Where to Eat in Pacific Beach

"San Diego’s birria boom includes this popular Turquoise Street shop that specializes in beef birria as well as lamb birria on top of a broader menu that features street tacos and burritos. Besides birria plates, the stewed meat features in trendy dishes like birria pizza, birria ramen, and quesabirria." - Candice Woo, Grace Cassidy

SO GOOD & AUTHENTIC! The chilaquiles and birria tacos were so flavorful and delicious! I was only in SD for a few days but this will be my new stop when I'm back 😋☀️🍴

Ana Reyes Sanchez

Google
Birria was good, if a bit dry. The portions are very generous, fitting the price. We got three dishes with birria and an order of chilaquiles! Their churros are also good, but needed some more sugar imo.

Google
No need to drive to Mexico or anywhere else in San Diego when you can get authentic Birrieria here. These birria tacos are both tender and succulent thanks to the slow-cooked consume that they serve you. I ordered the lamb and beef and the lamb should be your 1st try. It's tasty! Also their Al Pastor mini tacos where needed to finish up on the awesome broth. Worth the drive here any day!

Google
Best Birria tacos in SD. The lamb was phenomenal with flavor. Will be coming back!

Google
People are really sleeping on Birrieria La Huasteca. I’m not a big birria person, so my go to is the chorizo Gordita and carnitas tacos, both with some salsa macha. It’s some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had.

Nes Borne

Google
First time trying a Birria, was good. Tried the tacos too and it was well prepared and tasty. Their chips was also freshly prepared.

Pat Gleason

Google
Some of the best birrieria tacos I've had. Very chill place. A good serving size and excellent flavors. Don't sleep on the rice and beans, they are outstanding.

Google
The Birria tacos are phenomenal, best I’ve ever had! The chili oil though is what makes this place out of this world, it’s insanely delicious, perfect heat with delicious flavors. The prices are super fare, beautiful little restaurant! Truly loved this place so much!

Yelp
we chose this restaurant based on location, cost, and previous reviews. we were not disappointed!! the employee who helped us was so patient and so friendly. she was very accommodating with our order (and all our questions). the quesabirria was outstanding. the Birria plate exceeded expectations. I've never had a better wet burrito (and that green salsa.... we used all the extra cups she provided). it's just a little place. very unassuming. so worth it. my teens give it five big booms.

Yelp
Loved the fish tacos! These are huge tacos not street tacos. They did not disappoint! We ended up ordering one Burria taco as that is what they are known for. The dip way super good, the taco was not my favorite when compared tot he fish taco though!

Yelp
Great food to hit our birria craving! The elote was a great starter (really sweet corn with savory toppings). I got the birria ramen (lamb because why not, next time I'll try the beef), and hubby got the mole rojo (spicier one, comes with chicken and rice), very satisified, wish they had a liquor license so we could enjoy it with a margarita, but easy counter ordering and nice outdoor seating.

Yelp
My husband was craving a quesabirria on New Year's Eve and luckily, we stumbled upon this gem! This place's birria is SO good. Everything came out hot and fast but nonetheless fresh and delicious which is something I value a lot. I do not know of a better spot in the area if you're craving Mexican food/ birria and looking for that authentic taste and feel. The manager/owner was extremely welcoming and very professional. The seating outside was amazing at night time because even though there was a brisk breeze, the heating post was at the perfect distance and temperature. What a treat it was to eat at this establishment I highly recommend it. Thank you for the delicious food.

Yelp
This place just moved to the top of my list of favorite Mexican spot in PB. Holy shiiit I wish my stomach was bigger so I could eat 800 of these. Already can't wait to come back. 10/10 recommend. If you don't try this place you're missing out. & the staff is epic.

Yelp
Incredible Lamb Birria and wonderful hospitality! Overall great atmosphere and experience

Yelp
Service was great but the food was eh. The birria (lamb and beef) lacked flavor. Rice and beans were spot on which is usually a good indication of a good Mexican restaurant but in this case the birria was mediocre. Dining room was clean and chill ambiance. This is not a place I would go back for birria but would go back to try other dishes.

Yelp
Huge portion and amazing flavor. We were greeted by a friendly staff member, awesome customer service. They have indoor and outdoor seating, restaurant is also walking distance from the beach. We had the flour quesabirria and birria ramen. If you are looking for tasty birria dishes, check this place out! Side Note: Parking can be a challenge but worth stopping by!

