The Best Restaurants in Baton Rouge | Eater New Orleans

"Birria is more than a trend at this hole-in-the-wall spot in Baton Rouge, it’s a staple. Located near Home Depot, Birria & Barbacoa serves some of the very best tacos in town, without the gimmicks but with all the warmth. The quesabirria special is the standard here, consisting of four shredded beef and cheese tacos topped with fresh cilantro and diced onion on fried corn tortillas and served with two salsas and a cup of warm consomé." - Clair Lorell

Google
Loved the Birria tacos 6 for $22 is not bad; served with consume and salsas! Those are easily the best thing on the menu. Got a steak taco and it was alright, but way smaller and less meat. Only downside it’s a food truck. When the restaurant comes back, I will literally be a regular. Imagine some chips and salsa and flipping large queso = absolutely bussin’.

Google
super hot fire tacos. they do something and do it very well. the Birria blew my face off. I didn't know that the tacos by themselves don't come with gravy so I'll order that specifically next time. the salsa are incredible. truly amazing and incredible. if you can't handle spicy approach with caution. that was one of my top tacos ever. I've had at thousands of tacos

Google
This place is awesome!! The best birria tacos in the Baton Rouge area. They are temporarily located at 12616 Airline Hwy operating out of a food truck. It’s still great and you don’t want to miss out.

Google
This was my first time trying birria tacos and I was very pleasantly surprised! They were really good and prepared very fresh. I also ordered a goat taco and cow tongue taco. They were very tender and delicious as well! The service was great, the food was fresh, the sauces were fresh and added such a nice flavor to the tacos. The food was was very reasonably priced, I paid about $23 for six nice sized tacos. The birria broth was good, but it was my least favorite of the three sauces that were served to me. The green sauce was my absolute favorite because it has a peppery kick to it that I enjoyed. Overall, this was a really good find and I'll definitely be back again!

Google
Abso-frickin-lutely delicious birria tacos! Friendly, fast service. Always served up fresh. Pro-tip: order the 6 taco birria plate. A+++

Google
I stopped in for lunch and I'm so glad I did. The server at the counter was very nice and helpful in trying to figure out what to order. I was able to wait outside for my food and went back to pick it up. The birria tacos were so good. They come four or six, so I got four. They were so tasty and filling. It comes with a spicy sauce and a guacamole sauce and a lime with a side of birria sauce for dipping. My goodness it was so good. I will most definitely be back.

Google
Goat spoiler: Looking for a hole-in-the-wall place for some authentic Hispanic food then look no further. I split the Birria de Chivo (goat soup) and an order of street tacos with my wife. The tacos and sauces were amazing. The goat soup.. here's the deal. The soup was good, and certain parts of the meat were good, but... there were some sketchy meat things too. Testicles? Maybe. Weird fatty things, yes. I love to venture out of my bubble and try new things, but the goat soup proved to be too far out for me. Maybe if I grew up eating those things I could appreciate them more. But I did not, and some of the textures were more than I could stomach. However, the soup base and a lot of the ingredients were really good. It's just the unknown meaty stuff that did me in. I would definitely get the tacos again though. Well worth the wait.

Google
I do love some local flavor and this place has it. Found it on a road trip to FL on a fuel stop. So glad I was able to savor their fantastic tacos. Probably not my healthiest decision, but you gotta do it now and then. The tacos had incredible flavor. The service was great and easy in and out. Two thumbs up.

Yelp
This establishment has been on my to do list for entirely too long. We went to their food truck today for lunch. We got the quesabirria tacos and my mind was blown. I'm low key upset with myself that it took this long and I have missed out on enjoying these tacos. This is a must go!
google avatar

Genesis M.

Yelp
They moved to a food truck in front of floor and decor. Service was good they gave a buzzer so you can sit in your car and wait.

Alexander A.

Yelp
The birria taco special is my favorite thing to get...so good! However, way too expensive for a taco truck. $17.50 before tax is what you'll pay for your meal.
google avatar

Bradley A.

Yelp
Birria is back in the area (after a kitchen fire closed the place near Home Depot on Coursey)!!! And so glad. The quesobirria tacos are GREAT. Haven't tried anything else because this is too good to risk it. Can't get much better.
google avatar

Navin A.

Yelp
Food was good but my birria tacos were on the oily side and the goat tacos were not my favorite. You can tell the goat meat was not of the quality we are used to. Service was slow but they were operating from a food truck in a parking lot so it was expected.

Barry E.

