My wife convinced me to try this place out while coming back from an appointment. She told me that this was one of her childhood memories that she would come here all the time with her family. This takes me to my next location review.
Bill's Pizza & Pub in Mundelein.
When you first drive up to the location, it looks almost as if you're walking to someone's log cabin. When you entered the interior, you are transported back to the early 80s interiors all wood with taxidermy animals hanging everywhere in large fireplace and solid booths throughout with very few tables and chairs.
I want to make a point for all of my readers. The majority of the restaurant is sit down booths. The booths are quite small, and the tables cannot be moved. They are welded to the floor. I mentioned this because many people were walking in. They were sized people and thought the booths were too small.
The only option for tables are 6 to 7 tables. They do not care where you sit in when you walk in the person behind the bar said sit anywhere.
They did not have the fireplace going. It would have been a beautiful touch because we were sitting right next to it and it pours the weather now he changed to cold weather.
There are peanut shells all over the floor. In fact when you sit down, you are given a small basket of peanuts in their shell and encouraged to throw shells on the floor.
Menus were dropped off, and when we first walked in, we were one of only two other tables in the entire restaurant.
The bartender was also the server for the tables. Everything was pretty slow paced It did not seem like he was struggling with the small amount of tables that he had.
We looked over the menu. The menu looked very old and thoroughly worn. Covered in a dirty plastic sheath.
They have at the top of their menu that they are famous for their double-decker pizza to thin crust. Pizzas put together and baked with cheese on top.
Looking at the prices, they're astronomical a small 12 inch double-decker pizza was $36. My wife does not like much on her pizza so she got a personal size 9 inch mushroom and spinach. Or pizza was $20.
I could definitely see some price gouging on the menu. We both ordered a sprite and a coke. Did I know that I should have savored these drinks because this was the only refill I was going to get for my entire time there.
Luckily, before the rush, we were able to put in our order I went with Bill special, which was just a typical Chicago style sausage, pepper onion mushroom I tried it as their double-decker style which they are known for or should I say famous for as they claim. My wife went with the Personal pizza with mushroom and spinach.
More people started to come in. They were now about six tables. One table had 6 to 7 guests and this was too much for our server now to handle.
We wait for our pizzas to come that took about 20+ minutes
My pizza looks to be nothing more than a pan pizza. When I took a bite into a slice, I could see that there was two separate pizzas in the piece. It was a cool, but nothing worth pain and extra $20 for the normal thin crust personal size pizza.
My wife's pizza looked like a frozen tombstone pizza. She enjoyed it and said it was good and it also brought her back nostalgia.
At no time after we received our pizzas that anyone come back to our tables. They were two other young girls also just wandering the restaurants not doing very much.
The one girl went to the table behind us and said are you guys OK? Do you need anything? She walked past our table not asking us if we need anything.
I understand that servers can get overwhelmed but you obviously have three people in the Bar area. This is bad scheduling and bad management to not designate help when needed. The customer should not suffer because either the server does not want to try and make more tips or management not actual workers to help out
I thought the pizza was average I did not like that the green peppers that they put on top of the pizza were not cooked with the pizza in the oven they were put on afterwards.
I would definitely say this place is not worth a second visit. Our bill came to almost $80 before tip. Absolutely ridiculous.
The service was not good at all. The food was average at best. This is not somewhere that you need to rush out to go to anytime soon. It is a staple in the area because it has been there for decades. That is the only thing it has going for it tries to do some cliché things to be such as the peanuts that you threw on the floor and a double-decker pizza, but it's not worth the price.
