Dressing vs. Stuffing: What’s the Difference? | Eater

"Included among a restaurateur’s Oxford-area concepts, this casual, comfort-food–oriented spot is tied to the chef’s family-style Thanksgiving sensibility that prizes fresh cornbread for dressing and hearty, well-seasoned sides alongside the turkey." - Chris Fuhrmeister

John Currence’s Big Bad Breakfast to Expand Across the South | Eater

"Launched in Oxford about a decade ago by James Beard Award-winning chef John Currence as a celebration of "the forgotten meal," this concept concentrates on classic breakfast staples—pancakes, egg skillets, biscuits and popular egg sandwiches—and even spawned a cookbook in 2016. It has been the only concept from the chef’s group to expand, growing to locations including Birmingham, Inlet Beach (which incorporates Gulf seafood), and Homewood (which sources doughnuts from a local shop), with additional openings planned in Florence and Charleston. Early expansion was partly partner-driven, but future growth will follow a deliberate "band" strategy radiating from Birmingham and Oxford, seeking capable local partners and tailoring each site to community ingredients and businesses. The brand targets a slightly more hip, quality-focused clientele (think Whole Foods shoppers willing to pay for provenance), sees breakfast as an under-served market with room to grow even in larger cities, and views the main obstacle as changing customers’ habits enough to get them up earlier for an egg plate." - Monica Burton

This place is amazing! The food was superb, the atmosphere is nice - music was loud enough to hear but quiet enough to have a conversation. Our waitress was wonderful, attentive, and polite. Definitely will be going back and 110% recommend this place. You will need to budget wait time when planning a visit here especially on the weekend. Well worth the wait!

Google
An AMAZING breakfast!! The big bad skillet had ham and sausage and egg and onion, and then topped off with freshly shredded cheddar cheese. They cook their eggs in butter, which makes a huge difference in taste. House made bacon, jams, orange juice and biscuits were chef’s kiss! 😘 I saw a carton of Florida oranges being toted over to the juicer and couldn’t resist. Some of the best OJ ever. You could taste the fresh blueberries and blackberries in their jams. The honey was a rich local honey. You can even get their fresh squeezed OJ to go in a glass bottle. Clean friendly environment. Loved this place and will happily stop by when in Birmingham again.

Google
Good breakfast spot. Had about a 30 min wait for a table. Friendly staff that was very attentive to our needs at the tabke. Food was fulfilling. Ham and cheese omelet was very tasty with a hearty amount of ingredients insie. Would definitely visit again if provided the opportunity.

Do not go on the weekends unless you want to wait for seats and like extremely loud atmosphere. We tried on a Sunday and there was a 30 minute wait list. We were able to go back today, Monday, and there was seating readily available and it was not loud at all. There is seating downstairs and upstairs. We went upstairs and it is really nice up there. We got different dishes today since we had gone to the other Big Bad Breakfast on Hwy 280 the day prior. Again the food was delicious and the service was quick (12 PM time frame). Thanks to our server for recommending other locations we could go to see and shop.

Google
This is my 3rd location to visit and they never miss. Our server Isaac was so friendly . Our food was served promptly and was hot and delicious. I had the biscuit crumble and my husband had the big bad biscuit.

Google
Mya, provided amazing service. She made sure to keep checking in on us. She asked several times if we enjoyed the food and made wonderful recommendations. I really enjoyed the chicken and waffles with the local honey drizzled on top. I even had the homemade biscuits with several samples of jams. Try the peach jam! It’s AMAZING!!!! Great experience m!

Yelp
Great good; I thoroughly enjoyed it! The service was amazing too. I absolutely recommend eating here.

Yelp
I love visiting here. It is my mom and I's breakfast spot to go when we want to have brunch or breakfast together. My last visit, I got steak and egg. The steak was perfectly cooked to my instruction. I always worry about overdone steak. But this as done right. My mom enjoyed her egg white omelette and the biscuits were also fluffy and wasn't dry. We were able to find a park right out front. So I was happy about that, as parking can be quite the task in this place. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and will be back again.

Yelp
Friendly Sunday service!!Our server, Madelyn, was helpful and attentive. She helped me make a choice of entrees . The biscuits and pancakes are huge! I oreder tge huevos rancheros grits bowl and it was pretty tasty. The portion size was very filling. I couldnt eat it all. My boo had the Breakfast Plate and left no crumbs. It is a very casual dining spot so no need to worry about getting dolled up or wearing your Sunday best. I look forward to vising again next time I am in Birmingham .

