LA’s New Restaurant Openings - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"The chef behind Macheen has a new sandwich counter in Paramount called Birote Deli. It took roughly 0.5 seconds for their tortas to grab our attention. There’s a chicharron banh mi, a Oaxacan pastrami sandwich with quesillo and honey chipotle slaw, and crispy mushroom chorizo with caramelized onions and swiss. " - Sylvio Martins

Google
Food was great. Had the birria and bahn mi torta. The birria consome to dip the sandwich was so good! The bahn mi was perfectly spicy and sweet. Great food. I would appreciate more signage to indicate that you order at the same register as the horchata location but, other than that, great place.

Google
I already knew Birote was going to be amazing because I had tried the tacos at Macheen in East LA. I ordered the Birria Birote and it was AMAZING!! The consome dip was so delicious too! The birria itself has an amazing and unique deep flavor of spices, paired with some gouda cheese, and the dip was thicker than your average caldo which made it perfect for the bread. Can’t wait to come back and try the other sandwiches. Highly recommend!!

My wife and I came by to try out the new spot inside of Horchatería. We both got the oyster mushroom torta. I'll start off with the pros: The flavor is definitely there! It's oyster mushroom marinated in adobo, topped with arugula and garlic aioli, paired with Swiss cheese. As someone who doesn't usually like mushrooms, I finished all of it! We both opted for light arugula. Their esquite was delicious!! That side is worth the visit alone. Now for the cons: The bread (which I believe is birote), was very hard, almost as if it were stale or old. I left half the birote as it was too hard to finish, opting to finish the meat with a fork. The garlic aioli is with the arugula, so if you finish that first, there is not much sauce left leaving the bread too dry. I'll definitely be back, but I'll have to give them some time to figure out the bread situation.

Google
First time trying and it is delicious, got the Oaxacan pastrami and wouldn't definitely go back again, bread was fresh and ingredients very fresh

Google
Got the Barbacoa, nicely loaded with meat and a nice blend cheese and topping. Dip was a plus but sandwiche was good by itself

Yelp
wow let me tell you guys something. these churros was an life altering experience in the best way possible. it saved my life to say the least. the churro frappe was also an unexpected delight. the service was superb as they kept up with my inability to pick only 2 things from the menu. this place is bigger than i thought as well.
google avatar

Alondra G.

Yelp
My initial reaction to this place was "Wow, it's really spacious in here!" I love the modern Mexican aesthetic the place has. My family picked the churro sundaes. 10/10. I had an horchata Oaxaqueña. 10/10 as well. We will be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here specifically for the Churro Sundae. The churros were freshly made and had a great flavor. They were not as crispy as I like them on the outside, but the inside was warm, slightly chewy, and soft like I like them. Perfectly paired with the guava and lechera sauce it was smothered with. Ice cream was a great addition as well. The place is huge! Service was good. They also serve breakfast. Great place for dessert!

Yelp
The ambiance and cleanliness inside of this cafe was very impressive! I was told to go here by a friend. It's like a rustic industrial warehouse vibe inside with lots of homey hispanic decor. After waiting at the counter and looking at the menu for a while (because only one guy was working.. doing both drive thru and the front!!), I picked out the Horchata frappe. The only thing was I expected to taste more of the Horchata flavor.. I feel like it was a creamy milk frappe with very tame expresso and lots of cinnamon powder shaken on the whip cream. Unfortunately it tasted alright to me, but hopefully it was just because the barista was in a rush being by himself and didn't do things correctly? I did enjoy relaxing on the couches but I found myself not really wanting to finish my drink. If I were to come back here, I'd only do so if someone invited me or if I wanted to study in here. Not sure if I would want to go back again on my own. Bathrooms were big and clean inside. The pastries and bakery items look promising.

Yelp
Upon entering this relaxed cool vibed spacious coffee shop/cafe I was pleasantly suprised to see how beautiful the decor is, how well spoken customer service is. The menu is perfect and there are vegan options. Food was delicious and very well prepared and plating was very neat.

