The Best Places to Take Kids Out to Eat in SF, According to Kids Who Love to Eat | Eater SF

"The reviewer marvels at fries “as big as a pencil” and recommends fish and chips: the fish is described as big, smoky, bumpy, greasy, hot, and juicy; the fries are warm, bumpy, salty, crunchy, and slightly burnt in a good way. The dish is recommended as an excellent lunch choice." - Dianne de Guzman

We had a long day with no food in our Kelly's. We found this place on food near me and decided to try it. Food was delicious and service was excellent. We will be going back to try most of the burgers.

Christine Chao

Google
Fried chicken sandwich was a huge disappointment. While I understand that the highlight is the burger, which was solid, that doesn’t mean that other menu items should be disproportionately inadequate. The friend chicken sandwich patty was tiny and cabbage slaw skimpy, for sure not worth the price. I guess if one stuck to just the burger , it would be fine, but one would not have known that the chicken sandwich would be so deficient.

Google
Wandering around SF, we stumbled onto this little burger shop with big flavor. Delicious. The kind of burger you keep eating when you are full because it's so good. I had the Giants burger which is topped with provolone cheese, 2 crispy onion rings and bacon. BBQ sauce on the top bun. Toppings of lettuce, tomato & pickle on the side. I like the assemble it how you like option. Garlic fries were perfect: crispy and topped with fresh, minced garlic. Worth the price. Super friendly woman working behind the counter. She delivered our food to us and told me the Giants burger was also her favorite. I'm still full 9 hours later. I'll be back when I'm in the city.

Google
With SF going through so many changes, it's nice to see that this place is still open and still churning out delicious and dependable burgers and fries. We've got all four food groups represented here: Burger, Bun, Toppings, Fries. The trick is to order the fries extra crispy!

Google
Being my first time I went with the classic Big Mouth Burger medium rare. Big and juicy but nothing that made it stand out as far as in flavor. Fries were good, nice and crispy. Environment was peaceful and clean. Overall I will return to try other things on the menu like the SF Giants burger!

Google
Ordered delivery. The burger came as described. Perfectly cooked and big. It was juicy and had a great flavor. Despite being big, it was easy to eat. The onion rings were good, but average. I think they were frozen and then fried. The milkshake I had arrived the perfect consistency and had a great flavor. Portions are well worth the price. I’ll be back!

Google
The service and the burgers were excellent!!😋 We were apart of a large family group, they webt over and beyond to show kindness! We had delays in the burial of beloved Bae of 94 years, the burial was delayed a few hours so we went to Big Mouth Burgers and are really glad we did. Thank you for being so curtious and patient. We will visit again!!

Google
Great Turkey Burger, great Fries, great Golden Nuggs. No frills but very homie. I also went to the San Bruno location. They were also delicious, super friendly with lots of regulars.

Yelp
Absolutely enjoyed this restaurant so much! It was recommended to me by a local in the area, and it did not disappoint. I've tried this spot before, but I'm so glad I gave it another chance. I definitely recommend eating at the restaurant because I can imagine it would get soggy on the drive home because of all the yummy sauces and fresh veggies on it. I personally got the OG big mouth burger, and it really is HUGE. Barely could fit my mouth around it, but I made it work and it was delicious. My friend's blue cheese burger was great too, and the mastery of pairing blue cheese and pesto is soooo good YALL GOT TO GIVE IT A TRY! Interior is nice too, just a classic burger joint. Staff is kind and patient. What more could you want, give it a chance!!!!

Yelp
Fried chicken sandwich was a huge disappointment. The friend chicken sandwich patty was tiny and cabbage slaw skimpy, for sure not worth the price. I guess if one stuck to just the burger , it would be fine, but one would not have known that the chicken sandwich would be so deficient. Got carryout so ambience wasn't a factor. There was quite a wait for our 2 burgers and chicken sandwich so not the quickest service.

Yelp
Love this place the food is so good. My aunt got a salad for me and it was so good the chicken was so juicy. And then the next day I went and got myself a burger and it was so good the meat was so juicy

Yelp
I was at the end of Valencia at a medical visit and decided to walk on Valencia after. Found Big Mouth Burgers and decided to try it. I had a kid's burger with cheese and fries. It was a good burger and I wanted to eat. Has a fun menu, but it's a bit much.

