14 Stellar Breakfast Sandwiches in Minneapolis and St. Paul

"Chef Justin Sutherland’s egg sandwich shop, Big E, caused a bit of a stir when it debuted with a menu of $14 to $17 sandwiches. But these sammies are a full meal, really, more than a breakfast bite — they house whole burger patties (the “Rocket Man”) and hunks of steak (the “It Was All a Dream,” smeared with Welch’s grape jelly). For a classic breakfast experience, get the “Dance Yrself Clean,” a bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwich punched up with Cry Baby Craig’s aioli." - Justine Jones, Joy Summers

The Hottest New Brunches in the Twin Cities Right Now

"Chef Justin Sutherland’s egg sandwich shop Big E, named for rapper Biggie Smalls, has nine hefty egg sandwiches on its menu — everything from a reliable shaved ham and dijon to a surprising combination of steak, American cheese, and Welch’s grape jelly, layered with a fried egg and served on an Oyatsupan milk bun. All of the sandwich names reference Sutherland’s favorite musicians — the “When Doves Cry” sandwich is an edible homage to Prince." - Eater Staff

Excellent food and choices. Cooked to order yet still quick service. The employee was polite and professional. Had the CREAM and When Doves Cry sandwiches. Ingredients felts fresher and healthier than most sandwich options. Will definitely come back to try the other sandwiches. Right next to Grand Ole Creamery for dessert.

Loved the food and the menu! They do a great job a putting a spin on your typical burger. We ordered the “It Was All A Dream”, which was a medium rare steak that was sooo tender🤤 and “The Debate” which was a sweet and crispy chicken sandwich. We also ordered a side of fries, which were perfectly fried and seasoned. My suggestion is to ask the for a side of their curry ketchup for the fries.

Amazing atmosphere with music that is a great Throw back to 90s music scene. Food is 🔥🔥🔥. We had the special, the it was just a dream. and the C.R.E.A.M sandwiches and they were BOMB. The cost reflects the quality of the ingredients. AND was talking with the owner who said most of the ingredients are locally sourced from other local companies. Great way to treat your taste buds while supporting local

Big E has some of the best and unique burgers in Minnesota. All of the burgers have egg in them and it really adds to the flavor. I ordered the Rocket Man (beef and bacon) and the C.R.E.A.M. (Smoked salmon and cream cheese). The Rocket man is a house special and I can see why with its savory goodness. I think the C.R.E.A.M. Might be my future go to. I loved the smoked salmon combo with sliced boiled eggs. The crew was friendly and the atmosphere was chill (great music playing)! I will be stopping in again so I can work my way through the entire menu!

Atmosphere and interior have a nice vibe. Gives me Wes Anderson vibe for some reasons lol. Food tastes good but menu is nothing too exciting (also a bit $$$). Good place for quick bite and if your wallet is feeling a bit heavy.

Love the atmosphere and very kind workers! Both ample indoor seating and a few patio tables. I tried the CREAM, which is a take on a classic lox bagel. Smoked salmon, eggs, capers, etc. Pretty good! 8.5/10! Portion was filling and it’s clear each ingredient is intentional with tons of thoughtful sourcing. A tad too salty for me, but that’s all preference. I tried the banana cold brew, I could use a simple syrup but maybe I should have asked for it. I wanna try to crab sandwich next and will report back. Folks are saying the place is pricey. While it’s certainly not a daily spot for most of us, MN has a terrible shortage of local breakfast sandwich offerings and we should be thankful for more options! Eggs are already expensive, throw in all the local ingredients and high quality meats and seafoods, it’s gonna need to be these prices to survive. I am happy to pay for it again as a fun breakfast hangout. Chef Justin, I humbly request an Impossible Burger substitute option please 🙏🏼 If you made a egg, cheese, and hasbhbrown option, I’d come once a week. St. Paul and Portland both have a lot of us crunchy granola types 🙃

Google
Maybe the sandwich could’ve been bigger, but the quality was for sure there. I wanted to try Big E because I hadn’t gotten the chance yet, so my boyfriend and I came in on a Monday morning and a man was working there alone. He was kind and made suggestions. We ordered, and it took a bit of time but we were so happy to take home 2 crafted breakfast sandwiches and perfect, golden delicious hash browns. If Big E was in a better location, I believe this place would be hopping! It felt like it belonged in New York or something. We will be back!

