"Oxford-based morning meal restaurant Big Bad Breakfast welcomed in patrons over the weekend, but lists its official opening as Tuesday, September 24. Before the opening, Eater photographer Leslie Ryann McKellar stopped in to 455 Meeting Street to see how the Big Bad Breakfast team transformed the former Simply Fashions building into a modern Southern diner." - Erin Perkins

If you go on the weekend during peak breakfast time, be prepared to wait. There are some shops nearby that open at 9a to help you pass the time. They text you when your table is ready. Service is great- they keep the coffee flowing while you wait for the food. They have some adult beverages too. They have everything from pancakes and waffles to biscuits and fresh baked bread/ toast. Had the avocado toast and poached eggs and an omelette. Both were delicious. I didn’t see any ramps outside so I am not sure how handicapped accessible it is. Recommend calling first. The seating is either small tables or sit at the counter.

Big Bad Breakfast absolutely lives up to the hype! This place takes breakfast to a whole new level—Southern comfort food with a creative twist. Everything is made with love and serious flavor. The vibe is laid-back and welcoming, and the service is always friendly and fast, even when it’s busy (which it usually is—and for good reason). It’s the kind of breakfast spot that makes you want to become a regular. A must-stop if you're in Oxford!

The food was great. The restaurant was clean and all the staff were very friendly. I had the “Redneck Benny”; one of the eggs had the classic hollandaise sauce and the other sawmill gravy. The sweet potato hash was great also.

Cannot rate because the last encounter was a disaster. After order had been taken, waited more than 30 minutes for food which was never served...Was not there during the weekend and therefore I do not understand the long wait time. Previous visits, over the years, have been excellent... Service and food were great...So, I am so surprised by this last experience.

I am from out of state, first time in Oxford. I wanted to try a local spot and support small local businesses, but when I walked in, I was not acknowledged by the lady at the register and stood there for several minutes and had to ask to sit at the bar. I sat at the bar and waited for 10 min and was never even acknowledged. Mind you, they were not slammed, it was after the morning rush. The guy who walked in before me who also sat at the bar got a drink and then started his order while I sat there waiting for someone to even look at me, and so I walked out. Rude people and bad service here. I was a waitress for a few years when I was younger, and I know the least a waitress can do is acknowledge you and let the customer know you are busy and that you will be right with them, it takes 2 seconds. People understand if the waitress is busy, but at least let the customer know and acknowledge them! They missed out on a great tip and multiple merchandise purchases as I wanted to buy a few things to take back home. Gave my business to another gift store somewhere else and a restaurant and had top notch service. If you want awful service, come here!!!!

While visiting Oxford, a friend introduced us to Big Bad Breakfast, and we are so happy for the introduction! My wife had French Toast, and I had the Mother of all Biscuits. (Dirty bird style) Our friend had oatmeal pancakes-- had never heard of these but tried them and was pleasantly surprised. Both the food and service were excellent and we are now looking for other locations in our travels! Highly recommend!

Great Curb Appeal. Planter boxes maintained by Leo, look real good for the season. Restaurant clean. Service (Dayna) was good. Food was outstanding!! Great job Sous Chef Leo.

If you are from out of town like us from Waco, Texas you have to stop in here and have breakfast. It's a great, hole in the wall located in a strip center that's well worth the wait to get in. We waited for 20 minutes to get in and it was worth it. The omelets are amazing as is the biscuits and gravy. Highly highly recommend stopping in here to eat breakfast! 2 thumbs up from a Texan!

Yelp
Before attending the Ole Miss versus Mississippi State football game, my dad, husband, and I came to Big Bad Breakfast. Luckily, I was able to join the waitlist prior to our arrival and I was glad I did because there was quite a long wait given that it was game day. Once we were finally seated, the service was very fast and extremely friendly. I opted to try their biscuits and gravy, adding some scrambled eggs and a side of andouille sausage. The biscuits and gravy were absolutely delicious and total comfort food. The andouille sausage had a nice spice to it and was the perfect protein boost I was looking for. Everything on the menu looked divine and I truly don't think you can go wrong with anything you would order from this place. But if you come for brunch on a weekend, especially before a college football game, be prepared to wait.

