Stylish Cafe Showcasing International Coffee and Shokupan Toast to Land in Bird Rock - Eater San Diego

"An oasis for coffee and toast is coming to Bird Rock. Called Rikka Fika (coined after the Japanese word for the first day of summer and the Swedish term for a coffee break), the cafe is currently scheduled to open this winter on La Jolla Boulevard where it’ll join standout spots like Wayfarer Bread & Pastry, Bird Rock Coffee, and the incoming Paradisaea in further establishing the beach community as bonafide dining destination." - Candice Woo

We got a hot and cold coffee and we noticed some clumps in our cold drink and told the "Barista" about it, then she said "Its a reaction of hot and cold liquids, it tends to happen" 20min later, we were impressed by the thermal reaction in our hot drink... and the amount of clumps too. Not an expert in this topic, but we never have this kinds of thermal reactions in coffees...

This is one of my favorite coffee shops in my hood! I love the homemade syrups especially the vanilla bean (Madagascar beans!) and the dark chocolate mocha. The lattes are decadent and so creamy. I take mine with almond milk. The Honey B is wonderful too and has a greatly balanced cinnamon taste. I always enjoy it when I get to catch up with a friend here!

Google
To begin with the atmosphere wasn’t pleasant and welcoming, the barista was rude and disrespectful. I ordered a matcha and it was flavor less, it’s like I ordered a cup of Oatmilk. For an $8 drink i expected a bit more flavor. Don’t recommend at all.

Google
The sandpiper latte was amazing. The hazelnut flavor was subtle but the roasted flavor it added was great. Great vibe and coffee.

Excellent neighborhood coffee shop. Got a Brownie, Red Velvet cookie, Blueberry Muffin, and an Almond Pastry. The muffin had lots of blueberries. Everything was freshly made and very tasty. Nothing was over the top too sweet like at other coffee shops.

I’ve heard great things about this coffee cafe, so I finally had to stop by to the Morena blvd, location. Very clean, roomy, vibrant location with seating inside and outside. Minimal parking in a lot but there is a little street parking as well. Their menu has definitely caters to all flavor profiles. They offer teas, coffee, lattes, pastries and healthy food options. We tried the Mexican mocha and vanilla bean latte both 20 oz iced with an extra shot of espresso. The vanilla bean syrup is made in house. I need all my caffeine. Both were delicious and extremely refreshing. Good quality medium roast coffee beans. Perfectly roasted not to strong or bitter. Will return in the future, I want to try their honey bun as well as purchase some Madagascar vanilla and hazelnut syrup for our house. Reasonable prices. They are cashless

Saturday morning I drove 20 minutes from Tierrasanta because the coffee here is so good. But there was no raw sugar (which I found out me after I had waited 15 minutes. I don't know what the sugar alternatives taste like or how much I would like in my drink). No apology or anything. I ended up driving 20 minutes back to the Starbucks one block from my house to get the raw sugar packets. But, okay - that happens. Then today I came back to the same location for another breve latte and 2 days later there is still no sugar. Why, though?

Google
Really disappointed in the service. The person who helped me was really standoffish when I put in my order. It wasn't very busy, so I was surprised that after over 20 minutes I hadn't received my drink. I was seated right by the counter, and was listining for my name and made eye contact occasionally in case they had forgotten. I finally went up to ask at the counter, but the person who took my order (who was not helping any other customers or working on another order) would not help me. Eventually another staff member made themselves available and it turned out my drink had been ready for some time and they just never called my name. I would have at least appreciated a small apology, even if it wasn't sincere. Update: Ordered a decaf and what I received was definitely caffeinated, so in the end I couldn't even drink it.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee shop! I was in the area to have my car looked at and set up shop to get some work done while I waited. I had the most delicious almond croissant with my latte. They don't have a full kitchen here but the pastries are legit. Friendly staff and busy while not being overcrowded. There's a good amount of seating available but I could only find one power outlet. I spent more time here than expected, and also had an iced tea that was also good. Will definitely return if next time that I'm in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Busy place with outdoor and indoor seating. Decaf coffee and tea were no problem at this coffee house. There are a variety of choices for seating options; low and high tables, low counter style tables even. A nice place I'll go back to since it's near mission bay off the 5 freeway near my house.

