonora Burger, and a strawberry milkshake.

Dennis S.

Yelp
It's okay. Let's start with 5 stars and go from there. Take a star off for the root beer. -1 They make their own. It's not very good. I've had better. -1 star Outdoor speakers are all broken. -1 star No parking. -1 star Freezer broken -1 star I got the tots and SF burger. It was good. That's pretty much the only reason it got 2 stars. +2 star

Kelley T.

Yelp
First time here - we will definitely be back. We got the Grilled Chicken, which was deliciously seasoned, bun was fresh, with the right amount of sauce/lettuce and the Deluxe Burger with cheese, grilled nicely and super tasty! We got the homemade root beer and a chocolate malt - both were very tasty. We shared a small fries, which was plenty for us. Staff is friendly and helpful. Place is super clean and fun inside!

Isaac H.

Yelp
I paid $70 for this food and it literally was just two hamburgers. Didn't come with french fries. I did get the root beer that's supposed to be world famous and it's not it just taste like mug root beer. It is absolutely the worst deal that you can get in their food isn't even good. I can get a better burger McDonald's or make one better blindfolded I recommend not eating here. I recommend going somewhere else who actually doesn't believe in ripping off their customers.

Chris F.

Yelp
We just moved to the area so it was our first time here. We had the bacon cheeseburger, tots, onion rings, and root beer. Everything was delicious and the staff was super friendly. My husband also got a large root beer float and it was HUGE! You definitely need to try the root beer - they make it themselves and it's so much better than store-bought root beer! We'll be adding Big A to our favorites list and will definitely be back. :)

Denise K.

Yelp
This place is off the off Amazing The best BLT I have ever had , staff are so nice ! Outside dive in eat!

Tommy I.

Yelp
I would say my experience at this restaurant was quite pleasant. Not only was the food fantastic but the service of these two handsome gentlemen. With their tan skin and dark hair it was almost impossible to take my eyes of them. During a huge rush their charismatic features allowed myself to NOT mind waiting or become impatient at all! The one with curly hair was so charming and respectful. Almost as tasty as my food! As a closeted man I will certainly be coming here more often. As I am craving the sight of these beautiful chocolate men. Kudos to the Big A owner for choosing the most exquisite team. Feasting on my food was just as good staring at these lovely workers. Big A is the place to go for! Love the food and the items that catch my eye.

Shaun G.

Yelp
My son loves going here. Likes the varied hamburger options and homemade unlimited refill root beer.

Mikah M.

Yelp
Came here on 12/26 and had great service. There were two staff up front hustling through the ongoing customers. It seemed slow inside but they were getting non stop calls for orders and outside orders I realized. Our food took about 8 min to get to our table which wasn't bad. We all ordered root beer and I later found out they have Diet root beer! I ended up changing it out and it literally tasted the same...SO GOOD! Definitely suggest ordering it because it still has the same great taste. We ordered burgers and fries and some onion rings which were not greasy thank goodness. Our burgers had thick Patty's and were cooked with great taste. We ordered a meat patty for our dog and they accommodated that for us. I've been on and off coming here because it's out of town but always a great stop for us! Definitely give it a try and order a root beer float! I regretted not getting that ha!

Jamie K.

Yelp
The food was great. Quick service. A little pricey but that's everything now. Will definitely return when in the area. Sorry forgot pictures. Chili was amazing.

Charles H.

Yelp
Took the fam here.... Very disorganized teen's running the place. My order was missing food when asked about the chicken sandwich that was missing. A young man replied ya one second with snobby look on his face. Throwing the chicken sandwich on the corner and no apology. The place also needs a make over very greasy and old paint and musky smell.

Jay W.

Yelp
Love this simple hamburger place. Reminds me of hamburger stands before all the chains ran them out of business. Have never had anything bad but not a fan of the fries. Just not crispy enough. The servers are always so kind.

Wade T.

Yelp
Perfect pit stop. Burgers, shakes, salads....something for everyone. In car or picknic tables. Nice team, fast fresh and good!

Allen H.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best burger I have ever encountered... Being a fluffy American human, I have devoured my fair share. It would take quite a bit to dethrone them. Not all flash and sizzle but flavor with a dash of nostalgia makes it special.

Michele S.

Yelp
The homemade root beer is 5 stars. The burgers and sandwiches are about a 4. Was really disappointed the one time I got a specialty salad but hey it's a burger place.

Peace A.

Yelp
I go to Big A's because the manager there, Lily, is the sweetest loveliest young lady and I'm always treated well by her and her staff!

Stevi C.

Yelp
Really bad. I've worked 13 years in food service and I can overlook some things but dang this was bad. Firstly, the kids were wiping their faces with towels and that's a big no no because someone can pick up that same towel to clean with. Idk what's up with Nevada countys health department but their standards are slack compared to the county I worked for. Second was seeing someone run their hand through their hair where they were prepping food, and then touching the food. Just some common sense things. Now onto the food, my friends chicken was well over cooked and dry, but her fries looked like she had the bottom of the bag from the freezer, the size of a tip of a finger. That's not the worst of it, my burger looked like it was recooked from a different time. Or microwaved. The cheese was cooked off to the point it was hard and cracklely at the edge of the burger and the burger itself was burnt and dry. Now from my experience in good service it even looked like the bun had been reheated with the burger, like when you microwave your fast food burger. One piece of bacon was cooked ok the other piece was burnt on the edges and chewy in the middle. Then on to my sweet potato fries looked like they were old or had freezer burn. Super disappointing, but the hygiene issues with touching your hair and wiping your sweat is to much. The food wasn't tolerable and I'm not someone who likes to make a fuss it takes a lot for me to do so. My friend has a piece of hair in her lettuce too. The practices really need work hope the manager sees this.