Google
Freshly made breakfast sandwiches that were really delicious. Lots of different unique sandwiches to try, definitely looking forward to going back. The photo shows the “C.R.E.A.M” sandwich on the left, if you like smoked salmon this one is amazing. And the one on the right is “Her Name is Yoshimi” which was also really good.

Yelp
Surprisingly we found parking right in front. With Grand you don't know what your going to get. I have been wanting to try this place when I saw it on one of my ABC morning shows. It didn't disappoint! It's kinda small, but quaint inside. Packs a cool vibe. Clean. Staff is friendly & knowledgeable about the restaurant history. We ordered our food to dine in. We weren't sure what we were going to do until we got there. Our meals came out fresh and the fries, crispy and hot. I had their take on bagels and lox, which is my favorite breakfast. Best salmon, capers and egg situation ever! Took a bite and all the flavors burst, and the bread was soft! I told my husband this S$!T right here was fire! Exact words! I shimmied my shoulders and hit a high note! He had a bite of his, but felt it was missing something that he tasted in mine. The fries were beer battered and fried golden brown. Didn't need any sauce. I picked this place for my husband. The music was old skool 90's, perfect for us. The name of the sandwiches were "music" names which was cool. The coffee was on point. Didn't have a bitter after taste and the coffee is local. I've seen reviews about the price, but everything is up everywhere, so this is no different. You have options :) My husband did like it, so we'll be going back for sure!!

Yelp
I REALLY wanted to like this place, if only because the staff were so kind. I was excited by their super stylish website but the restaurant itself was sort of a yellow nightmare. The cling film on the windows just cast a weird yellow hue around the place that, if I worked there, would make me quit. I didn't really get what the style was going for; it was like intentionally run-down but also kind of unintentionally so? Why was a booth's bench seat covered in packing tape & stickers? We walked in on a Saturday morning around 11:30 & the restaurant was EMPTY. Not all that shocking since Grand Ave seems a lot more desolate these days, but I was expecting at least 1 other customer to be inside (we thought they were closed when we first walked up). I tried to order the California Love & the staff told me they were out of that & the fried chicken sandwich (can't remember the name & it's not listed on their site). I ordered my backup plan, the When Doves Cry (SCRAMBLED EGG, HUMMUS, WILTED SPINACH, FETA CHEESE)--definitely get points for their fun names. I asked before ordering my coffee what they were out of there, & it was unfortunately my first choice & backup pick: Lavender Buds & Strawberry Switchblade. I love that they serve Misfit coffee, though. --When Doves Cry: this sandwich, to me, was not worth $15. The bun was delicious & fluffy with a nice crisp, but the entire sandwich was a salt bomb. The textures all sort of melded together into a squishy blob between buns, with the occasional string of spinach between the teeth. --Cold Brew: I added oat milk & vanilla & it was delicious! Bummer that they were out of their speciality drinks. --Rocket Man: my husband loves a smash burger & ordered this sandwich; he said it wasn't salty enough & we agree that it also wasn't worth the price. I think this place could be salvageable & I really want to like it, but it's a pass for me.

Yelp
Here's the deal: food was good but overpriced. I'll first say that the staff was very friendly. It felt like talking to a friend instead of an employee. Great first impression. Not to mention, this service was offered when they were short staff (only one person working). The breakfast sandwiches are great! However, it's too much money especially when you consider it's just a bun (not a bagel). The kids menu isn't advertised, but it's available if you have young ones with you.

