Big Wig Tacos

Delicious! We had the fire grilled chicken tacos and quesadilla! The hot sauces complimented the flavor of the dishes as well! Would definitely eat there again!

Came here for lunch by myself, the tacos were perfect, rice & beans were too salty in my opinion. $17.86 for 3 chicken tacos and a side of rice & beans. I told the cashier I wanted to dine in, but I’m confused why he brought the tray to the table in front of me but I had to pick up my tray from the counter to bring to my table. It’s not a good look for service consistency.

Two years ago, I got severe food poisoning from a case of norovirus that the CDC traced back to Big Wig; it was during a $1 burrito promotion and hundreds of Northwestern students were severely sickened. A few went to the ER with 105 degree fevers. It was the worst food borne sickness I’ve ever had. I messaged the owner on instagram before the news broke on local and national outlets and asked if any workers had been sick, and he denied any food borne illness claims until the news finally broke that dozens of students had been sickened. When I went to the student health services just before Thanksgiving, they asked me immediately if I was one of the Big Wig cases. I’m told that the owner settled with some of the injured students who threatened to sue but I wasn’t in on it. Anyways there are obviously better options for authentic and inauthentic Mexican food within a couple blocks and I never went back there again. The staff are nice and work hard.

I tend to go late at night and the open late hours are so convenient!! I normally get a Chorizo burrito but this time I opted to get a Chorizo Quesadilla. And I was not disappointed!! Hands down the best quesadilla I ever had!! Big Wig never disappoints!! By far my favorite place to go for Mexican food!!

a spacious area with a variety of toppings available, but honestly these were some weak tacos in terms of size and still $4... You're basically paying for the location.

My chicken burrito was soooooooo good, and and surprisingly big for the price. The place was clean and had quick service. The workers were very nice and friendly. Bathroom was clean. Everything was great, I'm definitely going back!! I would have taken a picture, but I was hungry and it was too good to stop!

Never felt so welcome to start this review. The cashier was a doll and genuinely one of the best Mexican food spots I've ever had. The steak was above and beyond and once again the hospitality made me feel like I've gone there for years.

First time visit, greeted with a smile. Cooked to order. Got a veggie burrito. The ingredients were VERY fresh, proportioned well and I like that they crisp up the tortilla just a little bit. Oh and that red salsa, amazing! This is what downtown Evanston has been missing! Blows the competition off the planet! And they are open late on weekends. Can't wait to work my way through the menu!

This restaurant is a nice establishment to grab fast casual Mexican food. It's counter service, and the ordering is easy. You select your choice of protein, then select how you want your protein to be consumed (i.e., in a taco, burrito, bowl, quesadilla), and then you select your toppings. The menu options include choices of sides and beverages. On my recent visit here, my party and I received good, friendly service. The restaurant was clean and brightly lit. We ordered a chicken burrito with everything in it, a veggie bowl with no rice, chips n queso, and a kids' meal that came with taco, chips, and a drink. The food was ready in a timely manner. It tasted good. The burrito was huge and filling. The accompanying salsas were flavorful. The veggie bowl and the chips n queso were tasty and delicious. We enjoyed our meal and had a nice experience. I would definitely go back to Big Wig if I am near this location or their other locations.

Management and staff were both very helpful in promptly fixing an issue with the system properly applying a discount. Tacos were great and generous portions for a reasonable price, with lots of options for customization. Food came out pretty quick despite our big order!

Definitely putting this into my regular rotation! Food was a good price for how filling it was, and sooo yummy. Not usually a big carne asada fan, but it was killer here. Guy working the cashier was really nice and helpful, very good energy! (:

We had another great yelp experience at Big Wig Tacos and Burritos in Evanston. The menu could not be any simpler or easier to understand. First, you pick from Skirt Steak, Barbacoa, Avocado, Chicken, Veggies, Chorizo, or Mahi Mahi as your protein. Then you pick your vessel: Tacos, Burritos, Quesadillas, Nachos Bowls, or Tortas. Lastly, you can order a side of: Rice and Beans, Chips and Salsa, Chips and Guacamole, or Chips and Queso. They also offer fountian drinks, Orchata, Hibiscus Tea, and Jarritos. I ordered a bowl with Skirt Steak, Rice and Beans, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Sour Cream and 2 Cheeses. The bowl already comes with rice and beans, so you do not need to order a separate side of this. The steak was cooked very well and the portions in the bowl were large. In fact, I almost did not finish my bowl, but it was so good that I managed to finish it. To drink, I had a hibiscus tea that was really delicious and refreshing. All orders are made fresh to order in an open kitchen. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they have two other locations, one in River North and one in Logan Square. Owner/Chef Jose Estrada explained how he came up with the concept and recipes for the restaurant, and boy, are we glad that he did. We will be returning to Big Wig Tacos and Burritos and checking out their other 2 locations too!

