My mom and I went to breakfast this morning at Billy's. It was a first for both of us. She ordered tea with an omelette and I ordered coffee and the avocado quinoa bowl. Both dishes came out quickly, however my avocados where visibly brown. I mentioned to the waitress they were bad. She said she noticed it also, but she was told they are fresh and they look that way because the avocados have been frozen to maintain freshness. Ok....two things. First, I am not a chef, but I KNOW you are not suppose to freeze avocados. Second, food is not considered 'fresh' once it has been frozen. It's an oxymoron to even have "fresh" and "frozen" in the same sentence. Even with skepticism, I tried it...and it was just as disgusting as it looked. I asked my mom to try it also and she spit it out into a napkin. I attempted to eat around it but I was over the whole dish at this point. I tried to put salt, ketchup, and hot sauce on the rest of the dish to no avail. The manger asked if everything was okay and I told him the avocado was bad. He began to explain the same thing as the waitress but I told him I tasted it and there was no doubt it was rotten. He asked if I wanted guacamole instead which was also fresh (doubtful). I said no so he asked if they could make something else and I declined the offer. I know enough people who have worked in the food industry to know you don't send food back or ask them to remake a dish. He said he'd take something off the bill, but when we got the bill they took the drinks off and the dish was still on it. It was obvious I ate next to nothing. The waitress actually had to ask to have the dish taken off and he did take it off.
Billy's is a cute and very clean establishment in a great location. Our waitress was sweet. If I did return, I would try something else on the menu. I would implore Billy's to question whoever thought it was ok good idea to freeze avocados, and even more important, whoever thought it was okay for that dish to come out looking and tasting like that.