Yelp
Culinary Bliss at Big E! My recent visit to Big E, curated by the talented Justin Sutherland, was nothing short of extraordinary. As a fan of his appearances on Food Network, experiencing his culinary creations in person was a treat. I delved into the Rocket Man and Dance Yrself Clean sandwiches, each a masterpiece of flavor and thoughtful ingredient curation. I even paid another visit the following week to check out their short term special sandwich named "For All The Dogs" which was an amazing spam sandwich The attention to detail in crafting these sandwiches was evident, making each bite a culinary adventure. Despite the challenge of parking on the bustling Grand Avenue, the fact that it's free adds to the allure of this gem. The staff's exceptional customer service and friendliness elevated the overall dining experience. Stepping inside, the restaurant's ambiance was beautiful. The art, vibes, and attention to every detail created a welcoming atmosphere that complemented the outstanding food. Big E is more than a restaurant; it's a culinary journey where every element, from sandwiches to service, earns a well-deserved 10 out of 10. If you appreciate exceptional food, friendly staff, and a vibrant atmosphere, Big E is a must-visit!

Yelp
Super disappointed by this experience as I was really looking forward to having a good breakfast sandwich. The main problem was the super chewy, undercooked bacon that plagued the sandwich. Don't get me wrong, there was PLENTY of bacon on the sandwich (and for the price point there should be) but it was so chewy and underdone that it made the sandwich completely undesirable to eat. I will say that the service was friendly and the coffee was good. It is a counter service spot so you walk all the way to the back to order and then find a seat. Street parking available on Grand and surrounding side streets

Yelp
I love me a breakfast sandwich, it's like my favorite meal of the day. We had an awesome VIP experience at Big E. The owner was dining in as well so we chatted with him for a bit while waiting for our sandwiches, super cool friendly guy and was super accommodating when our food came out offering little treats to add to our meal. The sandwich I ordered usually comes with bacon but opted for sausage instead and it was fire - that aoli was fire too definitely could smother the sandwich with that, we tried the miso aoli too which was really good. My only snobby complaint was wishing I had an option for bread like English muffin bagel or croissant but the brioche bun was fluffy and delicious. The hashbrown was super crispy and crunchy which is a A+ for me. They have a great selection of drinks as well, this is a great addition to Grand - definitely will be going back to try other sandwiches on the menu.

Yelp
Place is cool. I loved how it was decorated and the yellow glow. The food was ok . Ham was kinda thick. Worth a try espically of you live near by

Yelp
Love the concept! TAKEOUT REVIEW Placed an order online and picked up a sandwich on my way to work. Online ordering was super easy and my food was ready within 10 minutes. I ordered the Rocket Man - burger with egg, cheese, pickles and curry ketchup. It was incredibly messy, but totally worth it. The curry ketchup was a welcomed flavor! While the price point is high, I understand and appreciate that the ingredients are higher quality and carefully sourced. But at $14-17 per sandwich, it would be nice if fries or something was included.

Yelp
Don't come here expecting a fast food egg sandwich. These sandos are next level; thus the price, $14-19. On our first visit we ordered the "Her name is Yoshimi" and "Dance yourself clean." So much going on with Yoshimi, don't get me wrong, it's a great sandwich, the daikon gave it a refreshing crunch but overall seems like too much going on hard to get all of the flavors. The Dance Yourself Clean was loaded with bacon. This sandwich leaned more classic and was really good. We sat outside, table was super wobbly but for summer it was fine. On second visit, I grabbed the special, Deep Fried Frenz" and it was top notch. I had came in with my selection premade but once I saw the special I couldn't pass it up. Wow, the egg was cooked perfectly, gobs of aioli and a generous amount of spam. The flavors were great and the chihuahua cheese crisp gave the sandwich a next level bite. I also enjoyed a brown sugar latte with oat milk, very pleasing. Can't say tasted any ginger in the drink but it was an excellent complement to my sando. Sat inside and had the place to myself on a gray and drizzly Autumn morning. There is an Xbox, not sure if you can play When done you bus your own table. There is a special that included ice cream for Grand Ole Creamery, which is adjoined, will try that next time!

Yelp
As you enter the small shop on Grand Ave, it's all yellow and black, with unfinished wood panels forming booths on either side. Feels very urban, like a food truck that successfully outgrew the streets and moved uptown. With these sparse surroundings, The Big E feels like it's all about the food. A single employee takes our order, pour us coffee and then proceeds to make us two of the 11 menu items, all egg sandwiches. Street parking for free, which is handy. When the food arrives, it's all a hot tasty indulgence. The Dance Yrself Clean is a great bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, greasy and tasty. Dark Side of the Moon is ham, egg, Tillamook cheese and Dijon mustard. Yummy. We will definitely return to further explore this menu. For what it aspires to be, The Big E is terrific.

