The 21 Best Restaurants In Marseille - Marseille - The Infatuation

"Everyone is relaxed and happy at Bikini—even the servers—and who wouldn’t be, sitting on a rooftop overlooking the Mediterranean? This is the upper level of the hotel/restaurant Tuba Club, and is a more casual, lighter meal spot than downstairs. Soft reggae plays in the background just loud enough to be heard over the waves, and white tasseled umbrellas shade directors’ chairs with turquoise frames, at matching tables set up so that every seat has a view of the sea below. The menu is short and the plates are small: two people should order five to six things, like citrusy-salty orange slices hidden under paper-thin mojama, or clams in a seriously garlicky broth. The focaccia is a must for sopping it all up. Reservations are essential on the weekends—just note that Bikini is only open from April through October." - sophie friedman

My friend and I were visiting Marseille for our first time, coming from Stockholm and London. We came in slightly worried about the negative reviews this restaurant had received on Google, but the food looked good and the location was just perfect for our day of walking and swimming in the Calanques. We found it extremely unfair that they would receive such negative feedback because not only is the view incredible, but we felt privileged to be seated and served by wonderful, efficient, kind, and jovial staff. Joris, in particular, was outstanding, along with everyone at the bar, whose name I didn’t catch, unfortunately. From being seated to the service to settling our bill, everything had the right amount of attentiveness without being overwhelming (i.e., when relaxing, we don’t need someone to constantly come to our table to check on us, as we knew we could just get up to order at the bar). The food itself was high quality and on par with the standards we’ve seen for seafood in Marseille (especially for crudo fish), and the price isn’t shockingly high compared to other restaurants of this calibre in the area, especially with this incredible view and environment. We drank plenty of wine and pastis, ate very well, and were sad not to be able to finish the delicious fritto misto, but it was massive! Both the food and drinks menus were simple and exactly what you want to accompany the food. We even ended our lunch with a quick dip in the "pool" in the sea, just below the restaurant. We now believe that many of the reviewers might not be familiar with how casual, relaxed, and no-fuss the service and lifestyle are in the south of France. This isn't the high-traffic, get-in-get-out kind of vibe you’d get in large American chain restaurants, and, anyway, it’s not what you’d want on holiday in a place like this! You DO need to reserve ahead of time, as space is very limited (and entirely worth it).

The view is stunning and the set up screams with so much potential that you enter with a smile. However this smile is being enormously challenged by the very very unfriendly staff. We have been greeted with a „ ok you can sit there“ indicating a table in the back. After 20min sitting there and several times having passed by us we stood up to ask for a menu. Without no further explanation we were indicated again a pile of menus. Another 20min passed by until we figured out with our sitting neighbors that you have to order at the counter. Still trying to not let that ridiculous unnecessary snob behavior ruin the vibe we ordered. Needless to say no recommendations no further explanations and if you were lucky apart from a nod you would get an annoyed yes. Frustration started to affect more people, standing up getting glasses for wine a water bottles that were not brought to the table. I lived in several places and I am familiar with this hipster attitude and thinking that some sort of emotional distance attributed to an attire but this has been hands down within the top 3 of my worst service experiences. Even though the place and the view are absolutely breath taking I would never go back there. No food, no view and no conversation can be enjoyed while constantly being in awe of the lack of service, competence. You pay 21€ for a Greek salad. I get you pay the view as well but you should at least get the bare minimum of service.

4 stars for the atmosphere and the view — the rest leaves much to be desired. I can’t see the difference between an average bar in Marseille and Bikini. The food menu is very basic; it could offer more interesting dishes and work on improving the flavors. Very overpriced for what we had, and the staff needs to put in more effort as well

This restaurant is all about the stunning ocean view — and it delivers. Watching the waves while you dine is a real highlight, and it’s clear the view is what you’re paying for. The food is good, though basic. Simple dishes, well prepared, without any big surprises. Service is friendly, and the overall vibe is relaxed. Perfect for a casual (and a bit pricy) meal with an unforgettable backdrop.

I almost didn’t come here because of the negative reviews, and I am SO glad I didn’t listen. Our experience was fantastic. We made a reservation the day before so we had no issue getting a seat. They let us choose our table and we grabbed a table overlooking the ocean. The staff was lovely and helpful, the food we ordered was absolutely delicious. Literally no complaints here. Of course this is not the cheapest place so if you’re looking for a less tourist-priced place, this isn’t it. But if you set your expectations on price, you won’t be disappointed.

We ordered our food and paid and then were told one dish we ordered was sold out. They claimed they couldn’t refund our card payment and made us order something else (that was less than what we paid for) and then never gave us our food. We waited an hour and a half and after being yelled at by the chef for asking where our food was, we asked again for some kind of refund. The waiter preceded to tell my friend she was being horribly rude to him and ruining the other diner’s experience. He called her names, humiliated her in front of the other diners, and acted like she was crazy for wanting our 23euro back. He even followed us out on the street to keep calling us rude and told us about his “famous father” 💀 A very uncomfortable experience that left my friend crying and feeling unsafe. We never received a refund or apology.

I personally love Tuba Club and visit it every summer since they opened - Bikini’s on the other hand even if its belonging to the same establishment is so different from Tuba in terms of people - Marseille is all about good humour and respect and Bikini’s staff has zero of those values, i understand operating under heat can affect your mood but its the same for Tuba staff so there are no excuses. By the end of your over priced Greek salad you question why you sat down in the first place.

Since I was treated like trash (even if the food was good) I highly recommend not to go; or use Google Translate for French. I kept it classy but the female bartender had the BIGGEST ATTIUDE. I ordered two dishes and I changed one of them into Padron peppers. Even adding another dish of fish later on. Upon getting my food I got the dish I cancelled… I went straightaway to the kitchen as the bartender & waitress were busy to tell them I got the wrong order. The confirmed I needed ordered two other dishes - looked at the receipt - and they told me I can keep it. Tried a little bit but didn’t like the fish taste in creamy substance. When I asked for the cheque the bartender raised her voice to me; “ you did order it” and “you ate it” while I taste a pinch of it. With the permission given to me to keep it. I firmly told her she didn’t listen well and maybe it’s the language barrier. Luckily, the waitress hushed things and gave me a little smile to let it go. That bartender didn’t apologised, not a single moment checked with the kitchen. One day she will run into the wrong person who will treat her with very little respect… I paid 67 euro!!!! by myself to get this horrible attitude. Tuba Club is same owner but it was lovely over there last year…
