Simply THE BEST fried fish I ever had, EVER!!! I am not a catfish person but the way this was prepared was truly amazing. The breading was perfectly seasoned and perfectly crispy. The fish was not too gamy, had a great flavor and was super moist. The fried chicken wings were also amazing, as were the salmon croquets! Go with a few people so you can order a bunch of items and eat there so you are eating as good is ready. Thank you for doing what you do with the love you do it with! Locals here are very lucky to have a place like this.

Recently moved to the area and was told to go here by a local. I am so glad it did! The food tasted like it came out of grandma's kitchen. I got the smothered pork chops with greens, cabbage, mashed potatoes w/ gravy, and corn bread. The pork was mouth watering 😋. My son got the BBQ rib tips, the creamiest mac and cheese (his favorite item), and corn bread. To drink we had to get their Arnold Palmer (sweet tea & lemonade). Such a meal needed to be finished off with a slice of carmel cake. I knew this spot was gonna be great the moment I walked it because I could smell the soul food in the air! I paid a little over $30 and the portions mean I have a meal for later! If you find yourself over in the Parkland neighborhood, make sure you go to this gem. We'll find out way back, for sure!

We got the baked chicken with Mac and cheese and cabbage. The baked chicken was dry and Luke warm. The Mac and cheese was not good at all soggy noodles and runny, the cabbage was alright. Not my personal preference. My bf got the fried chicken with fried potatoes and Mac. His chicken was juicy and well seasoned, nice and hot. The fried potatoes were really good as well. The banana pudding is more like a yogurt with strawberries and wafers. It was ok but not my type of banana pudding when it comes to soul food, southern style banana pudding. The customer service was great though the ladies were pretty quick and kind. Im from Atlanta so I’m used to real southern style cooking. probably won’t be back

We had the pleasure of meeting the ‘2nd generation’ proprietor and was very pleased with her down to earth manner. The food was served with generous portions and the smothered pork chops were mouth watering! My husband and I made mention we were in town for our anniversary and promised to definitely come back if in the area.

Well this is an odd sort of review because this place is established and has fairly decent foot traffic but the food is at best marginal. Maybe it’s so you can go home and season to taste but isn’t that why you paid for? From this excursion one meal was a pork chop and with gravy, sweet potatoes, mixed veggies and corn bread. Not very good at all but the presentation was nice and the sweet potatoes saved it. Second meal was fried chicken Mac and cheese and cabbage. This meal was apparently seasoned much better and enjoyed. Might be hit or miss but people in the area sure drawn to it so at least give it a try!

Delicious soul food and warm hospitality. We came on a Sunday and got the stuffed chicken breast and dressing, cornbread, collard greens, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans, and banana pudding with strawberries. Everything was delicious and tasted like being back at mamaws dinner table.

This ain't it the smothered pork chops drowned in pale onion gravy topped with large onion pieces. The pork chops are baked has a lot of fat on them. expected them to be fried topped with home made brown 🤎 gravy. and the macaroni last Sunday I had was mushy. The other sides I've had are okay. May the Lord rest Big Momma soul the food is definitely not the same. I ate one time after Big momma wasn't around no more and it was disgusting then I see nothing has changed. Somebody bought me this food after telling them I don't like the restaurant no more since Big momma gone. Guess he thought he could change my mind. I still stand on how I feel looking at the pork chops smothered makes me sick. Not pleasing to even look at.

We wanted southern style food, Big Momma's Soul Kitchen hit the spot. We ordered pork chops with mashed potatoes and mac n cheese. The food was excellent and the service was great!!! I highly recommend this restaurant.

Every sunday me and my boyfriend go get soul food after church. we wanted to try a new spot today so we came here and will never be back .. we waited an hour for our food ( we were never told there was a long wait ) the customer service was so disappointing. We thought the food would be great after we had to wait so long and it was some of the most disgusting soul food i've ever eaten. i got fried chicken, greens and mac n cheese. my mac and cheese was mushy with no flavor, my fried chicken was not crispy , it was soggy and mushy with no flavor and my greens were so unseasoned and had no flavor. for a soul food spot in the west end , you'd think it'd be great but i would never recommend this food.