Yelp
Wanting to taste an old fashioned burger, I recently stopped by..due to seeing an open parking space. I ordered the Big Mouth Burger with cheese, and their standard fries...to go. It did come to $19...but everything is expensive these days. I loved the food...and will be back.
google avatar

Kenneth R.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. I love the selection of different burgers. I have tried most of them. They even have Fish & Chips. They are very good. But besides the food being good, the people are friendly. They used to have beer on tap but after the pandemic, it's gone. You can still get cold beer. Give it a try. I love supporting local businesses.
google avatar

Yelp
I've gone back many times after my first review and service has gotten so much better. It's one of my favorite burger joints in the city. I always take friends who are visiting from out of town. Highly recommend their garlic fries!
google avatar

Hugh M.

Yelp
One of my favorite secret spots in the city they have some of the best foods you'll ever try. I really do mean this. If you're reading this review go order any sandwich you won't regret it. staff is great and environment is nice.
google avatar

Lizzie G.

Yelp
Hahaha i get made fun of because i always give exactly the time frame and it's been 20 years since i was last here and the service was great then and still is and more options but also lot more Expensive now. They now changed a credit card fee 3% of ur meal and they give discounts if u paid with Cash and it's next to the register. I got the the Giant Burger and was too much for me and got Regular fries not Garlic and it was really Yummie Tummie!
google avatar

Anna P.

Yelp
The burger was a tad pricey for a burger meal. My plate was $20 and I got the big mouth burger with onion rings. Everything was fresh, and the onion rings were coated in this beer battered. I def should had tried their other options since they would had been better
google avatar

Miranda F.

Yelp
Just came back from the restaurant. I paid 43.45 for the worse turkey burger I have ever had. It was extremely dry and tasted nasty. I would of sent it back, but I was there with a client, I had taken out to lunch for their birthday. They seemed ok with their food. My turkey with blue cheese and lettuces wrap was on worth $16.00! I still have the taste of that nasty food in my mouth. I remembered when Big Mouth first opened up, it was so much better, and the price was fair.
google avatar

Sharon B.

Yelp
Ordered the small mouth burger which was a perfect size and very tasty. The fries were also very good.
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
What happened here? Was good back in the day. 16 dollars for a small mouth burger and i got food poisoning. I'm certain because it was the only thing I ate that day. Terrible food and was sick for two days.

Yelp
we had always loved their garlic fries but been years since we ordered from there now I hat I take BART to/from work we decided to try again husband had the Big Mouth burger on French roll and he said it was pretty good and good portion I had the fish and chips (crispy outside tender inside- wish they also have malt vinegar but at least the tartar sauce is on point and the coleslaw it came with was just so-so as I am not a coleslaw fan) we both substituted the regular fries that comes with our meals with their delicious extra pungent garlic fries if $2 extra each I know we will be ordering again when we crave the garlic fries we also want to try the cheesesteak sandwich and their Hangover burger

Michele F.

Yelp
We ordered fish and chips and a beyond burger for delivery. It was fast/efficient delivery service but the food was cold and awful. The bun was so old and stale it fell apartn opening the wrap. There was absolutely no mayonnaise or any type dressing on it so it was super dry. The cheese was cold and congealed. The fries were cold and soggy. The fish and chips were burnt. The only good thing was the Cole saw. I do believe they owe me my money back.

Yelp
Came here for a burger and fry on the weekend. I checked the menu and was really excited to see onion rings listed so I got that instead, along with a veggie burger dressed as the pineapple teriyaki burger. My partner got the fries and the Big Mouth burger. The price was really good, we weren't even aware the menu options included a side at first! The food came out fast and it was super piping hot, right off the grill. We jumped in right away though, everything looked so good. The rings were hand battered and fried, the fries were fresh cut and potatoey and crisp as could be, and the burgers were just to die for. The pineapple was hot and juicy and went perfectly with the teriyaki sauce, sweet but not overdone. My partner felt like his burger could have been cooked a bit rarer, but he hadn't asked for it... he definitely wants to return though and will request it. We ate everything that was on our plates and didn't feel like we'd overeaten at all. It was just the right amount of food and everything was perfect. We're definitely returning to try other things on the menu!

