Bird Rock Coffee Roasters Alights in Carlsbad - Eater San Diego

"A new North County branch of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has landed in Carlsbad. It’s the sixth retail location for the Bird Rock-based roastery, and the largest cafe yet for the company, spanning 1,600-square-feet with an additional 1,000-square-foot patio and fire pit. The interiors are by local firm MY Studio ID, which also designed Bird Rock’s most recent openings in Pacific Beach and Torrey Pines. This outpost features specialty seasonal coffees sourced at origin, and is fueled by a Slayer SteamX espresso machine and the Pour Steady pour-over system. A new offering is “The Bird,” a rotating seasonal single-origin espresso that will also be available to bring home for a pour-over, espresso, or brewed coffee. Also new is a full breakfast and lunch menu created by Bird Rock’s chefs, Justin Gaspar and Sean Le, who both trained at the International Culinary Center in Northern California. It’s expanded to include breakfast burritos, croissants and biscuits, as well as a lunch menu with salads and more. The Carlsbad location will serve as a kitchen hub, from which all pastries and food items will be distributed. Now open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, the cafe’s operating hours will eventually extend to 9 p.m." - Candice Woo

This morning, I enjoyed a coffee date with my wife at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, located in Carlsbad. While sipping a bold cup of coffee, there were several customers appreciating the store. Moreover, this coffee shop was well decorated, which creates an alluring ambience. The fresh water dispenser came in the form of coil copper tubing, which looked interesting. Bird Rack appeared popular. Several people were enjoying it. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. After all, Carlsbad has wonderful weather. What I found disappointing was the store policy of no free refills. To refill my cup costs $1, odd. I look forward to another bold cup of coffee at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters.

Google
Cute coffee shop in Carlsbad. I ordered the Left Coast Latte with Salted Caramel and Oatmilk. So yummy. My friend ordered the Sandpiper and loved it. We both agreed the flavors weren’t overpowering. Definitely give this place a try.

Google
Best Americano I have had in ages! Great coffee, drinks, and food. Wonderful atmosphere, friendly staff, and in the heart of Bressi Ranch. Great spot to grab a drink or a bite and run or sit, relax and chat with friends.

Google
Very glad to find a coffee shop that uses Organic Whole Milk. The baristas offer excellent service on the coffee orders. The food has been made delicious. It is great to see such a strong workforce. Excellent customer service. I enjoy the mocha, cortado, and the garlic on the breakfast croissant sandwich 🙌

Google
Ordered an iced coffee and got hot. Ordered an avocado bagel and got bacon and egg. Pretty sure the guy was new but it was a miss. The good news is they were both still really good.

Google
Coffee is already a popular cafe for us. Coffee beans are good and I want to talk about syrup this time. I bought this syrup with sandpier's name, made coffee at home, put oat milk in it and drank it iced..This is really delicious. I think this place is good for making syrup as well as coffee beans.. It really does upgrade the coffee.

Bird Rock (original SD business) was easily one of the best coffee shops in San Diego. The location in Bird Rock served some of the richest and smoothest dark roast premium coffees you could find. Sadly, in 2017 the business was sold to a Kansas based corporation called PT's Coffee Roasting Co. Since then, they have opened eight new locations and completely **abandoned everything that made Bird Rock Coffee good**. I used to drive 30 minutes to get a Bird Rock coffee because it was rich, buttery, and flavorful. Now Bird Rock coffee looks like sickly urine. It is a dark yellow, transparent cup of sour bean tea. You will not find a more acidic and sour cup of “coffee” in California. The menu might say they have a “dark roast”; they do not. Do not be fooled. I have ordered this coffee and **poured it out** after one sip. I have a giftcard for $50 which, **I will not use**. I am baffled as to why anyone that appreciates coffee would go here. This is corporate slop masquerading as the reanimated corpse of a once proud San Diego brand. They took the branding and image of Bird Rock, chewed it up, regurgitated it, doubled the price, and handed it back to you. Sadly, many people can't tell the difference. Please do not be fooled. You can get an **infinitely** better cup of coffee and Phil’s. If that's not close, Lofty and Better Buzz are also superior options.