We waited for almost a hour for baked chicken with stuffing two sides and cornbread. This is crazy work!! When we first arrived we asked how was the service and if this was the same restaurant from the west end. He explain that this was a new company. They bought the business from big mama and her family. Well I guess they should have bought the customer service as well! Waiting a hour for pre made food is sick! The food could be amazing but because of the service my family will not be back! We waited all the time for cornbread. At this point, just give out bread. I would give a 1 star rating.

Very disappointed in the food at Big mommas. Besides the time it took for our food was ridiculous. Of all the food we had the cake was the only thing that was good. Won't be coming back there

They have everything ready for you to pick between already cooked right then. Everything is especially tasty and the people are very nice .friendly. helpful and courteous. The atmosphere is good fun and smiles. I love this restaurant home cooking with a dining experience.

I simply love big momma's food it's that old fashioned southern food. So if your looking for food that reminds you of your momma's food then she definitely it. Also wants to let you know the staff was very helpful as well. Job well done

Had their fried chicken at the Kentucky derby-- there's something about the fried chicken in Kentucky is just *chefs kiss* Perfectly seasoned, lightly fried to a beautiful golden brown and juicy and tender on the inside. Can't wait to come back for more.

took an hour to get my food then when I asked after waiting over 30 mins how much longer they got upset and rude about me asking I wanted my money back to eat else where they said no refunds! when my food came out it was cold and wasn't all the way cooked

When they was at their old location ppl including me would stand in line for a half hour or more to buy food everyone was polite service was very nice but now since they relocated to a new location the food is not as good, it's more expensive you wait for a half hour or more for the food to be ready for you to eat or take out. I was yelled at bc a lady in front of me moved over to the counter to place her order and I moved over behind her and I was yelled at by the owner stating " THE LINE IS OVER THERE YOU NEED TO MOVE BACK TO WHERE YOU WERE!" I simply said that I didn't know where the line was I was just trying to follow the person who was in front of me because I could see that her order was being placed there! It's somewhat different from the other location I just didn't like the way I was being treated, the prices are a little bit more honestly I will not be driving the distance like before just to be treated rudely and then pay more money for the rudeness ijs!

Delicious food like your mom used to cook. Clean friendly and prices are good for your wallet. With everything going up during the Pandemic it's a welcome change.

New location address is 1213 S 28th St. open 12-6 Wednesday to Sunday the food and service was amazing. Sunday had the fried catfish, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes and cornbread all is so amazing. If you are looking for some home cooking but don't want to get in the kitchen this is for sure your place to go. Don't forget the caramel cake and a jug of juice. I have been there 6 times since the move and the service and food is consistent.

I want the today with two friends. I will say this is the best fried chicken I have ever ate! Had cabbage 5 stars also. Recommend it to anyone

Comfort. Food. Every bite just eased the soul. The fried chicken wasn't fresh as I'd like, but I did get there late. Next time I will go earlier in the day. I have heard great things about the sweet potatoes and hope to go when they're on the menu.

I have been here many times and the last two times I was disappointed. Consistency is key in any good business. Compromising and cutting corners is a no no. I had ordered a Baked Chicken dinner and the chicken was more par boiled than baked tasting. The corn bread was undone. I was also missing a side order. I called in to let them know about the incident. I returned feeling hopeful that the food was back up to par. I was again disappointed when I got home and the mac and cheese taste like flour with no cheese in sight. The baked chicken again taste par boiled without touching an oven. The mixed vegetables tasted frozen. I was also disappointed to pay for a side order when they were to replace the side item they didn't give to me the first time. I cringe while writing this review, because this has been a great place to enjoy a down south home-cooked meal. I pray all gets back to normal. Until then I'll cook at home.

