I really enjoy shopping at this Big Y. I usually get groceries on my way home from work and like being able to grab a slice of pizza or two from the pizza bar for dinner. Today I realized that the staff behind the counter put on and dispose of a pair of plastic gloves each time they serve pizza slices. I appreciate the commitment to hygiene. However, for the sake of the environment, would it be possible for them to simply use a spatula or pizza server instead? The quantity of plastic waste we produce takes a serious toll on the health of our planet. In line with that sentiment, I would also love to see some bulk dispensers for products like nuts and coffee beans!!

You can always depend on Big Y for decent prices on fresh organic produce, air chilled chicken, and a wide variety of food selections in addition to other shopping items. The store is always clean, full organized and fully stocked.

I have been going to this Big Y for years. I think it is cleaner than others and I ultimately enjoy going there. I am completely mortified. I went shopping. I bought cans of cat food, a bag of pita chips, a box of protein waffles, two boxes of club soda, and toilet bowl cleaner. As I was ringing everything up a man came over and watched me. Mind you a woman was already working the self check out station. I felt him staring at me and didn’t understand why he came over to stand right next to me as I was ringing out. I thought maybe he just clocked in? I ring EVERYTHING UP but I didn’t put the club soda boxes or the toilet cleaner in the one bag that I PURCHASED because it was heavy enough. After I paid, grabbed my receipt and was saying have a good day he asked me if I rang everything up. I have never in my life ever had this happen to me nor was it warranted by any means. I paused in shock, “of course I rang everything up, do you ask everyone that question?” Another time I was there, another woman watched me as I rang up my cat food and starting telling her employee to watch me as I rang them up, in front of everyone out loud. This is twice now that this has happened to me. I have absolutely no idea why this is happening only at this store. I’ve never stolen anything. Please work on your training methods. The discomfort I felt by him staring at me was enough.

Google
Beautiful place, super clean and organize. Its so easy to find what you are looking for, because the products are well placed. Customer service was okay, respectful and helpful. Parking space is big so you don't have to worry about it, handicap doors are available, etc....

It was my first time going to this store. I was impressed with the layout and the verity

We bought two sandwich platters from Big Y North Haven. One with wraps one with sandwiches. They were so bad we were embarrassed to put them out for our party. Literally one slice of meat and one slice of cheese on each sandwich and wrap. The wraps were so empty they were flat! Luckily my go to did me a favor and hooked us up with two platters same day so our party wasn't ruined. Never again will I go to Big Y for anything!!!!

Yelp
Racist staff. I went in and tried to use a card that I had digitally and one of the staff member approached me in a very rude manner. Assuming that I did not pay for products I paid for based on my physical profile. Loved shopping here but last time I did my groceries here or purchased anything was today.

Yelp
I really enjoy shopping at Big Y but asap please get produce from local farms or within the US. All the fruits shipped from other countries are horrible and old by the time they reach our store. The blueberries from peru are not even sweet, they are bitter. The oranges from south africa are dried out and tasteless.

M L.

Yelp
I liked the cleanliness and space of this big y a lot. The fruit we bought looked fresh but when we got home to open, all moldy. That might just be what happens if we buy exotic fruit on a sunday night, but you know.

Ezina F.

Yelp
Pretty good store. Usually the people are friendly and helpful, though there are a couple of grouches there for sure

Yelp
I love love LOVE Big Y! I have had the chance to go to many of them but this location is the only one I have actually say down and had something to eat. I am not sure if they all have dining areas but this one does and I ate here. I was working in the area and stopped by for lunch. Had a couple slices of pizza. I was amazed by how large the dining area is. I also thought the pizza was mighty tasty. Big Y in general is my favorite place to shop along with Publix in Florida. They are clean and the staff are friendly, they have so many different products to offer and they have actual human beings working behind t he cash register! Yay! This is the market to go to in Connecticut! Oh and try a slice of pizza.

Yelp
Disappointed. This is my go-to store for butcher shop, bakery and floral departments. Last night I stop at the deli at 8:23 pm. The store closes at 9:00 pm. I'm told by the deli worker "We closed now" and I'm given a dirty look. There was noone in line, I was the only customer and all I needed was one item. The deli department was still clearly open and I was turned away and in such an unprofessional way too. If you're reading this and you're the manager, please focus on customer training for the female deli employee who worked at 8:23 pm on January 27th. Thanks! Kudos to the bakery department employees though. Always very kind, professional and knowledgeable.

Yelp
I'd say the prices at this Big Y are on par and consistent with those of the North Branford location. Conveniently on the Post Road, I sometimes will stop here early in the morning before I head into work to return some bottles and grab some change. It's nice because for the most part, the machines are typically in well functioning/working order (unlike the North Branford one!!!) The produce section is inviting and the bakery has a pretty cool layout. On one occasion, I did pick up some muffins to serve company that I was having over the following day and they had interesting and different varieties of flavors, like Double Chocolate and Boston Creme Pie. Helpful and friendly staff.

