18 Essential Greenville, South Carolina, Restaurants

"Chef David Jones is larger than life, both in persona and stature. He was executive chef for the Dallas Cowboys and his son, D.J. Jones,  a nose tackle for the Broncos, has been known to pop in. Brisket is a best seller, along with ribs and smoked wings. The loaded fries with house sauce, pulled pork, cheese, sour cream, and chive show up on a sheet tray. Especially crisp fried South Carolina fish is available most Friday and Saturday nights. Sides include creamy mac and cheese and delectable greens." - Stephanie Burnette

We had the pulled pork sandwich basket in the rib basket. The pulled pork was moist and wonderfully smokey. The fries and okra were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The ribs had a perfect char on the outside and were delicious. Crystal our server was both friendly and informative. Quick with the drink refills as well. Our first visit and we will definitely be going back!

Absolutely loved my experience here from beginning to end. I was greeted when I came in, all the staff was incredibly kind and sweet. But most importantly the food was absolutely amazing. I got the ribs and the loaded fries appetizer. I'll definitely be back, it seems rare that you find such quality customer service!

We had a great meal for a group of 40 high school football players. We had plenty of food even though it technically wasn’t an all you can eat set up. Everyone left feeling stuffed! Our buffet included pulled pork, chopped brisket and chopped chicken with mac and cheese, baked beans, and cole slaw as sides. We topped it off with banana pudding for dessert. Big Dave brought some sweet potato crunch for the coaches to try…. All of it was great! The food was great, but the people made it even better. Dave and his daughters were easy to work with for a large group and treated us like family. I highly recommend stopping at Big Dave’s!

I went to Big Dave's BBQ for the first time for lunch. I got a brisket sandwich plate with Cajun fries. The brisket was tender and had a good smokey flavor. The sauce went really well with the beef, not too sweet, not too tangy. The fries were crispy and the Cajun seasoning was a nice touch. The wait staff were nice and that's always a plus. I'll be back to try the pork next.

Do yourself a *huge* favor and come to this place ASAP. EVERYTHING here was incredible. The food was amazing, the service was friendly and wonderful, and the restaurant was clean. BEST BBQ *I* have personally had locally. Our waitress was Big Dave's daughter and she was *wonderful* . 11/10, will definitely be back.

First visit here, but it will absolutely not be the last for us. The customer service is out of this world, along with the food. Pictured is the burnt ends with cajun fries, Pulled pork & mac and cheese toaster with cajun fries & sweet potato crunch, & homemade banana pudding. I will say, i’ve never had banana pudding with pineapple in it so that was a surprise but everything is so delicious here. ❤️ Seriously take the time to come here, you won’t regret it ❤️

After so many 5 star reviews I decided to give this place a shot. I should have listened to the 1 star reviews. The restaurant itself is fine. It appeared to be clean and the service was good. There was just me and one other table in the restaurant at noon on a Saturday. Probably should’ve been clue number 1. The brisket was chewy and tasted dry and old. It had a good smoke ring but the flavor was bland. They claim Texas style bbq but there wasn’t hardly any salt or pepper on it. I think they probably use their own dry rub that’s lacking in those two departments. The pork was simply inedible. Zero flavor! It was woefully undercooked for proper pulled pork. It was very chewy. It’s like they cooked it to an internal temp of 180 degrees and then chopped it into small pieces. Pork butt is minimum 195-205 internal temp and it will fall apart in your hands. The nice lady asked if I wanted a box for the pork that I took 2 bites of and I said……No. 1/2lb pork, 1/2 lb of brisket, and tea….$34 including tip. Check this one off the list. I won’t be back.

The ribs were seasoned and smoked to perfection. I'm a Memphis girl so when it comes to food I am often disappointed. Big Dave did not disappoint. The sauce is good but I didn't need it. I prefer my sauce cooked on my meat but when the meat is delicious you don't need any sauce. The hotdog was cooked to perfection with a grilled bun. The pineapple lemonade OMG. Don't forget the chocolate cake. Even if you have to take it home for later. I did find the mac n cheese too oily sorry. I'm pretty sure this will be my family's summer station because I have to try the brisket now.

