Order Up to Ever After: How Five Austin Restaurant Couples Fell in Love | Eater Austin

"Chosen after a coin flip to stay in Texas, the owners built this counter-service/fine-dining concept from the initial concept through design, with him managing front-of-house and wine selection and her leading the kitchen; they emphasize deliberate communication and boundaries — they “schedule a meeting like true business partners” when they want to talk shop and have a rule that work talk is strictly off-limits when relaxing at home — and Arjav says, “As [we] mature as owners, leaders, and restaurateurs, we’ve now discovered a language that works for us.” The couple also candidly recounts the hard practicalities of parenthood while running a restaurant: Tracy expediting in the kitchen until she was nine months pregnant and the pair going a year without childcare, a period Arjav describes as brutal, but they credit mutual trust in each other and their staff: “The truth is, when you have someone you love and you trust, you can figure stuff out,” he says. This James Beard-recognized neighborhood spot won an award for best neighborhood wine bar in 2021, offers an ever-rotating menu of simple dishes done well (expect handmade pasta, minute steak with rotating vegetables like smoked cabbage, wine-friendly seasonal appetizers like fried green tomatoes), and finishes with dessert offerings like a creamy soft serve drizzled in olive oil and after-dinner drinks from the co-owner. It is walk-in only, features a modern dining room and shaded patios, and is known for occasional theme weeks (e.g., Italian-American or French) that draw lines; the restaurant typically opens at 5 p.m., and the team advises stalking their Instagram for low-line windows." - Lane Gillespie

Pretty good for a hotel restaurant ! I’m not a huge salad lover but my salad was quite flavorful! Delicious espresso martini too . Fries were crisp!!

Review for Birdies Café and Bar: I recently dined at Birdies Café and Bar, located right inside our hotel. Although it wasn't initially planned, circumstances led us to have our meal there after a long day of touring Houston. Overall, the experience had its ups and downs. For our main course, my boyfriend ordered the burger, while I opted for the chicken burger. Both dishes were satisfying and flavorful. The burgers were well-prepared and packed with delicious ingredients. As an appetizer, we ordered fries, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that we had the option to substitute the fries that came with our meals with salads, which turned out to be fantastic. The salads were a refreshing and we got to enjoy fried as well. While the food was enjoyable, the service had a few hiccups. Our server was friendly and accommodating, but there was a period of about 30 minutes where she seemed to have forgotten about us. In our particular situation, it wasn't a significant issue since we were staying at the same building . However, had it been a different scenario, it might have been more problematic. We did appreciate that our server acknowledged her mistake and offered us free drinks as an apology. At the end of our meal, when we were ready to pay, our server was nowhere to be found. We eventually asked the bartender to bill it to our room to expedite the process. In summary, Birdies Café and Bar provided a satisfactory dining experience. The burgers and the option to substitute fries for salads were highlights of the meal. Although there were some service mishaps, such as the server forgetting about us and being unavailable at the end, the overall service was friendly, and our server acknowledged her mistakes. Given the circumstances, it was an acceptable experience, but improvements could be made in terms of consistency and attentiveness.

I enjoyed myself. Brought my family. We were staying in the hotel. It was very convenient and the prices were acceptable. The food quality was great. I enjoyed the chicken tacos, bao buns, and tomato soup. The fries were very good and the aoli was delicious. My sons chicken was so good. I tasted it. We also got the Texas sheet cake and it was so rich and chocolaty. I enjoyed it. Will be back. Try it. It was easy and delicious.

I attended a real estate training at hotel. They have friendly service. I wish they offered more breakfast sandwiches. Then we finally realized at the bar they have speciality coffee, tea, and smoothies.

My wife and I had the pleasure of enjoying breakfast at Birdies, a charming café nestled within the Omni Hotel Houston. Despite being slightly overpriced, as hotel restaurants tend to be, the delectable dishes, convenience, and attentive service more than compensated for the expense. As a pancake connoisseur, I was delighted by the Triple Stack Griddle Cakes. These pancakes were a cut above the rest, boasting a fresh, fluffy texture with the ideal balance of moistness to dryness. Each bite was a mouthwatering ode to the perfect pancake. My wife opted for the Western Omelette, which proved to be an excellent choice. The omelette was satisfyingly filling without leaving a heavy sensation in the stomach—a testament to its well-executed preparation. The pecan wood-smoked bacon was another standout, offering the perfect crunch without being overcooked. Its delectable flavor left us craving more, and we couldn't help but wish for a few extra pieces on our plates. In summary, our breakfast experience at Birdies was an indulgent delight. Though it may be a tad pricey, the quality of the dishes and the convenience of dining within the Omni Hotel Houston make it well worth a visit. The next time you find yourself in need of a satisfying and scrumptious morning meal, be sure to give Birdies a try!