Google
Great place to stop by for a good coffee. First time here but will definitely come back if I have a chance. I tried the spicy latte and it was amazing, maybe a little too sweet for my taste but not bad at all. They have an extensive menu that includes breakfast/brunch. Service is great and environment suitable for studying/relaxing. Parking with easy access. Prices a little bit on the high end, but comparable to any Starbucks you go to. Highly recommend.

Yelp
My friend took me here on an afternoon The people who work here are super Duper kind, and I find the spot to be cleaner than most cafes. I got a cappuccino and it was made very well with great flavor and you can tell that they clean their espresso machine I also enjoyed all their syrups Will be coming back

Yelp
The coffee and service are excellent. The avocado toast, which is loaded with avocado, tomatoes, and arugula, is beautiful and is a full meal. They have a vety nice food menu and the breakfast burritos sound great, although I've never tried them. I c am still a fan of Peet's but Bird Rock is very good.

Yelp
Love the Bird Rocks in Little Italy and Torrey Pines, and this location is also great. Very roomy and lots of tables inside if you need to sit down and knock out some emails. The pour overs are the best, but on this hot day.. the Nitro Cold Crew was the way to go. Smooth and refreshing. Cooled me down and gave me a caffeine boost simultaneously. The service was very friendly and patient. The drinks were prepared quick, and tasty. Will be back for sure!

Yelp
Great spot to grab a morning coffee and catch up with friends! They're open earlier than everything else in this plaza so it becomes our go to coffee spot! There is seating indoor and outdoor, so take your pick!
google avatar

Edward B.

Yelp
Went out here with the coworkers. Enjoyed a dirty chai latte and the classic burrito. Both were pretty good, I'll come back here a few times for lunch. It's located in a good spot easily located near a few shops in the area.
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
I really like Bird Rock coffee. Got the Left Coast latte and hubs got the Nitro Cold Brew. We tried the Del Sol, and I wasn't a huge fan it was super bitter (for me anyway). I such a great location bc we like to come to Bressi area for lunch and Trader Joe's so it's a nice treat to get coffee from here.
google avatar

Jamie A.

Yelp
Great summer drink options, their iced dirty horchata is my go to. My friend said her hazelnut latte was amazing. Their baked items are ok, but you really gotta try their burritos are darn good too if you need a light meal. I give BR props for their customer service as their baristas are always on top of it. The drinks take a while to come out here so have some patience. The last time, the cashier, Porter, kindly brought our items outside for us. That was nice! Their bathroom line always has a wait. Sometimes it is really messy in there too so I suggest Trader Joe's or Sprouts if you need a restroom. It is Bressi Ranch so yeah it's expensive coffee, and prices seem to be going up!
google avatar

Yelp
Bressi Ranch BRCafe - had hot Carmel Latte recommended by a friend. Tasty good. Nice location, but very busy on a Sunday late morning.
google avatar

Abeeha H.

Yelp
This coffee spot is great in all aspects. Interior design reflects the goals and mission of bird rock the company, the location is ideal, and there is always seating available with wifi and outlets (perfect for studying). i always get an iced sandpiper latte w oatmilk or almond milk here and am never disappointed in the quality of my drink. the folks are really cool here and the service always works out well. If you are in the area and need a spot to study and have a cup of coffee this is your spot!!
google avatar

Marissa M.

Yelp
My friends raved about this place for the quality of the beans so I thought to give it a try while in town. I ordered the white chocolate truffle latte and I would say it was good but not great. The flavor of the white chocolate truffle wasn't particularly prominent to me. While the drink had a bit of sweetness, I really couldn't taste the syrup much. The drink also wasn't very creamy and felt slightly watery. I really love creamy espresso based drinks but this place is much simpler. The espresso however was good, I was just hoping to taste the syrup flavor a bit more. The workers were nice and the location great for studying. It was quite quiet so we ended up leaving to take our coffee elsewhere since we felt we couldn't really catch up in the shop as it was too quiet and packed with people working.