Yelp
I was pretty surprised at how large the interior is for a cafe that sells drinks and some breakfast items. I was craving some coffee and I heard about this spot as a recc. I love horchata so as soon as I saw the name, Horchateria Rio Luna, I thought why not? There wasn't any written info on the menus that nondairy milks were offered, but thankfully the barista mentioned they had almond milk or oat milk as a substitute. I got the Iced Horchata Latte with oat milk, and to be honest, I had trouble tasting the Horchata flavor I love. It tasted like a vanilla latte with cinnamon powder tossed ontop. It was good though, but as I drank it, the remaining bits of powder at the bottom of the drink made the texture chalky. So I didn't fully finish it. Anyways, the coffee was pretty decent and once again, the interior blew me away at how cozy it is with several couches and so many tables to sit at. Free wifi with password written at the counter. Definitely a good spot with AC to use a laptop for study. *free parking / wifi *unique Mexican decor *breakfast items also served *has a drive-thru as well

Yelp
Horchateria Rio Luna was lovely! Lots of menu items and lots of indoor seating. Great spot to meet up with friends and enjoy a sweet treat. The coffee was alright- not really my taste. It was strong and had lots of cinnamon. I would still come back and try something different!! Service was quick and I enjoyed spending time there.

Yelp
Food: 9/10 Service: 9/10 Ambiance: 10/10 Great place if you have a sweet tooth or just want great churros. They're made to order so definitely will be hot and fresh. Staff is friendly, attentive and keep this place very clean. Lots of parking and lots of room inside for groups, or anyone trying to get some work done. Check em out!

Yelp
I have been coming here for years and I'm so proud of how much this place has grown. Still holding true to its mom and pop roots, this cafe has blossomed into something well deservingly big!! Matcha is now on the menu with the green tea horchata (and frap) and their pan/pastry case continues to expand. This spot is so big with chill music at all times. Great art on the walls. Large spacious tables.

Yelp
Came here on a whim. Glad I did! The atmosphere is really chill inside, it's huge and it was very warm inside. The food meal is available from 7am to 2pm. I ordered cafe de la oja- it was a little sweet, so after drinking it about halfway. I went, and I had them refill it with regular coffee and they were very sweet and offered to give me a new cup of regular. I am planning to go back to try the food. I will go back to enjoy the coffee and desserts.

Yelp
Came in for lunch and we both ended up getting breakfast. Loved the fact that b'fast is served until 2pm - nice bonus! Service was great. The staff welcomed us when we walked in which was very nice. I was blown away on walking in to this very spacious, very open, and warm café. Lots of room around the tables, lots of artwork on the walls, a nice little spot to buy little things like coffee mugs and related items. I took lots of photos - that's how much I liked what I saw. I ordered the "3 all natural fluffy pancakes, coconut cream, AND organic maple syrup. Slap me now - I'm in Southern California and they are service MAPLE SYRUP?! I immediately ordered this. My friend ordered the barbacoa breakfast burrito. I have to say that my pancakes were just delicious. Listen, I've been to a café in downtown Lake Placid, NY - in the heart of maple syrup country - and they did not service maple syrup - you couldn't even pay for it. Crazy! So HRL get's kudos from this displaced Canadian who loves maple syrup on his pancakes. In fact, when the owner (David) came by I complimented the fact the dish was excellent and the syrup was literally the caviar on top. My buddy loved his b'fast burrito. I'm coming back, but I wonder if I will ever try anything other than the pancakes with maple syrup. Yum, yum, yum. By the way, I had my first horchata (plain) here. Really enjoyed it!

Yelp
My first time here, I got the bacon breakfast burrito and Horchata Iced Coffee. I will be coming back to try the rest of the menu! The food was very tasty and hot! As well as the ice coffee refreshing and yummy!

Yelp
Horchateria Rio Luna is one of those spots where once you try it your always going to wanna come back. The ambiance is a very retro Latino cafe. They have a lot of cool little Knick knacks souvenirs where you can buy . The service is ok not the best but not bad . The food is mid to high point but your paying for the experience and also the quality of the food and pastries there ! Overall if your around the area check them out !
google avatar

Lupe H.

Yelp
Love this place! The interior is beautiful and very welcoming as it displays many loved Latino culture items. The only disappointing thing when I go is the wait in the drive thru, they take forever. The drinks are pretty good, had the iced horchata latte, but it bugs me that they put it on a regular cup. I wanted the cup to have a sticker of their logo so that I could post it and show support but couldn't. Get some stickers! Def recommend this place!

Shelby R.