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place as I was craving a good burrito and birria taco. Sadly, I was let down because the meat had no flavor and the salas were bland. The food was piping hot and fresh, but sadly I did not enjoy it because it was tasteless. Friendly customer service though

Yelp
I ordered the birria ramen and it was fantastic! It had to much flavor and the noodles were cooked just right. The inside of the shop is super cute. Though not a ton of parking it's not really their fault, that's just La Jolla for you. They were quick and friendly when taking order and delivering the food. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
If you're surfing all day down the street, and you are not stopping here on the way home. You're doing it wrong. Trust me when I say you need to stop and try this spot out. Been here twice now in two days. Both times have been perfect. See you guys tomorrow for the Pozole.

Yelp
Probably our favorite birria spot in San Diego. It's been quite a while since we've been back (looks like the prices have risen exponentially) but the lamb birria pack was incredible when we tried it and we have yet to find a local birria spot that has impressed us as much.

Yelp
Great Lamb Birria. Don't miss out. Easy to find. The street tacos are good too. Check it out

Yelp
Great place for birria and burritos! Not so much for their regular tacos. We got the quesobirria with beef, two asada tacos, al pastor California burrito, tres leches, and horchata. The birria really lives up to its name--SO soft and juicy and flavorful! I wish I tried the lamb from what the other reviews say. The consommé was also not too salty, which I really appreciate. The burrito was also very solid, every bite was just bursting with flavor. We ordered the tacos because we thought we might still be hungry, but definitely didn't need them. They were pretty average tacos I'd say, made with what looked like store-bought tortillas, so I'd recommend either getting the birria tacos or just opting for something else. The tres leches and horchata were also very good, no complaints there. The interior was also very clean and spacious, I really appreciate there being a bathroom so I could wash my hands afterwards. Wish it was a bit more central in location but overall a great spot!

Yelp
Oh man. These quesabirria Tacos are sooooooo good. Go with the lamb. 5 big stars!!!

Yelp
Ugh. SO. GOOD. Stopped here on a whim with my partner because we were craving Birria Tacos and the location looked very inviting, with lots of people dining at the tables outside. The staff was so pleasant and the chef actually brought our tacos out himself, asking if he could bring us anything more to make the experience as great as possible. The food was presented beautifully and the tacos were quite full - you really get your money's worth here. Lot of flavor to the tacos and the consommé was similarly very tasty. Would highly recommend giving them a try if you're in the area and want to get some authentic birria. Great prices too.

Yelp
I tried their pozole this Thursday and it's been years that I find a restaurant that makes it like my Mom used to cook it. The broth was full of flavor & meat was tender. I'm coming back soon for more!

Yelp
A hidden gem in pacific beach! Probably one of the best birria taco spots in San Diego! My favorite spot is still El Viejon on convoy st. I definitely recommend the lamb quesabirria taco on corn tortilla! The prices were great and these tacos are HUGE. I think 1 taco is enough for me. 2 tacos would be perfect for sharing with someone. Some sauces on the side would elevate the taste of these tacos. Tried the birria ramen too which was pretty good! I would come back if I am ever in the area. Service was nice. They also don't have AC.

Yelp
Great food! Amazing service. Birria tacos are massive! Quesabirrias on point! The consomé completes the craving. Jamaica was perfect. 10/10

Yelp
Amazing Lamb Birria tacos! They serve it with a wonderfully flavorful dipping sauce with chunks of extra lamb. The tacos also came served on extra thick freshly made corn tortillas, which I wouldn't have gone for usually but definitely loved it!! The Lamb Quesabirria was divine! Definitely recommend getting this!!! Can't wait to explore the rest of the menu! There have breakfast burritos and lots of fun things to try! The chef came out after to ask how we liked the food after! I love it when they do that! It makes it more personal in the best way!