Yelp
Went there Sunday, Memorial Day weekend. Not crowded at 8:30 am, had a nice table and good service. I had standard breakfast, wife had omelette. Took a little longer to prepare than I thought....like 25 minutes. But great taste!

Yelp
Breakfast is my favorite meal and I was so excited to find a popular diner in walking distance from the Aloft hotel. I sat at the bar on a comfortable chair downstairs and was immediately greeted and asked what I wanted to drink. The waitress had an amazing personality, was kind, quick, and was helpful with recommendations. Do not leave without trying the pancakes, OMG.... out of this world. So fluffy and delicious. I had a side with the yard work skillet I ordered. The pancakes were 10/10. The skillet was not my favorite. Ingredients looked fresh and it was a decent serving, however it was lacking flavor, a little too bland for my taste. I was very thankful they had salsa at the bar that helped add some flavor to the skillet. I also had an ice coffee Vietnamese style with caramel and vanilla syrup. Very good! It's a charming breakfast spot and it's popular. There's something on the menu for everyone. Great service and good food! They also have lunch items if you're not a breakfast person.

Yelp
Excellent service. Food arrived extremely fast. Orders were correct. For EVERYONE in the party. Staff did a great job accommodating our large party. No complaints.

Yelp
My husband and I came to Big B breakfast a few years ago, but cannot get in due to the long wait! My friends and I were here for girls weekend and decided to give it one more try. And boy was I happy we did were seated immediately. Keep in mind we got there very early before 8 o'clock. The food is absolutely delicious. I got the sausage eggs and French toast. Oh my goodness the sausage is some of the best I have ever had. The French toast were light fluffy, and delicious. We will definitely be back! Food: 2 Service: 2 Ambiance 1

Yelp
I was traveling through here and came across this place!! It is one of the best breakfast places I have had in the south. The food and the service was great!! This is a must stop! I got The avocado toast and it was so yummy !
google avatar

Yelp
I really liked this place and thought it was above average for a trendy brunch spot. The service was really good, lots of seating, and a big menu. I got the breakfast plate with poached eggs, chicken sausage and a biscuit, and every part of it was great- there was so much flavor. I got the cold brew, which was underwhelming and not very strong, but still good. My friends love this place so I'm sure we'll end up coming back. They also have Vietnamese iced coffee
google avatar

Yelp
The Biscuits are now perfect and they fixed the US Flag display. I've been getting the Veggie Omlet with Greens and a side of Grits. So good! The Pancakes are always delicious- very consistent Love BBB!
google avatar

Yelp
Magical. Shrimp and grits heaven. Not sure how else to describe this meal other than simply the best shrimp and grits I've ever had - the grits were extra buttery and the shrimp cooked in this tomato, sausage concoction that I'm still dreaming about. The wife doesn't even like grits and she kept taking bites of mine. Yes, that unforgettably stupid good! The redneck benny was also pretty amazing. Two eggs on top of some of some delicious gravy on top of some ham on top of some golden, fluffy biscuits? What's not to love? Their drinks are just the perfect accompaniments to was everything down. Super tasty bloody mary and pineapple upside down mimosa. Staff was great. They seemed to have a great time and that attitude was infectious. All super cool! They need to open one in Austin!

Yelp
This spot was recommended to me by a friend from Bham as well as the Internet. When I arrived they were busy, as I expected. I was very lucky to grab the last single bar counter seat at the time. I ordered a sweet tea as well as the Belgian Waffle. I got fruit on the side. I chose a sweet brunch dish as I had ate a hearty biscuit from Martin's in Georgia for breakfast. This probably isn't their best, but I still enjoyed my meal. The atmosphere is cozy as well!

Thomas S.

Yelp
It was ok, nothing special. A tad expensive. Won't be back as there's better options at a lower price in the area.
google avatar

Helen H.

Yelp
The food was good and the service was excellent. I didn't care for the Bloody Mary or the smoked sausage. The sausage casing was really hard and tough to eat. I liked the grits and the eggs. I will return and order something else. I loved the signs on the wall and the atmosphere.