Yelp
First visit but not the last! Party of 5 so we got a great overview. First get on the waitlist it works great. Second we sat outside as weather was fantastic Sunday after an Ole Miss win! The inside looked busy but nice. Bathrooms were clean. Kitchen was dated, busy and clean. Staff was fantastic. Lots of parking. But who cares about all that how is the Food? I had the Creole omelette with sweet potatoes hash. The omelette was out of this world, very tasty. Hash was meh but I was not looking for anything shocking. The biscuit was fantastic ( I ordered 2 more) I got the coffee and milk cold brew. It was good. Two of my guests loved the Vietnamese coffee ( very sweet) one enjoyed a scramble bowl and said it was like a deconstructed omelette with biscuit. The other got Avocado toast and loved it. I was struck by the very generous serving and vibrant colors. My wife got the bacon and French toast, it looked fantastic and she loved every bite. Her greatest joy was the little kick the bacon had with a sweet finish. My son is the odd duck fried chicken and fries with hot chocolate. He ate everything and said he enjoyed it but honestly he was more about the table of toys they had out to keep waiting kids occupied. All in all great choice, 5 star for breakfast or brunch. Great and attentive service! Highly recommend. Total spend before tip for five was 98 bucks but we were all very satisfied and left happy.

Yelp
5 stars for food. 1 star for service. First, I'd like to say I love that you can add yourself to the waitlist while you're getting ready and get updates on where you are in line. The food was delicious, but not hot. It was lukewarm at best. The rolls were great! Their hash browns are incredible! The BLT omelet is top notch and I love my huevos rancheros. Everything had amazing flavor and we loved our meal. However, the service was absolutely terrible. She checked on us to get us drinks at first, then never again. Someone else delivered our lukewarm food to us and then we had to hunt our waitress down for food. We're not easy to please so this was pretty disappointing especially when our waitress would walk right past us to go to another table. It was frustrating. I would recommend this place but definitely not worth a 2 hour wait unless you add yourself to the waitlist.

Yelp
Here's a tip- there was no line at 7:45am today (Wednesday) when I pulled into the plaza that the establishment resides. I walk in the door and was immediately greeted by a friendly guy who seated me at the bar. I order a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit with a side of fruit. It was a great meal. And, I will add that the fruit side was full of honeydew melon, which most of the time I consider the black licorice of the fruit world but it was INCREDIBLE. I found the staff warm and engaging. It is a quickly like place that can make a biscuit right.

Yelp
I've been hearing about this place forever so was excited to try it. Great kind of funky atmosphere, service was good, I had the Chicken and Waffle which was huge! The waffle could have been crispier but the chicken was yum! My husband and son had the gumbo and we thought it was good but not spicy enough. Would go back but nothing jumped out at us.

Ella H.

Yelp
I have been here multiple times and the service and food is always good. However I came in around 1:15 with three other people and the waitress Jessy was not very good at all. Anytime we wanted something I had to wave her down even if it was to fill our water. To add on to this we didn't get our food for 50 mins. Jessy said the kitchen was backed up however people who came in probably like 20 mins after us were somehow getting their food. I understand if there was a problem but Jessy didn't apologize or say anything about our food. Once we got our food one of our plates were cold. I asked if we could get it off the bill rather than taking it back because we didn't want to wait any longer and Jessy didn't even apologize for this either. She completely avoided our table the whole entire time as she helped and refilled peoples drinks around us.

Yelp
Love to go to this restaurant! I like the menu and the nice employees. But the best thing of everything on the menu is the Brulee grapefruit! It is done perfectly! They of course are known for their breakfast but they make a great chef salad!

Jason M.

Yelp
Waited 45 minutes with our name in the waitlist only to be "stashed" into the bar area (with a child and a booster seat) with

Brad H.

Yelp
My first visit a few months ago was amazing. The visit this past week was disappointing. The service was pretty not existent at the time"bar" seating. It was very what do you want ok bye now- no customer service or interaction beyond what was required. The chicken biscuit had horrible chicken that was chewy. The last time I remember great southern hospitality and service- this visit was alot of younger staff who clearly did not want to be at work. Sad to see the difference. I might give it another chance on my future visit to Oxford but with so many great places when it is clear managers are ok with staff who don't care why not support a business that actually wants customers...

Brian J.

Yelp
I had the lean breakfast and my dad had the BLT omelet with a vanilla coffee. Great music and cool place to be with some great breakfast to start your Saturday!

Katelynn M.

Yelp
I love coming to BBB breakfast! It's about an hour from Desoto County and has some of the best biscuits I've ever tasted. Be sure to get on the waitlist because the wait can be long. The service was excellent, and everyone was so friendly. This location reminds me of being in my grandmother's kitchen. Did I mention they have some mimosas? Yea, it's definitely worth the drive!

Tee C.

Yelp
Went to BBB for breakfast on a Saturday and the service and food was great. Our server, Ansley, was sweet and very accommodating. I ordered the Irish coffee with added vanilla syrup and, the shrimp fried rice bowl and both of them were delicious. The rice bowl was so good, I ate the whole thing. I also ordered a side of the bacon, which was also great. I definitely would be back!

Kelly A.

Yelp
Delicious food and excellent service; the iced coffee is out of this world (coming from me, someone that never drinks iced coffee).

Meghan B.

