The Newest Restaurants In Chicago

"Big Gay Sal’s is a new pizzeria in Northalsted serving New York-style slices and whole pies. Toppings go beyond the usual suspects of pepperoni and vegetables—expect specialties like mole and BBQ chicken, too. And besides plenty of indoor seating, there are plans for a patio and late-night hours." - john ringor, veda kilaru

I stayed the night at the bed and breakfast next door to this place and they were able to deliver right to my room. The pizza was excellent with a nice chew to the crust and the margarita was delicious and perfectly boozy! Definitely highly recommend checking this place out if you’re in the area.

I absolutely love this place. It’s welcoming, cozy, the employees are warm, and the pizza is delicious - they get this amazing crisp on the crust that I personally crave in a slice and have a hard time finding elsewhere. They offer a chicken mole flavor which I’ve never seen before and is soooo good. I try to visit about once a week but now that it’s getting colder I’ll probably visit more often, hot pizza good drinks on a cold day is a day well spent 🍕

I’m eager to give this place a 5-star rating, but there are a few areas that could be improved. First, let’s talk about the color of the food display. The LED lighting has a cool tone, similar to the lighting used for fish in a market. This cool tone makes the food look unappetizing. I’ve taken 3 separate groups of tourist friend visitors and have walked in, looked at the food, and immediately walked out to eat at Lark instead. Another issue is the alcohol pricing, which seems a bit high. I genuinely hope this place improves and takes the feedback into consideration. The service could also be enhanced.

Big Gay Sal’s is the restaurant/community space I have been searching for my whole life! The location is perfect, right in the heart of everything in Boystown. The decor is so cool, unique neon signs and simple decorations in an immaculately clean restaurant and open kitchen. Don’t be fooled by the cozy interior, you can head right out back to a HUGE gorgeous patio with tons of comfy seating. We were there during pride and they were hosting a bear happy hour! (See the pic from above) the vibes were sooo good, tons of happy people enjoying delicious food and good company! The pizza itself was SOOOO yummy! The crust was both fluffy and crunchy, the sauce was flavorful and aromatic, the cheese extra melty and decadent. There were so many options, but I got the plain cheese as I feel like that’s a great way to test the quality of a pizza place- and they passed with flying (rainbow) colors!! Finally I have to say I had the pleasure of meeting Sal himself while I was there! He was incredibly warm and welcoming, fun to chat with and seemed genuinely committed to not just being a restaurant, but creating community and a safe, joyful, nourishing place for all those who enter. His energy and passion alone is worth the visit and support of this establishment, especially among our LGBTQ+ family! I spent some time researching the plethora of community events they host here, and it is so clear they have a wide variety and are inclusive and welcoming to all. If I lived in Chicago I would be a regular, coming to survivor watch parties, live music and exercise classes on the patio (with a slice and a beer after, for balance). As a visitor to Chicago, it is safe to say I have become one of their biggest fans! I will be singing their praises and telling all my friends to visit for the rest of my life! I look forward to the time that I can come back, spend more time here, and get to know the absolute angel that is Sal even better! 🌈

The new recipe is SOOO good. I knew I had to try it asap as soon as it was announced they changed the crust and the sauce. The last recipe’s crust was not great and honestly kept me from wanting to frequent. However, Sal has listened to customer feedback, invested in a new recipe and honestly it is delicious. Will be back lots more!

First time in and had a horrible experience. Came in and ordered with someone. We waited and he got his 12” pizza after 25 minutes. I had ordered a 10” veggie pizza and fries right after. 10 minutes after he got his pizza, my fries came out. The server goes “hope you enjoy and yall got everything”. I did not get my pizza and mentioned it to him. He looked confused and puzzled. It was clear that it was forgotten. Another 10/15 minutes went by and my pizza finally came out. It looked strange but took a bite. When I tell you the dough was not cooked all the way, the veggies were all raw, and the cheese was warm at best. It was clear it was rushed after it was forgotten. At this point I was upset and more upset that they didn’t acknowledge the mess up and tried to cover it up with a rushed pile of raw veggies. I had to take the rest home and finish cooking it myself. Not a great first impression and probably won’t be back. I should also note that it wasn’t busy inside.

We wanted a light snack before we went on a longer walk so we decided to try a Big Gay Sal's Pizza. I wouldn't say her expectations were very high considering it was just a little place that sold pizza by the slice or whole pizzas along with a few other things. The pizza was all right and reasonably priced for what you get. We also tried the front fries which were surprisingly delicious and perfectly seasoned. The service was a little slower which was a surprise since there was only one other person there when we went around the middle of the day. There's a lot of competition in the area but to have that small of a crowd at lunch on a Saturday is a little concerning. I don't know if we would go again, especially considering I'm a vegetarian and there weren't many options for me. But if I was looking for something on the cheaper side and just to get together with friends without any of the fanciness of another restaurant, I would potentially consider it. Like I said though, there are a lot of other options within walking distance in the neighborhood.