Yelp
I travel plenty and seek out local coffee places. This is a popular spot for locals. I am not sure why it has such a low average review. The 3.5 stars is not reflective of the quality coffee or food. During morning rush hour, the were 3 baristas hustling to make drinks as fast as possible. They were smiling and working their behinds off. The coffee - amazing! They do not mask the quality by over sweetening the drinks. Made perfectly and tasted great. The croissant sandwich was delicious as well.
google avatar

Mandy J.

Yelp
The coffee her is ok. I feel this is a more popular spot if you live in the area. I do come here quite often. Usually the service is good, and the poeple are awlays nice. I had ordered a cappuccino here earlier today, and noticed it wasn't made right. There was way too much milk, almost like no coffee - an excessive latte? wasn't sure. I threw it out, was pretty upset about it.
google avatar

Daniel K.

Yelp
One of the best places in San Diego for espresso drinks. The aroma of bean and color of crema are delightful. Cappuccino is my favorite, latte is good as if you prefer it less dry. People are friendly, they are focused on making good coffee , but focused on selling coffee. If you make a good consumable, the crowd will be driven there. No need to sell in force. Good place to connect for work, hangout with buddies.

Adam K.

Yelp
Good coffee but they are slow, and they served two women first that ordered their drinks after me so I think they're sexist too because they're absolutely no reason for you to be making me wait like that unless you guys are just really disorganized. Edit: 20 minutes later and now the milk in this coffee tastes spoiled. I noticed they leave the gallons out
google avatar

Nancy F.

Yelp
My husband and I used to come here all the time. But we noticed over the past year that prices have crept up while the quality of the drinks has gone down. Even a simple steamer isn't good. On top of that, it takes forever to get your drink, when it's busy, it can take 25 minutes ...for a drink!! When it's not busy, you're still waiting at least 10 to 15 minutes. The baristas are not friendly and don't seem to have a sense of urgency at all..,that combined with the drinks not being that good, we stopped coming here and now go to Starbucks every week. SO much better! The drinks taste better and service is so much quicker. On a consistent basis at Bird Rock, it would take us almost 30 minutes to get our drinks, and it wasn't even crowded. I could no longer recommend this place, but if you're willing to wait 3 times as long as other coffee shops, with unfriendly staff and you have no other choice, it will do.
google avatar

Yelp
If you haven't gone yet...run and get the most fun and adorable holiday cup out there!! Even better it contains the oh so yummy return of the Stroop Waffle latte!!! Ya know this girl loves her add shot but, you still get the sweet gooey goodness and the cinnamon of the latte. Aiden, and Sierra were rocking the bar and Giana was on milk! Talk about the "A" team. It was a busy rainy Saturday and it was hopping. Even for how busy it was it still had the nice chill vibe I always appreciate. Tried the Greek yogurt, house-made granola, fresh berries and honey. Wow!! Perfect balance of sweet and tart, so filling and that granola I could eat by the truckload!! I will be coming back for another delicious, perfect latte in a holiday cup!! It's so unique and fun! I love the artwork and certainly will not spark any holiday cup wars!!

Yelp
Yumm my hot almond milk macadamia latte was so delicious and i also enjoyed my gluten free blueberry loaf. Came in the morning on Wed around 9am and got a hot mac almond latte less sweet and a gluten free blueberry loaf, along with a beautiful glittery raspberry danish! The staff was very friendly and helpful as always they r renovating the menu they have so there currently is no menu. They have all the classic flavorings like vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, they also have macadamia nut flavoring which is more unique and i've only seen in hawaii. They can also make matcha lattes and chai lattes. They have an assortment of baked goods, happy they had a gluten free option today. My latte was perfect amt of sweetness and the coffee tastes so smooth and creamy!!

Yelp
Loved the ambiance and drinks at this location! The service and staff were friendly and contributed well to the overall good vibes.

Yelp
Two stars because the coffee is good and the food is decent. However the service is terrible. We brought our daughter to enjoy a drink. We got an Americano, a latte, a mango smoothie and two sandwiches. First we got the latte..... About 10 minutes later we got the food.... About 15 minutes later my husband got his Americano. About 20 minutes later we went to ask for my daughter's smoothie. They had to go back to check the receipt all that while all the people that came after us got their drinks and food before us. Terrible management. Not coming back to this location.
google avatar

Leilani M.