Yelp
Such a fun and cute breakfast place. We weren't planning on eating breakfast before our college tour but the reviews looked so good! Very charming and fun inside! Decent menu with a lot choices. I had the oatmeal chocolate chip pancakes with strawberries and whip cream. I had very few strawberries on it and a dollop of whip cream (which I was fine with) but it was more a garnish. Side of fruit was melon and grapes. My husband got the Secret History Omelet, a flavorful omelet with Swiss cheese, shallots, tomatoes and seasonal herbs, served with a biscuit. My daughter enjoyed the Big Bad Breakfast Plate with bacon, eggs, toast and hash brown cakes. Very good breakfast place.

Carrie C.

Yelp
Yummy ! Food was quick and hot and delicious - a little loud but we still had good conversations - we come here every time we visit our son at Oxford! Enjoyed the Big Bad Cold Brew Mocha !

Chade M.

Yelp
Great home cooking ! First time here. Luke is incredible server!! This is the best breakfast in Oxford!!!

Mike D.

Yelp
Best breakfast/lunch restaurant in the South! We always come here when we're in town from New Jersey. The food is always delicious, the service and staff is amazing and the kitchen is awesome! Pancakes and specials are to die for, great ambiance - always a great meal and experience regardless of what you order! Can't wait to go back!

Cory C.

Yelp
Best breakfast in town! Get here early though because it stays busy! The oatmeal short stack pancakes are delicious and best in town! The cathead chicken biscuit was phenomenal as well. The service is excellent and always clean. Don't settle on Waffle House with cigarette ashes in food, eat here!

Priscilla F.

Yelp
If you can get a table in less than an hour consider yourself lucky. Best to avoid on game day weekends or parents weekends since this is where everyone and their mother will be. My favorite way to experience BBB is on a random weekday morning when it's fairly quiet. The quality starts at the ingredients. Firstly, if you're looking for thick cut and flavorful bacon you found it. The bacon is smokehouse cured in a Tabasco and brown sugar rub so it has a kick. Their grits are stone ground and the biscuits are flaky & fluffy. I bought my dad the Big Bad Breakfast cookbook and we even make the signature BBB biscuits from Texas. I'm a fan of the sausage gravy but I've heard good things about the red eye as well. When in doubt I go with the waffle, shrimp and grits, or the big bad breakfast skillet. Just come back more than once so you can try it all!

Lisa M.

Yelp
Our longtime go to place for breakfast. You won't be disappointed. The waiters are awesome too!

Vikram V.

Yelp
Maybe the best biscuits I've ever had. The fried chicken breakfast sandwich was excellent, as were the shrimp and grits, and the creole omelet.

Lilly F.

Yelp
Athough getting a table can be quite hard, it is worth the wait! The food is delicious and not overly expensive. We have tried almost all of the City grocery restaurants and they are all so good!

Benjamin J.

Yelp
Cancelled our online checkin twice before we were supposed to arrive for checkin. Still arrived early and waited longer to be seated. Not overly busy. Waited 10 minutes to place order. Waited 25 minutes for food. Food had hair in it. Server was never to be found. Only comped 1 of 3 meals. If my daughter was choosing a school based on solely on a breakfast spot, Ole Miss would be last on her list. This place is just not good from management to service to food. Embarrassing.

Emma D.

Yelp
I went in to add my name to the waitlist and was quoted with an hour and a half wait time. Because I had a larger party (5 people) I found this acceptable at the time. But an hour later I went to check on my status and another hostess said I should have been quoted 2 hours. She said we would not be able to be seated for another hour. We decided just to eat somewhere else feeling upset and like we wasted our time.

Cp M.

Yelp
When Oxford big bad breakfast is a must... not only is it a local favorite but everyone who comes to town will not be disappointed. Homemade diner type food don't pass up the special thick Tabasco bacon they have !

Brooke M.

Yelp
My first time in Oxford and we had breakfast here, the grits are the best I've ever had! I dream about them and I'm so excited for my visit in two weeks.

Gina H.

Yelp
Great food but poor customer service. The food was worth the wait but the service was not.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Amazing food and service, went 2 days in a row. We can't wait to come back to Oxford and come back here.

Santiago L.

Yelp
Came here on May 12th with a party of seven and it was terrible with poor service, bland food, and just overall bad communication. My party got into the reservation que at 9 AM and we were told that it would be 45 minutes before we could get a seat. After arriving there around 9:35 we were told it would be a longer wait. Instead of being sat down around 9:45-10 we had to wait till 11 to even be seated inside. After being sat down, we had a waitress come over with drinks and everything was set up to be fine. However, our food took 45+ minutes to be served. Throughout our wait for food our waitress didn't provide refills and was very impatient and irritable when we did ask for refills. Once we received our food we were throughly disappointed as the food was bland and unremarkable. The restaurant was cute and had an okay atmosphere but the bland food, bad service, and outrageous wait times make this restaurant a no go for me and my family.