This was my first time at Big Wig Tacos, and it certainly will not be my last! The food here is wonderful, very tasty and fresh. All of their food is made to order. The ordering process is very easy. You pick your protein, then your vessel, and then you pick your sides and drink. I had the three skirt Steak tacos with onion, cilantro, and cheese. I also had a side of chips and guacamole with an Horchata to drink. I thought the meat was great, others might say it was a little bland. But, I believe Chef Jose knows exactly what he is doing because he is letting the customer customize their meal with their choice of their delicious sauces. Yelp has helped me discover another great fast casual restaurant.

The wife had an a-ok and good sized chicken taco from here for $3.60. Their chicken taco vessel ($10.80) consists of 3 tacos but you can just order one taco if you like and as she did. Their dining space is calm and airy and an uncrowded weekday lunch was a pleasant experience here. Parking in the area is metered street parking for $2 per hour.

We had a great time trying big wig tacos and burritos. Wasn't sure what to expect when we got there. The manager was really nice and explained some of the menu and he also reviewed the more popular items. We got chicken burrito, chicken taco kids meal, steak taco kids meal, and happy hour margaritas, which was half price. The kids meals had good portions. My kids are spread out in ages and the kids meal was able to satisfy the needs for both. The chicken was so yummy, and tastes like the meat was marinated, and placed over grill. There was plenty of seating inside of the restaurant and they had cool graffiti art, which matched the area that is full of wall art. I would definitely be back again and I had a great time with the family.

This place has an amazing Margarita although you get more ice than Margarita. I don't know if this place has changed places but the last two times I've gone there, they burned all of the meat.

My foodie friend recommended this place and so we went on a Saturday evening. I liked that you can order using a computer when you walk in. I selected two steak tacos, chips and guacamole and my favorite: horchata. I opted for the large and it was in a bucket (a Chinese soup take out container). The tacos were good. Flavorful. And the chips and guacamole were decent. I really liked how the chips were warm. I loved the red salsa that they had. The horchata was okay. The container it came in was huge! Service was reasonable and the place reminded me a lot of five guys in that you order and you wait for your food to be ready at the counter for pick up. A few notes: be prepared to pay for street parking. I had to download an app because the meter did not take my credit card. We opted to sit at the booth-like seat and the back was hard wood/not cushioned. This place has fun art.

Delicious tacos and quesadillas!!! They're always fast to deliver and friendly on the phone. They're my fave taco place!!!

Big Wig Tacos and Burritos is located 1/2 mile from Northwestern in downtown Evanston with plenty of street parking. We ordered steak nachos, avocado tacos and a barbacoa taco. The service is casual and friendly. We were greeted as soon as we walked in with smile and "how can I help you ?" Every thing we ordered was fresh and delicious. Steak was perfectly seasoned and so was the barbocoa. Chips are made in-house crisp and light but strong enough to support the ample amounts of steak beans jalapeños tomatoes and cheese. They offer two types of salsa in a squeeze bottle both are medium spicey. The quality and flavor is fantastic! Big Wig offers fountain drinks, Jarritos and horchata for now.The liquor license will be coming soon. Highly recommend! I wish I lived in Evanston!

The food portion sizes were pretty good, the tacos were loaded with meat. The quesadilla was fine and were improved by the salsas available at the counter. I enjoyed the food but there was a slight lack of spice in my opinion. Not necessarily that I was hoping for spicy food, but more spiced food. The inside of the restaurant was clean. The staff was nice and helpful. I came here the first time the second day they opened and I was pretty underwhelmed, so I decided to hold back on reviewing the place until I gave it another chance. It definitely improved, but it's still fast casual quality. It's not bad as long as you're not expecting the best, most authentic Mexican food.

This is their first location in the suburbs. The other two are in the city which I've been to both. The entree portions are small for eleven dollars. Service & staff is excellent though.