Yelp
Big Mouth Burgers never disappoints. Been coming here for years, when Pops and I want delicious burger and fries (sweet potatoes and garlic fries) we order from here. The Giants Burger (with bacon) and Hawaiian Burger are our all time faves. Highly recommended. Oh btw, service is always good too.
google avatar

Elecia S.

Yelp
It was a little hole in the wall. I've heard good things about it. I honestly didn't think it was that great. It was a blue cheese burger with garlic aioli. The service was not bad but the wait staff was rather indifferent. Not a bad experience but not one I would go back for again.

Yelp
The words on the awning beckoned: "Burgers & Beer". I was expecting more beer, less burgers but that was before I saw the name of the place. It's an old-school burger joint with many nods to today (Salmon Burger, Beyond Burger, etc.) but not in ambiance. Having only a short window of time to eat and drink, three of us shared a Basic Burger ($10.95), a Blue Cheese Burger ($11.95), and beer on tap. Each burger comes with choice of fries, beans, slaw, or salad but I sampled only the fries. Big Mouth Burgers is a welcome find in that it proves it's still possible, in 2018 San Francisco, to eat, drink, and depart full even when you have only $20. It's the opposite of fancy but it gets the job done. Failing to fully research the menu before ordering at the counter, I missed the opportunity to swap out the standard bun for something more personal and the chance to add a cornucopia of different toppings all at no additional cost. Keeping this simple and direct, I'll say this: These burgers aren't the bomb or the last word in burgers but they're decent and get the job done and the same thing can be said about the fries. I'd not seek out BMB but if I were in the 'hood and hankering for a burger, their's will do.

Yelp
Man, I love you guys (especially your milkshakes omg) but every time I come you're closed before 9. What is up with that? Showed up as early at 8:45 and you're already closed. Maybe just change the opening hours?
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here a few times before but never had a chance to review this place. Since I was craving for a burger and some fries, I decided to order delivery. My boyfriend and I decided to order a lot of food so we can have fries for snacks later on. Big mouth burger with regular fries (5/5) - My boyfriend really enjoyed this. Salmon burger with garlic fries (4/5) - I was pretty content with my salmon burger. I wanted a light burger since I knew I was going to stuff my face with lots of fries and onion rings. The burger could've used a bit more sauce though. The garlic fries cut were pretty thick. I think if the cuts were thinner, the garlic fries would taste a bit better. Onion battered rings (5/5) - Delicious! I enjoyed it with the tartar sauce. Sweet potato fries (5/5) - Our favorite fries out of everything we ordered. Highly recommend! Coleslaw (3/5) - The spicy horseradish mustard taste was too overpowering for the coleslaw, so this was difficult to eat. Although we didn't get the full experience dining out vs. dining out, we enjoyed our meals and were very pleased with the portion sizes and prices. We were able to eat our fries for the next two days haha.

Yelp
The one in San Bruno is better. I bought the garlic fries but they came with a long ass hair in them. HAIR!! I won't be going back. Just go to the San Bruno one instead.
google avatar

Yelp
This place delivers a solid burger at all hours. The burger variety and themes are impressive--it reminded me of a slightly less creative version of Ike's SF-themed menu, but I didn't feel that the burgers delivered fully on their theme. My Hawaiian burger with teriyaki sauce and grilled pineapple could've used a funkier sauce and some extra ingredients, and the juice from the pineapple made the bottom of the burger very soggy. They also are fairly expensive, and though it isn't clearly advertised on their menu, all their burgers come with fries (type of fries depends on the burger). For seating, there's around 6 tables inside with 4 counter window seats.
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Sad there isn't a location in Millbrae any longer but when you're looking for a burger with bacon and a fried egg this is the place to go. The Hangover burger is my go to along with either onion rings or sweet potato fries. Their salmon burger with aioli is also a sleeper hit - when I am not wanting a delicious cheeseburger that one is top notch. They have a variety of kids menu items like the small mouth burger for those with a small appetite or a small... mouth :). Really the only non-chain/local chain burger place I know of and pretty pretty pretty good.
google avatar

Ellie-Eleanor H.