Yelp
I'm always down to try a local coffee spot and Bird Rock did not disappoint. They do have a few parking spaces as well as decent street parking, which is a nice bonus in San Diego! The coffees are good - we had the Honey B latte and the Sandpiper iced, but for 2 coffees the total was over $15 pre-tip. While the coffee was phenomenal and we weren't disappointed with either choice, the price seems a little steep. The inside had a few tables as well as seating outside, but it didn't give me vibes of a coffee shop I would be able to spend an afternoon sitting and working. The employees were all nice and I felt fairly efficient at getting the coffees out quickly. Overall, not a bad experience and will likely be back, and although the coffee is a little more expensive than other places the ingredients are definitely fresh.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid coffee shop! I got an iced oat milk salted caramel latte and it hit the spot. There was a lot of seating, but was a little chilly in the afternoon. The construction across the street was loud and made it a little difficult to chat with friends but I'd assuming that the construction noises are temporary.

Yelp
Really good coffee. Baristas are informative. The location is huge so perfect to study, talk, or read.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
This location doesn't have functioning WiFi and they refuse to admit it or remedy the situation. There's also no cell service so I can't use phone data. Just something to consider. I also got a chia pudding and it was $7 (screams in broke)

Yelp
We usually go to the La Jolla location but we love the chill vibe of this Bird Rock. We love the taste of the Vanilla Bean Latte and the Sandpiper Latte with the extra shot. Our barista EJ did such a great job of the latte art and was super friendly! Can't wait to come back! Thanks guys!

Yelp
Bird Rock is one of my favorite coffee shops in SD! I love that they have so many locations spaced out pretty well around San Diego, mostly near the ocean or heading towards there. This location is super convenient for when I'm near the Mission Valley area. I usually get the Honey B Latte with Oat Milk, and my boyfriend got the Sandpiper. We both thought our drinks were really good! I love the Honey B Latte, it's the perfect amount of sweetness for me. I would say their drinks are definitely on the sweeter side. The Morena location always has parking for me. If there isn't a spot open you will most likely be able to find a spot on the street it's on. It's located in an interesting area, but parking is a perk that comes from that. Definitely less busy than the location at Bird Rock.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid San Diego Coffee Roaster with great drinks, pastries and beans. This location is located off Morena Blvd. They have parking along the side so it's convenient to get in and out. My husband loves to brew local fresh roasts at home so I've picked up a bag or two from here for him and he's enjoyed them!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Located around the corner from the 5 at Sea World Drive or some 8 blocks away from the 8 at Morena Blvd. This coffee shop has people coming and going. If it's a busy day and parking is all taken up, there is still street parking within a block radius usually. Just keep in mind that one "parking space" is actually a walkway for their side door (hinted by the raised sidewalk). While there are a number of places to sit, there have been a few times where it seemed like everybody had the same idea at the same time and it does get a bit noisy sometimes. Staff have always been pleasant, but speed of service may vary (online orders?) The drinks have been good. Usually get the Sandpiper or Honey B latte. Stroopwafle was good. Wasn't a fan of the spiced pumpkin.

Yelp
Came on a busy Saturday morning and the line was out the door around the corner. Lots of indoor and also outdoor seating. They have some parking just up against the building if you're lucky. We parked on the street and ordered a hot sandpiper and espresso. Prefer the ambiance at their other locations better but solid coffee options here.
google avatar