Yelp
Sadly I was a little disappointed. My husband brought me here after seeing it on TV. I checked out the menu and everything looked delicious!!! I think maybe I just picked a dud if a sandwich (which also happened to be the most expensive). I would not recommend the Her Name is Yoshimi. I think I was expecting some fresh seafood, but what I got was clearly from a can. It didn't smell good, it didn't taste like much.. it was overall pretty bland. The sandwich my husband got- It Was All A Dream- was much more flavorful. The order or fries as huge and delicious. I would come back and try other items. Service at the counter was good, and wasn't much of a wait on a Sunday afternoon.

Yelp
We decided to try this place because we knew it was a Justin Sutherland restaurant. The menu has a variety of sandwiches for both meat and non meat eaters. What I love is that they all have an egg! I tried the Somebody to Love, a lovely sunny egg with house made fennel sausage (delish!), Swiss and dijonaise on the most glorious bun. The egg was cooked perfect. We shared an order of fries because they are quite large. They were also amazing! Crispy and seasoned perfectly. The only thing that I didn't love was the space itself, with bright gold walls and black accents. Very minimal and basic, giving BWW color vibes. We also stopped by at 5:30 and we were the only people in there. Seems to be more morning/brunch spot or later night eats. I would definitely go back to try other sandwiches.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
We were pretty excited to try this and flavorwise we weren't disappointed. My wife had the Her name is Yoshimi which was loaded with nice big chunks of crab and I had the Somebody to Love which had a fantastic sausage patty. We also got the fries(crispy outside and pillowy inside...perfection) as we were skipping lunch. My 2 cents this is really good, Eggslut is better for a little less. I hope they have continued success.
google avatar

Gita B.

Yelp
Lunch here was so good! This is so much more than just a breakfast option. Everything comes with an egg- and all the other sandwich ingredients work around this base to come up with the perfect sandwich. I tried one that is an elevated version of a breakfast sandwich- the somebody to love. The dijoinnaise added so much! Can't wait to try some of the other sandwiches. A bit surprised by some of the comments about the high prices. That doesn't mean they deserve fewer stars. Everything is expensive now! This isn't a fast food restaurant, and the quality of ingredients is superior to nearly any other breakfast sandwich I've had. Definitely check it out.

Yelp
It dawned on me that I hadn't been out for breakfast since last year. But I was out and about early and wanted something decent. This popped into my head and it's in my lower hood. 9:00 and I was the only one there. First thing that hits me is the music. Old fuck that I am the first thing I say to Sky, the manager was Is this supposed to rouse your appetite? He laughed and said it's to get you pumped for the day and I wasn't even awake yet. He pointed out all the meatless items for me since it's the start of Orthodox lent. I got the CREAM minus caper aioli. I loved the warm Japanese style bun with sesame seeds, the black ones. It's not a huge bun, but the fillings are so stuffed it makes it so. I love the brands they use. I was fortunate to have the Tillamook cream cheese in mine that went great with thinly sliced salmon. I was also impressed when I spotted Duke's mayo and Cry Baby Craig's hot sauce. Service is so friendly. Unfortunately I didn't get to meet Justin, the owner. If I'm smart I'll walk down here in the summer.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolute killer egg sandwiches. I had the 'SOMEBODY TO LOVE', doll had the 'WHEN DOVES CRY'. Mine had freshly mad fennel sausage, big patty. Dolls had the spinach and feta. Met Eric and their barista Toby. Both very friendly and knowledgeable. And the coffee was of the same quality as the sandwiches, Misfit, misfitcoffee.com.

Yelp
Big E's restaurant in Minnesota is an absolute gem! The service was excellent, the food was delicious, and the vibe was just right. I especially enjoyed the "somebody to love" - it was a perfect breakfast sandwich. The music added a great ambiance to the overall dining experience. I can't wait to go back and try more of their menu. Five stars all around!