Yelp
Only Peruvian restaurant I know of in town. I've dined there twice now and throughly enjoyed the experience both times. Staff is always friendly and fast, food is consistently hot and delicious. I had a sliced steak dish with peppers, French Fries, and a very delicious gravy. The best Tres' Leche cake in Baton Rouge, period. Give them a try you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Yummmmm! This place has great birria! Not too spicy either! Yum I can't wait to get some more!

Yelp
Wow - love this place. We enjoyed dining in, food made quickly. Birria is so amazing, from the tacos to consome, everything was spot on. We ended up placing an initial order and ordering again and nearly a second time because we couldn't help ourselves. Queso birria special $12 for 4 tacos, amazing. Comparable to the top spots I've had in NY and TN, this tops them all at a fair price and amazing service. This is one of the best experiences we had in Baton Rouge
google avatar

Cess B.

Yelp
Food truck was located in the Mattress firm parking lot off Airline Hwy and had plenty of parking. We got 4 well-seasoned but small steak street tacos for $13 and some change (green/red sauce and radish and lime on the side), and the tortillas weren't turned on the griddle/cooked like we prefer. Also wish they had sides (like elote, beans and rice, etc.) and more garnish for the tacos instead of just onion and cilantro(lettuce, sour cream, diced tomatoes, etc.)to add flavor/variety. Overall, it was good.
google avatar

Quynh D.

Yelp
love this place for a birria craving! we always get the same thing which is the queso birria special, they fill it up with cheese and tons of meat! i love that it's made to order and the service is what you expect from a busy place. there are options to sit inside and outside the restaurant.

Yelp
Heard about this place's main building catching fire and they're operating out of a food truck temporarily. Gave them a try to support them and I didn't regret it. This stuff was amazing, ordered it and took it home so ignore the plate. Nice chef who took my order and the food was bangin'. See ya next taco Tuesday!

Yelp
I'm happy I found this place. I could eat here everyday and be happy!!! The staff is friendly and attentive. The restaurant feels very welcoming and homely and the music is a vibe it kinda transports you to Mexico. The tacos!!!! They are amazing. If you are reading this just go!!!! You won't be disappointed!!!!

Yelp
Attention - Please see edit below I dont usually post reviews but since they caught fire sometime in April i believe, they've been out of business. Their facebook page indicated that they managed to set up a temporary food truck in Gonzales at: 12616 airline hwy gonzales la 70737 (outdated address) They are now open from 11 AM to 8 PM from Tuesday to Sunday. I usually get tacos every Wednesday and Saturday for lunch religiously. Due to how dang delicious their Quesabirria Tacos are. Since they open later for this period of time, i am able to get a visit in on their first reopening albeit at that temporary location. I was worried that the flavor would be different but when i came over right from work, the cashier lady immediately remembered me and knew what i wanted. The 6 Quesabirria Combo. Which is just Six quesabirria tacos, a quarter of a lime, one small plastic container of two different salsa. One the classic spicy avocado salsa and another a mild and slightly smokey red salsa. I usually get it with onions and cilantro which she asks and make sure if you want those toppings. There is also a side of grilled onions included which i dont normally eat because i like it as is. Then there is their gentle yet flavorful Consomme dipping soup included. (this is 21.90 for six tacos + Consomme , i don't remember what their normal 4 combo costs, but the prices are the same as previously so you can still refer to the old menu prices). So, after a ~20 minute drive back to baton rouge, the tacos were still crunchy and warm. And the Consomme dipping soup is still warm as well which made me happy because i do keep my car extremely cold at 68 degrees. It looks and smells the same. The texture is exactly how i remember and flavor as well. I am pretty sure i shed one tear. in my right eye. Very tiny though since its just food but. Gosh. I did miss them. This is the best Birria Tacos in Louisiana i've tasted so far. The only one that rivals this place is Taqueria El Mundo in Houma, Louisiana. And this still beats them for the gentler, not-as-salty flavor and crunchy texture as well. Please go to their temporary location in Gonzales if you want to try it. You won't regret it! 12616 airline hwy gonzales la 70737 (outdated address: see Edit 1) Open from 11 AM to 8 PM from Tuesday to Sunday. (outdated time: see edit 1) Edit 1: They have moved their food truck back into Baton Rouge! I have updated this review to take into account that. New address is: 9696 Airline Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70815 New Times: Tues-Sat - 11AM to 6pm/ Sun - 11AM - 5PM I will visit today and update with photos of what it currently looks like.

Yelp
When I tell you these are the best birria tacos in BR, they don't miss!!! Food truck is on Airline hwy in mattress firm parking lot until they get back into their building. Had them today and my gf confirmed how good they are!!!! Give them a try! Food is always hot!

