Bill's was a place I had never heard of before, in a corner of Tulsa that I'd never been through. It was just through digging around online that I happened upon it. I must say now that I'm glad I did.
It's a tiny shop in a very unlikely part of Tulsa (a largely forgotten corner of Admiral overlooking I-244). The parking lot has decayed into near-gravel conditions in parts, and people basically pull their cars in wherever there's a suitable, unobtrusive space. The selection of burgers is really quite interesting; I don't think I've ever been anyplace that listed 1-lb., 1-1/2lb. and 2-lb. burger options. It's mind-boggling to me that anyone would want to eat that much (and I understand that the guy from Man vs. Food has been here).
But my, the burgers are great! The buns are grilled to just the right crispness underneath and full of flavor, while the mix of standard ingredients (mustard, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato) is really well balanced. Of the other old-school burger places in town, I'd say only Hank's on east Admiral gives Bill's a run for their money. Nicer still, the fries are tasty and perfectly cooked. Slightly soggy, mind you, but not to the point where they feel limp or oily. Friendly service as well, and you can watch how they put care into how they prepare the burgers.
From the reputation the place seems to have, I was surprised to not have to wait for a seat. Most people that came in while I was there had called in orders to go, so I mostly had the counter to myself. The wait time between ordering and receiving my food was probably about 10 minutes, which is more than acceptable for me (especially given how many to-go orders they were preparing when I walked in).
All in all, a very good holdover from an earlier era of Tulsa. I'll definitely go back.
