The Best Restaurants for Dining Out in Charlottesville, Virginia | Eater DC

"Chicken is the star of the show here, and what a chicken it is. Local, free-range, organic, and rotisseried to perfection the whole, half, and quarter birds cozy up to a selection of sides including a sublime celery and olive salad, Thanksgiving-worthy potato gratin, and a local favorite green pozole." - Stephanie Ganz

I think for a lot of people this restaurant could be 5 stars. The food was prepared very well and the service was great. But the seating feels really on top of each other and I never got a wow moment from the food. I think this could be due to the style of food - it felt very farm to table. Lots of mellow flavors, lots of butter & oil. We enjoyed our experience but I don’t think we’ll return. Very large wine selection, small beer & cocktail selection. Side note - the location is very odd - it’s almost a small house on an industrial street. It didn’t feel unsafe or anything, but certainly a curious walk coming from downtown.

This is now on rotation! What a great place. We lucked into a last minute reservation. Service was impeccable. Food was amazing! Saw room for the olive oil cake with fresh whipped cream. It is amazing. My only regret is that we didn’t get to try ALL the sides. They all looked amazing.

Google
It’s hard to find restaurant food that’s not super salty but everything here tastes like it’s homemade! I was so impressed by the flavor of the chicken and all the seasonal side dishes. A wonderful dinner experience!

The patio is so cozy and lovely! As a group of 4 we ordered the half bird and a ton of sides. Our favorites were the baked fennel and the eggplant.

Before I give my review let me acknowledge the warm inviting staff who instantly made us feel welcomed. Ok let's get into the food...The starter included a delicious surprise in the chicken confit. I am sure you will not be disappointed if you try this open faced sourdough chicken delight with shallots. Next stop was a rotisserie chicken (dark) paired with braised collards. The skin was crispy and the chicken was juicy as expected. Everything tasted just as good as it looked if not better. The warm environment invites conversations and family time as there are no distractions like television. The chef (from Romania) was friendly and knew exactly what he was doing. The mac and cheese had a delicious pecorino that is the spark of the dish. The olive oil cake with fig whip and candied kumquat made our day! This cozy restaurant is a must visit and you are welcome in advance.

Really nice, quaint. I like how small it feels and the staff are always a pleasure. I've sat at the bar the last three times and had something different every time, but always chicken & a side or two. Looking forward to trying the patio soon too..

Great place, we found the place by chance. Very nice, cozy, clean. The food is excellent. The bartender is welcome and very friendly.

Google
It was not where I expected it to be, a bit off the path, but worth it. Nice portions, and exceptional "bird". Fixed menu nights still have wide range of sides.

Yelp
Every. Single. Dish. Incredible. We literally ordered almost everything on the menu and licked every plate clean except the cabbage between just the two of us. The absolute musts were the chicken confit, polenta, celery salad and chicken. But we really also did love how fresh the green salad was and the potatoes au gratin were also amazing. My boyfriend really enjoyed the cabbage but I could have done without it. Flavorful, a little pickled, a little sweet and a little spicy. If you're in Charlottesville - this is a must try spot. Cute little hole in the wall with really really great quality food. If I were local, I'd definitely come back. Service was attentive and friendly also!

Yelp
This cute nook in the old Ace's bbq on Henry Ave is highly recommended. We ordered take out since there no reservations available. Food was hot and delicious when we picked it up. The side dishes are for sharing. So we ordered a 1/2 chicken to share with broccoli rabe and potatoes Au gratin. Also the posole soup and dessert of the day. The dessert of the day was an olive oil cake w fig cream. Very tasty and a perfect end to the delicious meal.

Yelp
Delicious food, well prepared, with unexpected flavor combinations of old fashioned dishes. Warm intimate atmosphere together with gracious staff and attentive owners. All together a wonderful evening and worthy of many return visits.

Yelp
Well it seems a lot has changed since I was there last! Unless you are the blue blood of Charlottesville you can expect sub par service! From the food service to the drink service I felt like a second class citizen. Shame on you Birdhouse. What I thought was a sanctuary within Charlottesville food scene turned out to be a nightmare. Think twice before you spend you money here! Richmond is only an hour away! Will never go back!

Yelp
Tried birdhouse for the first time. Service was good. The place is cute and small. No AC but it was still comfortable. The macaroni and cheese broccolini and potato gratin were really great. The chicken was good. I would recommend a reservation because they seem to have limited chickens. I felt like the wine/beer was a bit overpriced. Fun to go with a group and share. Overall was a nice meal

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY SUPERB restaurant!! The core of the menu is roasted chicken and the offering of sides is AMAZING!! Too many sides to choose from and each one is balanced, delicious and cooked to perfection. We over ordered to take some with and didn't over order enough! Service is caring and super attentive. Cocktails are excellent.

Yelp
Delicious, adorable discovery in Rose Hill. Cozy atmosphere. Excellent wine and cocktail menu, full bar, take out. Everything I tried was . Definitely going back.

Yelp
You want perfectly cooked chicken and amazing sides? Get here asap. Fav sides were chicken confit and the scalloped potatoes. Comfort food to the max.

Yelp
Went to Birdhouse for the first time last week and loved it. Service was great; chicken was tender and tasty. Sides were awesome - almost like "small plates," really. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
A tiny, perfect, wonderful restaurant. Probably about 10 tables total, and a few seats at the bar. True to its name, chicken is the focus of the menu - rotisserie chicken (quarter, half, or whole bird) and excellent sides (potatoes au gratin, greens, garlicky beans, etc.) Add the excellent celery-and-olive salad and grilled sourdough bread and you have yourself a meal. Just be sure to leave room for the olive oil cake and some great coffee.

Yelp
Both the food and service are amazing. If you like farm to table food and have not tried Birdhouse, you are missing out. Easily one of the best Restaurants in Charlottesville. BTW, the Pozole is fantastic.

Yelp
My new fave restaurant in town! Easily the best mac and cheese I've ever had, along with THE BEST collards. I am a pescetarian and I always order the collards and pretend I don't see the bacon--but it's just so yummy that I can't resist. And the other sides are pretty amazing as well--always hard to choose which ones, I want them all. Not to mention the olive and celery salad is the most uniquely satisfying dish I can recall ever trying, the way the flavors come together is perfection. My husband is a private chef and assistant winemaker and he raves about the chicken and eclectic wine selection. We can't wait to return for more!

Yelp
The food here is incredible! Everything our group ordered was delicious. Prices are reasonable and staff is friendly. I love the outdoor seating area too!

Yelp
Cozy restaurant in Rose Hill with delicious food and drinks! The chicken was perfectly done and the sides were delicious.
