Bill's Place

1st time at Bill’s Hamburger. A very good local hangout. Burgers were good. Ordered Mexican cheese burger and #1 Bill hamburger and hot black coffee Mexican cheeseburger was very good. Meat cooked as I liked it. A little spicy #1 Bill was also good. Surprisingly, the black coffee was very good.

Stopped into Bills after a day at the beach. It’s got an old school feel, definitely reminded me of the diners back at home. I ordered a patty melt and fries which came out to around 15 dollars. Delicious! Every bite resembled flashbacks of home. Watching them cook it on the flat top made it even more special. They’ve been around for over 60 plus years for a reason!

What a delicious and classic American diner! Located walking distance from Baker's Beach, this is a delicious place with lots of burger options and really good fresh cut fries. Next time we'll have to try the milkshakes! The employees were all very attentive and nice.

Love that Bill’s is still around 🤗 they have always cooked their bacon just the way I like it, extra crispy. They always remember their customers & are so personable. Some of the best burgers in the city & hotcakes that don’t disappoint. They use good quality eggs with golden yolks. So happy I was able to enjoy the quietness of being one of the first in this morning, looking forward to another visit in the morning when I can enjoy the space alone as the staff ritually do each day. An old school institution in the heart of the Richmond that makes good ol’fashioned food for relatively inexpensive prices. The burger was solid especially for the price and the onion rings were actually my favorite part. $22 after tax and tip for a cheeseburger, onion rings and a coke is pretty well priced in non fast food standards (honestly cheaper than Shake Shack) and solid food and service.

We came upon this place on a recent trip in SF, and are so glad we did! The service was amazing, the food was great, and the restaurant itself was very comfortable. Easy access to Golden Gate Bridge on public transit as well! Highly recommend a stop here.

I was happy to find Bill's Place as it has been for decades - awesome diner. The onion rings, always my favorite, were crispy and light. The burger cooked to perfection. The food off the grill not greasy. And the milkshakes are huge and as awesome as ever. Best service ever - super friendly and attentive. I had the burger, o-rings and a chocolate chip milkshake. My pop had the patty melt, fries and a vanilla milkshake. We were both happy and well fed. Generous portions. Can't wait to go back!

My parents have been coming here since they were kids and have brought me over the years as well. It's good to see Bill's has retained the same quality and gives you that classic American diner experience without the kitsch. We especially love their milkshakes. Been coming here for years and I still believe this joint is one of the best burger places hands down. The old traditional vibes have been the since I've been coming here in the 90's. I like the works hamburger but since it's on a French roll I like to call it a hamburgsandwich. Really tasty and they get fresh meat everyday from their trusted butcher. Also curly fries and a milkshake won't break the bank if you are already sitting down for a nice meal. The service is good. The dude who owns the place is very good acknowledging customers and making you feel welcome. Two thumbs up. Keep up the good work fellas!!!

Actual old timey burger place so if you like the things the way it use to be, this is a place for you. They have a "Celebrity Burger" which is like 4 burgers in one. A YouTuber (#LATryguy) was filming his visit & he had the Celebrity Burger. The fries are soso but the burger was pretty good.

It has been a few years since I came here. The place is clean and has that nostalgic feel. There is plenty of room between tables so you don't feel cramped. Service was quick and food was out with 10 minutes of ordering. The only service item missing was they did not check in with us after the food was dropped off. I got an iced tea $2.85, but was not asked if I needed a refill. The cheese burger was really good though. The patty was juicy and cooked perfectly. The bacon was crispy. Onion rings were pretty good, real rings, crispy and crunchy.

I am just a sucker for hole in the wall, hidden gems! And this place is just that. Service and vibes are fantastic. Homey, friendly, and authentic. They use fresh oil in their frier so all of their fried food comes out extra crispy and flavorful. Definitely makes this place stand out. The quality of their meat is also great. Food was pretty pricey considering the standard portions, but it all tasted good. Restaurant has a cute diner feel, and I love that it's a neighborhood staple. The workers were super sweet too!

Good 'ol diner type food in the Richmond. If that's what you're in the mood for, Bill's Place is one of our goto spots. They've been around forever and a neighborhood staple. Particularly fond of their club sandwiches.