Yelp
Was in Baton Rouge for work, and of course enjoyed lots of yummy seafood, Creole and cajun but I had been wanting to try Birria tacos and something told me this place would be worth the try! My intuition was right! Now I've been craving them ever since! The stars are for the tacos, the service was subpar, and definitely did not match the southern hospitality I had been receiving while in town, but glad the tacos were a hit!
google avatar

Yelp
Best. Tacos. Ever. I have only tried one dish so far, and it's a must-have: The quesabirria special, which consists of four generously portioned shredded beef and melted cheese tacos (topped with fresh cilantro and diced onion on a delicately fried corn tortilla) served with two salsas + a cup of warm consomé for dipping (the flavor-packed broth the meat is slowly cooked in). I have never had such juicy and tender beef before. It was all very flavorful, filling, and fresh. Apparently the tortillas are homemade, too! It's very savory and rich, so I highly recommend eating the tacos with the tangy salsas to balance off the flavors. Friendly and fast service! Can't wait to try more!! I've been telling everyone about this place. Each friend I have brought has absolutely loved it.

Thess V.

Yelp
Everything on both plates was awesome. Im addicted and coming back again today. Awesome
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
Truly amazing food. The birria tacos are phenomenal. The beef broth that comes with it is awesome. So much flavor. Our friends were literally drinking the broth after the meal. How have I lived here 3 years and nobody told me about it?! BR folks, get on over to Birria asap. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Tori C.

Yelp
#TikTokmademetryit! A hole in the wall treasure that I've been dying to try for the past two years and I've finally caved! I impulsively brought a friend and after trying to call an order in, we took a trip over. We ordered the birria special: 4 tacos, two sauces, and consommé for only twelve bucks! It was good and true to other reviewers on Yelp. It was so delicious to eat at the park and I'll DEFINITELY be returning!
google avatar

Danny S K.

Yelp
Birria Special was great as always but Birria De Chivo? That was little too much for me on both taste and price. Next time I'm trying beef instead. Please make menudo on weekends!
google avatar

Lyle S.

Yelp
So good. Birria tacos are the hot thing right now and I was surprised to find that BR has a lot of places that serve it. Since this place has it right in the name, we went there. Small hole in the wall type place. Small menu. Authentic and delicious. Birria is the perfect cold weather taco. Go try it...now!
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
I agree with another recent review... skip the beans and rice. Fill up on the tacos. Pull pork, chicken and shrimp tacos are all flavorful. The quesobirria special is AMAZING!! It comes with four tacos and consome. Great customer service. Our waitress explained the menu really well. Plenty of seating. Lots of clients with takeout orders. If Birria is what you're craving, this is the place!
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
Stopped in from out of town and saw this place. Holy shit! It's incredible. Had 4 tacos and I'm beyond stuffed. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Alexandra G.

Yelp
Yoooooooooo these Taco's are FIRE!!!! Some of the BEST I have ever had. Fresh ingredients, flavorful, tender meat and some reallllllly stringy cheezy goodness hidden at the bottom of it all. I legit have never had tacos like this. You need to order the QUESABIRRA Taco's. They're the ones that have all the cheese at the bottom. Make sure that you allow enough time to pick up your food. I went into the restaurant on my lunch break and ordered from the counter. It took about 25 mins for my food to come out. It's totally worth the wait though!!!
google avatar

Hong-an T.

Yelp
I LOVE this place! I cannot recommend it more! I went with my partner and they ordered the Birria and broth combo which was around $15 and I ordered 2 steak tacos which were around $3 each. The tacos are STUFFED! It has flavorful meat and filled with cheese and cilantro. The service is extremely friendly and very quick! We sat down and finished eating in a matter of 30 minutes. The food came out hot and fresh. The restaurant is small and intimate.
google avatar

Jonathan T.

Yelp
The birria hype is real. Great flavors. Has the hole in the wall feel but worth it. Service is look. I ordered take out but i watched waitress/host accommodate those who ate there well. Will be back.
google avatar

Raven J.

Yelp
The birria taco special is a hearty and tasty option if you like bbq beef. The broth and salsas it comes with have great flavor, but it does make for a particularly messy taco situation. This is the "must try" menu! The chorizo burrito was not for me. The flavor of the chorizo was weirdly artificial compared to the birria meat. The texture was a little too mushy for me. I love that they also have an ice cream freezer for dessert options.
google avatar

Jaime T.