Yelp
Great breakfast sandwiches! And thc coffee if needed. Shares a spot with Grand Ol Creamery

Yelp
This place has a great Bacon Egg and Cheese Sandwich. However at the price of $16 + it's just not worth it. The service is great too. My takeaway is that the sandwich is not filling and it should be at most $8. If I ever see a discount or coupons I'll try it again but the price is just to high for me. I want to be filled if I pay $16 + tip.

Rudy S.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast sandwiches I have ever had. Perfect. . Seriously, I'm still thinking about Unfortunately they don't have any water... for sale or a bubbler. Some water would've been nice with the savory sandwich. No juice either, I thought that was weird for a breakfast spot. Lots of pre packaged beverages which is kinda eh.

Marie T.

Yelp
The food was delicious. I had the Rocketman, my teen had the California Love. We shared an order of fries. Rocketman was solid, the bun was a pillowy delight, egg was cooked to perfection, and the curry ketchup and pickles really brought the whole thing to life. Teen liked her California Love but I didn't try it. We both found the fries good, but not great - we prefer non-battered fries. The service was very welcoming and friendly. Our fries were forgotten so by the time they arrived at the table and cooled down enough to eat, we were pretty full on our sandwiches. I totally understand that mistakes happen, but we were one of only two parties in the restaurant and at this price point it feels more irksome when stuff like this happens. Our sandwiches were served on one tray with no plates - the tray was too small for two people to share comfortably, but the food was very drippy and droppy so we uncomfortably shared the tray anyway, so we didn't make a giant mess directly on the tables. Once our fries arrived on a second tray, we thought - yay two trays! But two trays didn't fit comfortably on the teeny tiny table. So eating still felt physically awkward. Again, at this price point I expect more thought to go into the dining experience. The vibe was fun with fresh colors, an intentionally casual vibe ( graffiti, 90's hip hop that we both vibed on, and TVs playing old cartoons with no sound) that we appreciated. The music was so loud that even my teen with excellent hearing commented that it was hard to have a conversation. As mentioned, super tiny tables. Menu was displayed on a digital screen that flipped between food menu and coffee menu. With so much info to take in, it was frustrating to have the food menu disappear over and over before we could take it all in. There were printed menus available, but they were right next to the register so we had to push through the party that was ordering in order to access them. Our total for the two sandwiches, one order of fries, a San Pellegrino (tap water is not an option), a Coke, and a 20% tip was $53.76. Price would feel fair if everything surrounding the food was better executed, but it was one of those dining experiences where you wonder if they really considered the diner's experience, because it felt pretty awkward and uncomfortable to order, eat, and socialize. Overall, despite really enjoying the food, I won't be rushing back.

Yelp
This establishment features the Best Egg Sandwiches, I believe there are at least 5 or 6 sandwiches to choose. The portions are hefty and excellent presentation. On a scale of 1-4 I'd rate it a 4!

Mark G.

Yelp
Over priced Smash burger with a celebrity chef name added to it. 2 burgers 1 fry 2 drinks $50 Messed up order with 4 people in the place ? Grand Ave dump. Go to Moe's or Shamrocks
google avatar

Erik G.

Yelp
Went there during the soft launch with my 15yo son. He ordered the Rocketman, which he loved, and I had a Dark Side of the Moon, ditto. The grape jelly on the latter pulled everything together. There was a mix up in the kitchen and my son scored another sandwich gratis from the cook, who took pity on a growing teenager. He loved that one, too. We split fries and he ordered a Mexican soda and me a water. Bill came to a shade under $40. There is a lot of mixed press about food and prices here and I guess I don't agree. The sandwiches tasted super great, the fries were yummy, and the music is fun.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Friendly place, the steak sandwich was solid, but 30 (including tip) for iced coffee and a breakfast sandwich won't have this being a regular stop for me.

Cate J.

Yelp
Great music and atmosphere, but the prices for what you get are too high. The fries were perfect. My sandwich was just kind of weird. Super huge, super sweet bun with cold ingredients, aside from the fried egg, inside. My sandwich was delivered to the table way before my friends' food came, so I waited, and by the time I started eating, my sandwich was a cold mess. The place was great and I want them to stay in business, but I kind of want my $20 back. I left full, but not satisfied.