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Great GIGANTIC burgers and delicious onion rings. What's not to love? Prices are a bit high, but given the current cost of food and the generous portions, it's worth it. Add to that the very friendly employees, and it's a winner.

Edgar M.

Yelp
Moved to Grass Valley in the past year and found this jewel in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Big-A has a youthful energy, ample tasty portions with a mom-&-pop drive-in vibe.

Wes T.

Yelp
Like the drive in restaurants of yore, this place does what you expect it to do: have people being you food in your car. Great burger, good shakes. The inside experience is alright, too.

Kaltonowisk J.

Yelp
Food is ok I ordered the fried chicken Sandwich and it was preorder chicken strip , I thought they would be using fresh chicken or a chicken breast at least because of the way it looked from the outside and the name on the building , also ordered sweet potato Fries which was very good , also the staff that brings the food was Friendly probably want go back a little pricey to me

Rudy M.

Yelp
Food is great. Love the buyers and shakes. Great staff- feels like a good ole diner with good food and staff. We go often.

Will F.

Yelp
Holy cow!!! Sooooooo. Gooooooooood. We had burgers and their awesome fries. We had root beer floats. We had hotdogs. We ate in our truck and had a carhop being the food. The whole thing was awesome! Just a bit $$$, but still worth it.

Jody A.

Yelp
What an awesome treat.. especially these days!!! Order from your car, they make it fresh and bring it to you. The root beer will not disappoint!! Free refills. A small fry will feed 2 people. The burgers are char broiled and have a crunch to them. It was delicious. Looking forward to going back to try the root beer float!!! Your wasteline can expand very easily here because it's so good!! All employees that we say were wearing a mask.

Rocky S.

Yelp
This place doesn't disappoint! Great root beer and burgers! I had the philly as well. So huge that I had to save half for later. Closed on Sunday and Monday. Share the fries - there will be plenty of them to go around for a medium size for two people. I would say it's worth the price.

Kris S.

Yelp
Pros: Girl at the counter was very nice. Cons: I ordered a burger with green chillies on it. I did not taste them at all. If I am gonna pay an up-charge I want to taste what I ordered and am paying for.

Bob H.

Yelp
The milkshakes and root beer floats are amazing! And the root beer is made on site which is pretty neat. Cool location too with the classic drive in feel. The only thing is, I really don't like their burgers. They're inconsistent and too expensive for the quality you receive. By all means go here for a dessert! But maybe head up the road to Pine Street Burgers if you're looking for a burger.

Robert L.

Yelp
Absolutely the best double bacon cheeseburger! Great service...but pricey... Double bacon cheeseburger, cut in half... Totally share with the better half Small fries Small coke Small root beer float, with tip... $25

Jane T.

Yelp
I got the Texas BBQ Salad and it was the exact Americana comfort food I was hoping for. Cant wait to try the Bleu Burger next

Norma M.

Yelp
Went here for a quick bite to celebrate my bf passing a big exam. Service was friendly and the food was great! The root beer is on the sweet side but that's how I like it! Keep up the great vibes and the awesome food!

Andy M.

Yelp
Big A is the place to eat. Great food, fresh, hot when served. They employ local young people who really want to help you. Big varied menu. Support them please!!

Elliot W.

Yelp
If the rootbeer wasn't as good as it was this would definitely be 3 stars. One extra for yummy rootbeer. It really is good, if you like rootbeer. Ordering was a mess. No one offers to explain or suggest anything, even after I tell them it's my first time there. I ended up paying full price for items I could've had cheaper on a combo. No one corrected it or suggested otherwise. The steak and cheese was OK. It was too dry. If I was in town again, I'd stop for a rootbeer float and maybe see if I have better luck with a burger.

Danielle N.

Yelp
Giving this place a solid 1 star. The food had massive portions, flavorful, and they bring out the food within the time they say... so you pull up, push a button, they take your order, bring your food to the car, take your payment, leave for such a quick time, and come right back with papers to sign or change. Well, I was handed the food, in a nice thick paper bag. As I opened the bag, the waitress starts walking back with our car papers to sign and I pull a black piece of hair out of our BLT. She legit says, "oh no". I was shocked. I just stared at her in misbelief of her reaction. She didn't offer to remake it or give us our money back. She showed it no attention. I went to hand her the piece of hair we both saw and it dropped in change. I should have been more demanding and asked them to remake it, I just won't ever return. A solid one star for the customer service.

Nevada County F.

Yelp
Ordered food for 6 people on NYE at about 6pm. They had all of our food ready in 15 minutes, exactly as we asked for it. The best burger joint in NC.

Ashley K.

Yelp
Had the San Francisco & Sonora Burgers, Crazy Fries, & A Milk Shake. Quick service. Food was good. Kid friendly.

Noah P.

Yelp
If your ever taking a long road trip to to or from cali, this place is a really good pit stop for food. Burgers are nicely crisp, with them making the edges of the burger crunchy; along with the bun crisped by the grill. And unlike some burger places, this place doesn't cover the burger in sauces to mask the bland taste of the actual patty. They season the patty well, and use a very low amount of 1000 island so you can feel both. The fries are not over seasoned and crispy, very delicious. The milkshakes were pretty good, but vanilla is personally my favorite. The only concern is the price, but we got around and is debatably worth. Regret that i didn't get the root beer though. Planning on trying it!

R V.

Yelp
Best Philly cheesesteak in Grass Valleys ! Onion rings are great and they have good ranch. We love ranch and are picky about it. I'll have to try more items on their menu one day but for now I'll stick the the Philly because it is that good. Cute establishment and staff are friendly and wear masks. We get takeout.
