There aren't many dive bars that I am willing to frequent this far north. In fact, Billco's might be the only one. The folks here fancy to have established a great space to hang out with a few friends and have some quality craft brews, maybe play some pool if you're able to get a table. But the problem with their mission and the implementation is this: The service here is seriously disgusting. I mean, the bartenders are some of the rudest that I have encountered anywhere, and despite having a ton of great, local beers on tap, are enough to encourage me to cross the bridge and head down to the Bay for beers and billiards. The bridge toll is a small price to pay for decency. Let's talk details.
I had been told by my girlfriend and others that the bartenders here were terrible, but you just can never be too sure until you experience it for yourself. Well, sadly, they were all correct. The people behind the bar seem more concerned with making friends and chatting it up with the bros wearing backwards hats and polo shirts than actually doing their job, while moving fluidly between indifferent and abrasive. One anecdote involves a lousy dart we were given one evening, which was totally broken and bent. We went to the counter shortly after receiving it and asked for a new one, considering it would not be possible to really play with a dart that didn't fly correctly. The guy behind the bar basically accused us of having bent it (we had only thrown it once just to experience how awful it really would have been), and told us that they didn't have any more to give us. Difficult to believe, since there were still 2 or 3 unused boards, but whatever. I get it, tough guy.
The other bartenders will simply ignore you as long as they can, choosing instead to prioritize their friends or people they went to high school with. They will sigh and stare off down the bar while you order, avoiding eye contact like some odd robot and mechanically pouring your beer. It is cold, and expressionless, and although it is service, it makes you feel like a burden or an inconvenience.
It's too bad, really. There are so many great beers on tap, and so few places like this in the area. The saddest part about it all is that I don't think most of the folks who frequent here really care all that much, so this is unlikely to change any time soon. If you are really itching for pool or darts, or if you flat out just don't care about being rudely treated and perhaps ignored for long periods of time, then this is certainly not a bad spot to check out. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it.