Yelp
I would like to know why the Hispanic products are found in the aisle named Mexican? Please note that this is very degrading to the Hispanic community. Although our language is Spanish we all from different ethnicities. It would be best if the aisle is either labeled International Foods or Hispanic foods. Ty

Yelp
I've always liked Big Y because them seem cleaner and have friendlier staff than their competitors and love the layout of store. Stopped at the North Haven location for first time on way home from work. Store set up as expected, had quality produce and meat. I stopped at bakery for some items but wasn't sure what to get. The employee was super friendly and helpful, listened to my preferences and made suggestions. Did the rest of my shopping and went to check out. Cashier was also very friendly and professional, bagger asked if I wanted him to bag and then took my bags, I'm picky how things get bagged and was pleasantly surprised that he took the time to bag the way I prefer. This is why I will continue to patronize Big Y. Prices may be slightly higher on a few items but overall quality of shopping experience far outweighs the price.

Yelp
Everything is very nice here, what is needed is a little more improvement in customer service, but in general everything is very good.

Yelp
Big Y in North Haven is my go-to grocery store. The store itself is bright, clean, and pleasant, especially after their recent renovation. The staff are typically friendly and helpful. The aisles are wide enough there's not a traffic jam in every one, and there's rarely any wait for check-out (where they'll still bag for you!). Their seafood and butcher/meat are the best I've found at a chain store except maybe Whole Foods. The bakery is also excellent. Their deli doesn't carry Boar's Head, which might be a sticking point if you eat a lot of cold cuts, but their own brand is pretty good. And there a couple other brands I wish they'd carry, to save me having to stop in other stores. It's true their prices run a little higher than the Stop & Shop down the road, but to me it's worth it for the better experience and quality.

Yelp
This Big Y is in a great location in North Haven and has ample parking. Inside, it's clean and has wide aisles so you aren't bumping into everyone. Produce runs very expensive here, but they do have some specialty items I can't find in other places, like prepared tex-mex jackfruit, etc. They have a great selection of beer and they always have Two Roads. I like that you can freshly grind up your own peanut butter or almond butter. They also have a great random clearance table that always has some unexpected finds (chocolate-covered chickpeas, etc). Their bakery is also fantastic; right now they have packzi, which is a seasonal Polish jelly donut that's filled to the brim. They have apple, prune, raspberry, blueberry and bavarian cream. You can get powdered sugar, glazed or cinnamon (with the apple). Sometimes I come here just for the packzi. Overall a good place to get groceries.

M. D.

Yelp
I almost always find everything I need here almost always the people are friendly. The store layout always confuses me for some reason. Maybe it's because it's not consistent with the other big y stores.

Yelp
This Big Y is truly a world class market. Everything about my experience was pleasant, from the cleanliness to the fast service to the pleasant demeanor of the employees. There was great selection and it just felt like a nice place to shop overall. Well worth the higher prices to avoid stop and shop at all costs.

Yelp
Like many other folks have noted, Stop&Shop is such a miserable experience that we frequented this North Haven Big Y, despite the higher prices. HOWEVER, the management at this store is a mess. Not one single cashier/bagger can manage to bag groceries without chucking milk on top of bread, or, heaven above, keep frozen items together. One time we asked if they could carry an item and they were so rude we ended up just confused. Why is this so infinitely hard, I'm asking for tissues, not a rare fruit from Australia. Now with the COVID-19 changes, this store has been the worst at ensuring compliance with masks and social distancing. Will not ever be going back.

Yelp
Each time I have visited it I was able to find what I was looking for. As I just moved into the area it was my first experience with this store. I will continue to use it as long as I am near by.

Yelp
We attempted to order a cake for our sons birthday which is laser tag themed. We requested the cake to read happy birthday and their names, and have laser lines to replicate the laser tag lights - simple concept especially for what the big y website notes as world class cake decorators - the person working at the north haven location replied that they don't free hand anything in case the customer doesn't like it then they are stuck with the cake - not even a few lines? Far from asking for a Picasso on the cake, and not even when that is our specific request as the website states they cater to...their solution was they could stick streamers to my cake for decoration - I think our soon to be 9 year olds are much more capable to decorate their cake than the minimum wage waste of space with the piping bag at the store - yet another reason not to like this place, ugh

Susan S.

Yelp
I am disappointed with my shopping experience at BigY. It is definitely not the cashiers or baggers. They couldn't be nicer. My problem is with the workers within the store. I never feel comfortable asking a question. I feel as if I am bothering them, even though I say excuse me as they are talking to coworkers. Also, I do not care for the sudden "push" for self check out. BigY has been my go to store for the past 6 months but I will most likely go back to Stop & Shop if I don't see a change.