Julie Z.

Yelp
Always love to go for breakfast when we're in town. Friendly service and great food!

Christine H.

Yelp
This place has more than earned my repeated business. Visiting our student from out of town, we had a dog with us. They went above and beyond to make outside accommodations for us so that we could have one more meal as a family this trip. Their staff was a pleasant and courteous. They made sure we were welcomed and taken care of. They never made it seem like we were a bother. I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention the food. The breakfast was served quickly and hot. Lots of choices and something for everyone. Everything had great flavor. Thanks again. We will be back.

Edson D.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and get the oatmeal pancakes! I've never tried oatmeal pancakes and decided to give it a try and glad I did! Service was fast and friendly.

Matthew A.

Yelp
The best bacon I have ever had in my life. I have become an Ole Miss fan simply to get back to that bacon.

Katlynn G.

Yelp
Make a reservation online if you can so you don't have to sit in the parking lot or outside, other than that I could eat here everyday!!! Never had anything I didn't like!!!

Cristy D.

Yelp
Amazing chicken and waffles. No need for syrup. The chicken melts in your mouth. Would definitely go back once in Oxford

Lenwood B.

Yelp
The wait can be long, but the food is worth it. Sandra & johnny are great servers! Great atmosphere. Everything on the menu is good.

Christie M.

Yelp
Service was fast and friendly. Food was great, can't stop thinking about that brûlée grapefruit. Can't wait to go back!

Steve S.

Yelp
Great breakfast. Love the bowls. The biscuits are incredible. Only complaint is their bacon is spicy but that is my personal preference. I like that if there is a wait list when you get there they text you when your table is ready.

Requel P.

Yelp
I returned to the great University of Mississippi for my beloved Black Alumni Reunion. I was very determined to revisit BBB as I've only visited it once before prior to graduating. Well the great taste I had in my memory could not compete with the experience I had this weekend. First, they have mimosas now! I don't recall them having that before but I'm glad they do now! I actually ordered both of their coffee drinks with the rum & whiskey in it. It was soo good & satisfying! I actually visited twice during my stay because of how good my experience was! My omelette was delicious and very fulfilling! The cheese grits are the best ever! Like everything I've had here has been soo good. It's that welcome home kind of breakfast! It's a small place but everyone is friendly. It's like eating breakfast with your big family. BBB is the epitome of a Mississippi Southern-style Soulfood meal!

Mark J.

Yelp
Classic Oxford breakfast - usually a wait to get in but worth the wait to get some classic southern food. Efficient service and down home southern diner ambiance.

Tara G.

Yelp
This is my favorite breakfast spot in Oxford. I tried the chili omelette and I wasn't disappointed. I've never even considered putting chili in an omelette but I'm glad they did. The biscuits are delicious and the service was great. My new go to is the huevos rancheros

E H.

Yelp
Food and service are excellent. Believe the reviews that say they're swamped though! We got in line, online, and they had our table ready to go when we arrived. I was impressed by them in every way!

Chad B.

Yelp
Forget Denny's Grand Slam--Triple Bs for the home run! A classic diner with a hometown touch and feel. Popular and for good reason. I had the Oxtail speciality breaksfast. It was greasy, fatty, on the bone bowe, and oozing with dense meaty flavor. Over cheesy grits and with a fried egg and the fuse for the bomb of Southern goodness was lit. The staff is diligent and hard working. The prices are reasonable ($15-25 with a kids menu) in this inflationary world. A true taste of Americana!

Josephine S.

Yelp
Still doesn't disappoint. This was the second time I came here two years later and still delicious. Popular and had to wait 30 minutes. Came with family who ordered the chocolate chip pancakes but I think the waitress missed it because there were no chocolate chips but we weren't charged so all is good. My sister got the breakfast crumble which was yummy. I got the shrimp and grits. Eggs were cooked perfectly, shrimp was also done perfectly. The sauce brought everything together and the grits were a little cheesy. All in all a great shrimp and grits.

Dan B.

Yelp
The food makes Big Bad Breakfast. The restaurant has plenty of parking and the multitude of dishes are delicious. Be prepared for long waits, but large crowds just testify to their quality.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Great food, variety to the menu and friendly staff. Will definitely be back when in Oxford.

Ann K.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. The lightest and fluffiest oatmeal pancakes ever. Eggs cooked to perfection. Grits were amazing too. Service outstanding and the food came out quick. Fun ambiance in the city of Oxford. Highly recommend

Tessa H.

Yelp
The food is never disappointing. The service is always fabulous. Very friendly and fun atmosphere. Most of the time there is a wait but it is not horrible

Gail B.

Yelp
Good food. Good service. Great breakfast option. Pancakes were large. Wait was short.
