Wow! I was so lucky Ray decided to stay open today since it was raining earlier. His food truck, Big Smokey's BBQ, popped up on New Chastain and Canton Rd. and I decided to try it as a snack.
First off, Ray is super friendly and we got to talking about BBQ. He comes from Texas and he brought that great Texan BBQ flavor with him. Of course I had to get the chopped beef, which was the brisket, that I feel Texas is famous for and woowee is it good! The meat was so tender and juicy, which is something a lot of Georgia BBQ joints just don't get right since they cut all of the fat off. Ray also puts his own special dry rub on that doesn't overpower the meat with saltiness or too much spice, but rather accentuates the natural flavor. He also makes his own sauce, both spicy and regular, which were very good mixed.
This is possibly the best chopped brisket sandwich I've had in a very long time and I'd love to get a platter of just sliced brisket next time with some sides. Unfortunately we will all have to wait patiently as Ray gets his operations rolling since he just got started here with his wife. I can't wait to have their full menu like they do at their original Texas restaurant. They will have collard greens, mac n cheese, fried chicken, and the thing I am most excited about: fried ribs!
Ray's BBQ truck is only open on Saturdays near Jake's fireworks off Bells Ferry Rd. And on Sundays at the Canton rd and New Chastain rd crossing near the Jamaican restaurant Coconutz. If you happen to be nearby, I highly recommend stopping by for a bite. Tell Ray The Oguni sent you!* [wink wink smiley face]
(*Just so you know, doing this will get you nor myself anything.)