The girl who works in front of us in recent months is derogatory towards the clients, she looked at us very badly and treated us badly, we went daily, my work team and I never returned.

I ate here a couple days after the $1 deal that launched a norovirus outbreak (without knowing of course). My party ordered a chicken burrito and chicken bowl--the food was bland but passable. The next day I was feeling horrible and had chills, vomit, nausea, dehydration ... etc. EVERY norovirus symptom. This kept me away from work and ruined my Thanksgiving break. Lately, every time I pass by this place is a ghost town (so much for ambiance). Good! Hopefully, via word of mouth, NU students have warned each other to steer clear. Posting this review for the same reason--keep your distance!

So flavorful! Reminds me of eating at King Taco in East LA. Despite the clean, modern decor, there's something very earthy about the flavors. I had the carne asada tacos although was bummed they where out of Negra Modelo.

Big Wig is MUST TRY! Especially the location in Evanston! With food being so fresh it almost doesn't even feel like fast food. Horchata was amazing as well. Staff is super sweet and very friendly! Portions are the perfect size.

Had a bowl for lunch that caused me gas all evening-- had to pop antacid. This is not normal for me. I guess avoid it if you're on a date that might turn steamy later? The food tasted ok, but no better than Chipotle down the street. If they had alcohol, they'd have an edge. Better Mex is at La Principal.

I've ordered from this location before and no issues. The steak bowl was the only thing I ate today and now I have food poisoning.

Ordered a chicken quesadilla, chips with queso, and a churro. The quesadilla was more of a large stuffed taco. It had decent flavor, but I would not have described it as a quesadilla. The ordering process was fairly straightforward on the kiosk. The highlight was the churro. I would go back for that.

How can you forget dessert?!? Fried to perfection without the oily, greasy taste. The staff here are so kind and helpful with prompt service. They have a cute mural that adds to the layback atmosphere.

The service was good. Clean and friendly place. I had a chicken bowl. The salad had brown ends and the food tasted bland and extremely boring.

This place doesn't get enough credit! They're open til like 1am. Food is fresh. Ordering was fast. The ambiance was nice and clean. And the food is Amazing !!! The prices are reasonable. I got tacos, burrito, and a bowl. 10/10

Of all the restaurants in downtown Evanston this one is the most horrendous when it comes to customer service. Not one staff member is courteous here. Avoid at all costs.. Chipotle is just down the street.

I was passing by on a trip to the beach (I'm from Indianapolis) and I wanted to grab some food for my family. I was thinking chipotle but decided to try Big wig tacos and burritos and I'm so glad I did! The food was made more authentically and had so much more flavor than chipotle ever would. I got a chicken burrito with black beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, cilantro, jalapeños, cheese, sour cream, sliced avocados and salsa verde. This burrito was massive but I enjoyed every bite! The service was great they were nice and I could see they loved where they worked. The decor was giving uptown Hispanic vibes I truly enjoyed my experience here and next time I'm in town I'll definitely be stopping by.

First rate all the way around. Amazing food and service. The jamaica drink I had was also first rate. You don't find this drink in all Mexican restaurants and this one was one of the best I have had. Very authentic food all the way around. Highly suggest if you are in the area to stop in. Thanks Big Wig & Yelp for being so cordial and welcoming. I think they have been in this spot for a few months or so. Hope to try much more of their food.

Expertly grilled flour tortilla and flavorful fillings, great burrito! pleasant staff and the huge windows make it a great place to people watch.

We went here after the football game on Saturday for the $1 burrito deals for Northwestern students. There was a very long line and we waited. We got the steak burrito. A couple of hours later, we were all throwing up for hours. We didn't think it was the burritos until we found out that other students had the same symptoms of food poisoning. Spread the word that this place should not be open at all. I hope they shut down for poisoning so many students right before Thanksgiving. They should have been more careful--guess they were too concerned with increasing popularity over health and safety.

Great new spot in Evanston. 3 Large tacos for 10 bucks, great staff and service, awesome wall graffiti. Hope this place stays in business for a long time.

The food's OK and the staff's nice enough, though our orders weren't given as we asked. Our main objection is mediocre music being blasted at such volume that you can't have a conversation. We asked the staff to turn it down, and they replied that they couldn't - the controls are set and they don't have access. This is something we're seeing far too often. To force unpleasantly loud music on customers can only be motivated by contempt. Business owners, if your crap music is that important to you, get an iPod and headphones. Forcing it on customers isn't a business model - and you won't get our business. We won't be back to this place.