Yelp
Really liked the overall atmosphere and vibe of Bird Rock. Ranked pretty high on many third wave coffee forums, this was also my favorite coffee shop that we went to in San Diego. They have a little book for customers to list their gratitudes. It was a super cute concept and I also appreciated being to read the comments of those who came before us, and as a result, feeling even more thankful. The Oat Milk Latte and the pour over were both pretty solid. The espresso was paired very well with the milk, and I felt like the blend that they used was a very well chosen option for milk-based drinks (balanced in flavor, and carried through well even with milk). The pour over was pretty bright and fruity - very simple and juicy and a pleasant way to enjoy a washed bean. The coffee was also pretty sweet with a pretty balanced mouthfeel, and was the perfect afternoon pick-me-up.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday morning and it was incredibly busy with a line out the door. The workers seemed a bit frazzled and it took a while to get our drinks and they forgot to heat up our pastry like we requested. Coffee was pretty decent and they have a lot of options to choose from. There was limited seating and a bustling atmosphere.
google avatar

Grace N.

Yelp
Excellent service, very friendly staff. The place is clean and inviting with a very relaxed vibe. I love their dark chocolate mocha latte and honey b latte. They are robust in flavors without being overly sweet.

Azadeh S.

Yelp
Great tasting mocha. Latte art looked good. It's not a 5 as the bathroom wasn't clean. Employees were nice but I have seen more hospitable ones.

Yelp
Bird Rock has the best coffee beans in San Diego. Their diverse flavor profiles with the various beans they get is nice to see. I really like that they have so many locations, and that I can get a free coffee (pour over or cold brew) when I purchase a bag of beans. The staff are always very friendly and quick, and the different locations (including this one) is always clean and bright.

Yelp
I recently visited Bird Rock Coffee Roasters located on Morena Blvd, close to the University of San Diego and Sea World. This Bird Rock Coffee location offers a dog-friendly atmosphere, a good selection of vegan pastries, excellent coffee, and ample seating both indoors & outdoors. One of the standout features of this coffee shop is its dog-friendly environment. As a dog lover, I appreciated being able to bring my pet along while enjoying morning coffee and a walk. It's definitely a great spot to hang out with your pup and socialize with other dog owners. As a vegan, I'm always on the lookout for places that cater to my dietary preferences. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters did not disappoint in this aspect. Their vegan pastry options were impressive and delicious. From mouthwatering muffins to donuts, they had a variety of vegan treats that satisfied my cravings. It's refreshing to find a coffee shop that understands the importance of catering to diverse dietary needs. Now let's talk about the coffee itself. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters takes pride in their coffee, and it shows. The quality of their brew is exceptional. The beans are expertly roasted, resulting in a rich and flavorful cup of coffee. Whether you prefer a smooth latte, a strong espresso, or a refreshing cold brew, you can expect a consistently excellent coffee experience here. Lastly, the staff is very welcoming and friendly.

Yelp
Came here around 10am on a Friday and the line was out the door, I was quite surprised, it probably took about 10+ minutes to get to the front. The staff were nice. I got their iced vanilla bean latte, it was alright, nothing special. Their hot latte was a lot better. Pain au chocolat wasn't bad, tbh probably better than some of the items I tried from Paris En Rose in Del Mar. A few homeless around the area, a little awkward dining outside. A little pricey for a cup of coffee. No stickers.

Megan S.

Yelp
Love the coffee here and the staff are all wonderful!! The honey b latte is a great choice.

Yelp
Bird Rock Coffee has one of the best menus of any chain coffee shop imo, and the drinks are all really good. Imagine Starbucks-level variety of options, but higher quality. This particular location is less crowded and has better seating and parking than others I've been to, making it a good spot to get work done or catch up with a friend (if you can get there before the 4pm closing time). I also like that you can order drinks for here and have them served to you in a giant mug. However, there are a couple downsides that prevent me from giving Bird Rock Morena five stars. First, they don't accept cash. I realize this is a common trend at coffee and boba shops, but it consistently annoys me (and I don't really understand how it's legal for businesses to be "cashless," but that's a tangent for another time). The bigger problem with this location is that the WiFi does not work at all. The first time I came here to cowork with a friend, neither of us could get on the WiFi, so we had to use my phone hotspot the whole time. Then I forgot about that and came back about a month later, only to deal with the nonfunctional WiFi all over again. After that, I don't think I'll be coming back here to work. But I like the coffee enough that I'm sure I'll be back for a grab-and-go drink, or some offline coffee shop time.