Bill's Place is a no frills hole in the wall burger joint that I reminds me of places I used to frequent in New York City. The menu is straightforward, uncomplicated, yet rooted in the classic American Burger and they do a damn good job. Service is attentive and easy. I was able to get everything our table needed with no issue. I ordered a patty melt on rye, with a side of fries. You can tell they cut and fry everything themselves, because I found the fries to have a solid potato flavor that was not drowning in salt or oil. The patty melt with grilled onions was perfection, because the burger was enveloped in American cheese. I have a guilty spot for American cheese with grilled onion, so I had a merry lunch and washed it all down with a Diet Coke. One of my friends ordered a burger with a milk shake, and the milk shake was legit, and old school cool. I will go back to Bill's place when in the north side of the city, and I highly recommend that you do too.

We just had a wonderful lunch at Bill's Place. The best part was the enthusiastic service we enjoyed from our table crew. We were keen to watch how Daniel, and Reda (we asked them their names, to be sure) ...how great they are with customers. From the genuine "welcome in" energy from each of them to every customer, to their watchful eye over every table, complete with offers to make sure every customer has what they need. I noticed how, when a homeless man came in, and got the same welcome from Daniel who offered him a menu. The man ordered and then gave up several crumpled bills from deep in his pocket. He received , from Daniel, every bit of respect and service and gratitude as any other paying customer. These two young men portrayed the class that would make their boss, their community and their parents proud. We live out of SF nowadays, so we haven't been to Bill's Place in years, but what we experienced in food was consistent with our memories of this classic, fun, comprehensive burger joint. The Burgers were done perfectly to order the Tuna Melt was classic, the Fries came piping hot, and the shakes (shareable) were indulgent! Banana...Yum! Another thing we noticed was that Bill's Place filled up quickly, especially considering when a group of 22 people clamored into the out-back deck. As we watched, the grill man, along with help from (Manager-on-Duty) Reda, and a woman who also jumped in, never lost any cool. With lots of orders coming in the grill-meister never skipped a beat, never got a bit flustered. We were not expecting our food to be set out in such a timely manner. Bravo!

This has been a highly anticipated review as I frequent the Bills Place Yelp page often. I ate here two years ago and it was horrible. Like never wanted to eat here again bad. But Ive been walking by recently and decided to give it another go because I love a shake (ur booty) in a metal tin. I was pleasantly surprised with my night at Bills Place. Bilf, if I may call him that, came through this time. Isable and I ordered the Giants Burger, which is a cheeseburger with bacon and avocado and cookies and cream milkshakes. I got onion rings and she got curly fries. Morgie got Bills big burger #2 with regular fries. The burgers were delicious and perfectly medium. Onion rings were also really good. The fries were hot and crispy. They needed a little salt but to each their own when it comes to salted fries. And the shake! To die for. Literally, I felt sick because I couldn't stop drinking it. Isable personally prefers a more crunchy cookies and cream shake but I thought it was perfect. Also the waiter was so sweet and attentive. Shoutout to him, he was working so hard. They had Halloween decorations and chandeliers. A nice touch to a retro diner. I now love Bills Place. I can't believe I ever thought badly of him. 5 stars baby and I'll be back for another shake (ur booty).

The perfect American Diner for just about anything but their burgers are AMAZING! The staff is incredibly nice & do their best to make your experience as perfect as possible. They have tables, a counter & an outside area! Definitely a cool, chill place to grab a bite!

Great fries and burgers it's a real old school place. Stick to the basic bacon cheeseburger and fries.

Another stop at our favorite burger place on the avenues. Well made and tasty burgers, super crispy fries and imaginative shakes. The owner is super nice and accommodating. Matt says if you are around the avenues, check this place out.

Just finished lunch here, and I felt like I had to leave a review because 3.5 stars (as of writing) is kinda underselling this place. It's a perfectly mellow little diner and I'd happily come back. The staff was friendly and attentive. I sat at the counter and had a great few of the super clean flat top, stove, and hood, and saw how seriously everybody seemed to take keeping the place tidy and looked-after. The single cheeseburger was legit - straight down the middle diner burger, but cooked properly with fresh toppings. Curly fries were fresh and hot. Is it going to completely change your idea of what a diner sandwich can be? Probably not. But is it tasty and does it scratch that particular diner itch? 100%.