I went to Big Momma's Soul Kitchen on 11/10/2021, it was 5:55. I looked online before I went and it stated they closed at 7:00. As I was approaching the door another lady went inside. Once I got to the front door and note no one was behind me, a young lady came to the door, looked at me, locked the door, then pushed on door to make sure it was locked and walked off! I'm a mild mannered person and I saw red. It wasn't 6:00 yet, a simple, ma'am I'm sorry but we are closing would've been fine, something anything. I've seen this young lady before working and she always seems like she's having a bad day. I thought this was so unprofessional and rude, I will never support this establishment again. I've worked in my field for 25years and customer service is nothing like it use to be. I suggest this young lady get some customer service training and I'm sure you'll get better results.

I usually visit the new Big Momma's about once every two months, and that is to order their baked chicken and dressing dinner, the dressing is made similar to what I make at home. I usually order greens or green beans, mac and cheese. I have been to the new Big Mama's six time, my order has been incorrect three out of the six times, twice I was given the incorrect order, the others I was given the wrong vegetable. This Sunday May 21st after church, I checked my order ( I have learned to do this, because of my past orders) they gave me green beans instead of greens, I took the order back, I was asked to let them see the receipt which specified greens, all of a sudden I was called out in front of other customers, by one of the cooks (which I think is one of the owners) . She said I did this "all the time" ( insinuating it was my fault), and for the others at the front pick up station to check my receipt to see if I had changed my order. She was very rude, disrespectful and loud. They checked my receipt and and it stated "greens". They gave me a bowl with "greens", but hah hah, when I got home they still had given me "green beans" ( I should have checked again!!) , I support our black businesses in the West End of the city. The new Big Mama's should learn how to respect and speak pleasantly to their customers. They need to check their egos, God don't like ugly.

I love soul food. I love trying soul food in different areas. I had an event for work so i decided to venture out. They have daily specials. I ordered fried chicken wings, cabbage and macaroni and cheese. The macaroni and cheese was watery. The chicken was great and the cabbage was under seasoned. I paid $9 for this. For a soul food place it is normal, but I felt it was overpriced.

I've had chicken all around the world and this by far is the best fried chicken in the history of fried chicken it is absolutely perfectly seasoned and cooked to a gorgeous golden brown and super delicious!!!

The article in Food & Wine peaked my interest, although I was disappointed. The baked chicken was tender but lacked flavor, while the dressing reminded me of stove top. The meatloaf was good but way too salty. Their macaroni & mashed potatoes was good and creamy & the green beans were flavorful. I did order extra corn bread, although it was just a little too sweet for me. There were a couple picnic tables outside to eat.

This restaurant was one of my favorite until the day came when the daughter of Big Momma was extremely rude and never apologized. I gave them a chance to apologize. So, I spend my money where I can be appreciated. They put too many signs up telling you not to be on phone in line, but some days they have you waiting for long times. Some of the food is too salty, so if you have high blood pressure you shouldn't be eating it anyway. When I shared what happened to me how the daughter embarrassed me while 2nd in line and told me to move my car so she could park her car in front, others said to me going out the door, She didn't have to do you like that! She was digging in her nose in front of the food today!

I am in Louisville a few times per year and have been wanting to find soul food restaurants. This was going to be my second choice today but my first choice wasn't open for another 30 minutes. I got the fried chicken breast and wing, cabbage, mashed potatoes, corn bread and a piece of carmel cake. There was no waiting as I was the only customer. The chicken was seasoned nicely and was good although the breast was a little dry and my sides were excellent. The cake was the only dessert they had and it could have been moister but I don't think it was left from a previous day. I got my food to-go but there were approximately 5 seats total with none occupied at the time. I would love to go there on another day where they have more sides as an option.

I was really expecting some good home cooked food with southern flavor. I'm from Houston, so our soul food is on point there. Anyway on Sunday, I ordered chicken wings (which were amazing), fried fish (it was hard and fishy tasting), greens (lacked seasoning and tasted mushy), and sweet potatoes (flavor was ok), and caramel cake (that was dry). I won't return, but at least I can say I tried the food.