Yelp
Years ago this place would have gotten 5 stars however the drinks have been consistently getting more bland each time I visit. I was excited/looking forward to this drink all day and overall I'm disappointed with the lack of flavor. Staff is mildly friendly and the decor is nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly, I decided on this coffee/pastry place as a mid-way stop between L.B and L.A., and I'm so glad I decided to! This location is lovely, clean and so spacious with high ceilings and plants and decor that makes the environment very pleasant. I ordered the green tea horchata latte with a cream cheese jalapeño pastry, which were both very delicious and filling, and the perfect wake-up snack I needed to continue the ride. The staff was great, and the gentleman who took my order was very friendly and welcoming. (P.S. I hope you get the ZR6R!). Thank you so much!
google avatar

Yelp
If you're running late to work and craving a hot beverage, Horchateria is not it! I ordered an over priced latte this morning ($7.17) and stood behind 2 cars for 17 mins! Then I get to the window and no good morning (nor at the speaker), none the less a "Thank You" or "Have a Good Day" (absolutely nothiing shared) after being handed my long awaited drink. Guess being polite and respectful at this establishment is not the thing! Very disappointing, not just in the poor slow service, but the lack of customer service makes it's tough to support your community coffee shop!

Yelp
Vegan options are really great. Service was good. Ambiance is really relaxing. My only problem is that the staff don't give the correct information. I called the night before to check the hours of operation , their site shows 6 am but they are not open until 7 am that's cool I asked the employee will you have the famous Churros at opening time , she said YES , I deny out of my way to get them and when I got there I was told , " oh we don't have those until 8:30 not a big deal but they should give the correct information.

Yelp
The churros and drinks were had were all really good. We ordered the systems churros to share between 3 people and they were perfect. Fresh out, soft yet crunchy, a good balance of cinnamon and drizzle. We also ordered drinks: the Choco frappe, churro frappe, and steamed horchata. The steamed horchata was the best drink and probably what I would order when I return. It's on the sweeter side that's how I prefer my drinks. Choco frappe and churro frappe were pretty standard iced blended drinks. The churro frappe was surprisingly not as sweet as I thought it would be. This is a cafe so you order at the front then wait for your drinks and food to come out. We went after 8 pm so it was pretty chill that time. Plenty of seats for both small groups and big groups. The wall art is also very fun!

Yelp
Same as another review stated. Came to get concha's for a potluck at work. On top of them not having any pastries available, it took 15 minutes in the drive thru just for coffee. Was not greeted with a good morning or have a nice day. I love their concha's but not sure if it's worth the gamble of driving to see if they're available or not when the service is also bad.

Yelp
Pros: *Great customer service. *Several choices of coffee and ice blended drinks, *A lot of sales items, like coffee cups and Concha gift items. *Artistic Atmosphere. *A lot of seating. *Clean restrooms. *Horchata ice cream was good. *Churros was okay. *Horchata ice drink was good. Cons: *Limited small parking. *Cafe de Olla blended ice drink, was too watery, had no flavor. *Food and drinks are pricey for the quality of food and drinks. *Ordered danish with cream and strawberry, it tasted dry. *Overall food is mediocre. Most likely will skip this place next time.

Yelp
My colleague picked up some coffees for us before a meeting. I've been in once and it was such a cool vibe. One day I'll I'll sit down and enjoy my coffee there. I ordered the Pumpkin Horchata and it was absolutely delicious.

Yelp
So i remember this at its old location and thought i lost it forever and a friend showed me where they moved. i was absolutely thrilled! Lots of parking and they now have a DRIVE THRU!?! Amazing. As soon as you walk in you see lots of tables and chairs and it's such a large space. Reminded me of starbucks but BIGGER and a better vibe. Service was ok nothing special or negative to say. my items came out about the same time so that was good! I got the famous horchata frap and some mini churros with the sauces on the side. flavor for the drink was amazing. The churros tasted good but were really bready. Maybe i got there on a funky day so definitely going back again.

Yelp
Haven't been to horchateria since their original location. They have a great space, and decent selection. My daughter had the chocolate dipped croissant, their croissant had great flavor in the pastry itself. The chocolate is closer to a dark chocolate, so it had a nice balance of sweetness to it. I ordered the horchata frappe, great flavor. My partner had the choco frappe and added a shot of espresso since it's caffeine free, the espresso was smooth and strong so unfortunately lost some of the chocolate flavor since we changed their drink. But it was still really good. I mixed them together when we got through half and made chocolate horchata and that was good too Didn't try any other food offerings but probably will return to give the sandwhiches a shot, they sound really good
google avatar

Erika L.

Yelp
Cutest coffee spot. Their conchas are made fresh in the mornings - vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. I was surprised to discover that the strawberry was my favorite one. Their coffees are good but on the sweeter side. I usually just ask for half sweeten. They have a drive thru on the side, great when you're just picking up a dozen for that work meeting.