Yelp
I was craving biscuits, and this place did not disappoint. The biscuits and gravy was (near) perfect, although I wish the gravy had been warmer. The biscuit sandwich was light and flaky. My mom said her bacon and eggs were perfection, high praise from us breakfast snobs. Very cool, "authentic" atmosphere. A bustling southern diner with the staff's saucy personalities to match. Cool t-shirts, too (I purchased one). Very busy on a Saturday morning, so be prepared to wait. Nothing too original to say, because it is simply a hometown, home cooking breakfast place. Definitely recommend

Yelp
This has been on my list of brunches I've wanted to try for quite some time. I finally got to try it last weekend with some friends. This is a convenient location for me in Homewood and is surrounded by all the cute shops in Homewood. I expected a wait on a Saturday morning, and we did have a 25 minute wait but it wasn't too bad at all as we could shop around while we waited. They have both upstairs and downstairs seating which was kind of neat as most restaurants around here are only one level. We sat upstairs facing the window so that was kind of cool. I saw several menu options I wanted to try. It was so hard choosing what I wanted! I'm a sucker for both skillet scrambles and avocado toast so I was torn among those options. It just means I'll have to come back! I ended up going with the Big Bad Breakfast Skillet and a side of whole wheat toast. There were eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, onions, potato, and cheddar in it. It was so good! One of the best breakfast items I've ever had! It sounded good, and tasted even better! Service was pretty good too, and now I know what all the hype is about!

Yelp
If you're looking for a classic American and southern breakfast spot this is it! It's a cozy spot with lots of seating, including an upstairs with lots of sunlight. They have tons of omelets, platters, skillets, pancakes, you name it! They have a fun drink menu with a seasonal menu that rotates. My breakfast burrito hit the spot, and the breakfast skillet my friend hit was the cheesy, hearty breakfast you need at the end of a long weekend. The fried chicken on the chicken and waffles was cooked well, though the waffle was a touch lacking. Downside, the wait can get very long on weekends and not sure why, but sometimes the restaurant will shut down their Yelp waitlist. So make sure to be early or expect a wait!
google avatar

Stephen K.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Plan for busy times as the wait can be long sometimes. Service is very good
google avatar

Delmus W.

Yelp
They DO NOT MISS! Amazing food great atmosphere. Jamiya (spelling) was amazing as our waitress. French toast is a hit as well at the shrimp and grits. Oh and if you like biscuits and gravy...you will love it. 10/10 definitely recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite granola bowls! Hubby enjoys the traditional breakfast....he prefers scrambled eggs over poached. Bacon is yummy, and the brûlée grapefruit is a special treat.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Birmingham. The breakfast is delicious and everything we ordered was delightfully perfect! The Servers were also great and always efficient, happy and polite. Looking forward to returning back and I would not hesitate to recommend this place to to anyone looking for somewhere a unique breakfast spot in B'ham AL! I'm looking forward to being back here again, when I'm back in B'ham. Thanks for the culinary memories!

Yelp
Place has gone kinda downhill. Not as quality anymore. Tastes like reheated frozen food unfortunately.

Yelp
New breakfast spot I found here in Birmingham. I have to say It's probably one of my favorites here so far. From the time I walked in the door and was greeted by the energetic, smiling faces at the door until I left I didn't have to ask for anything! After spending what seemed like 30 minutes looking at other Elite member reviews of this place I finally settled on a couple entrees. The first was The Mother of all biscuits! The biscuit was hot, fresh, fluffy which was the perfect bed for the chicken tenders and yummy pool of sausage gravy. There was also a generous amount of cheddar cheese on top. I give this dish an 8 out of 10. If the tenders were a chicken breast, then I would have given it a 10. The flavor was a 9 out of 10 though. The iced tea was fresh, and I was offered one to go which I gladly accepted. The other entree I chose was the Chicken biscuit. I will give this one a 6 out of 10. The biscuit was still warm, fresh and delicious, but the Chicken breast was fried and there was just a slice of cheddar cheese on top. They could have easily brined the chicken and added some homemade pickles and a cranberry relish?!?! I mean anything besides a boring piece of chicken. The staff were super friendly and attentive so I will definitely be back. The ambiance was very loud though because of the kitchen being directly behind the bar, also it was a very cold day yesterday and I sat at the bar, every time the front door opened I was in the freezer. Other than that, it was a great breakfast spot.

Yelp
They had Great service and good food. It was a Wonderful atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Big Bad Breakfast is a homey, welcoming diner with two floors of seating. However, they get busy quickly! Be sure to put your name on the Yelp waitlist. Service: We waited around 20 minutes for a table. Once we were seated, the service was friendly and quick. Food: We ordered the Breakfast "Crumble," Low Country Skillet, and the Shrimp & Grits. The Breakfast "Crumble" had a little bit of everything, and the poached eggs brought together this hearty dish. The Shrimp & Grits were creamy, but we thought the tomato sauce was a little too overpowering. The Low Country Skillet was filling, though dry and lacking in flavor. Overall: While Big Bad Breakfast makes for a hearty and filling meal, the flavor in some of the dishes did not meet their mark. Maybe this was an off day for Big Bad Breakfast; we left our meal full but not satisfied.