Yelp
Godly food. Absolutely amazing. Everything on the menu is absolute fire and more. Anyone who likes real authentic mexican food come through. Absolute fire. Reminds me of the food back in mexico

Yelp
If I could give this place zero stars I definitely would, probably the worst experience i've ever had with a place off doordash. Yesterday my boss ordered me and my other coworker food from this place for lunch. I got the queso birrieria taco and they both got the birrieria ramen. Within 20minutes of eating the food, which honestly had no flavor and was not worth the money, we all started to feel sick. First we all felt queasy, then hot and the chills, then came the gagging and throwing up. My coworker was off soon after so she luckily made it home and got to throw up from the comfort of her home. Me and my boss were less fortunate and took turns throwing up in our work bathrooms and gagging on the store floor while having to deal with customers. We couldn't get our mouths to stop watering and it was so bad we had to close work early, with trash bags in hand for the drive for the drive home. That wasn't even the worst part, i've gotten food poisoning from places before, someone doesn't follow food safety or wash their hands, unfortunate, but it happens. My boss called them to inform them so they could look into it in the hopes of preventing anyone else from getting sick and hopefully get a refund. She called and asked to speak to a manager and was told she would have to call back the next day, but sense other people could also be currently throwing up and getting diarrhea from their food she insisted that a manager call her back today. Thirty minutes later she got a call from the most unprofessional and worst manager either of us have ever had the displeasure of having to deal with. My boss informed her that the food had made her and her staff sick and we had to close down early to go home. Instead of saying she would look into it and refund the money, she decided that arguing was the best route to take. She argued with my manager that they make their food fresh everyday and that we couldn't have gotten sick from their food. After informing the ridiculous manager that we in-fact did get sick, and did so in the bathrooms at our work, the manager asked for pictures. SHE ASKED FOR PICTURES OF OUR PUKE TO PROVE WE GOT SICK?? She also asked if we had gone to the doctor. And then again insisted we must have all gotten sick from something else and when was informed that the food from this place was the only food we had all eaten yesterday she then argued that we must all have the flu. I don't know about you but i don't share drinks or saliva with my coworkers or boss in any way to transmit the flu, and also the flu usually doesn't hit 3 people all within 10-15minutes of each other after all eating the same food. The manager said she would only refund the money after my boss, my coworker and I all went to our respective doctors and got doctors notes saying it was food poisoning. I work full time and am a full time student and don't exactly have to extra funds laying around to go to a dr's apt i wasn't planning for just for a restaurant to refund me money for something that got me sick. It was dehumanizing enough having to throw up in the bathrooms at work and drive home with a trash bag in my lap because i couldn't stop gagging but the treatment and response of the restaurant made it that much worse. Luckily doordash refunded my boss so I was at least able to get my money back. But if you dont like not throwing up at work and almost shitting your pants on the way home I suggest you avoid this place at all costs. Especially because management is not going to give a f*ck and gaslight you about the fact they got you sick. Food was mediocre, Management was appalling pathetic and clearly unequipped to deal with this situation, or probably any problem at all for that matter.

Yelp
I'm obsessed. I've only ordered for delivery, but they have become a monthly (or sometimes weekly) part of my routine. My go to order is one quesabirria taco with beef and one with lamb. They are each excellent I can't choose a favorite. Yesterday I was sharing with a friend and we also ordered a birria pizza- it's basically a massive birria quesadilla. I'll probably be ordering that next time- it was enough for two meals and a snack. I've tried their birria ramen- also good, but I think their tacos and pizza are the stars of the show here. Their menu also has a variety of other dishes- I think I even saw they have a breakfast menu. I'm going to have to go by to dine in soon, but until I make the trip they'll continue to be a favorite for delivery.

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic Eastern Mexican food, then this is the right place. Whether you are after barrias , tacos or burritos, they have it. We got the beef barria plate and a wet burrito. Both were delicious. The red and green sauces were spicy and flavorful. The service was friendly and quick. The outdoor dining patio was nice and there was indoor seating as well. We plan to return often.

Yelp
4/22/22 So close to the border, when asked what do you want to eat? I said Birria tacos without a 2 nd thought. Doc found this place immediately on Yelp which opened at 10 a.m. while others were closed til 11:30 or noon. It was about a 16 minute drive to Pacific Beach and worth the visit. Their menu is extensive. Craving Mexican food? Look no further. Even the family before us said Go Ahead cuz they couldn't decide. All three of us had a single Birria with additional cheese, a Horchata and a flan to share. The lady who brought our food outside(we had Grandpup with us) even brought out a bowl of water for our 4 legged family member with gushes of how precious she was. She checked on us several times during our meal and even offered us a green salsa if we wanted. She gave us the biggest smiles each time. She also offered to take our photo. The Birria tacos/ one bite and it was LOVE to ALL my senses. No shame I tucked a napkin under my shirt neckline cuz I KNEW I'd drip that savory dipping consommé big time. They gave a dish full of additional minced cilantro and onions - heaven. Like on auto/pilot: dip, soak a few seconds, bite, chew, swoon, repeat. My other two family members were done before me while I took my time enjoying every mouthful. At the end only hubs ate his share of the flan. Doc and I were so extremely stuffed, it's going home with us. The horchata was a first for hubs. We all enjoyed the refreshing drink with perfectly blended sweetness and notable cinnamon spice. Doc said this is the BEST Birria tacos she's ever had and ditto for me.