Yelp
I drive by here all the time and typically just keep on going. The building is easy to miss. I finally stopped in for breakfast and was very pleasantly surprised. I was surprised to see a pork belly burrito on the breakfast menu, but figured why not give it a try. The pork belly blew me away! Definitely hardy for breakfast but it was 10/10 flavor, texture, perfectly prepared. Not only was the meat everything, the Sonoran style flour tortilla was so soft and buttery, eggs, salsa were perfect as well. Ambiance was fun. Lots of Frida, Selena, lucha libre artwork throughout. Plenty of seating, tables and couches in the dining area. Service was good. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. I'll be stopping back in for dessert soon!

Yelp
Ample parking lot and located off the corner of Alondra Blvd and Paramount. Location has plentiful seating inside and an event space where they host pop up events. I came here for their pet pop up. There is also a drive thru but did not use on my visit. You order at the counter and they call your number to collect items. They do get busy but staff is friendly! They have a great selection of coffees and drink on their menu, including selection of pastries and desserts. I opted for the Oaxacan Horchata which I had never tasted before, it wasn't overly sweet and enjoyed the coconut, fruit and nut inside. The chocolate dessert, I enjoyed the cream topping with semi sweet chocolate paired well. The cake was soft and the strawberry filling didn't have that artificial taste which is +++. Birote Deli is apparently a new collaboration. I had the Pollo Birote, the chicken was marinated to perfection. Tender and juicy with a slight kick in the end. The birote itself held everything together well. At first glance you'd think it'd going to be hard but on the contrary it's perfect which with the juiciness of the torta contents held up without making a mess. The bread is fresh and the best part is the toasty outside edges. Friend ordered the birria dip and it comes with the consomé on the side. The birria I tasted and I enjoyed the Smokey flavor. If it wasn't too far from me I'd be enjoying more birotes. Definitely worth trying their other birote options.

Yelp
Came in here for the first time and was so disappointed. I bought overpriced coffee that wasn't even fresh and a stale pastry. I wanted to support a small business I saw on IG but regret it.
google avatar

Danielle K.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place to us and i was skeptical until i saw their breakfast items! Not only do they have a huge selection of delicious pastries, they have breakfast burritos and sandwiches. I got the pork belly burrito - it was huge - and the woman behind the counter recognized i was a tater tot lover and offered me more. It is a good sized space with art on the walls and cute merch to buy. Open, fresh, well lit. Everyone is very nice and they made my husband's burrito a bowl since he cant have a tortilla. In both burritos there were HUGE chunks of pork belly, meat not fat. Tater tots and egg. The pork was marinated. My husband and i were amazed. The salsa was fresh and flavorful as well. Cant wait to bring my parents back!! The drinks are very tasty too

Yelp
Always a great product! Kids love stopping by here before we make our road trip back to the Bay Area!
google avatar

Lezlie W.

Yelp
If I could do a negative rating I would! - coffee was cold - waiting way to long in the drive thru lane - tasted HORRIBLE AND OLD That is so disappointing we are better off going to McDonalds for coffee! I also got a horchata iced coffee and it doesn't even have any horchata flavor to it! What a waste of money. FIRST AND LAST TIME GOING

Rob B.

Yelp
Was told this place was good so I was willing to try because the gang wanted churros. Unfortunately I received unfriendly service from a female worker. But I drove a distance to check it out and ordered anyway. The horchata tasted chalky, the cafe de olla seemed watered down (not an expert but I didn't imagine for it to taste weak), conchas were dry AF, and churros tasted stale. Even drowning the churros in ice cream & all the toppings couldn't mask that fact it wasn't fresh. Cool decor, large space but gonna be a one & done for me.
google avatar

Juana C.

Yelp
Been coming to HRL since their previous location. Love that they carry cute little items, love their art, and the atmosphere. This is a place I go to if im looking for something SWEET! The drinks are very sweet and ofc their pastries. But still visit for a sweet treat.
google avatar

Aunje M.

Yelp
This place is HUGE! Pretty chill on the day I visited. There was no long line out the door and there was plenty seating. I ordered the horchata latte and mini churros. Great place to work! Can't speak for when it's crowds but I spent 4 uninterrupted and productive hours here.
google avatar

Anthony F.

Yelp
The location and vibe were welcoming. The menu had many choices and our the service was great. Our churro ice cream was taking long to serve and after 15 minutes, they advised the churro machine was not working. Without asking, they refunded our full order and comped some additional items. They went above and beyond. It was our first time there and we plan to return because of the great service. Shout out to the team that was working Saturday afternoon (8/31/24).. Great job!!
google avatar

Marisol S.