I had the chance to try Big Gay Sal’s Pizza in the new gayborhood, and it was fantastic! My friend and I stopped by for a late-night slice, and we both ordered the Meat Lovers pizza. The pizza was loaded with a generous amount of toppings, and each bite was packed with flavor. The crust was perfectly crispy, and the cheese was wonderfully gooey. The atmosphere was welcoming and vibrant, making it a great spot to hang out. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or a place to unwind, Big Gay Sal’s Pizza is the place to go. I’m looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
I went here last night on my way home from a Sunday Funday. The staff was incredibly friendly! Like from the moment I walked over the threshold they shouted out greetings and were just super nice. I stuck with a basic slice of cheese. The Pizza was tasty and exactly what I wanted. One of the partners was working the register too and again was super friendly. It's nice to see a locally owned and operated place where service is a tenet. I would definitely go back.

Yelp
I can't think of a more convivial topper to an evening of debauchery in Boystown than this popular pizza spot on North Halsted. I believe it's only been open for a couple of months, but it already has my favorite neon sign, "Feed Me Pizza and Tell Me I'm Pretty" (photo: https://yelp.to/npSaHeUUpg). The positive vibe comes primarily from the sunny owner whom I presume to be Big Gay Sal. He was smiling behind the counter greeting all the customers. The pizza selection was pretty standard and sold by the slice. A slice was all Jamie W. and I wanted after imbibing one too many vodka slushies at Sidetrack. I had the Pepperoni (photo: https://yelp.to/jrBaVOBOjo) and Jamie had the Vegetarian (photo: https://yelp.to/iVOD4enXFn). Sure, they weren't artisanal masterpieces, but hey, that wasn't our aim at midnight. Besides, when the staff is this friendly, you just want to hang and stay pretty. FOOD - 3.5 stars...familiar pizza slices AMBIANCE - 4.5 stars...very bright space with a lot of seating SERVICE - 5 stars...it starts with Sal TOTAL - 4 stars...I feel pretty, oh so pretty...and it's open until 5PM RELATED - Exploring Chicago? Yelp
Came here super late on a Saturday (around 3:30am) and fortunately they were open for us. It's getting harder and harder to find late night eateries around this area in a post-pandemic world, but this place that is fairly new came in clutch for us. Staff was friendly (even for that late night hour). We ordered a little pizza and took it home on the train. It was still warm and tasty when we got home. It wasn't a life-changing pizza, but for that hour, anything sufficed. Pizza was still good overall.

Yelp
I've walked by this place so many times, but I'm glad I finally have it a try. The pizza has the perfect crust to toppings ratio! Pictures don't lie... this pizza is big, delicious, and if you like it, definitely get the jalapenos on top. The mozzarella sticks and cheese bread are perfect to begin with. Although we sat in the back, our waitress was super attentive and we never had to ask for extra of anything. The big neon light in the back is really intriguing, and the seating is ample for you and all of your friends. If you want to try something new in boystown, this is the spot to start at!

Yelp
Solid slice spot in the heart of Chicago's Boystown neighborhood. They don't yet have alcohol, but indicated it was coming soon! They have a wide variety of slices and I recommend ordering those as an actual pizza takes much longer. Still working though some kinks but food was solid and staff was super friendly!

Yelp
Exactly what was needed after a night at Roscoes. Tons of options, big slices, friendly staff. And they're not frugal with the parmesan packets. Really met the objective.

Yelp
Say his name! What's his name? "Big Gay Sal!" If you are out in Boystown aka North Halstead and you are looking for a tasty snack, stop at Big Gay Sals. The pizza is delicious, the drinks be poppin, and the service is impeccable. We have been here 5 times since it opened 2 months ago and everytime the food hits and the drinks are great. Please say "hi" to Claudia, Lady Diana or Sal and whether your a T, a B, or a V you'll love the food here!

Yelp
Came in late at night on Sunday. Claudia was our server and was phenomenal. She took care of us and made our visit so memorable. Would def recommend and ask for her if you stop in. Will def be telling my friends about it. Good food options, for meat eaters and vegetarians

Yelp
The food - the crust has not improved since they opened & the toppings are flavorless. Really unsure how hard it is to get pizza this wrong but they need to not focus on the bar & focus on their food

Robert Y.

Yelp
The pizza is amazing. We usually get delivery but the back patio is a sorta hidden gem and the staff is all super friendly.

Yelp
Went for the first time tonight! Pizza slices are delicious and HUGE. Food came out super fast and the staff could not possibly have been nicer. 10/10 service. The vibe is also really cute. I'll definitely come again. Will probably check out the daily specials and happy hour.