I am a hotel guest and didn't want to drive anywhere for dinner. I decided to give Birdies another try. (3rd time visiting) I ordered a smash burger without the egg or bacon. It was cooked perfect!!! Burger and fries was hot. Before I knew it, I ate the whole thing!! Ok Birdie, you have redeemed yourself from my 2 previous visits. My tab was only $19 and I left a $20 tip... it was THAT GOOD!!! Edited to add my 2nd trip review: The smoked salmon on bagel with grated egg is amazing. Great food, amazing staff. Jessie and Joseph both went above and beyond. Thought I'd help others by sharing the kids menu since I never found it, myself.

Yelp
My family and I stayed at the Omni for a week and we only ate breakfast and ordered coffee. I don't know how the other meals are but we loved breakfast. It was fresh foods and very tasty! Most of the servers were nice and some were amazing! It's clean and comfortable. They open at 6:30 am.

Yelp
In Houston on a business trip and had to rely on the hotel restaurant for sustenance. Always iffy, even at nice hotels like the Omni. I was pleasantly surprised! Pulled up a chair at the bar, and was greeted quickly by the bartenders. Sadly, I don't recall their names but it was two males on this Wednesday evening. At check-in, the guest services person said she loved the burgers at Birdie's when I mentioned my starved state. I don't do beef, so she suggested the chicken tacos. I also asked the bartender if he recommended the chicken or fish tacos, fish tacos are on the bar menu. He also likes the chicken, so winner, winner, chicken dinner! The salad was surprisingly good! The greens came with watermelon radish (seriously?!), cherry toms, green onions, and a sweetish but yummy white balsamic vinaigrette. More dressing than I prefer, but not too much more, and my Warren would have wanted more, so... The tacos were good. Not great, but not disappointing. The chicken had a sweetish sauce and even with the small cuts, the meat was moist. They used sliced avo, which, for small tacos, an avo guac or cream would be easier to eat. Also had some chopped toms and a leaf of cilantro. One leaf. Lol! And also used only one taco shell, which I liked. I would have liked some hot sauce, and maybe they had it, but they didn't offer and I didn't ask for it, so bad on me. Overall, I'm sitting in my room with a happy full belly writing this review, so thanks Birdie and team!

Yelp
Birdies is the in house restaurant/bar for the Omni Houston. I had an early breakfast. The staff are excellent, always friendly and attentive. I had the Western Omelette with potatoes. Everything tasted as it should, no complaints but also nothing spectacular. As with all hotel food, it's on the pricey side, but you're paying for convenience.

Yelp
Decent pricing and food for a Omni Hotel restaurant . Convenient and pretty quick. The salad was gross, but beyond that everything else was edible! I would not go out the way to eat here by any means but if you are staying there it's not a bad last resort

Yelp
I was here at Birdies in February 2020. My mentor Jayzen P visiting from California for a speaking engagement at Omni Houston Hotel upstairs. He had a busy schedule and we decided to meet here for lunch. Atmosphere was nice. I remember the chair was super heavy. I had to wait for hostess to seat us. Service was slow that day. Food was pretty fancy. I ordered Beef Brisket Bao, just pure curiosity. It was 3 scrumptious steamed sweet buns hugged some delicious roasted beef slices and Chinese flavored slaw. So fusion. I really wanted to go back visit again after this CoVid19 pandemic.

Yelp
A mediocre lunch at this hotel lobby restaurant. At the hotel for a conference, the in-house restaurant is the go-to for a quick lunch. I selected the BBQ rib Bao. 3 to a serving, the steamed rolls are soft and moist, but cold by the time they reached the table. The BBQ was tasty, but dry. The Asian slaw was bright and fresh, as were the greens. Definitely room for improvement. Also tried the corn velvet soup with gulf prawn dumplings. I envisioned a creamy corn chowder but this was very thin and watery, with a sprinkle of corn on top. The dumplings (2) were good, but tasted more like pork than shrimp. Big peeve... The soup was served without a spoon. The server said "l'll bring you one right away", but never did. I had to flag down one of the wait staff. Not cool to let the food get cold waiting for utensils.... Next time I'll venture out instead of dining here.