Yelp
I need coffee and Bird Rock was near by so I stopped. The shop itself was very cute and hip. Love the vibes. I ordered the dirty chai and the honey b latte. Both drinks were extremely watered down. I like my lattes to have a creaminess to it. Despite getting oatmilk in my dirty chai and whole milk in my honey b latte both drinks tasted like a latte with melted ice. My dirty chai had a very strong star anise aroma (felt like I was drinking pho broth) and the honey b latte was so bland.

Yelp
Dude... Bird Rock... ROCK'D I think I got the Chocolate Mocha on the rocks and geez... Lemme tell ya. Bueno!! I did order a 12oz but the nice lady charged me for a 16oz and I was like damn, lemme just go with the flow and not make a scene ya'know. Fuggit that 16oz Chocolate Mocha on the rocks shmackedddd that color wheel thing I swear I thought my licensed therapist was the only one allowed to use that shit to figure out my mood, I was usually more on the amaranth but no need to dig in the past when you can look forward to the future hahaha. Yeah anyways yalls was firme fr. Might be back!

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for years. Service, food and coffee had always been great. However, recently this has changed. They mess up my orders and customer service is non existent. On my trip today, I ordered coffee and little dippers. Coffee came out fast. Little dippers never showed up. After 25 minutes, based on the receipt, I went to go ask. The girl looked at me and said "okay" when I explained the situation. Finally, they looked for them and then gave me ones that had clearly been sitting behind the counter for 20 minutes. No sorry or anything. We're probably not going to go back. I'm really sad about this too, but revolution has must better service even if they take a long time.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by Bird Rock Coffee Roasters for the first time recently. A great place to stop to get your morning caffeine in. I got The Honey B and The Boss Breakfast Burrito. Both the coffee and the burrito were great. I really enjoyed the environment of the place, especially the coiled copper piping for the water! Such a unique piece. The service was great, staff was wonderful! Would definitely stop by again!
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee: 4.5 mics Service: 4.7 mics Ambiance: 4.9 mics Coffee: The only coffee roaster I have visited in San Diego when in the area. The coffee great. Single origin and blends available. Pour-over (automated) available. Espresso and espresso drinks available. Great tasting drinks Service: Friendly and knowledgeable baristas available. Service was pretty quick. Ambience: Modern little coffee shop that is tucked away. I love it. Bright and lively. Clean bathrooms. If you're in the area...stop in get a coffee and support small businesses. Off the grid, fresh roasted coffee

Yelp
Very good ! Especially for this hot weather , don't have a favorite one just yet because from the drinks I've tried they're all delicious ! Most def recommend

Taylor B.

Yelp
I was in dire need of a coffee fix when I stumbled upon this hidden gem! The staff were so kind and helpful, very quick with their work too. The whole place was full but still not too noisy. I hope I can find an excuse to come back again!
google avatar

Hadley H.

Yelp
I got the pumpkin spice latte - hot and it was delicious, a perfect amount of spice, and so creamy! My husband got the dark chocolate mocha and it was good but not great, middle of the road in terms of mochas. The location has indoor and outdoor seating and Saturday mornings get quite crowded with couples and families. Overall it was a great vibe and great coffee so I'd come again.
google avatar

Christopher S.

Yelp
Got an iced coffee and an iced latte with a little snack. Iced coffee was good. Iced latte was just okay, and the croissant didn't really have much filling at all. Store was clean and had friendly staff.
google avatar

Lila S.

Yelp
I have been coming to this birdrock at least 3-4 times a week, for YEARS. Recently they started making my coffee either extra milky, or extra sweet, and sometimes both with so much ice that it's just trash. So I started getting no ice, light milk and then getting ice in a separate cup with A SPLASH of milk. I'm talking about 2-3 oz of milk. These people today tell me I have to pay for the milk for 2oz of milk, because they started making my coffee like crap 2 months ago. The service here has gone down the drain. My $8 latte, my teenagers decaf + croissants for the kids costing $$$ and you want to charge $ for a splash of milk? Wow. Lost a customer who spending $400 a month easily here. BYE!
google avatar

Jenita P.

