BIRD LAND

"BIRD LAND enchants guests with its wonderfully distinctive yakitori. With supple imagination and a wealth of experience, Toshihiro Wada crafts a new world of possibilities for the humble skewer.  Included among the skewers in his set menus are liver paté, chicken grilled in pepper and oyakodon (chicken and egg on rice). Always attentive to customers’ voices, he reveals the value of rare cuts such as chicken oyster. Determined to pass on his skills, he often works the grill with apprentices at his side." - Michelin Inspector

"Bird Land is a yakitori shop that shares the same subway basement space with two other famous restaurants: fifth-generation Nodaiwa and Sukiyabashi Jiro—yes, that Jiro. There is a brigade of staff behind the counter and a master who oversees orders like the conductor of an orchestra. Bits of chicken meat and organs skewered and grilled can be a casual meal under the train tracks, but at Bird Land it is elevated to haute cuisine. Pours from a well-curated wine list, including Austrian Grüner Veltliner and Australian shiraz, are served in Riedel glassware. The “course menu” is highly recommended: It starts with chicken liver paté and the classic chicken and egg over rice, oyakodon , along with the signature skewers."

Google
My friends and were looking for a yakitori dinner as it was one of our things to tick off the list before finishing up our holiday in Japan. We wandered around and although it was a bit hard to find, we ended up at birdland. From the very first moments, the staff were polite and accomodating. Although they were full they worked really hard to fit my friends and I in for dinner. The service was outstanding, even in comparison to the amazing service that is typical of Japanese hospitality. Each dish that came out was a delight and being able to sit at the counter to see the chef masterfully cook each individual dish was an absolute treat. Some things to expect is that similar to many other grilled meat places, you need to order a drink (non alcoholic options were provided) and as expected from the name this restaurant mainly serves chicken. My friends and I had the omakase option and I cannot fault this restaurant at any point. Absolutely a hidden gym and would highly recommend.

BIRD LAND enchants guests with its wonderfully distinctive yakitori. It crafts a new world of possibilities for the humble skewer, like liver paté, chicken grilled in pepper and oyakodon (chicken and egg on rice). Always attentive to customers’ voices and it‘s very interesting to watch the chef‘s at their grill. We had the menue with several courses. It was definitely worth the visit and experience but the price-performance-ratio is challenging. The chicken/duck is on high quality but we missed the extraordinary. We really struggled to find BIRD LAND because you have to enter the Building and go to the basement.

Great place for a slightly higher end yakitori experience! Sitting at the counter you get to see the chefs in action grilling the food right in front of you. You can choose from a few different set menus that varies in the amount of skewered meats and dishes you get or you can order a la carte as well. I really liked the simplicity in their flavoring of the meats that allows you to experience the freshness and taste of the ingredients rather than the seasoning.

Google
Wonderful chicken Yakitori skewers! And the “side” dishes are also recommended (we had the grilled cheese and grilled white asparagus). We had the fixed menu with 8 of the chef’s selection. Most seats are around the grilling area and you can see the whole preparation process. Welcoming staff and menu is also in English. We also enjoyed the Japanese vibe. Recommended to reserve your seat in advance. Locating the place was easy: there’s a sign on the street level, then you go 1 level down to B1 and open a door on your right

Incredible yakitori - omakase with extras was amazing. Bite after bite of chicken & binchotan flavour. Wow!

Very good food but with some hits and misses, I’m not sure it is what I expected - especially for the price (I ordered the omakase with all the bells and whistles). My favorite items were the pickled chicken skin, chicken liver pate, chicken liver skewer, skin and neck meat skewer, and cheese skewer. I could eat a whole jar of the chicken liver pate: Delicious! Outside of these, the remaining items weren’t remarkable. I did not like the tomato and micro green salad, and I think they overcooked my breast meat skewer. I personally also don’t like to eat oyakodon and was hoping this would change my mind: Nope, I guess I will just never like it. If I were to come back, I would just order the items that they nailed this time and skip the rest. There are some real gems on the menu; it’s a pity that not everything is executed at the same level.

Google
Birdland was recommended to me by someone who ate here about 10 years ago. I'm happy I went. The chicken was surprisingly tender and felt magical. The taste was above average at best, but the texture makes it deserving of the Michelin guide/star(not sure). The drinks are a little overpriced, though. Otherwise, would recommend for a one time thing!

Google
MAR 2024 Had dinner at the counter and ordered the mid-price chef's omakase which includes eight yakitori and some small dishes throughout the course. The yakitori, chicken pate, grilled cheese and mini oyako don were tasty but felt the contents were a bit lacking for the price, also no dessert was included in the course. They do have ala carte menu if you want to order more skewers. Service was good and the staff was attentive.