Yelp
Food was great. We beat the crowd we didn't know was on the way in. We sat inside to eat. Finished up and asked for ticket and they said pay at counter which had a line out the door literally. Wish i had tried them sooner because i'll be back really soon. Definitely want to try more items.
google avatar

Christon C.

Yelp
I really like the Birrah here, the broth could be a little more thicker a little lessy oily, otherwise the tacos are great!!! The service is fast and efficient your order doesnt take long at all and its always hot.
google avatar

Erin R.

Yelp
I ordered the Quesabirria special sin cilantro to-go. It came with 4 birras tacos that were nice & crispy on the outside with meat & gooey melted cheese on the inside. The roja & verde sauces were good. I didn't get much flavor from the consomé but I still enjoyed dipping my birrias in it. The 4 birrias enough to split btwn my husband and I. The service was fast and friendly. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Joni G.

Yelp
My favorite taco place in Baton Rouge! This place will become a regular on your places to eat once you try the quesabirra tacos on their menu. Quesabirra, if you are not familiar with the dish, are shredded beef, tortilla style tacos with melted cheese, which are topped with diced onions and cilantro for garnish, served with a side of consommé for dipping. It can also be described as a cross between tacos and quesadillas. The quesabirra is their "special" which is offered everyday, so no need to worry about frequenting this restaurant on a specific day to try them. The staff are very friendly, so take advantage and dine in if you choose, but keep in mind there is limited seating. Hope you enjoy this place as much as I do.
google avatar

Sebrina B.

Yelp
I truly don't have anything new to add. This food was so delicious. I ordered the birri special and two tacos before I arrived. Even with the 30-40 minutes that passed before I arrived there was another 10-15 minute wait because it was lunchtime and there were a number of orders arriving to pickup at the same time. Next time I may try and put in my order at two or something like that. I think this place is carried by the flavoring and tenderness of the various meets. I do caution that both the red and the guac/green chile sauces are spicy. Red is more smokey adobe flavored while the other is as described.
google avatar

Breaynn T.

Yelp
Second time coming to Birria tacos and we were not disappointed! This time we sat down and ordered food to eat there. We got great service and the food came out very fast. The tacos were absolutely delicious! Definitely try these tacos out if you're in Baton Rouge area.

P Dianne H.

Yelp
Food and the service is amazing. Fast service but food was not missed. Reminds me of being in Texas food is really authentic
google avatar

Emmeline D.

Yelp
I have been sick for 3 days and all I wanted was quesobirria tacos. These did not miss. I mean it was magic at making me feel better. Beans and rice added were perfect. They were great. Joanna was very attentive and nice. The seats and area were clean and well kept. Would eat here again.

Yelp
When I say I've been excited to try this place for over a year, I'm not kidding. For whatever reason, I couldn't get it together. But in the December of firsts in 2021, I FINALLY checked this one off of my bookmark list. I walked in at about 1:00 on a Saturday and this place was POPPIN. Every table full and a steady line of to go orders. It's not big, so I would suggest calling ahead if you are not dining in. They also only had one waitress who was doing dine in and to go, so be ready to wait a bit. That being said, when I placed my order, she said 20 minutes and it was not a minute more. As I scrolled through my Instagram waiting for my quesobirria sampler and more, the anticipation grew with every smell and every plate that walked out of the kitchen. By the time I got home, through the Christmas traffic, I was ready to rip the bag open. I was NOT disappointed. The lengua taco was one of the best, if not the best, I've ever had. The perfect texture and flavor, I was left wishing I ordered more. The side of rice and beans I ordered were traditional, but also pretty tasty. Without any further adieu, the quesobirria was epic. The shells were crispy, cheesy, beefy - simple but so rich and exactly what a guilty pleasure should taste like, sans any guilt. Then, you dip it in the beautiful birria broth and it's heaven. I didn't want to stop eating it but I did, to save one for the morning. I'm not embarrassed to say, I was so excited to have one left, I ate it cold dipped in the hot broth and it was so incredibly satisfying. I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Chad M.

Yelp
Ok I have been around a minute, I have had and enjoyed incredible food all over the world This place gave me the absolute BEST TACOs I have ever had Please go try!!!!
google avatar

Joe W.