I wish I knew about this place sooner. I saw a TikTok video about it and my sister and I checked it out the next day! We even called and asked if they had outdoor seating so I could bring my dog. They are so sweet, they have an outdoor patio in the back and they allowed us to walk through with my dog and sit outside. The food was amazing as well and the milk shake. Such a great mom and pop restaurant. Authentic and welcoming. I got the Paul burger, and my sister for the BLTA. we are for sure going back again. Very family welcoming.

I happened to be in the area when nostalgia hit me when I was a kid coming here for there burgers where they grind the beef on site and the original owner Bill would stop and greet the customers and regulars. One of the best memories was on Halloween when the staff would dress up in different costumes and entertain the families who brought their kids before or after trick or treating. Fast forward and Bill and the staff are long gone but the tradition continues with the burgers and fries that I remembered as a kid! Pictured is the Don Cheeseburger with grilled mushroom and fries along with some Hot Tea on this cold rainy day. Despite a group of families with kids, service was great with the Bill's team of just four working well together.

Not an 'event' type of place. What I mean by that is you probably won't write home to your family back east about this incredible burger place. If you don't want to shop, cook, and clean for a meal and just want to eat out and support local small business without spending $50 to feed two people... this is a place for you. Listed I order order or quality. Service was attentive, prompt, accurate and polite. Ambiance was just what I wanted. Casual. Roomy. Not rushed. Not loud. Prices are very nice. Food was average, but that's what I was expecting. Menu variety not much beyond the regular burger joint. I didn't have any but I saw vodka on the menu. Sweet! Ice cream sundaes too.

I haven't been here for years and I came by for old time's sake. I support local, mom-n-pop joints and this is one of them. I wasn't too hungry and I got something simple, a grilled cheese sandwich. It was okay. When I got rung up, they billed me $ 9.50 for the sandwich and another $ 3.50 for the soda. I said I was under the impression that the grilled cheese was $ 6.50 and the server said that's for kids. I don't know, I think $ 9.50 with some fries for a grilled cheese sandwich is a bit of a gouging move. You look at the picture that I am including and see if you think that plate is worth $ 9.50. I mean come on... I'm so disappointed and feel gypped. I'm not coming back for years.

Was on my way to play around at the Presidio, golf course and stopped in to just check it out. These burgers remind me of the ones I had in the central valley in the 80s. Delicious juicy simple and just wonderful. The staff was so nice and it was just a great family vibe.

I grew up eating this burger because i lived down the street it was the best ever then- It is-still a good burger but something has changed not like it used to be. Before I would have given it it a 10 out of 5 star review

Amazing ... random find after leaving the the Academy of Sciences. The service was fast friendly and efficient. So many choices of burgers.Best Burger I've ever had .. They grind there own beef. All of the toppings were extremely fresh . Don't skimp on the Strawberry milkshake....worth every penny. The price was extremely reasonable compared to many other places that charge a lot more...and last but not least the fries were fresh and fresh cut .. I'm kinda old now so you can imagine in my lifetime how well I know my burgers. This is an amazing place and will definitely be back .

Is this the best burger in town? Probably not. Is it the most honest burger in town? Top 5 for sure. If you're looking for Brie and sun dried tomatoes on a spinach brioche bun this isn't your spot. If your want a fresh hot grilled in front of you burger with a shake made from real ice cream this is your spot.

Came here after a short run needing some fuel, got the cheeseburger #1 + fries, small chili cheese fries, and chocolate malt. Regular fries were fine (benefited from more salt + ketchup), kinda like In n Out fries. Chili cheese fries were good! The chili hit the spot. Chocolate malt was great, classic diner vibes and good ice cream. Burger was solid, nothing special but all around good and went well with everything else. A cute diner with nice people and fast service. Would recommend!