Yelp
Birdland restaurant in Tokyo, highlighting its exceptional quality and unique dining experience. It's located on the lower level floor, literally right across from the famous JIRO 3 Michelin Stars sushi place on Netflix and Anthony Boudin! Shows. Birdland stands out for its meticulous attention to detail, particularly in its yakitori dishes. I praise the restaurant's use of premium ingredients and its masterful execution of traditional techniques, which result in flavors that are both authentic and innovative. I also appreciates the warm and inviting atmosphere of Birdland, noting that it perfectly complements the culinary artistry on display. We went with omakase with 8 skewers, appetizers, chicken broth, egg & chicken rice dish at the end, delicious. Fantastic wine list for wine lovers, expect to be wow with their Burgundy selection, including DRC, La Tach... Overall, if you love everything chicken, as the name says it all, considers Birdland a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts in Tokyo.m and well deserved Michelin Guide. Note: For American who will freaks out to see chicken is slightly undercook, please don't embarrass yourself to come here! Be respect, make reservation, and enjoy the traditional!

Yelp
Birdland shares an underground corridor with sushi mecca Jiro. Although it does not have the fame of its illustrious neighbor, Birdland is one of the very few Yakitori restaurants in Tokyo or elsewhere. If you like Yakitori then Birdland is a must. Service is excellent.

Came here for dinner, had the chef's omakase course. Was very good and everything was delicious.

Yelp
Hands-down, the best yakatori we have ever had. Also one of our favorite meals while in Japan. It is great to sit at the bar and watch all the chefs in action. We got the largest meal you could get with multiple side, dishes, and several skewers. If we ever go back to Tokyo, we will definitely visit again!

Yelp
I greatly enjoyed the food at Birdland. It caters to its name in all things from the venerable chicken. The skewers are all made to order and the quality of the chicken is phenomenal. Everything was cooked to perfection. I would enjoy making a return trip to this restaurant.

Yelp
I read the not so good reviews posted here. I didn't have any problems finding Birdland as I was a guest and my host was so good in preparing a first class experience for me. I'm sure it was an extremely expensive dinner with all of the wine, sake and drinks we had. First rate yakitori done right. It's better than the LA and NYC yakitori places I've been to. And it's way better than sitting at yatais outdoors under train station overpasses. Presentation is half of it. I probably would never be able to find バードランド when I return to Tokyo next year.

Yelp
Certainly there are more ppl that patronize than care to review, or know about Yelp. By 7, the 3 sided bar was full and bustling. I didn't eat one untasty skewer. Standouts were the tsukune ( soo incredibly juicy, so balanced and rich in chicken flavor) and the reba ( liver ). Cooked to perfection on the wood grill. Chef no longer used electricity and chef too no longer gets his shamo from Iwate. Now chickens come from 3 hrs away, from Ibaraki. Sorta like that chinese muscular chicken who runs all day long and is lean and more concentrated in flavor ( zeow day gai). Pleasant experience watching everything before your eyes, as open a kitchen as one will find!! Price is $$! Small skewers, 2 piece to a skewer. Haute yakitori, for sure.

Yelp
I was really excited for this dinner because it was one of the few reservations we had before coming to Tokyo. Recommended by a travel companion's brother, I heard Michelin star and was already impressed. We took the subway here to Ginza from Shinjuku and yes it was VERY HARD to find. We were delayed about 10 minutes just walking around every corner trying to find this place. My best advice is to ignore the address and look for "The Suit Company" entrance look to your right, and go down the stairs (to basement level). This is considered upscale yakitori and yes, the portions are small. However, we didn't find the prices too bad. Three women ate dinner for about $75. We didn't do the tasting menu, just ordered what we felt like off the English menu. I would agree the food was just "fine." Is it super American to have loved the grilled cheese stick?! It was probably pollyo strong cheese lol. We also really enjoyed the grilled pine nuts (a surprise winner). My personal favorite was this complimentary egg rice thing that comes at the end of your meal. Yum! I read mixed reviews on service but we didn't have any issue, even arriving late we were still allowed to dine in. People without reservations were turned away due to prime dinner crowds. Would I recommend this place? Sure. It was a good experience. But also wouldn't say to be upset if you missed it.

Yelp
Birdland is way overrated for what it is. The skewers with basil and apricot sauce are good. The chicken with skin attached was also good. The 800 yen beer was good, but other than that, everything was mostly whatever. One of the chefs acts super entitled. The one who speaks the best English out of the 6 or so that were standing around. He needs to chill on the snark before that 1 Michelin star becomes a no Michelin star. I've had better and don't plan on returning here.

Yelp
My experience at Bird Land was ok. When we entered we were greeted enthusiastically by the staff and promptly seated. They took great care explaining how everything worked and how much each option would cost. Once I had informed them of the likes and dislikes of my dining companions, we settled for having the chef prepare a special for us. The meal went without a hitch, tasty and good all around but I found many pieces to be a bit too for my liking. I am not sure if this is down to the cooking or the type of chicken they used, but it really was not a chewiness I have encountered in all the other yakitori places I had visited. Wine selection was good, they treated our two young dining companions very well as well. In conclusion - great customer service, nice food save for some (personal?) objections to the texture of the skewers. Probably good to bring a first-timer just to sit at the counter for the spectacle of the large open grill kitchen in the middle.