Yelp
The food is absolutely amazing, I eat here all the time. I usually get the same thing most of the time but I've had quesadillas, burritos, and tacos and usually have a hard time figuring out which one I want every time. The tacos are usually my go-too if all others fail. I don't have any pictures because I always lose myself when I get the food. It usually never makes it home either if I get it to-go/carry out. The service is excellent, wait staff are nice, courteous, and seem pretty happy, never looking for a tip, but always leave a big tip based on my experience. The restaurant itself isn't the most aesthetically appealing, and the menus need to be updated, the food makes up for it by far. It's always busy, up until closing time. My only wish is, I wish they had horchata! Birria Tacos
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall spot for outstanding food! You don't come here for great service. Plan on coming in, seeing a bit of chaos with a busy spot that is unorganized and short staffed. But you come here for the QUESABIRRIA TACOS!!! That is what EVERYONE IS ORDERING!!! They have a special that comes with 4 (I could have eaten 6). Think street tacos with a twist. Shredded beef and cheese and the tortilla is fried so it is crispy. Their homemade red and green sauces are amazing! I will be back!!!

Taylor W.

Yelp
We went to the food truck location and got the quesabirria special. It was delicious!
google avatar

Sash T.

Yelp
Best Birria in town. Fast service, always a win every time we go. Make sure you are careful when ordering though bc one the waitress got our order wrong and we had to pay for the mistake
google avatar

Peyton F.

Yelp
The food here is so good, I always get mine with extra cheese. My only complaint would be I wish that their soup for the tacos had a little bit more flavor but they still have the best offer in Baton Rouge(trust me I have tried).
google avatar

Angelica G.

Yelp
Birria Birria !!!! If you want tacos these days birria is the way to order them. Yes it's been the craze since 2020 but it's still going strong. This little hole in the wall place was the only place in Baton Rouge that I found had them. Also if it's authentic you want then this is the place. I also ordered a torta which is a Mexican sandwich. I for the steak torta hold the radishes. For the lil' kiddo I ordered a plain carne asada on flour tortilla- all tacos come with chopped up onions, cilantro and salsa. Oh and speaking of salsa the green one is the hottest most spiciest one versus the red one that has a tomato base. As I am Hispanic it has always been that the green salsa has always been the hottest spicier makes your nose run and can give you a slight cough or a tickle in your throat but it's the one that you want to keep eating and cannot stop eating for some reason and then all of a sudden your mouth is numb but it is the best one in my opinion versus the red one that has a more mild spice to it and you can tolerate it more and it does not burn your mouth as much but either one that you pick they are both good and if you are a wild card I would say mix the two together burn your mouth but it will make the food taste really good and add some more flavor and spices to your tacos or anything that you order from the restaurant. The inside is small so if it's lunch time I would go early to get a table or you can do pick up which was most convenient for most people. Either way don't skip trying this place out
google avatar

Trikarri B.

Yelp
So I had a spa appointment yesterday and on the way back decided to try this place I kept hearing about that serves good quesabirria! I'd been a little disappointed by the lack of flavor tried at previous places so when I saw that this place was in a little strip mall off of a frontage road, I knew this could be it! Birria & Barbacoa de Chivos los Compadres is tucked away on a little strip near Airline Hwy. The place is small, with a few booths and tables (no more than seating for 20 for sure) but the food they're cranking out is major! They were packed wall to wall and there was a bit of a wait (about 25 minutes) but I'm glad I did! I got the quesabirria special! Four quesabirria tacos (light on the onions) a cup of consomé, two lime wedges, tomatillo salsa and fire roasted salsa. This was heaven! I will definitely be back to try the other options.

caleb h.

Yelp
Best tacos and birria in br easily. Easy to get In and out. I wish they had beer but it doesn't diminish the food. True 5 star food. Genuine street taco
google avatar

Paige N.

Yelp
Definitely a hole in the wall place. I can't find birria tacos anywhere so tried this place out. AMAZING. I'm drooling just thinking about the tacos Real Mexican food
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
Finally got to check out the hype, and boy did it meet my expectations. The quesabirria tacos taste like a fusion of a quesadilla and a taco asada. They were out of the consommé but I was most interested in trying the tacos. Perfectly cooked tacos, bursting with flavor and the twist of lime took it to another level. The red and green sauces were also delicious additions and helped to change up the flavor with each bite. I also got to try the chicken burrito and it was scrumptious. It was huge and loaded with delicious ingredients, including avocado. I was so excited to dig in I forgot to stop for pictures. Final verdict? This place could be dangerous for my wallet. I will definitely be back.

Greg B.

Yelp
So delish! Great little place. Delicious food. Good prices. Friendly service. Not to be missed if you want something really delicious.

Yelp
Expect moderately long wait times at peak hours but it's well worth the wait. The food is hot and fresh and delicious. Drink selections were very limited. The server was very sweet albeit very busy so try to ask for everything at once if at all possible.