Marlen W.

Yelp
The food is top tier. This was our first visit but since our son is going to college in Birmingham, this is the first of many visits. We highly recommend this place for food and the people are incredibly nice and welcoming.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for Saturday morning brunch and Big Bad Breakfast didn't disappoint! I usually go for the low country skillet, but this time I tried the Jack Benny. The eggs were over easy, just like I like em. I love a good hash and these were nice and crispy. I went with the grapefruit as a side in an attempt to be healthy lol, but it was broiled and actually quite tasty. Service was nice and friendly and even though there was a crowd everyone was in good spirits, likely due to their full bellies. Sometimes I'll come sit at the bar...or maybe it's just a countertop since they don't sell alcohol. Anyway, sometimes I'll sit there and dine to add some people time to my remote work life, it's typically all good vibes.
google avatar

Paige K.

Yelp
Consistently delicious Today I got chicken and waffles, add a side of sausage gravy bc why not?!!! The portions are generous! There were 3 huge chicken tenders with the waffle, fresh and crispy delicious. My partner got Jack Benny with sausage gravy. Their ham is exceptional - I am typically not a fan of breakfast ham. Everything they do is good. Staff is always cordial. Go early on the weekend or prepare to enjoy the company of your party while you wait.

Yelp
This is an updated review. My last review of Big Bad Breakfast in Homewood was in October of 2021. I was less than happy. Reluctantly, I tried it again and was pleasantly surprised. I went because I do love their pancakes. So, we got a stack, and they were, how do I say it, GREAT. However, at the last minute, since my wife got the pancakes, I ordered a traditional breakfast. Eggs over easy, perfectly cooked. Crispy bacon, perfect. Whole Wheat thick sliced toasted with homemade strawberry jam. The Jam is worth the price of admission. Then a very special surprise. They have potatoes, cut in chunks with grilled onions that are to die for. Over the top and life changing. I am 67 and for the first time in my life I had a ice coffee drink with some adult beverages added. I can't remember the name but it was really good. The service was nice, we sat at the bar because it was just the two of us. Half way through the meal, I was thinking when I could come back. Friday my daughter is closing on her first him, which is in Homewood. Maybe that is the next time I can have this delightful breakfast. Eat well, Drink well and stay healthy.

Yelp
We went on a Monday for a late breakfast. We only had to wait about 10 mins to be seated and they were quick to get our order and we didnt have a long wait to recieve our food either. Our waitress was very kind and our meals were all made correctly and hot and fresh. The food was great and we really enjoyed our visit.

Brent W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. Great service. Super friendly and attentive. The Mother of all Biscuits - Dirty Style was so good. I really wanted another.
google avatar

Krystal M.

Yelp
I had the big bad skillet (swapped out the ham for extra bacon) and decided on the biscuit. It was amazing!! The biscuit tasted homemade and it all hit the spot! When I came in though, it seemed as though they just had a pop and all the spaces at the bar were not fully cleaned yet and the table placements weren't set but it didn't deter me from sitting down. Then another young lady came by and got them cleaned up next to me, so the crew was on top of everything. The service was great. I got everything I needed/ wanted.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Perfect location in Alabama but not much parking. We went for Mother's Day before leaving out of town. The service was fast although it was busy. The food was delicious, and we were also given flowers for Mother's Day.
google avatar

Yelp
Read about BBB in the Orlando International Airport - the menu and reviews made it a simple decision - so after landing in Birmingham this was my first stop. The restaurant was very busy but the staff were engaging and friendly. They slid me into a table after a short wait - but it was with it! Their biscuits are their claim to fame and did not disappoint. I'll be back!
google avatar

Meg D.

Yelp
Any time I'm in Bham, I always make a stop at BBB! One of my fav breakfast places! Service is always fast and friendly, and the food is delicious! My personal favorite is the big bad breakfast plate. You won't be disappointed
google avatar

Andy E.

Yelp
Very good service and great food! I definitely recommend the french toast! Will for sure be going back!
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Good fresh biscuits. Attentive service and lots of seating. Stairs to the second floor are steep but have a gripping feel.
google avatar

Kevin A.