Yelp
Coming was here was one of the bigger highlights of our visit to San Diego. There was a small line for ordering, but they prepped those drinks quick. I ordered the vanilla bean latte with oat milk, and the other drink had salted caramel in it. Both were amazing!
google avatar

Stacie M.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop in a nice central location with parking. Came in on the morning of Christmas eve to meet with some friends. We all ordered our tasty lattes and treats. Got the stroopwafel latte, since it seemed like their specialty, and it was tasty, sweet but not too sweet. Plenty of seating, although I think it could have been "cozier" (perhaps a personal preference). They gave our pup a pup cup which is always appreciated.

Yelp
Amazing, cozy, unique and authentic place for true coffee connoisseurs who love not only smell and taste of favorite fruit but modern style and big city vibes of the location. Enormous size of windows, a lot of light and high ceiling make this spot as much recommendable as it could be. P.s. and yes, coffee is fantastic!
google avatar

Chrissy K.

Yelp
I think I went during a time they were changing things around in the shop. There were a lot of boxes blocking their merch. I ended up ordering just a regular black cold brew and a latte. I can't say it was the best and was mediocre. Their ambiance is interesting. It was quiet with some tables on the side. Decided not to stay. I noticed they have a coffee lab across the way which I thought was pretty neat. I'm not sure if they give tours or allow people to go in. The coffee wasn't the best I've ever had so I'm not sure if I'll be back.
google avatar

Capers B.

Yelp
By far the best coffee in San Diego. Their drip coffee is great, but I'm a sucker for their crafted drinks. Staff is super friendly, drinks are delicious and pastries are pretty solid, too. Parking isn't the best here but I've never needed to circle more than once.

Yelp
*** Original visit was on 12/16/2023 *** Stopped in to the Marina location for a coffee and tea. The line was short, and we got our drinks super fast! I wasn't the biggest fan of the Chai tea, it was a little too spiced for me. Chai lovers, if you know you know. I think I'm more into Vanilla chai. My boyfriend loved the iced vanilla latte. We would come back!
google avatar

Rey D.

Yelp
They have the best latte in town, and they use Organic milk, the Strauss is not a cheap milk, I always buy organic milk too and if the roastery doesnt use organic they dont know about good things, the strauss milk os $10 a gallon, so this is the only roastery that ises good stuff. If you go to San Diego always just buy this latte, its really good
google avatar

Yelp
Do not visit this place unless you're okay with them stealing your personal information from a credit card transaction. I did not opt-in to sharing my contact info nor did I opt-in to your marketing spam. It's unethical business practice.

Yelp
I have been to this Bird Rock location many times as it is very close to one of the offices I work from. At first, I was very excited for a coffee shop to open up near that office, but actually stopped going there after a while. There are some things I like about this place, but others not so much. This seems to be quite popular. At is isn't really in a great location, other than near a couple small office buildings, it is really packed most of the time. The crowd can be quite eclectic... families, dogs, workers, and even a random dude with bare feet. I like that you can sit and drink coffee from an actual cup with a spoon and saucer. I also think that they have some very good pastries. My coworker likes their salads, but I haven't tried one, as they run out quickly, and don't even get any on some days. As far as their coffee, I am not a big fan. First, it is so expensive. My 12 Oz. cold brew from yesterday cost $4.99. Once you start ordering espresso drinks, it's only more and more expensive. I used to get my interns a $5 gift card from time to time, thinking that they could go choose their drink, but had to up it to $10 so they can have what they want. Also, there is a particular flavor to the coffee... somewhat of an after taste that is a bit acidic to my palate. Even if I have a caramel latte, I still taste that slight after taste. As this place is popular, I may be the only one who notices the after taste. They do have cute free stickers for kids and the merchandise they sell is really cute. All in all, I only will go from time to time because the location is so convenient for me. The staff is friendly, but it isn't my favorite coffee.
google avatar

Sophie E.

