Some of the Best Chefs Are Opening a Downtown Austin Mexican Restaurant - Eater Austin

"Biko was a Basque-style restaurant in Mexico City, co-owned by chef Mikel Alonso Garcia and Bruno Oteiza. The restaurant made it to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants and the Latin America lists in 2016, but has since closed." - Nadia Chaudhury

"A nondescript shopping arcade in a tony neighborhood might not be the place you'd expect to find one of the world's top restaurants—but if there's any place that reinforces the adage about not judging a book by its cover, it's Mexico City . Biko has been ranked on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list for years now. The two executive chefs aren't as visible as other local chefs on the list, but that may be because they're constantly in the kitchen, turning out memorable dishes. Guests can order off one of two menus: one is more traditional-inspired Basque cuisine, while the other is contemporary. Expect playful presentation and exceptional service."

This is definitely worth the hype, very up scale and modern interior. The food is incredible, they offer a tasting menu with wines as well as al La carte. There are modern and traditional dishes to choose from and they can do split plates so you can taste a nice variety of food. Definitely recommended.

My meal at Biko started out really well -- really good bread, excellent amuse, solid first course. Unfortunately the tasting menu was pretty uneven. Dishes are extremely artistic -- they're beautiful! Some had taste to match, others not so much. The menu is supposedly basque inspired, which I didn't really get. Overall a good experience, but not very memorable.

As a follower of the world's 50 (and 100) best restaurants, I had incredibly high standards for a restaurant ranked 65th in the world. I'll start with the good- the service was incredible. The waiter thought of everything we might need down to bringing a new spoon within 30 seconds of simply hearing one drop on the floor. The ambiance and small details were well thought out. The most important part- the food- was well below average. To start, the menu is so confusing and we spent a good 15 minutes just staring at it trying to figure out what things were (and trying to figure out how it was organized). We had to ask how it worked in order to figure it out, which in my opinion should be the first thing the waiter needs to explain. All of the food lacked salt. If I'm going to pay $100 for a meal, it better be impeccably thought out and taste even better. Even after asking for salt, it was still lacking in flavor and imagination. The best thing we had was a tamarind margarita and the cheese plate (which doesn't involve any cooking...). They also served bread on the side, but it was cold and definitely not even close to the best bread I've ever eaten. If something isn't perfect, it shouldn't be served, otherwise it will just take away from the rest of the meal. Out of 7 courses, 2 were semi decent. Save your money and go find yourself some tacos al pastor.

I went to Biko to celebrate my 30th birthday and it was truly disappointing. Super expensive unmemorable food, the service was just ok, and I didn't like the atmosphere. Last time we came here was 3.5 years ago when someone invited us as a wedding gift. That dinner was amazing. We had the tasting menu that also included drinks. We felt special, the food was delicious and original, so we were super happy. I wanted to celebrate my 30th birthday here, but unfortunately it was nothing close to our previous experience. I agree with other reviews, the food was ok but nothing extraordinary. We also ordered the tasting menu, but this time we weren't surprised by the flavors. Probably the best dish was the first one: the foie gras. It was delicious and different, in fact it's the first foie gras I like. The mushroom soup was also great. The rest of the food was only ok, and I found the last dish too weird. It was pork with a black sauce. I liked the desserts. I called one 'shrek' because it was green and it looked really funny. But when I tasted it, I really liked it. It had quintonil cream/foam and some parts of the desert tasted like celery. They just really need to improve the presentation of the dishes. I don't remember the two other desserts (they gave me a free one because of my birthday). We ordered two glasses of wine, we started with white and ended with red. The waiter recommended them to us and they were good. They cost around $200 MXN. Biko also has to improve its decoration/ atmosphere because it didn't feel special. Waiters were ok, but not super nice as you would expect in a place like this. So in the end our dinner didn't end up being special, which is a shame because this place is expensive ($1600 +tip per person). I wish I had celebrated somewhere else, no wonder why they lost so many places in San Pellegrino's ranking. This is not only me, all the recent reviews are more or less the same. I probably won't come back.

Good flavors, and presentation. Should really have one or 2 more plates in the tasting menu (it had 6). Service is good but for a restaurant of such aspirations it could be better.

Tried the modern cuisine sampler menu. Some highs and a few lows, but overall felt it was not good value. For that kind of money, I expected to be wowed and it was not the case. I was looking forward to trying Biko in my trip to Mexico City, so I feel a bit disappointed.

Amazing food and extremely accommodating staff. This extremely exclusive restaurant requires advanced reservations and is rather hard to find considering it's low profile enterence but one inside you are in for a very unique and highly refined experience.