Yelp
Such a standout establishment. You have to stop by and support this business and these wonderful people who work here. Pros: -friendly service! -patio is pet friendly. Their staff even filled a bowl of water and brought it out for my dog -delicious food. The queso birria tacos were so tasty - portion sizes are generous Cons: -n/a Other: -street parking Great food and service. I definitely will be back!

Yelp
Super fast delivery, food is fresh out the kitchen hot. Focused menu on what they do best. The Birria ramen is delicious and way too much for a single portion so plenty for left overs!

Yelp
Perfect little spot with amazing Birrea. Loved everything we tried. Great tacos, nice little patio to enjoy your food on, great location.

Yelp
Immediately upon walking in I was greeted and received great customer service. I was late to the game and hadn't tried birria ramen yet, so I tried their beef birria ramen (they also have a lamb option). Honestly, the fusion is not for me. The beef and broth itself was really good, but the ramen noodles took away from the meal. It had nothing to do with how they prepared it, I think it's just something trendy. Lots of seating both inside & outside, and outdoor seating offers heat lamps as well. Definitely going to come back to try more items off their menu! Posole is next for sure.

Yelp
surf and turf burrito - below mid. the turf tasted like it was days old meat. so tuff and chewy. no flavor whatsoever. quesabirria- worse quesabirria I've ever had. it was so thick and more masa then cheese or meat. also had no flavor whatsoever. it came with rice and beans which were okay. street tacos- just like the surf and turf burrito the meat tasted old and chewy. jamaica agua fresca- it had a weird sour sparkling after taste. I asked if they added sprite or something different from the traditional agua fresca. maybe a spa water variation, my thoughts tried to justify. But staff confirmed no. I asked if I could switch for a different drink and opted for a fountain drink instead. salsa- if you like spicy flavorful salsa, as they should be. go elsewhere! you'll be disappointed here. both red and green salsas were not spicy at all not even a hint. they just tasted acidic. It's disrespectful calling them salsas they should call them what they serve acidic sauces. Overall very disappointing visit. You pay before eating, which is unfortunate because it was not worth the bill or tip. There are much better birria places in SD worth their price.

Yelp
Yum! Looking for street tacos, quesabirria tacos? This is the bomb! Right next to a good Italian coffee shop also. Coffee and tacos...breakfast of champions or hangovers. Haha!
google avatar

Yelp
We loved it! It was our first time in San Diego and we knew we had to stop by! We ordered the Quesabirria, Birria ramen, birria tacos, and street tacos. And it did not disappoint! If you are in the area this is a must-do!
google avatar

Yelp
The quesobirria taco was good, nothing extravagant but I enjoyed it. I felt like it was lacking flavor so I'm not in any rush to go back. I've had better but it was definitely good.
google avatar

Yelp
Si, muy bueno. I enjoyed a hand made gordita filled with beef birria with a side of rice and beans and some terrific salsas from this new Mexican Eatery. The gordita was a warm pocket of goodness. The masa was well prepared and tasted pretty good. I thought it could of used a little salt, but that something one add to it afterwards. The beef birria inside was plentiful and delicious. It was tender and well seasoned. It just tasted really good, and it tasted even better after dipping the the gordita into the mildly spicy beef broth or consommé. It was very tasty. Both the rice and beans were very good. The beans offered a very good and robust in flavor. I loved the rice. It had that very good loose texture and light tomato and garlic flavor. They make very good hot sauces and salsas here, and if you are looking for something really hot, ask for the Chile de Aciete. The family work and own this great eatery are super nice and welcoming.
google avatar

Kristie L.

Yelp
Get the quesa-birria! I'm debating going back later to get another one. Skip the breakfast burrito. I might try it one more time to see if 1) they get my order right, 2) the flavor is ok but I couldn't eat it because I asked for no beans and they left rice out instead and 3) the bacon was limp so maybe choose ham or chorizo instead. Birria is a different flavor than Fernandez more south of this location, but pretty good still. Super friendly! Parking is a little hard but feasible.