Yelp
My favorite burger spot in the mission. Especially love the Hawaiian burger but they're all good.
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
I've been here 3 times and I have a great experience every time. The woman at the cash register is always so friendly and happy to answer any questions. They have a very impressive menu and have options that everyone can enjoy, even if you have food sensitivities/restrictions. I'm actually impressed with the substitutions they have like gluten free buns and vegetarian patties. A lot of my friends are vegetarian and it's nice to see a restaurant that has more than 1 vegetarian dish. The tables are always very clean and the food doesn't take too long to come out. Their burgers are always cooked to perfection and they always provide plenty of toppings on the side so you can assemble it yourself. I usually go with their original burger and just have them add bbq sauce to it. But they're always adding new things to the menu which is cool. I 100% recommend their onion rings, they're the best ones I've tried in SF so far! Their portions are pretty generous and I think it's definitely worth the price. This is becoming my favorite burger spot in SF and I can't wait to bring my friends here. Also they have a gender neutral restroom here so that's nice to see too!

Yelp
This is a very good burger joint in the Mission District on 24th street. I heard this place had good burgers and I had to try it. The burger was delicious. I had the hangover burger since I woke up with one. The garlic fries were good. Big portions of fries. I will try the other burgers next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Yeh, you're gonna get a whole mouthful of flavah here. Think In-N-Out Xtra large. Seasoned patty, melty cheese, lettuce, pickles, red onion and juicy tomato - on a buttered, grilled bun. Take a big, fat bite of that! Plenty of toppings and protein or veg choices. They've got fish and chips, too. Sides of regular fries, sweet potatoes fries or coleslaw round out your meal. If you want salads, they got em. Greek salad topped with warm, freshly grilled chicken, had the right mix of acidic, sweet and salty, with plenty of crunchy cucumber, feta, red onion and Kalamata olives.
google avatar

Michael E.

Yelp
I like big mouth a lot. It's been ages since i've been to this location though. Their burgers are pretty good, and you can get exactly what you want.
google avatar

Monika R.

Yelp
2nd time I come here at 8pm and they tell me it's closed today I literally walked in and they started speaking In Spanish (I understand) then they said closed it's only 8:35
google avatar

Carmen P.

Yelp
Great burgers that come with thick cut fries (although a tad soggy when ordered delivered). The guys loved the classic that was juicy but the girls thought their greek and green salads with grilled chicken was a tad bland. Not bad for $11 a burger so definitely great for the pocket. Great selection of burgers too and cater for those that don't eat meat.
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
This place has the best burgers in town! Between the three of us, we ordered two salmon burgers, and the Blue Cheese burger. Everything was cooked to perfection. The burgers are huge, juicy, and full of flavor. Everything is very fresh and made to order. This place is a little hole in the wall restaurant, and nothing about it is fancy. But the food is absolutely delicious and worth every penny! We stop here whenever we come to San Francisco. On this trip, we actually ate here two days in a row! I wish we had a Big Mouth Burgers where we live! Also, they were all wearing masks. They and their customers were being very Covid-safe. They were keeping the tables clean. The person who took our order was very helpful and friendly.
google avatar

Isis M.

Yelp
This is my fav burger spot in SF. They have everything from beef burgers to salmon burgers. I personally love the turkey burger. I dress mine up with the standard lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and add an onion ring for crunch. I also request BBQ sauce to create my own BBQ burger. It's a great burger stop, whether dining in or taking it to go.
google avatar

Bryan M.