This neighborhood restaurant has been here for over 50 years and still makes a great burger and fries!! Yeah, it needs a fresh coat of paint and don't look at the glass chandeliers above the tables, lol! But, you can't go wrong ordering any of the burgers and the fries actually TASTE like potatoes! Delicious! The Potato Salad was great too but everyone has their own opinion about what ingredients to put into potato salad. We all loved it! Our server was friendly and attentive as well as the owner. Great nostalgia returning to my old neighborhood and eating at my teenage favorite hangout in the Richmond District. I wasn't disappointed!!

Came across this place because another burger joint on Geary just seemed too much a hassle parking wise to get to. We have been here twice ever since discovering it on a drive-by. No regrets. The burger was made perfectly to order and the Reuben was delicious. We took our son here a few days later. My hubby got the Reuben, son got the Bill's No. 2 and I got the chili dog. And we got a chocolate malt. It was very low-key and service was spot on. Parking is metered but that's fine. We will be back. There were some autographs on the wall posters and hey, there was a write-up that said Benjamin Bratt has eaten there. The place is open for breakfast, too, but haven't had that yet.

Really good food and a nice outdoor patio in the back. They have an extensive menu where they named burgers after famous local people, some of whom already passed on.

Great old-fashioned diner burgers ground in-house (although I recommend ordering "medium" if you usually like medium-rare -- their doneness scale skews very red, don't trust the waiters' description! You've been warned.). The onion rings are my all-time favorites, and I know my way around onion rings. People rave about the shakes, but I don't find them anything to write home about. Nice casual environment, clean, a bit nostalgic like an old-time soda shop. Staff extremely friendly.

We took a trip down memory lane today and stopped at Bill's Place for lunch. Still amazing after 40 years! Great burgers, any possible way you want them. Fantastic shakes. Friendly service. It was a great pleasure. Nice to know that some things don't change!!

This review is specifically for their club sandwich. It pains me to give Bill's two stars for anything. We love the burgers here. The service is friendly and our kids love coming into the restaurant. My wife and kids visited Bill's today and had a great lunch. She offered to bring me some food. I'm a bit burgered out so opted for a turkey club. Now I don't expect a burger spot to make the most amazing turkey club in the world. But what I saw when I opened the box was basically a BLT with turkey flavored bread. There were at most 1-2 slices of turkey in total on the sandwich. Again, not expecting the meaty inch-thick pile of turkey that normally comes on a turkey club at a diner or sandwich shop, but this was a sad excuse for a turkey club and feels a lot like a rip off. There's no email address easily available online for the business, so I called them to provide feedback rather than resorting to Yelp. In fairness, they offered to remake the sandwich if I brought it back. I declined, as I don't want to make the 40 minute round trip and waste the food, and told the guy that they just need to put more meat on their club sandwiches with what they're charging for them. Dude told me to post about it online and hung up. I ate the sandwich anyway. It was good. Needed more turkey.

It's been awhile since I've had Bill's! This place has been around since I was kid so I'm a bit nostalgic. It's an old school diner that serves up some juicy burgers. We ordered the works which is a deli style burger with your standard lettuce and tomato plus bacon and avocado. I was expecting a rounded patty burger but instead it served like a long sandwich sub. It was good and flavorful but a little challenging to eat without all the food contents falling out in each bite. We also ordered cole slaw as a side but our order game with fries instead. Ordered via Grubhub so maybe an error on their end ? The fries themselves were fairly basic. They were mushy and unsalted but ok with some ketchup. Parking in area can be challenging. Lots of other restaurants nearby and it's in a residential area. We did pickup and did a quick double parked so we didn't have to deal with parking.

Five stars for old school diner with kids menu decent prices and decent food. My kids really like to come here.

A very well established Resturant. I enjoy sitting at the counter. Best burger and fries in the Bay Area. Their shakes are to die for. Staff is friendly and very efficient

We were looking for a place close to the Golden Gate to drive across and have a little Lunch. Bill's is in a clean neighborhood, Nice inside, clean restroom. Problem was the food. Ordered two burgers, one with everything and one without out pickles or onions with pickles on the side. Drove across the bridge and parked at the view point looking back at a grand view of The City (San Francisco). Unwrapped the burgers and dressed them with condiments. The tomatoes were minuscule, but all in all they looked pretty good. I took a bite and said, "pretty good". Wife as well liked hers until the second and third bites. She asked me if mine was cooked alright. I said it was OK, but a little under cooked. She said hers was very under cooked. She had another bite off the edge and said, "I can't eat this anymore, it's almost raw". I was able to finish mine, but we both joked about which one of us might get sick. Neither of us did...so far. Our dog finished hers. We were probably just an aberration and probably wouldn't ever go back anyway. It's more like a local hamburger joint. I would suggest that anybody going to an unfamiliar hamburger joint request the cook cut their hamburger in half before they take a bite...just to be sure.