Yelp
Super sad to leave a low rating but this place is definitely overhyped on Instagram. Went today and ordered their Iced Horchata latte, I had high expectations because of how they market themselves on social media. My drink literally tasted nothing like horchata but rather burnt espresso. Idk if they were just in a rush and didnt care for their drink quality but it was very disappointing. For a drink to be $6-7 the taste should be up to par. As for the establishment, it was cute and very spacious. However, the women's bathroom was out of toilet paper & had no soap. Made me think how do the employees wash their hands after using the bathroom and handling food.
google avatar

Carlos U.

Yelp
Very disappointed with this place! I don't know what happened, but the quality of their drinks are really bad now! This was supposed to be a cafe de olla with a splash of milk... it was literally water and milk. It used to be my favorite place for a cafe de olla. Never again coming back here!
google avatar

Ricardo M.

Yelp
Atmosphere is super chill and has some amazing art work to please the eyes however, the real surprise is their food additions. Sure they've got a great coffee selection, but don't pass up their breakfast options. They've got a wide selection of Mexican favorites from breakfast sandwiches to ribeye chilaquiles and everything in between. Don't get me started on the dessert options! Come by for some good food when you're in the area... you... will... not... be... disappointed
google avatar

Zeeshan Q.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the Horchata frappe from Horchataria Rio Luna. It was a nice blend of cinnamon with a hint of coffee flavor with each sip. The interior is also very spacious, and has many food and drink options. It's a great place to chill with some friends or get some studying in. Recommend checking them out if you're in the area!
google avatar

Yara G.

Yelp
Absolutely love their cafe de olla frapp! Staff is friendly & very knowledgeable on their offerings. Love their decorated walls, & service there is usually pretty quick!
google avatar

Marliz G.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying the view was amazing. I will always drive for food. But honestly when you get a view sometimes the food isn't that great. Now I'm not saying the food was bad, because it wasn't. But I've had better. The service was prompt. Parking was kind of a pain because there wasn't anywhere to park. Since it was so full. But again, this is just my opinion, not saying don't go try it. I do recommend the experience and I do recommend you try it. I probably got something I didn't particularly find fascinating.

Yelp

Yelp
Damn this place is lit! lol.. My friends and I went here for dessert and wow oh boy it is pretty good. The ambiance is huge and reminds me of a hallmark from the inside, which has bunch of books and miscelenous for sale. The fagrance smells good that reminds of a coffee/ chocolate aroma. It was just good to sit in here and enjoy some ice cold drink and desserts. The customer service is great and workers greeted us with a big smile. Speaking of desserts... I didn't ordered their horchata, which I should maybe in the near future for sure :P I ordered their Mazapan and Gansito Concha for to-go since my girlfriend loves mexian desserts. And yea I bit on it on the way home lol.. It was amazing and one of the most flavorful concha (Mexican Donut) I ever had. It was creamy and crispy/ flaky from the outside, which biting it is such a treat alone. Overall, I'm going to bring my girl here.. I know she'll love it :)

Edgar A.

Yelp
Churros are decent and horchata is okay, guy at the drive thru was rude and immature will probably not go back since a new place that sells the same things just opened up down the street, lost my business
google avatar

Tunisia M.

Yelp
Came here on a hot summer afternoon needing a change of scenery, wanting to go to an artist popup and wanting to see the coffee and churro cafe I've been following for years. Saw the Hello Kitty Artist popup and swigged on a matcha horchata frappe. It was solid, though I wished I thought to get some churros too. They sell breakfast now also. Overall, it's a smooth spot in a city I used to work in. Cheers!
google avatar

Monic T.

Yelp
I been passing by for a few months by now, today was the day. Big disappointment even though you see a lot videos on instagram about this place, for rush hour or lunch hour there was no customers. Their bread displays almost empty. I ordered a birote with barbecue and an agua de horchata, i pay almost $21.00 that now days is pretty much what you pay for a meal. The birote was super small and no flavor. The horchata tastes like sugary water. Is a big restaurant with lots of pictures, drawings and miscellaneous to sell but overall I'm not buying it. Maybe is still work in progress but definitely I don't see myself coming back.

Jen A.

Yelp
Coffee is really good news to come back another day! Staff was friendly and place was clean.

Giselle V.

Yelp
Haven't tried anything else on the menu but the horchata Iced coffee is gonna be a no from me dawg

Yelp
Walking in the Ambience is really nice and calm smells amazing the concha ice cream sandwich is unique and really worth it to get and for drink the horchata latte is really nice as well if you have a sweet tooth you'll enjoy this place! Everything also comes out pretty quick.
