A Small But Mighty Coffee Roastery Runs Out of a Cole Valley Garage | Eater SF

"Operating out of a Cole Valley garage that the Streetmans opened in June 2020, Dan and Ella sell just-roasted specialty coffee bags directly to neighbors from a rolled-up garage door, creating what feels like the most grown-up lemonade stand: a Behmor 1600 roaster tumbles beans and fills the corner with thick aromatics, a grinder sits against the wall, homemade Paint House cards sometimes sit on the table, and mailers are taped to the Streetmans’ Subaru for shipping. Dan’s roughly 17 years in coffee informs the business — he sources beans through long-standing relationships (including Iris, Lourdes, and Ana Isabel, whose beans make the “Honduras Hermanas Alvarado” blend), and Bird and Bear currently offers eight varieties, blends, and single-origin coffees priced at $15 per pound as a statement of accessibility compared with many roasters charging $24. Because of local rules he only sells packaged bags (not prepared drinks), carries a California food manufacturing license, and acknowledges the operation sits in a regulatory “gray area” that may not be permanent; he plans to expand into grocers and cafes, host fundraisers like events for the SF-Marin Food Bank, and use the business to give back to the community. The pop-up walk-up hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Thursdays 1–4 p.m., and the corner of Beulah and Cole Street remains infused with the dark aroma of coffee as neighbors stop by to buy beans and chat." - Paolo Bicchieri

Amazing local, family-owned and operated roastary, I love walking to pickup my beans for the week. Very cute and named after the family's twin girls! The Night Owl Dark roast is the go to 10/10 recommend if you are a fan of dark roasts.

Delicious beans! All the staff has been helpful explaining what each bean will taste like and which are good for espresso. I don't know much about coffee except for what I like it to taste like so them helping pick out my beans is so helpful~

I posted pictures of the before and after, Dan was a pleasure to shop coffee from and was able to help my brother with an odd request for what beans he thought would be best to infuse bitters with. Furthermore, after getting back home to Texas I reached back out for some help dialing in Ro-Sham-Bo and they were quick to assist. Delicious coffee at an excellent price, especially in the speciality coffee market.

Found this place through an article on SF chronicle. Upon arrival there was not much wait. No Apple Pay. Credit card is available Cash is the best for small business. Mask is required and there’s a bottle of sanitizer gel available. Minimum purchase is 1lb / ~453g for US$16 Noah recommend Java Mt Argopuro, he said it was his favorite in which I trusted him and got. He mentioned notes of Dark Chocolate and caramel. For some reason it smelled like hints of soy sauce. Yeasty and like burnt caramel. Overall it’s good.

Only placing this review for there Peek-A-Boo Espresso beans. One of the worst beans I’ve had, and I don’t enjoy drinking coffee anymore because of these beans. Just a bitter and non robust flavor to them.

Had these beans delivered last night, couldn't wait to get up this morning for a shot. Pulled a really short espresso and thought I'd screwed up but... 😱 had a taste of it and it was the most perfectly sweet chewy shot. Loved it! Honestly had a similar experience with the Peek-a-boo blend last time I got it but..i have the memory of a gold fish and forgot to review it! 🐠 I liked the aesthetics of the old packaging better - the hustling SMB vibe! But the new packaging is clearly better for the product.

I freaking LOVE Bird and Bear coffee. I first tried it at Flywheel, and dreamt of it for weeks until I returned. I was finally able to go back, and I bought a big of Bird and Bear’s espresso beans on the spot. Then last weekend while I was on a run, I spotted a table full of these bags! I couldn’t help but to stop by. I really just can’t express how special, chocolatey, rich, and melt-in-your-mouth these beans are! You’ve just gotta try ‘em. (Note — the bag is of a different roast, but I’m confident it’ll knock your socks off too)