Yelp
Kind of a fun place to head for dinner, but not sure that the food is anything special. We enjoyed the milieu - the bar was loaded with lots of couples out for the evening. It was terrific people watching. We were presented with an English menu (I'm sure edited for everyone's benefit) with two set menus offered. We opted for the smaller one and it was plenty. Our waiter wisely (and through the lens of experience) asked if we'd prefer to substitute the chicken liver skewer for another option. We took him up on his thoughtful offer. The skewers were all good, though subtlety flavored (don't expect big, or even little spice). Pro tip - Japanese Chicken can be cooked less than fully (who knew?). We were served several skewers which were (by American standards) only partially cooked. My wife (the salmonellaophobic) wouldn't eat them. The kids and I are made of sterner stuff and dug right in - we were fine. Birdland was fine, and an interesting place to have a meal. The food was good, but I think really nothing special. And, there was no jazz.

Yelp
Michelin yakitori in ginza that promotes wine with yakitori vs the traditional beer? Sign my up. This place was great. Not as good as Raku Toridokoru in Vegas or Torigin in Kamata but still exceptional. Con: shared bathrooms with other restaurants since real estate is a premium in Tokyo and especially Ginza. Pro: you may run into Jiro since his restaurant is next door. I was star struck when I met the man at the bathroom sink

Yelp
Don't know how many people in Japan check Yelp, but hopefully this review helps someone! We ate at Bird Land for our last meal in Tokyo because all of our other nights were booked. Bird Land allows reservations via Open Table so you theoretically do not need to know how to speak Japanese. I have an OT account in the US, but OT US and OT Japan run on two different systems, so they're not linked. You would need to make an OT Japan account to be able to reserve here. I ended up not making another account because I don't know how often I would use it in Japan, so I just walked in. The place is initially a bit hard to find, but if you're facing the entrance of "The Suit Company," look to your right, and go down the stairs (to basement level). The stars are actually to a subway line, but once you're down the stairs, make a left and walk straight. You'll see Bird Land right in front of you, and to the right of bird land, you will see Jiro Ginza right next to the bathrooms. Anyway, Bird Land has 1 Michelin star, and I'm not entirely sure why. The food was decent, but I feel like I've had better yakitori elsewhere. My friend and I both ordered the Omakase. She ordered the smaller version, at 6300Y, and I ordered the larger one at 8400Y. Each Omakase comes with assorted appetizers, chicken liver's pate, 8 kinds of yakitori, a side of terriyaki chicken, and oyako -don (chicken and egg on rice). The larger omakase comes with these extras: char-grilled filet (chicken), char-grilled cheese, and a dessert. Overall, I'm not sure if the larger omakase is necessarily worth it, or if eating there was even worth it. With the US to Yen exchange rate, we paid about $150 for 2 people, which is a decent meal considering they have a star. The restaurant is decent sized, they have two tables that are not attached to the bar that can seat 6, and 4. The bar is a 3-sided bar that wraps around the center where they do the skewers. The bar can probably seat around 25 people. When I arrived, I was immediately disappointed that we were seated at a table (to share with two other people), when there were clearly seats at the bar. I don't know if it was because we didn't make a reservation, or because we're foreigners. Whatever it was, didn't leave a good taste in my mouth at the start of the meal. The restaurant closes at 930PM (2130), but I think if you come any later than 830 and the restaurant is full, they would not seat any more so plan accordingly. We saw this Japanese couple get turned away because a part of 1 guy from Indonesia came in 2 mins earlier. The servers, unless you get the one that looks like he's mixed ethnicity, hardly speaks english. It was hard to figure out what something was if you didn't already know. Overall, I wouldn't come back. It was a good meal, but I don't think the variety of skewers given was that great.

Yelp
This was my first authentic yakatori restaurant, and It didn't disappoint. From the food to the ambience I was impressed. I found it a little difficult to order but the staff were very friendly and pointed me in the right direction. I'd recommend going with the tasting menu if available. Like many places in Tokyo this restaurant was located below the Main Street and right above the subway making it a little tricky to find at first.

Yelp
Showed up w the wife about an hour Before closing- restaurant had maybe a dozen people. We were quickly seated and provided with an English menu. We ordered a handful of things: the heart (holy holy), the gizzard (good but eh), the breast and the thigh (moist), and the grilled cheese. Everything came out as quick as it could- we sat at the bar and watched them grill the chicken in front of us. Service was on point, and everyone in the joint was happy to be there.

Yelp
I recently fulfilled one of my Tokyo food fantasies, and dined at Birdland in Ginza. The yakitori was fantastic! Every bite was worthy of their Michelin star. I particularly liked the casual atmosphere, true to yakitori restaurants all around Japan. The chef is truly passionate about creating the best yakitori for his customers. I loved it.

Yelp
Pretty amazing food. Maybe not great for picky eaters, by far the best heart i've ever eaten. Entrance hard to find, you may want to arrive early to make sure you can find it.