Yelp
I stumbled across bird Rock as I was desperate for a cup of coffee. I tried their hazelnut iced coffee and had mixed feelings about it! It was house made which was a huge reason I got this flavor. The coffee itself tasted like hazelnut, yet it also tasted watered down. Now I don't know if that was from the ice or the coffee itself but I will say I nearly got what I asked for. The barista did a great job! The store itself is spacious and has outdoor seating, they have merch and other cool nick nacks in the shop. It's not the most quiet in here but it is spacious if you need to study or come chill It's located in a center so there's plenty parking although sometimes you'll have to walk a little bit. Customer service was good, the gal in the front did recommend me a couple drinks which I went with! Cleanliness- great Price- this place is WAY more expensive than other coffee shops and this is coming from a person that drives out of the way to get coffee
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
I'm a regular at Starbucks when I travel, but I thought I'd give it a change since Bird Rick was closest to my hotel. I walked in and the employee was standing behind the register never saying a word and never uttering a smile. I ordered a coffee and a croissant, which were both pretty good. She rang me up. I tapped my credit card. She handed me the receipt without a single word being said I don't ask for much when I go out for coffee in the morning but a simple hello, good morning, a thank you, or even just a smile will go along way. 3 stars for the croissant and coffee. I think I'm going back to Starbucks next time.
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
The coffee here is so-so, but the hot breakfast was tasty. My husband got the larger size of latte but it just tasted like milk without much coffee taste. We think that instead of adding an extra shot of espresso, the barista must have just added extra milk. We also got an almond croissant and kouign amann; both were just okay but we've had much better elsewhere. However we ordered the breakfast burrito and croissant sandwich and both were pretty good. In short, I don't know if I'd return here for the coffee or pastries but for a quick hot breakfast, it wasn't bad.

Dave C.

Yelp
Bird Rock is usually spot on and I'd normally give them at least 4 stars. This review is for today only. Went to grab coffee and a Boss burrito. Coffee was great, but burrito was semi-frozen and cold throughout. I mentioned it and they kindly offered to refund my purchase, which I declined as I'd already eaten most of the cold burrito . No question I'll be back, but I'll check the temp of my food.

Viktor S.

Yelp
Yes good place. I like the clean tables none sticky due to lack of cleaning . Love the flat white from this place so far the best I've had. Keep it up
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
4.5 stars rounded up for another awesome branch of Bird Rock! I came by twice during our recent trip and we thoroughly enjoyed everything. Both single origin pour overs and drip were derricious and their Left Coast (hazelnut) and Sandpiper (salted caramel) lattes were finely made. For food, the classic and boss breakfast burritos were two of the best we've had yet. The latter's intrinsic flavors from its inclusion grilled veggies and sauces made it pop on the palate, no salsa necessary at all. Finally, service was friendly and efficient x2. Further experience to reinforce Bird Rock as my favorite coffee destination in SD.

Oben C.

Yelp
It was my first time, the coffee was great. Owners are friendly and welcoming. Thank you
google avatar

Lea O.

Yelp
Best cup of coffee around. Bird rock roasters is my go to coffee shop. Much tastier than a Starbucks coffee.
google avatar

Audrey B.

Yelp
Let me just start by saying, if you read any negative reviews about this place, stop right there This is the only review you need to read. Serving and slaying is what's going down at Bird Rock. This fine establishment has top tier coffee, crafted with love Their coffee will have you barking for more. Literally foaming at the mouth and salivating just thinking about it Their breakfast burrito goes crazy first burrito i've had in awhile that didn't make me shart myself. Their patio seating is divine. I can bask in the sun while I sip my latte What's better than that???? Overall, I always have a 10/10 experience while i'm here. OH AND ONE LAST THING, make sure to try their single origin espresso it's always dialed in just right and delicious. I LOVE YOU BIRD ROCK ‍
google avatar

Peggy B.

