As a native of South Mississippi, I'm a natural lover of Cajun food. Jambalaya, boiled crawfish, etouffee, gumbo, and boudin are all words in my love language. My wife and I chose to honeymoon in New Orleans for this very reason.
When I saw Big Easy Diner, I took a chance, because I've NEVER had good Cajun food outside of Louisiana, South Mississippi, or Southeast Texas. That is, until I stopped here.
Y'all... This place is LEGIT. The poboy was served on real New Orleans style French bread (something you rarely see). The shrimp were flavorful and piled high. The toppings were true to form (shredded lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, and mayo).
But gumbo is the litmus test for any would-be Louisiana style eatery. And at Big Easy, it did not disappoint. They mixed land and sea with chicken, andouille, and shrimp. The roux was dark. The rice was served on top, not mixed in, and there was more rich, thick gumbo than rice in the cup.
In short, Big Easy Diner reminded me of everything I love about real Cajun food.