Yelp
Good products, coffee bar was lacking supply though but staff would not refill. Overall good experience:)

Yelp
Oh, Big Y. What the hell happened to you? This used to be my grocery store of choice. I shunned the likes of Stop & Shop and Shaw's, which were closer, just to shop here. But now, no more. Their produce is no longer of superior quality. I even got a blood orange from S&S the other day which was much tastier than the ones I got at Big Y only a couple days prior. My other criticisms would be that I can't seem to get a 6 pack of Viva paper towels (yes, I'm picky about the kind of paper towels I use), and I have yet to see a loaf of regular ol' american bread come out of their bakery. They also didn't have any whole grain mustard the last time I was there, or about half the other things I needed. Not to mention that they raised their prices on many things in the store. It was pretty disappointing. Their meats, however, are still pretty decent and are a good bargain if you catch them on sale (I got "buy one get one free" on two gigantic bone in pork chops), and I generally don't buy meat in the big "megamarts" (to quote Alton Brown) so that says something. They also make decent pizza here, so if you're hungry, which, inevitably, I always am when I go grocery shopping, you can grab a slice of pizza to ease your hunger and prevent you from buying way more food than necessary. Big Y in North Haven isn't awful, but I will no longer make a special trip to come here. It used to be an excellent supermarket, and, sadly, it's now just average.

Yelp
Good produce, at the ones I have been to. I would say watch out for the "Buy 1 Get 2" sales. Sometimes buying three of the same thing at a Shop Rite can be less expensive that this sale. I hate the coins. I don't think too many people like lugging change around, much less change the size of silver dollars.
google avatar

Lori B.

Yelp
Stopped in thinking I would get a sandwich - they wrap the packets of mayo and mustard right in with the sandwich - completely unsanitary. If that's what I can see, then what's going on behind the scenes? No, thanks. Cashiers during the day are very friendly though. The prices are way over what they are in other towns in the area.

Yelp
Big Y, North Haven, used to have a wonderful Hungarian Mushroom soup. Maybe they still do, but I never see it. The store REFUSES to make it on a schedule, post the daily soups online, etc. They insist that one has to stop in daily to see if just maybe they have made it. What a ridiculous system and what a poorly run store North Haven is.
google avatar

Phew D.

Yelp
Big Y is a total positive shopping experience. Their employees are obviously handpicked for the brightest talent and properly trained. Any BigY store I have shopped in is immaculate unlike its competitors (Stop &Shop). I must say BigY is superior in the quality of its meat, fish, bakery and produce! I commend this American Family owned company for it superior attention to details others deem unimportant. I now shop only in BigY supermarkets.
google avatar

Chris O.

Yelp
Big Y has better prices, friendlier staff, and shorter lines than Stop and Shop. It also has a less corporate vibe. I shop here a lot and I like it.
google avatar

Charlotte P.

Yelp
One huge difference between the Big Y and Stop&Shop in North Haven is the disposition of their employees. At Stop&Shop, employees look miserable. I've noticed the managers at stop and shop aren't as likely to help out cashiers or do tasks like bagging as compared to Big Y. At Big Y, you get an overwhelming sense that employees, no matter what their position will help you in any way they can (with a positive attitude). As for prices, yes Big Y is more expensive, but their products are of better quality and the experience is much better. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the world classics brand of meat, boar's head tastes much better to me so I skip the deli meats and go to Montowese Meat Market for those. The Bakery is great and the Butcher area has an enthusiastic staff. Their produce is 10 times better than Stop and Shop. I'm pleased with this location and willing to spend a few extra dollars for a better product and a better experience.

Yelp
Flag wavers, unite! Feel the nationalism behind Big Y! Realize that you are a part of something bigger than yourself as you select an organic apple or pile four boxes of BOGO Cheez-Its into your overflowing hand basket. The negative reviews of this place are unnecessary. I proudly shop here weekly, American flag draped over shoulders, to Hulk Hogan's theme song. The store is clean and has decent prices, available with your convenient Big Y keychain card. The silver coin gimmick works as well as Viagra in aggrandizing the anticipation and bloodflow as the cashier nears the end of your order. The clarity of their American ownership is that of fine crystal, and while that characteristic is great and all, there is something to be said for subtlety. Their only downfall is the lack of plantains for sale.