A sloppy mess. I ordered a veggie burrito. It needs rice. Without rice, it's a bunch of raw peppers and onions wrapped in a tortilla with sour cream.

Big Wig gave me Norovirus+potentially E Coli with their $1 burrito promotion on saturday 11/18/2023. Had a hospital visit involved. Several hundred other people were given food poisoning. I don't recommend eating here...

Popped in after a show at Space & man did this hit the spot. I had a steak torta and it was so good. The bread was nice and toasty/crispy. My friend had a burrito & he said that was the best he's had in a long time. All in all, just come by and try a few things. The best is you can order anything just the way you want it.

Portions are really generous. Fish tacos and chicken tacos were both really good. Guac was fresh with chunks of avocado and really good. They just opened a week and a half ago and they are a great addition to the neighborhood. Cameron was great!

Tried it today, two thumbs up from me. I'm going to share this restaurant with my friends and family. The place was clean, the owner and staff is really nice. They greeted me good for my first time and blessed me with one of my favorite bites; a steak burrito with no cream. Thank you all. Thank you to Rosa, who the owner told me to ask for and thank you to the cook and most of all, thank you too the owner because he helped me out and he didn't know that I came to work without any lunch money. Picked up a meal as I got off the train. Very fresh and good chicken torta with a side of grilled corn - delicious and prepared individually like street food that I've had in Mexico. Highly recommend.

Ate here for the first time tonight before going to the movie theatre down the street. Cameron was very helpful with walking us through the menu and offering suggestions. The food was great. We will definitely be back to try more things.

I've been going to this location in Evanston ever since they opened. They used to give you generous portions and the employees were friendly. My visit last night was different. I paid for my purchase online and just popped in to pick it up. I also left them a tip on the Toast app. When I walked in, they had a big cleaning project going on while they were open for business. No one greeted me as I made attempts to grab someone's attention. I saw a few take-out bags sitting near the counter and figured I'd be on my way shortly. A heavy-set man working the grill was speaking to his co-worker and ignored me several times. He actually finished an order while my food was getting cold for several minutes. He gave the other customer his food first although he knew mine was finished way before his. The portions also shrunk. The nachos were half the size of what I ordered just a month ago and the food was soggy and cold after the games he played. I won't EVER go there again!! Don't waste your time or money. There are too many places to get great Mexican food in Evanston and the Chicago Area.

Waited in line for 20+ minutes only to be told they were not taking anymore orders as we were about to order. Very bad customer service.

The minute we visited the counter to order you can feel that they are ready and anxious to tale your order. Foos eas good and fresh. I had the Mahi Mahi. Very fresh and delicious. I didn't even smell any foshy taste. ( by the way Mahi Mahi was pan fried and ifelt safe eating it...the side order was also goo..hibiscus drink...good. so I will definitely come back.

This place is a joke. The steak tastes like it comes from a plastic bag and has no flavor. The portions are small for the price. The manager is too incompetent to make sure to have things in stock. I came four days in a row and tried to order a torta but they had no bread for it. The manager kept telling me the bread would arrive the next day. By the fourth day in a row, still no bread for the tortas! I asked the manager if he was pranking me and why at this point he doesn't just run to the grocery store and just buy some bolillos bread but he didn't even know what bolillos are . Overall, terrible quality tasteless meat, not authentic in any way, and poor management that can't even keep the basics like bread for sandwiches in stock. Maybe next time they won't have tortillas, wouldn't surprise me. When i saw the name "Big Wig Tacos" i expected it to no be good but it was even worse than i had imagined.

First time ordering here. Got some tacos and a burrito and some nachos. The Tacos and Burrito really tasted fishy. I mean like really fishy. problem is I never ordered any fish. They were supposed to be chicken and barbacoa. That aspect of the meal really was a turn off.

Coming from Texas really wasn't expecting much but I was wrong. Great Taco's with excellent salsa.

Just tried the veggie bowl for the first time....not good. The rice was crunchy, beans were very salty and no flavor at all in the bowl. Staff was friendly.....overall disappointed and won't return. Ended up having to toss my dinner because it was so bad.

i am glad i came into evanston after my eye appointment in skokie. i stopped by Big Wig and enjoyed my tostada. i will visit again soon! the food is delicious and will order more food, the next time i visit Big Wig.