I got the Barbecue bacon burger a while back, and I have to say it was the best burger ever. The service was amazing It was my birthday and they gave me free ice cream.

We had gone out for the day and were further north than we would usually be. We were hungry so my husband pulled up yelp while I was driving and was going through some local food spots. Bills place was one of them. Sounds good, under a mile away. Off we go. From the old it looks like a well established little dinner set up. Inside has a lovely well lived in sort of look. The lady who took our order was lovey. Come to find out they have been around since 1959! Wow! One signature king burger that was huge and oh so good and one of the burgers with pineapple. The burgers and fries are absolutely fricken delicious! Do yourself a favor and order the Banana shake! Its the best we have ever had. Well done guys. We will be back!

This place is the best in SF! Love everything about it tastes very fresh and the people working there are awesome. Very friendly and helpful staff. The gentleman taking my order went above and beyond. Order any burger and get the onion rings!

So been here many of times with my family but this latest time might be my last. Quality not the same, prices much higher and service was only ok even when there were only two tables. Ordered the " the works" and burger was dry, mushrooms very old, small portion of avocado, French roll was falling apart. My wife order the fish and chips which was a bad choice ( bad frozen not fresh tasting). Had to say I did enjoy the fries though. Sorry to say but probably won't be back. Must be another burger spot in the neighborhood

That is one tasty burger! And get the peanut butter malt. Tough to find good malts sometimes, but this was outstanding. I like a nice hole in the wall burger place. Foodbag approved.

The Works is the best! Great service and recommendation by Hannah: Avocado, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, lettuce on a fresh french roll with hand-cut fries. The patio out back is peaceful and beautiful. Icy cold beer on tap. Family-owned business (Rayna and her son Reda are super nice!) for seven years. Support our locals!

I've been coming here for years. Recently they accommodated a group of 14 and the servers and staff were very helpful and friendly. The food is standard fare but they really make a great burger, I had the Giants burger. The vibe is relaxed, nothing too fancy here but a great place to have a comfort meal and spend time with friends. Bonus for them serving beer and wine. Definitely recommend this spot!

First time trying this burger joint. My bf has been here before many years ago, but since then, ownership has changed probably a few times. He said it was known to have fresh, ground hamburger meat. I'm not sure if it's the same as before. Burgers were done medium rare as it is stated on the menu. It wasn't too thick of a patty though. It would have been nice if the buns were toasted and crunchy. Bacon was cold and looked pre-made. I would give this place about a 3.5 star rating for their food. They give enough to satisfy you, but it isn't over the top that I'd write home about it. My bf and I had a mint chocolate shake as well. For 2 burgers and a shake, nearly $50 for lunch. Hefty price tag, if you'd ask me.

It's kind of an old school greasy spoon hamburger joint that has been around for a long time. I had the Mexican Burger which was tasty enough but the potato salad was tasteless - no seasoning. Prices are reasonable - service is okay but they are understaffed so you might wait awhile. French fries look crazy. Nothing special about it - but reasonably priced for SF - less than $20 for lunch.

My fiancé has been coming to this joint since he was a kid and he finally took me. Vivian was a sweetie! Very attentive to our needs... like the wobbly table when we sat down and was always making sure we were ok through out our meal. The burger I had was VERY delicious and the apple pie a la mode... look for yourself... it was a mini pie for us. My fiancé shared his milkshake and it was VERY yummy. Take a trip to Clement and DEFINITELY stop in for a delicious meal at Bills!!!! We will be back!!! Thanks again Vivian for making it a great first time for me and as usual,.. a fabulous time for my man.