Yelp
Great service, the latte was really good but tasted more like spices/cinnamon than a stroopwaffle. Nice people inside. We went to the Fiesta island dog park right before and needed to take the large dogs to a dog friendly place. Would recommend.

Yelp
My husband and brother ran a marathon last weekend, and my friends and I were looking for a spot on their course from where to cheer them on. We decided to meet at Bird Rock Coffee after a quick search on Yelp. I opted for the the chia seed pudding and dark chocolate iced mocha. My sister and I ordered the same beverage even though we have different taste in coffee, and we both loved our drink! My group also tried their cinnamon rolls, scones, and chai tea, and nobody was left disappointed. Since we got there early morning, we were able to snag their limited parking spots and outdoor seating. We also brought along two pups with us and loved seeing so many other owners stop by with their dogs :) Check them out if you're in San Diego!

Michelle B.

Yelp
During our visit to the Morena Boulevard location, we had a disappointing experience. We usually go to the Del Mar one, where we've never had any issues. Yesterday, we went to this location at around 3:40 pm to grab two coffees. At 4 pm, the manager closed the store and closed the main door and told us that we had to exit through the back door. Two minutes later, she informed us that we had to leave the premises because they needed to clean the floor and no one could be present during that process. I had to leave with my half-full coffee, and they didn't even provide me with a lid. They should have informed us beforehand that they would close at 4 pm so that we could have been better prepared. We were disappointed with the service and attention we received, and we have decided not to return.

Yelp
This is my second time here and both times have been pleasant and easy going for us. I haven't seen it crowded but heard it could be a miss when busy. Place is always clean with a neat bathroom and there's good seating options inside with a few outside tables as well. I had a dirty chai the first time and it was really good not overpowering with the chai spices. This time, I had a Honey Latte and I was pleasantly impressed! Really nice flavor all the way to the end of the sips in the cup. I think they top with something sweet and perhaps a hint of salt ? Not sure but it was great! The iced coffee is definitely great quality brew with a bold flavor, toasted just right, and not bitter at all. Banana blackberry bread was a great compliment to the coffee! We will continue to come for sure since they are bike friendly! Thanks! Just hope during rush hour they can pick up the pace so that it's more feasible to get in and out quickly! Looks like the Chia pudding is a hit because they were sold out!
google avatar

Cyndi G.

Yelp
Great coffee and fun drinks to choose from. You can also order from the app. The only bummer is no cash.
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
Got the Left Coast Latte (salted caramel) for my first time here and the coffee taste amazing! The coffee is fresh roast and has a great distinct taste. A must try coffee shop if you are around the area or just visiting. It's a small little shop in the corner. Has a couple seats inside and outside, small parking on the side of the store or street parking.
google avatar

Rhonda F.

Yelp
Very good coffee and they serve food and pasterícese there too the service is fast and everyone is friendly

Yelp
I stopped in this Bird Rock location and order the Brown Sugar Seasonal Latte and the Lil Dippers for breakfast. The latte was very good and offered a nice brown sugar flavor and smooth rich coffee flavor. If you didn't know, the Lil Dippers are a pair of mini breakfast burritos filled with bacon, scrambled eggs, and cheddar cheese pre-made at one of their North County location at Bressi Ranch. The Lil Dippers come with a side sauce. The little burritos were good, but they need to properly heat them up because, although one was warmed thoroughly, the other was not and was cold. Also, the creamy sauce that came on the side had separated: the liquid was at the top and the contents were at the bottom. It just did not look appetizing. I would definitely apply a longer heating period in the convection for the Lil Dippers, so that they come out piping hot! Also, shake up those little sauce containers and check that they are good for serving!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Really good cold brew. Nice and rich and balanced. Very friendly service. Seems like they care about their quality of coffee.
google avatar

Lance M.