Yelp
we got burgers to go from this place and a few things. I got the hangover burger and the total came out to be around 20 dollars. 17 for the burger and 3 for the tip which burger alone is pretty expensive. the burgers themselves took a long time to make but I find this pretty understandable considering only one cook was there and they were pretty thick patties. other than that the burger itself was amazing. it even came with fries. I don't know if i can afford it again but if I can I would go back
google avatar

Yelp
Big Mouth Burger. What a disappointment! After reading and rereading all the raving reviews, I just had to ask if I was at the right place. Surely not all the Yelpers would have bad taste, so did I come on a bad day? Seriously, I'm so upset that I need to go back for a revisit just to make sure! Where the F was my fine tasty juicy burger???? The standard Big Mouth burger is $7. Comes with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, a choice of spread and choice of bread. Cheese and other toppings are extra. The burger is at a decent size, and loaded with a pile of thick cut fries. I was excited to take my first bite! But instead uuuuugh! The pattie was sooo dry, I had to load it up with ketchup. Then I had to add pepper since it was almost tasteless. *mad mad mad mad mad*
google avatar

Rebekah T.

Yelp
Sometimes I think that today's fast food has ruined the concept of a real hamburger. A real hamburger should have quality ingredients, prepared and cooked to your order, not a meat-blend burger with soggy veggies, pre-heated, pre-packaged and ready within a minute. I guess this is why I dont eat burgers that often. Big Mouth Burger is all that it claims, it's one BIG burger served with big steak cut french fries, (Fries so big you wonder how big the actual potato was). I couldn't even finish my meal, although I was starving when I sat down. Next time I am upgrading it to a Bacon Big Mouth Cheeseburger, then and only then, will I be in Burger Heaven. Well maybe add a Mitchell's Ice cream Shake....
google avatar

Yelp
You ever into the Smiths? "Big Mouth Strikes Again" was like an awesome song in the 1980's. I used to dance to it with my Flock of Seagulls hair and Linda Evans shoulder pads....I could flip my disco now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5CltsEN8DQ&feature=related Flash forward two decades later, give or take, and here I am at Big Mouth Burgers. Big Mouth strikes again. But it doesn't look like a club where the Human League and Spandau Ballet would hang out. Nope, it's really more of a working-class burger joint with furniture bought from a fire sale at Frontier Village. Whatever happened to Frontier Village, by the way? Anyway, a hearty burger can be found here. I had the $6.40 Big Mouth Burger which was definitely a good portion of beef cooked medium. You get your choice of breads, spreads and extras. Not quite the variety found at Custom Burger but not the same price either. I went for a toasted French roll with spicy chipotle mayo and a slice of melted pepper jack cheese and a few sauteed mushrooms for good measure. The cheese and mushrooms did add $1.90 to the tab, but you do get a nice side of tasty steak fries, or if you're some health nut, you can have cole slaw or baked beans instead. I like the vibe in here, very casual with a lot of locals just hanging out, and the service is good. They are very good at giving you the stepwise directions in ordering if you're a rookie like me. It's very conveniently located a block up from the 24th Street BART station near Valencia. And as Morrissey wisely said... Big Mouth, oh ... Big Mouth, la ... Big Mouth strikes again And I've got no right to take my place With the Human race Oh... FOOD - 4 stars...a good burger with a lot of optional toppings for extra...I usually hate steak fries, but these are good AMBIANCE - 3 stars...Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone would like those wooden tables SERVICE - 4 stars...patient and friendly TOTAL - 4 stars...always nice to find another burger option in this vegan-crazy city

Yelp
How McDonald's (just a block away) stays in business with Big Mouth around is a mystery to me. Even if you count my $10.06 tab for Bacon-cheddar cheeseburger with fries and two cans of coke as high,,, what you have to realize is that you get more that two times the food that the same $10 would buy you are McD's. So two people could buy a burger and split it for a completely satisfying meal. The food is 10 times better as well. The burger what just what I needed. Meat was perfect. The bacon was a little to crispy for the way I like it but was still very good. The bacon definitely was not burned in any way. The cheddar cheese was a peferct match for the rest of the burger and there was plenty of the both the bacon and the cheese. The veggies were fresh and dawm good. Purple onions!! MMMMMM! Have a look at my photos. The cheese is oozing down the side of a tall patty. A patty that other so-called burger joints put in the picture for advertising then yank it off the plate right before it's send out to you. Big Mount delivers the same huge burger tasty on your plate as I had on mine. The steak fries were the only questionable bit. I thought they were a little to greasy. But you know what? I still ate 3/4 of the fries anyway! They have soda and beer if you are looking to kick back a brew with your cow. If you an SF dweller looking for a great charbroiled hamburger then get off yer dead one and get over to Big Mouth Burger. If you take public transit it just a block west from the Mission station on 24th. If you are taking the highway (101) get off on Chesar Chavez. Turn left on 24 th and go about a mile. They are on the right hand side of 24th (north side). While they aren't Val's (Hayward), Big mouth still makes one tasty burger. I am going to give them 5'ver just becasue this is a Bay Area burger place you should visit if you relish great burgers.

