Critic: Pastel’s Worthy of Michelin Stars | Eater Montreal

"At the Mediterranean couscous, tapas and hummus bar Birona, I found there was too much going on across its two menus and the food stumbled as a result: décor and cocktails get a nod, and the hummus plate and shakshouka fare well, but the chicken shawarma plate was a “slow train‑wreck” of collected spreads and fillings. With so much to choose from for dinner, Birona would benefit from a more “streamlined” treatment to trim down and refine the selections." - JP Karwacki

I am the parent of two children who have been a part of the competitive team at Birons. It has been a sad experience. The coaches, while personally very nice, are incredibly inexperienced. The Biron teams regularly finish very low in meets. It’s sad to see the girls working hard but not being given the requisite coaching to succeed. Prior to my younger daughters joining this gym, my older daughter competed out of another gym about 10 miles away- Discover. At Discover, they were taught by former Olympians. The gym regularly wins first or second at its meets, and the girls individually go on to state and beyond. We are leaving Birons due to its poor performance and will instead make the long drive to Discover so that my daughter will have an opportunity to succeed, Today when notifying the gym, the gym tried to force me to pay for four months all at once. I told them no. I ultimately told them they are not authorized to make another charge to our card on file. However the moment I left, they charged our card anyway for $295. AVOID BIRONS AT ALL COST.

Be careful when you sign up any program with them. My boy was join the ninja class last year and I am pretty sure that I only sign up that semester and his class end in Dec 2024. But I just realized they have been keep charging me monthly fee until July 2025 and I reach out them to see if any make up or credit they could offer for us and they just ignore my emails and I physically went to front desk twice but nobody could help. I asked the front desk lady that why wouldn’t anyone contact us if we still in the program and didn’t show up for 7 months and she said he doesn’t care as long as my bank account keep charging successfully . If I receive any subscription email from them in the past 7 months realized that we are still in the program that I could let my boy come. But nobody doing anything and the attitude they treat their clients is not be expected at all! They act like they don’t care their student but just the money! I am super disappointed!

I had my grandson birthday party here and I was so impressed by the staff and the gym. I visited the gym with my grandson for the fall festival he feel in love with the place and wanted his party there. Everyone was so professional and kind. They set up everything big plus. They we polite and very engaging to the kids they laughed and played them throughout the different parts of the party. When it came to time for food and cake they again were amazing. They passed out everything and waited on the kids as if they were at 5star restaurant. I forgot to mention I had a few added decorations that I wanted to add ( they setup all the decorations) and they accommodated my changes with a smile and asked was there anything else. He told me he wants to join the gym because he so much fun. All the kids were so excited and said they want to come back

My daughters go to Birons and it has been a horrible experience. Lainey the manager charged me twice for membership fees for the same kids. When I tried to speak to her about this she just yelled. She also charged me for classes we did not register for. When I asked her to give me the email of the owner she refused to give it to me. They are horrible staff and your kids get overlooked there.

My daughter is 5 and only joined this gym about a month ago. BIG GYM! Very nice gym with lots of different areas throughout the gym for kids to jump and tumble around. I homeschool so decided to join the homeschool program that's on Thursdays. I noticed we are never greeted while entering the gym yet I noticed other families and kids are. My daughter has had several different coaches but on this day (Thursday October 6) a new coach I've never seen before (brown hair with glasses I think she teaches the preschool class) my daughter is the only black kid in that class and as I watched them warm up I noticed the coach with the glasses never greeted/acknowledged my child or even talked to her and introduced herself. As I think about it neither did her regular coach. I had to literally go up to her on the 2nd week of class and ask her what her name was and I thanked her for the class. MIND YOU THIS CLASS IS SMALL THERES ONLY 3 or 4 GIRLS IN THIS CLASS!! I also had my son do a trial class on a Saturday morning a ninja class (a lot more people and way busier on the weekend) I had specifically explained to the girl at the front desk my son has autism. Again my son was the only black kid in the ninja class. At first he was very nervous and was starting to cry while on the trampoline. The coach never acknowledged him or that he was crying. As the day went on my son got more comfortable and started having fun. However I did hear and notice rude remarks from one of the other little kids to my son. Again this was not acknowledged (maybe the coach didn't hear him) The gym does have several black coaches on staff but not a lot of minorities who are memebers. I don't know I'll give it another month and see. My daughter does enjoy the classes though!! I've seen other reviews and families have had great experiences I'm just stating what I've observed these past few weeks. We've been here almost a month and I can't tell you not one employees name here. We aren't acknowledged or spoken to.

I decided to sign my daughter up for their free trial because I saw the school had good ratings. First of all, they had so many kids in each group they couldn’t pay attention in details, but it’s understandable. After the class was over, no one cared to speak with me about enrolling. Still, I wanted my daughter to attend. So I sent them an email saying I want to go ahead and enroll, please advise how to move forward. Weeks go by, and I haven’t received a response so I thought they were to full or just didn’t care for my business. A few months later, I received a bill from them! Showing all the months I didn’t pay?! Mind you after the free trial I never went back. So I emailed them and their response was that I emailed stating I was interested in enrolling so my daughter was signed up and thats why I’m being billed. So I emailed back stating I never received a response. They stopped responding. A few weeks later they sent me the bill again. So I responded the same thing, and they stopped answering me. They had the nerves to send me to collections, when they don’t know how to respond. I’ve found this whole interaction with them very unpleasant and unprofessional. As a business, the least they can do is respond. I do not recommend this school, it’s over crowded, no proper communications, the ladies sitting at the computers are rude.

I read another mom's review about how her/her kids were being overlooked due to their race and I am here to share my experience. I had been rudely spoken to by the staff/management for a couple of times in the gym. Most recently when my toddler was playing in an open area covered by mats, and just as I realized there was a coaching session starting I led my child to leave. It was at this moment a staff member rushed to me and declared, unnecessarily loudly and rudely, that I should stay away from the area for the safety of everybody. First of all, there was no sign in this area so it is never clear when can people hop on there to play. I have seen kids playing in this area too many times while there was a private coaching session going on, not to mention I had asked the permission from a coach ( who was sweet and supportive) before my kid stepped on the mats. Secondly, there is a playground for younger kids but that area is constantly taken over by older kids running around. When I informed the staff about this situation they just shrugged and said some of those kids are the kids of instructors. I thought the management should place the safety of ALL kids equally important. Overall, disorganized management and lack of protocols are what I would comment on about this place if my experience was not due to discrimination. There also seems to be a disconnection between management and coaches quite a lot. Some coaches are sweet and attentive though.

Absolutely terrible, dirty, unorganized summer camp. They have small children under the age of 5 outside on the concrete in direct sun with heat index over 100deg F. A camp at a gymnastics camp and the kids have very limited if any exposure to gymnastics is not acceptable. Last but not least, the energy from the instructors is sub par and when asked questions you get to the third or fourth instructor before you get an proper answer. Poorly run, poorly managed and I am surprised they have not been reported to the state for how this place is handling kids particularly around unsafe environment on concrete parking lot in >100 heat index weather here in Houston. See attached picture of the unacceptable outside kids play area during summer camp.