Yelp
You're better off ordering at the bar vs. getting room service. The service at the bar was great and the food was with it. I ordered the chicken sandwich and mac and cheese. Both were great and I'd recommend to anyone else in the area.

Yelp
5 stars for the Bartender as well as the 8 0z fillet, potato's,asparagus. If you like steak this is the place for you. The menu doesn't have a lot of options. 3 stars for breakfast. Food was ok but staying in a hotel because you want room service only to find out they don't have room service. On the phone they say that they do have room service. It's a lie. Waffles, pancakes and sausage were good. Carmel latte was flavorless and boring, 0 stars.

Yelp
I will say this the food is basic and not worth the price at all. Some portions were small and some were too big. They do not allow you to modify items and if you still want to change something you will be charged. Their menu is limited so if you are looking to please everyone in your party that may not be possible. I will say the food comes out quick. Service is so so, but should be better based on this establishments location and prices. I would not go back again.

Yelp
I tried the breakfast, dinner and the bar bc I stayed at the Omni hotel for several nights. The food and drink quality was fine (dinner was better than breakfast), the service was a little slow. Three stars for overall food quality (it was about what you would expect from a hotel restaurant with a captive audience - not great but not bad). One star for price bc it was very expensive, especially for Houston where you can get much better deals. My husband ended up going to Rudy's one morning for breakfast tacos and he ordered a ton of food for about half the price of my breakfast here. The only positive is that the portions are average to small, so at least there is no food waste (we ate almost everything except the breakfast waffles - my kids didn't seem to love them).

Yelp
Service here is just "okay." Neither here nor there which makes this place nothing to write home about. I came for lunch and had the kale pasta. The pasta was watery and made the texture hard to eat. I definitely could have made a better pasta at home and I don't cook. As soon as I took my first bite I knew I should have ordered something else but, unfortunately the menu is not very descriptive either, and feels like the blind leading the blind when asking for suggestions or recommendations. For service and food quality prices should be about 10% lower, would not return

Yelp
I had my doubts early on due to lack of choices on the menu. However that quickly changes due to the professionalism and friendly staff. I'm not completely sure of everything I ate seeing as I don't get out very often but what I ate was completely delicious. Awesome awesome visit

Yelp
First, I think anyone considering Birdies should know not expect anything to happen fast. It took about 40 minutes to get breakfast while it was (unsurprisingly) not overrun with costumers. So factor in a half an hour or so waiting time when considering birdies. The food was not very redeeming. After waiting almost an hour, I was extremely disappointed with the low quality of food. The pancakes were sour, and the eggs tasted fake. The only thing worth a penny here is the potatoes.

Yelp
The food, drinks and people were all good here but they must have had a lot of new employees because they were slow and confused about where everything was behind the bar and where to deliver the food. Hopefully this was a temporary issue and the servers will get trained. It's a good place for a hotel bar and grill.

Michael D.

Yelp
The staff has been very nice and attentive, the interior is very upscale, modern, and clean, and the breakfast buffet is very good. It's $21 a person for the breakfast buffet if anyone is wondering. The convenience factor is what makes that worth it for me. There's a very large selection, they make omelettes to order, and they have the COVID-19 precautions setup well.

Jessica N.

Yelp
The hamburger was heavily seasoned. The best thing was the corn soup. Customers beware- my can of Sprite and cup of ice to pour it in myself cost $4. I would not go back.

Yelp
the food was not that great and the service was horrible. we had a reservation for a small party on a Thursday night. they clearly didn't staff appropriately and didn't make any adjustments as they saw it wasn't working. I wouldn't come back for sub par food.

Mark K.

Yelp
The food at breakfast this morning was satisfactory, but service was unacceptable. My wife ordered breakfast tacos and had to ask for salsa ... this is Texas and tacos come with salsa. I had to ask for butter and jelly for my toast. That also should have been automatic. Getting the check was another ordeal. Five minutes after my wife left I ask the hostess for the check. Ten minutes later the server finally brought it out. Next time I'll leave this hotel for breakfast anywhere else.