Roxy P.

Yelp
Replaced an amazing Pizza place with a weird gimmick restaraunt. When we asked if they had any drinks besides water they said no but they gave the next guy in line a coke. Fries came out so hot I burnt my tongue, the gaudy atmosphere hurt to be around.
google avatar

Stephen S.

Yelp
It tasted okay, similar size to a fast food breakfast sandwich - and definitely tasted better - but at 6 times the price... hard to justify. If they cut the menu prices in half I might go back and could see the business working out.
google avatar

Stephanie D.

Yelp
We sampled a number of different sandwiches on the menu and enjoyed them all. It Was All a Dream was probably the favorite.

Tom R.

Yelp
So looking forward to a good cup of coffee and a gourmet breakfast sandwich on my first trip to Big E. I got neither. I ordered a latte, much needed. The counter helper gleefully reported the coffee machine was broke. When asked about a regular drip coffee he sighed, said it would take 5 mins. Clearly he didn't want to make the effort. Considering it took 15 mins to get my sandwich, what was the big deal? I then asked about an orange juice. He offered an orange soda!?! OK, just a glass of water please? Ready: "sorry I can't serve you water". No explanation . I did order a breakfast sandwich, can't remember which one as it was that unremarkable. For I Justin Sutherland kitchen I was expecting much more. Perhaps he should stop by the place and see what's going on. Next time I I'll consider a sandwich, order ahead, and pickup a Dunn Bros coffee. Jeez, why so hard?

Joanne M.

Yelp
Not worth the price. Place also needs better ventilation. Came out smelling like burgers and had to wash clothes twice. Not a great experience.

Jim B.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, very fresh and tasty sandwich, nice ambiance, but considerably overpriced in my opinion. I tried the CREAM sandwich: sliced hard boiled egg, smoked salmon, cream cheese, onion, caper aioli, a bit of fresh dill, on a bagel/bun. It tasted just fine, but I question the $17+ price point .

Scott W.

Yelp
I'd put this in the one-and-done category. Was excited to try it but an egg sandwich on a hamburger bun for $15?! I'll drive the extra miles and go to Fair Grounds in the North Loop and get a better egg sandwich for half the price.

Jim B.

Yelp
Get the yoshimi sandwich. Excellent. Nice combination of flavors and a little spice too. I'm just visiting but I'll be back before I leave.

Rachael K.

Yelp
This is the kind of place St Paul has been needing forever!! Really amazing breakfast sandwich with an eclectic menu. Loved everything I had, yes it's expensive but so is everywhere else. This will be a regular stop for us easily.

John O.

Yelp
Staff was very friendly! However paying almost $20 (including 20% tip) for an average bacon egg and cheese sandwich was highway robbery. I have no problem paying money for good quality food but was very disappointed spending $20 on a meh sandwich. This is Saint Paul, not Brooklyn. Gave it a shot but sadly won't be returning. Good luck!

Ben C.

Yelp
Not your mom's egg sandwich. Everything is fresh made to order. Great BIG portions. Menu is so versatile that you can come for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just when you are craving a out of this world egg sandwich. Has a fun urban 90's retro vibe. Will definitely be back with friends!

Jordan and Justin K.

Yelp
Was excited to have this place in the neighborhood, but disappointed and not convinced it is sustainable. Not sure who the intended audience is with such unrealistic prices. The food was decent and good quality, but $60 (2 sandwiches, 1 fry, 1 water, 1 lemonade) is too steep. You can't even get a glass for water- they only offer bottled water (Walgreens brand). Also, no diet options for people who can't do sugar (Kombucha doesn't count). The service wasn't great. There was only one other couple waiting for takeout when we arrived and 4-6 people working. This is counter service and our order took about 30 minutes. The fries came 10+ minutes after the sandwiches. There only seemed to be one person (he was very gracious) actually working on food preparation and service. The others were more focused on chatting with each other. Why is it that Justin Sutherland's other nearby full service restaurant (Handsome Hog) can offer great options at reasonable prices (with fresh local ingredients) but this counter service option cannot? We may try it again if some changes are made. Really wish we had a better experience.