Yelp
Lo and behold, in the mist of the slow but sure yuppie-fication of a neighborhood I grew up in. A nice burger spot is here among the tartare eating, Perrier drinking crowds who have taken over this area. It's Tuesday night, I'm still rubbing my eyes from my afternoon nap. I need a place I can just throw on my bummy jeans and my baseball cap. A place I can watch a little NBA game while I eat. Where I can drink out of a can like I do at home. Big Mouth burger is that place where you can be comfortable, nobody here is gonna be pulling your chair out for you. Many burger choices to tickle your burger fancy. Salmon burgers, chicken burgers, vegetarian burgers, and of course what you really should get if your going to a burger spot, ground beef. I had a hangover burger. That is a fried egg with bacon on top of the burger. Really? Is there any better way than to go over the top? I mean if I wanted a normal boring burger, I'd go to In-N-Out. No. Give me a cholesterol filled, artery clogging bundle of joy to wrap my hands on and stuff my face with. Along with that I had onion rings, the best I've had in a long time. And just in case guilt of your high calorie meal hasn't hurt your conscience, there's the always delicious sweet Mitchells ice cream to refresh you after your savory burger. A pretty good dinner for a tuesday night if you ask me.

Yelp
I didn't try a burger, but these guys have THE BEST french fries I've had in a long time. Granted, I like mine "well-done." Some of you pasty fry people may call them "burned." They're just brown though, and brown is beautiful. Very reasonable prices too. A big bag of fries is $2.50. Kind of a hole in the wall, but they have some good beer on tap and a TV to watch a game. Not a bad place to hang out, and a nice break from the general pretentiousness in the area. No pretenses here.

Auri M.

Yelp
I love everything giants burger for the win everytime and the garlic fries are authentic as hell ! Been coming here since a teenager

Yelp
Ordered $51 worth of food that wasn't Prepared as requested . Specifically asked for no Mayo as my son is allergic to it - yet both burgers arrived smothered with Mayo

Yelp
I've been a customer since it opened and still my go to burger & grilled chicken sandwich spot. Everything is fresh and they're consistent.

Yelp
I really enjoy this place. I usually go to the one in San Bruno during work, but I decided to try this place closer to home. It is pretty much the same as the San Bruno location (menu-wise). The food is AMAZING, and the service here is great. Everyone we talked to was so nice. I ordered the turkey burger with avocado on a wheat bun with sweet potato fries. Absolutely loved it - the mayo really helps make the turkey burger moist. Highly recommend this combo. Overall, anytime I'm craving a burger, I'll definitely try to come back here :) Check out the San Bruno location if you're ever in the area as well!

Yelp
Asked for a side salad with one burger and was told "they're included" this turned out go be burger toppings in a separate bag. Also ordered a kids burger and then was told the person "didn't hear my order clearly" so they charged me for the full sized burger. Decent burgers but way overpriced and terrible service. I won't be back.

Yelp
Yes please. I go here any time I am in the neighborhood. Excellent classic burgers. The sweet potato fries are delightfully crisp. I like to eat oat one of the three convenient outdoor tables. The view of the bus stop is nothing to sing about, but the outdoor service is good. It is harder to maneuver inside. The entry is flat, but the door is heavy. It is hard to tell there is someone at the door from the register area, so they are not good at opening the door. The ordering counter is a good height, but the tables are close together.