Big Mommas delivered like always! Great cheat meal for me this weekend! Fried chicken wings (3), was what I got even though they told me 4 but it's all good the 3 turned out to be good enough as I was definitely full. I also had fresh greens and sweet potatoes! Yummy! Nothing better than some good soul food on a Sunday afternoon. I hadn't been there in a few years, my wife hasn't been there at all so I figured it was time to try something new and old and it paid off, didn't need to eat anything else for the rest of the day! I read a review that describes it perfectly, a Diamond in the Rough! If you've never been, I highly recommend it!

Man they catered a wedding I attended and the food was PHENOMENAL. Catfish, fried chicken, stuffed chicken, yams, macaroni, veggies, and even the lemonade was a hit.

I asked, "soul food?" and many repeatedly recommended, "Big Momma's", a long time Westend favorite. If my arms are just a bit longer, I can literally touch the entrance door and the order counter at the same time. The place is tiny, the menus are posted at the top. Each day has a separate menu, with fried chicken offered almost everyday. Main entrees vary slightly each day between salmon croquet, ribs, baked chicken, smothered porkchops, fried fish, etc. Lots of traditional side dishes to choose from as you get 2 with each entree. My fried chicken was fresh and delicious, I got at least 4 large pieces of wings and thighs. Mashed potatoes was salty but I enjoyed my cabbage cooked with pork. I ordered sweet ice tea and unexpectedly got a small jug of the best ice tea I've had in a while. My lunchmates did not enjoy their baked chicken as it wasn't flavored well but they are willing to come back for a second try. I would normally give this a 3.5 for food but I like its charm, location and comfort . Definitely give it a try if you're in the area!

OMG! This is an absolute diamond in the rough. We yelped for a soul food restaurant and stopped by to give it a try! And then we went back for a 2nd visit the next day. It has the most delicious food ever. We tried the fried chicken, fried catfish, meatloaf, smothered pork chops, croquettes, mac n' cheese, cabbage, sweet potatoes. So wonderful! We all enjoyed the warm hospitality and even got out picture taken. This is a place where we will definitely let our friends know about!! Great soul food. Friendly staff. Smothered pork chops and rib tips were great, but then the carbs and starches stated to shine when mixed with the abundant sauce and gravy portions. Cornbread in particular was perfect consistency for sopping up the succulent juices. Cashier gave us complimentary mashed potatoes for the baby. Overall ordered a ton of delicious food for an extremely reasonable price.

I've been twice and thoroughly enjoyed my meal both times. I hate, however, no desserts were available both times. I had the catfish, chicken, sweet potatoes and dressing. the dressing was good, although my least favorite. I will definitely become a repeat customers. thanks big momma!!