Yelp
Busy as heck and the waiting line is worth it, if you aren't starving when you arrive. Food is delicious and portions are large! Wait staff is super nice and efficient. Tip them well! Only recommendation - EXPAND!!! If you increased the size of the restaurant, you would still have a waiting line and a much bigger top and bottom line too! Don't miss this place. Worth the stop and wait!
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Incredible meal. Low country skillet with shrimp, eggs, potatoes and perfect with their house salsa. 10/10

Yelp
I stopped by after leaving a doctor's visit . Upon entering I was greeted by someone behind the counter . She came around and proceeded to sit me upstairs . The server (Sam) was very friendly . Mostly everyone in there had several people at their tables . I was the only loner , so he was very attentive to my needs . The atmosphere was very loud but welcoming . Lets you know it's a great place for breakfast. I ordered the flapjacks and chicken sausage . Which was ok. Nothing special at all to make me want to have it again. The sausage had a kick to it . Little spice . And the pancakes had a hint of vanilla . That added a special flavor to them . The portion size is very fulfilling. I didn't make it half way . So if you're looking for a hearty breakfast in Homewood , this would be your spot .
google avatar

Jade A.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick breakfast. We were greeted immediately and were sat immediately. Our drink orders were taken and I took a few minutes to review the menu, since it was my first time. I couldn't decide between the French toast and the Mother of all Biscuits. The other person in my party ordered Flapjacks. We both ordered hash cakes as a side, the food was prepared in roughly 10-12 minutes. The food was fresh and hot! The only deterrence I have from the establishment is there were flies and gnats everywhere. It watered down the dining experience.
google avatar

Meagan K.

Yelp
Yum!!! We had to wait an hour but it was definitely worth the wait. Our waitress was super nice and the food was impeccable. There was some dirty silverware on the floor but aside from that it felt clean inside. Need to go take a nap now!

Yelp
Pancakes are so good! The Staff were fast and friendly. Get on the waitlist before you arrive to avoid a wait.

Yelp
The best breakfast I've had in years. Incredible find while visiting Birmingham Alabama. Don't miss out on breakfast or lunch this place in so good. I recommend the Big Bad Skillet and fresh squeezed Orange Juice. The spice bacon is amazing
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
This place HAS to be THE best breakfast around! We put our name down for a bit of wait and anticipated longer, but they got us seated quicker than the estimated wait time. Our waitress was amazing! We didn't have to wait for drinks, food, or to be checked on. She was super fun and just happy. The menu had so many things that looked great, but I chose the French Toast with a side of fruit. I've never had any like it; it was crunchy on the corners, the perfect amount of sweet, and the portion was just right. AMAZING! My husband chose the Creole Omelet with fries. GET THE FRIES! We ate every bit of food on our plates. We had a great view from the second floor with a cool atmosphere. Everything was just PERFECT!
google avatar

Kiana W.

Yelp
Love everything about this place!! Great customer service Autumn and Amber are rock stars! The people are friendly and the food was amazing! There was a bit of a wait so be prepared but they do their best to seat quickly.

Yelp
This place was great! Quick service, good portions, and great taste!!! Autumn was a pleasant and helpful host/server!!! Definitely would come back again!!

Yelp
I would preface that I am a pescatarian - so I eat fish, eggs, and dairy, but I don't eat meat. With that said, I love breakfast, and at the right place, I will find great items. I am also familiar with BBB as I visited the location in Charleston, SC. Vibe: The restaurant has a comfortable vibe. I sat at the counter/bar and saw all the action. I should note that it was later in the day and not as busy as I have read in other reviews. Service: Service was just ok - friendly but not as attentive as I would have liked. She seemed to be more interested in chatting with other customers than taking care of the basics - i.e. refilling coffee, and my food sitting in the window. Food: The food is just ok and lacks any flavor and personality. I had an Egg & Cheese Biscuit Sandwich and a side of McEwen and Sons Grits. I personally find their biscuits a bit dry and the grits were bland. All in all, I think there are better breakfast joints. Date of visit: 21 August 2023

Yelp
Food and service were both quality. Laid back atmosphere. We were seated upstairs and served by Ari. She was friendly as was the other staff! Ate all the food before we could take pics . My wife is a vegetarian and she got the big breakfast wrap and was able to sub egg whites for eggs and sausage for veggie sausage. Vegetarian friendly, for sure. And the biscuits are HUGE and amazing. We will be back!