Yelp
Unbelievably slow. Baristas just visit and show no sense of urgency in the name of customer service.
google avatar

Ashlee M.

Yelp
This place is really good! The coffee is superb! And it's very relaxed feel inside of the location! Quick service! The only thing I will say which I know is not their fault is that there transients on the bench outside making a fire so outdoor seating didn't really feel like an option
google avatar

Jackie T.

Yelp
Was in the area and stopped by to get some coffee. Glad I did. The service was great. I didn't wait long for my coffee at all!! Great coffee and service. Will definitely come back when I'm in the area.

Yelp
We love this little neighborhood shop. We live across the street and have watched it grow and blossom. We come here for the monkey bread and the chai. Friendly, chill and easy-going vibe. You can sit indoors or outside. They also have a lot of cute items like small batch Madagascar vanilla syrup and ceramic mugs as well as logo printed T-shirts and aluminum water bottles for sale. Bring the kids too! They sell horizon organic low-fat milk and apple juice as well as exotically flavored kombucha and raw juices. If you're not a coffee person and they also have an extensive tea list hot or cold. *Please start accepting cash payments again!* (Not everyone wants to finance their food.) It also disenfranchises low income people who may not have the ability to get credit. Keep up the great work guys!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I've been to the Torrey pines location before but I like this one much better! Plenty of parking right in front and they have a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating as well. We got the pumpkin latte, almond croissant and a bag of the monkey bite espresso. For the beans, they can help you grind them to whatever size you like (french press for me). The pumpkin latte was pretty good. They usually come standard with whole milk but I got 2%. They also have skim as an option. It was sweet but not overwhelmingly so. The almond croissant was pretty basic. Definitely less almond paste and overall almond flavor compared to other places we've tried. My only real knock on the place is that the drinks and pastries are pricey, even for normal coffee shop levels today. My 12oz latte was $5.60 and the croissant was $4.

Yelp
Such a Zen and cheerful place. It just has a really great vibe. Nothing pretentious just welcoming. Coffee is excellent and they have a few food options and they are yummy too. Service is great! Just really nice people.

Yelp
been here several times and always love their coffee! service is fast and every drink is great. you can customize quite a bit for most drinks as far as dairy alternatives and sweetness. I usually get the sandpiper half sweet and it's fantastic! also love that they have space inside and outside to bask in the sun and breeze on a nice day.

Brandon C.

Yelp
This place is very slow. I came here on a Saturday morning around 10:30am, they had seven baristas, and it took 30 minutes for me to get two coffees that are $7 each. After I asked if I could get my coffee, they told me that online orders take priority. The crew seems like they could care less if people get there coffee on time and seems more like a social club. Not worth spending a half hour to get two coffees. It's kinda sad management allows this- this place could be great if they hired people who move quickly and were polite to customers.
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
My almond milk latte was pretty thin-bodied and it also just tasted like milk, no coffee. I wish it was a big stronger on the espresso taste, because it felt like I paid almost $7 for a cup of almond milk. I will say that my fiancé, who hates coffee, ordered the espresso tonic, and was really intrigued by it. I'm going to try to make it at home! It was a tasty drink. But sadly, I was not impressed at all with the latte and thought it was a waste of money. I did purchase two bags of espresso and house blend to grind and make at home, and they are pretty standard.

Yelp
I would not go all the way to this coffee shop but my friend and I were in Old Town and there were no other coffee places open (Christmas week and stores closing sooner). I did not like the layout of it, did not look cozy to me, although it good that there were plenty of tables and space for many people. Some merchandise here and there and pleasant/fast service. My capuccino tasted burnt which was a surprise from the Bird Rock brand. I will give another try if in the area, but was a bit disappointed.

Yelp
Love coming to our local coffee shop! Staff is really friendly! Coffee is delicious! My favorite is the sandpiper, 5/5 stars! I do wish they had more options available for breakfast items. Recently they have had a pizza stand outside which has breakfast pizzas and are really good!