OH MY GOODNESS! The food here is absolutely amazing. The place might not look like Heaven on the outside, but I'm telling you this is where God would go for lunch. The meatloaf... Smack! The Mac & Cheese was pure majesty. The sweet tea, well, what do you think? Literally everything we got (I took our entire company for the second day in a row) was silly good. Bravo Big Momma! I love that places like this still exist --no website, no advertising, not even a sign out front. If you are from out of town, you end up here on the strength of a local's recommendation (perhaps issued with a subtle, good natured, but completely unnecessary, insistence that the neighborhood and its denizens are "really OK" --this is, still, The South you realize). It's just a concrete shack and a parking lot. Outside, a guy is pumping dirty south r 'n' b and selling mix CD's out of the bed of his pickup truck. Inside, the place is crammed full of people waiting for the young lady to hand them a sack full of Soul Food. You stand in line --which is more like a milling crowd, but it works perfectly. There's a menu on the wall. You eye your food behind a glass partition, where the day's offerings are scooped from trays and placed into Styrofoam to-go boxes. There are two 1970's-vintage microphones (just like the ones they had on The Price Is Right) sticking out of the glass partitions. When it's your turn, you speak your order into one of the mics. There's signs all over the place spelling out exactly how to do this (nb: you may *not* be on your cell phone while ordering). Dinners (main course, two sides and cornbread) run about seven or eight bucks. All listed prices for dinners include tax and are in whole dollars, to make the transaction as smooth as possible. They also take credit/debit cards, apparently a new development, according to one of the signs. When your order is ready, you pay the young lady. Stick a dollar in the tip jar, and spend another buck on a bottled water. Sweet tea and slushies are also available. If you want a soda pop, there's a machine out front for that. Big Momma's is take-out only, but there's a nice park across the street. I got the catfish fillet, with cornbread, mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes. That catfish and the mac cheese were among the best I've ever had, and I've had a lot of catfish and mac n cheese. Yes, the ambiance of the place influences the flavor of the food you're having. That's probably true of every restaurant, but rarely as obviously as at Big Momma's. Other offerings when I visited included meatloaf, salmon croquettes, smothered pork chops, BBQ rib tips and fried chicken. I note from another online source that Big Momma gives out free meals on Christmas Day, because everyone deserves a hot meal served with love on Christmas. Don't ever change, Big Momma.

Stay classy Big Momma's! If this place was zoned in a high property value, half of the west side would suffer from smothered cabbage depression syndrome. Big Momma's is no joke and neither is her food. Here are my notes: 1. John's review hit it on the head. Enjoy your food John. 2. Christina's review is exactly what I expect from a Houston girl. She would get upset if I told her Carolina style bbq is better than Texas' what-have-ya down there. She likes her local grubs and she hates on the rest. "Hate..hate..hate..." 3. If the ride was not so far, I would probably get a side of smothered cabbage on a daily basis. Stuff is simply incredible. 4. Is there a Soul Food Association? This place needs a ribbon or a medal. WARNING: This food made me crap my pants! If you eat healthy food on a regular basis DO NOT eat this food. Here's the deal. When I was out here from California I googled "soul food" because I figured I could get the real deal, and I have no doubt that this food is indeed the real deal of soul food. However, I did not know it would pass right through me and end up in my pants. I got the greens, mac & cheese, chicken, and banana pudding. So when I got down to the bottom of the greens there was a nasty chunk of fat that I am guessing was used to flavor the greens. All of the food was saturated in fat. I guess that's why Momma is big? So, after growing up and living off organic, raw, food that is never friend or processed, this meal was a nightmare for me. I went to bed and woke up from crapping my pants in my sleep. No joke!!! And my gut felt rotten inside!!! Big Momma!!!! Look what you did to me!!!! There are lots of nice country folk that hang out here. I think church just got out when I was getting my food. I was the only cracker there, and they were all so nice to my yankee white ass. The people who were lining up for food, and the people serving it up were so nice and friendly, but the food had the effects of Satan's wrath on my digestive system. Needless to say my pants went in the trash...

When I walked in there were police officers people from the neighborhood brought the food home it was excellent if you want Soul food this is the place to go

I have wanted to experience Big Momma's soul food for years, and finally made the trip there today. The drive from the East End was easy, and the area around Big Momma's is beautiful, passing Chickasaw Park on the way, and with Shawnee Park right across from her place. I got there today at 12:20 PM, 20 minutes after she opened, and I had zero wait. My friend and I ordered, and people started coming in to get their orders in. I ordered two entrees, knowing I would have leftovers, and I wanted to experience two of my favorites. The fried catfish was excellent, with mac 'n' cheese and white beans as sides, and sweet cornbread. The smothered pork chops were unreal, just so tender and flavorful. I had the green beans and the dressing, both of which were excellent, especially the dressing. Big Momma herself took our orders and was as nice as you would expect. The smell of the food hit me before I was 20 feet from the door, and overall, my expectations were met and exceeded. We need fewer chain restaurants and more local places like Big Mommas that make scratch food where you can truly taste the love. I certainly tasted that love today and I will be back regularly now.