Yelp
Late review. Our initial visit was on their opening day, and unfortunately, the coffee was burnt, leaving us unimpressed. We assumed it might be due to their newness and the need for time to adjust to the machines. Several months later, we decided to give it another shot. However, the young barista seemed more interested in chatting than serving us. I waited for 10 minutes without any acknowledgment, despite no other customers being present. Regrettably, we haven't returned since then. It was a disappointing experience overall.
google avatar

Madison F.

Yelp
This is my go to place for studying! The vibe is great and the coffee is awesome. Nice place too hunker down at for a couple of hours and get some work done.
google avatar

Gaby M.

Yelp
Super good coffee! a little pricey but really delicious! they brought us our drinks outside! we will be back
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
Bird Rock is a high quality coffee shop with choices that you can't find at your average coffee shop. I had a Honey B latte, that had just the right amount of cinnamon and sweetness. The coffee was very high quality too, and I found myself wanting another after I finished mine. The burrito was pretty good, but was a little cold on the inside in some places. It did take us a while to get our drinks and even longer to get our food, so I would not recommend coming here if you're in a rush. However it was a Sunday morning and it was fairly busy, I imagine that the weekdays are a little quicker.
google avatar

Belle Z.

Yelp
Surprisingly weak coffee. I got an iced spiced pumpkin latte, and even though it had about five ice cubes in it, it was very watery. The flavor was very pumpkin forward, so it tasted very much like squash rather than warm fall spices. I had no desire to finish it and if that was the only item i'd received, this would be a one star review. I got the traditional breakfast burrito, which had quality ingredients (great tortilla, big potatoes, crispy bacon) but was under seasoned. I def had to take it home and dress it up with sriracha. It did hit the spot though. Way better than Starbucks in hot food regard. Prices were mostly okay, but their prepackaged, frosted sugar cookie was almost $7. More expensive than Crumbl and half the size. The staff works well, but no one seemed happy to be there. All interactions were perfunctory and there were no allusions otherwise. I wouldn't rush back, but may give it another shot based on food.
google avatar

Trecia L.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered two large dark chocolate mochas (one with decaf and almond milk). Both were delicious. I had the decaf and almond which was a tasty texture with the light foam. We both had the Classic Burrito. The sauces offered were a nice tough to top off. There were 4 sauces: pesto cilantro, red pepper, chimicurri, and chipotle. All were good but my favs were the re pepper (slight peppery sweetness with a bit of a bite) and the chimicurri sauce. Tip: download the app to get points and perks for future orders.

D L.

Yelp
Had an excellent whole milk latte and vanilla oat latte. They make most of their own syrups in house using organic ingredients whenever possible, and the vanilla syrup was delicious. Will be back!
google avatar

CJ L.

Yelp
We have been here a couple of times. I have to say that the staff are friendly, the coffee are tasty and the food is okay. I had the avocado toast but wished they would add pieces of bacon on top. I did ask for over easy egg and it came out okay. My egg was half over easy and the other half was cooked. The price is average. I know some people say it's too expensive but so is everything else. The coffee was awesome. I got dirty chai with oat milk. The food was okay. I also wish that they would give me my food instead of yelling outside to get my food when it literally would take less than a minute to give it to me. It rained today and they didn't even bother to ask if I could get extra towel to clean their table for them instead I got one napkin.

Christine A.

Yelp
Extremely slow. Mistakes that they don't take responsibility for. Asked for a bowl and got a burrito. Asked for red pepper sauce was given chipotle salsa. Asked for a fried egg I've had many times in the past and was told only scrambled. Get it together Bird Rock!
google avatar

Malinee ..

Yelp
Matcha latte with oat milk and croissant sandwich. Friendly service and tasty food. We beat the long line on Sunday morning.

Yelp
Covid update. Bird Rock is now open for online or walk up orders! This makes me so happy!!! I've ordered at least 6 bags of beans from them over the last two months and did my lucky dance hoping they'd open soon. To celebrate the opening, I ordered the iced dirty horchata which was cold, well spiced and the right amount of sweet while the hubby ordered his usual iced vanilla almond milk latte. The entrance is blocked by tables with plexiglass, tape shows where to stand and the employees are safely handling the drinks and cups. Please remember to tip well if you're able to. These folks deserve our love and tips for serving us and helping to make our day a little brighter.