Yelp
Wow. What a great bbq find. We took a ride at lunch and you can smell the yummy smoked meat for miles. We had a variety of dishes and all sampled each others. I loved the pulled pork. The ribs were super tender and that just right amount of seasoning. They have some yummy choices for sauce and my favorite was sweet one. The coleslaw was not too good very bland. Other than that yummy

Yelp
Had high hopes as we entered the restaurant, with great smelling BBQ wafing through the air. After our friendly waitress dropped off the menus and took drink orders, we decided to go with 3 meat platter to sample their goodies for $28 (3 meats, 2 sides). There is a $3 up charge for the sliced brisket, which we opted to do. Unfortunately, the brisket was bone dry, as well as the ribs and one of the 6 small chicken wings and the macaroni and cheese. Fries were crispy and hot. Their sauces were tasty. Dave was the caterer to the Dallas Cowboys and I am sure if he was in the kitchen, we would not have been served what we were. Oh well, this restaurant has been checked off the list. Onto the next !

Yelp
Absolutely great, Been a few times love the sauces and sides. The meats at time can be overcooked depending on the time you visit. But if you love BBQ you wont be disappointed.

Yelp
A true taste of Texas! Stopped in on a Friday with my wife and we both ordered the chopped brisket basket with fries and it was a hands down 10/10 made me miss the southwest great taste great service clean facilities and dining area definitely gonna be my new go to anytime I'm wanting a taste of home if you are in the area it's a must try.

Yelp
Outstanding meal & service for a late lunch today! Prices were fair as well Would recommend Big Dave's without question. Ribs, brisket , & pulled pork all had amazing smoked flavor and the 2 different sauces were delicious but not even necessary. The cajun collard greens were THE best I've EVER eaten. Cajun fries, okra & sweet tea were tasty. Would have loved to try the mac & cheese-looked super cheesy at the next table over! Service was outstanding from Kayla. Kind, helpful, friendly & and beautiful smile! Will definitely be back!!!

Really good BBQ. Ken really liked the beans. I have bbq chicken salad with fresh made sauces! We miss Cactus but glad another good family restaurant took the spot. Go Broncos!

Yelp
I love to support great local businesses, and Big Dave's is the epitome of why. When we first walked in, Big Dave himself walked up and introduced himself, shook our hands and thanked us for choosing to come to his restaurant. He was so kind and genuine and proud of his creations (with good reason!) He was the caterer for the Dallas Cowboys and he serves delicious Texas style BBQ. The meats were great, but the sides were just as amazing! Delicious collards, smoky with a "bite" of heat. Great Mac and cheese- creamy but not "gummy" like Mac and cheese can sometimes be. Great fried okra and baked beans too! Everyone who was working in the restaurant was so nice - it really added to the enjoyment of the meal! We will definitely be back and wish him success with his venture. PS he caters too!!!

Yelp
Wanted to like Big Dave's, even had his grandson as our server, but unfortunately just can't recommend. My usual lunch colleagues and I all had baskets with the Cajun Fries, with two pulled pork sandwiches and a brisket sandwich. The pulled pork (basket- $10.99) was a reasonable portion but both of my lunch cohorts said it was just unremarkable in flavor. I had the brisket (basket- $14.99) which is always my yardstick when rating BBQ. The best thing I can say is that it was a generous portion, but it was chopped and highly sauced, a usual cover for lower quality brisket. No comparison to competition BBQ like Bobby's or SBH or Smoky Dreams, for sure. Both of my friends had water, which they were charged $2 each for. When they asked Dave's grandson AFTER they got their ticket, they were told "it comes out of the same fountain as the soft drinks". As for my bill sticker shock, I was charged a surcharge of $0.66 for using my credit card, and the charge was $0.30 higher than the bill I was shown (sweet tea was $2.80). With the surprise charges and really average lunch, there's no reason to come back.

Yelp
Can't find better BBQ anywhere. The ribs are fall off the bone perfect. Tender juicy chicken. Brisket is just WOW! Loaded hot dogs are amazing. All three bbq sauces make it even better. There is a flavor for everyone. Family business! You're going to love Kayla's personality and her sincere desire to please everyone that enters the door!

Yelp
I seen the smoke and did a full U turn. I got brisket and ribs and it was so juice and tender, the sweet potato and colard greens was amazing ..