Yelp
Hit n miss quality. Always pricey. Sigh. At least it beats 7-11

Yelp
I was over in North Haven and thought, since I hate Stop and Shop with the heat of a thousand suns, I would try Big Y. The store itself is nice and reminds me of a Harris Teeter. Set aside the old people meandering with their carts from side to side, like they drive their cars in CT (where do I write a review for CT drivers?!), and it's a decent enough store with a reasonable selection. However, I get up to the check out and say that I don't have a savings card. What grocery store doesn't give you a freebie on the card thing and just scan one in, then send you to the desk to get one for next time? This lady tells me to check out and then they can rectify the savings at the desk. I go to the desk and get the card, then ask for the savings to be attributed to my $137 worth of purchases. The kid standing there asks ME what items were on sale because he has to return them and re-ring them in order to get my savings. I said, "Why in the world would I keep tabs on what items were on sale? Isn't this a computer in front of you with prices on your food in it?" He said the cashier should have told me that I have to keep track of what was on sale so he can re-ring them. Lesson learned. Thanks for playing Big Y. Big Y goes on and on about being "American Owned". Well, I have no idea who owns the other supermarkets in this area, but I can guarantee that Stop and Shop would have to be owned by Al Qaeda or Michele Bachmann for me to ever return to Big Y.

Yelp
Like this store much more than Meriden store. Staff a lot more helpful here. Once called Meriden store requesting buy couple dozen unfrosted cupcakes & they woukdn't sell them to me or even tell me why! I told them I needed them for a kids' party & the kids wanted to decirate their own. Since it was approximateky 100 degrees outside, didn't want to bake them myself. Called North Haven store and they filled my order the same day! North Haven is a bigger store & has more variety. Neither store my primary grocery but do go there fairly frequently. BOGO offers don't work for me, especially if perishable items, because I live alone. Would rather lower prices.

Yelp
Super clean and organized store. After visiting a few grungy Stop&Shops and ShopRite's, I was disappointed in Connecticut's grocery store options, until I found Big Y. The fact that it's American owned just makes it that much better. The team here is very professional and helpful. The fresh veggies and delicious bakery are so much fun to walk through! My first time in I told the gentleman at the register that I would like to sign up for a rewards card, so he and another gentleman finished bagging my groceries, while I signed up at the customer service desk, and then one of the clerks walked my groceries over to me with my tallied receipt to be addressed at the desk so I didn't have to walk back to get them! How sweet and kind and very thoughtful. I travel all over the US for work, and am very picky about my grocery stores. This one just earned my business for the 3 months I will be here in CT.

Yelp
On a Friday afternoon went to BigY Three register open about fourty people waiting. One register didn't know what he was doing. This store always has this problem. Best to avoid this store Unless u got lots of time

Barbara L.

Yelp
I have been a lifelong resident of North Haven, 38 years....I have been in North Haven Stop & Shop 2 times...It is grossly disgusting, smelly, unkept and has poor quality. The employees look like a mess as well. Big Y, which I frequent sometimes daily is the entire opposite. It shines from floor to ceiling. The employees are neatly dressed and presentable. The quality of meats and produce are above and beyond anything sold in Stop & Shop. I am proud to be a Big Y shopper, even though the prices are a bit higher than S & S, again, this is by the flyer price because I refuse to go in the store. Kudos to the owners of Big Y for setting the standards high and for the managers and workers for following the rules. You should all be proud of the beautiful North Haven Big Y.

Yelp
Not a fan. It's too bad because it's the closet grocery store to me. It never has anything I'm looking for and its very expensive. I'll go the distance to the Branford Stop & Shop.

Dom M.

Yelp
The other day I was shopping and came across the frozen shrimp, a 1 lb bag (Jumbo or Colossal), buy 1 get 1 free. The price was something like $25 (@regular price!!. Now I don't know but I never saw a lb. of shrimp for $25. I just purchased the same at Stop & Shop, on sale with card, for $11.99...or regular price $16.99. If I purchased 2 at S&S it would have been $24. I think Big Y has a scam going on with these buy 1 get 1 free. How wonder how many customers get hooked on this. Another item I was looking for was the coated paper dishes (6") 100 count. Again, it offered buy 1 get 1 free at regular price $4.99!!! Now these paper plates cannot be regular price of $4.99. Big Y should get away from this practice and also eliminate the "coins" system. That's all you see in the store, buy 1 and get 1 free, prices for Gold coins, prices for Silver coins.....why have a Big Y card in the first place? I have to agree with the other posters, except for Scott V.....Sorry Scott, but the flag is not going to put food on my table. I'm as patriotic as you....but the two don't mix. I may just decide to stand in front of a Big Y store and "burn" my card!

Henry A.

Yelp
Near my work so convenient but of poorer quality than other Big Y's in the area. Service is consistently unfriendly and slow, even by managers. Blah atmosphere inside and carries much less local produce than Rocky Hill, North Branford, and other local branches.

Gerald A.

Yelp
If you want to purchase a book of stamps at the service desk, they ALWAYS try to steer you to the checkout lines to buy this even though you plan on using the automatic checkouts. Try it sometime: they come off as very insensitive to buying stamps as if they do not want to take the time. It has happened to me about 10 times so far!!