Yelp
Big Dave used to be the chef for the Dallas Cowboys so he knows how to put a feed on. I visited his new location in Greenville for the first time today. The ribs were amazing. The barbecue beans and the coleslaw were also top notch. I highly recommend this place for barbecue lovers.

Yelp
Friendly staff throughout the experience -- Dave himself came out and checked on everyone and generally cared and asked about the experience- food was fantastic - the brisket and pulled pork was spot on- brisket was lean- sauces were very good, so good you actually could eat it by itself - the sweet potato casserole is some of the best in the Carolinas-

Yelp
First off the hostess was very friendly and my server, Krystal was very nice. Now to the food. I ordered the chopped pork dinner with Cajun collards and coleslaw. The portions were big. The chopped pork was ok, nothing out of the ordinary. But my order came with sauce already on the pork. And the sauce was very ,very sweet. So I tried just eating the pork on the bottom with no sauce on it. I didn't think to ask, but most BBQ restaurants have the sauce on the table or serve it on the side. A first for me. And my server never asked my preference. The coleslaw was extremely sweet. The best part of the meal were the collards. A side note which I found a little odd, is they have two big steel pods in their parking lot which they sell firewood from. Service was great food very average.

Yelp
Zero stars, worst Q experience of my 58 year lifetime. Food quantity was supposed to feed 3 to 4, 2 at best, 2 sides were only big enough for one the meat was enough for 2 if it was all edible. Food quality, everything was overcooked, chicken had zero moisture left in it, like cardboard. Ribs and chopped pork was crispy to put it nicely. Was charged 10 dollars because I got it to go plus a credit card fee. Steer clear, Texans don't eat burnt meat. Only redeeming quality was that I don't think they used liquid smoke. Dean M.

Yelp
I ordered a pulled pork sandwich plate at 3 pm with no one in the restaurant and it is 340 and still haven't received my food. They gave me my money back, I am disputing the transaction anyway. They also gave me 2 sandwiches, but that is not I went there for, I am so upset with this place I threw the food in trash as soon as I got home!! The food may be good but it is not worth the hassle and headache of being ignored when you are trying to support a new business. Please avoid this place and get your BBQ at the best place in Greenville Mike and Jeff's BBQ.

David H.

Yelp
Dave himself checked on all the customers. He's a neat man with a cool Cowboys background. Wonderful pulled pork and sauce. Baked beans were great and seasoned in a unique and very tasty way. The banana pudding was perfect. I hope they continue to expand and get community support. I felt at home.

Yelp
nothing taste good from the mac n cheese, potatoe salad, and the ribs were very , very, very , dry ,dry dry no moisture in meat

Yelp
This place was GREAT! Went here for lunch with a customer and we felt like family the minute we walked in the door! The staff was wonderful. Big Dave came out and thanked us for coming in. Only complaint, he would not share his secret seasoning on the greens... but I guess that's why it's still a secret! On to the food... The pulled pork was good. The sauces were very tasty! BUT the sides were out of this world! The mac and cheese and the greens were remarkable. Thanks for the hospitality and best of luck with the brick and mortar business. I will definitely be back when in Greenville... and will be sure to bring others so they can experience Big Dave's

Steve F.

Yelp
The people at Big Dave's are great, welcoming and friendly. My pulled pork sandwich was... pedestrian. The pork was somewhat bland, and chopped to within an inch of its life, I believe to make it hold more juices? However it was accented with some very good Cajun crinkle fries. Had they not charged me $2.00 for water I probably would not have done a review.

Michael G.

Yelp
Great family business, me and my wife both got sandwiches (didn't have time for plates), the seasoning and sauces were delicious! Savory tender meat, and the staff (wife, daughter, and big Dave himself) were so personable and friendly.

Phillip J.

Yelp
Can't really recommend after my experience. Cost was high $35. That would have been ok if the food wasn't so disappointing. Drive through was all that was open so no choice but to get it to go. The wait was long even with no one else in line. The sides tasted like they were store bought. The BBQ was incredibly greasy. It was swimming in a pool of fat that washed out all other flavor. Nothing tasted seasoned. I hate it but the only thing that was passable was the sauce. I know this location only recently opened so I hope they can turn it around.