Yelp
The owners of this new taqueria have come down from Riverside to set up shop in a suite that has seen recent turnover in North PB. The parking situation is not ideal with no spaces available on-site. The next door neighbor to the west had some dedicated spots, but signs were posted stating that they were not to be used for other businesses. The inside still had several chairs and tables for dine-in seating to complement the outdoor front patio setup. The menu was a smorgasbord of items with a focus on beef and lamb birria. Those meats were offered in the form of a caldo (broth), pizza, plate, quesabirria, and ramen. I chose the last two for my to-go order with lamb for the cheese taco and beef for the noodles. The taco was served on a corn tortilla which was a dollar cheaper than the flour variety. This was one of the rare instances in which there was a price difference between the two types of tortillas. Most places usually ask if you want corn or flour and charge the same for either. A good amount of shredded lamb was stuffed inside a full-sized tortilla with melted cheddar cheese that had a burnt char to the edges. A cup of broth was provided as a dip for the taco. The ramen was served in a styrofoam container filled with broth. It was one of the better versions I had tasted because a large chunk of beef was submerged in the flavorful liquid. My experience with birria ramen had involved shredded beef added in small quantities to the noodles and soup. The breakfast choices and mole were other items that intrigued me, especially the latter as you won't find that at most of the taco shops in the PB area. My food took about ten minutes to be prepared and packaged in take-out vessels. It's convenient to now have a nearby birria option without having to drive a farther distance.

Yelp
Came in semi-early on a Friday night and service was super quick! The place was empty when we got there and only two or three people came in after that. Definitely on the pricey side for tacos but I personally thought the portion size matched the cost; the tacos were BEEFY. Got the lamb quesabirria and while I commonly think lamb can have an overwhelmingly gamey taste, this did not! We got takeout so I can't speak on the ambiance but would come back if I got the chance. Looks like they have both outdoor and indoor seating!
google avatar

Row M.

Yelp
This is a gem... a great find. The price of quesabirria is very cheap but the product is very delicious. I'll keep this place as one of my favorites in la Jolla. A must try if you choose this place is the Lamb Quesabirria.... the bomb. The menudo and chillaquilles have kick in them, it can wake you up and kick the hangover out of you, then after you finish the meal, you would want to crawl back in bed to give in to the food coma you incur.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been craving birria tacos and been wanting to try this spot for a while. Street parking is a little hard to find. Both indoor and outdoor seatings are available. I ordered 2 quesabirria tacos and it comes with consome. The size of the taco is huge!!! I would of been ok with one. The tortilla is very thick and they use 2 so there's melted cheese in btwn. Personally I don't like thick tortillas. It was a little soggy. Wish it was crispier. You can chose btwn beef and lamb meat. I got the beef. It was very bland. It needed more salt. The texture of the meat was soft and tender though. I wish there was some kind of heat in the meat. They offer red sauce which is more like tomato salsa than hot sauce and the green sauce was ok. Neither of them were spicy.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Food and service was incredible! Cannot recommend highly enough. The quesabirria taco is where it's at.

Yelp
Delicious Birrieria. Best I've had in San Diego. Cute patio with lights if you go after sunset. Perfect amount of food. So much flavor
google avatar

Yelp
Not sure what kind of coffee they serve but it was memorably delicious and the food was outstanding! Much of it was house-made and high quality (try the Chorizo!). They have an extensive menu and a group of 4 of us all loved what we ordered. The service is friendly and welcoming too. The patio is good for large groups, has cute string lights as well as heaters. We'd definitely go back!

Yelp
Words cannot even begin to describe the pure euphoria I felt eating my first taco from this place while sitting on the beach staring at the Pacific Ocean. Our friends had decided to ride their bikes up there to check it out and thankfully brought us some back with them. I'm normally not a lamb fan, but these tacos are the ultimate exception. Perfect combination of the birria sauce, cilantro, onion and lime. There are quite a few options for condiments as well, extra birria sauce, of course, is one. There was also a chili oil that was quite spicy. You can also get the tacos with other proteins, such as beef. They were so good we went back a few days later to eat our breakfast/lunch there before we left to drive back home. I will say the second time they weren't as good. Now, I don't know if it was because the second time around we ordered them as quesbirrias instead of regular birria tacos. The quesa part is supposed to be grilled crispy cheese on the outside of the taco. These had soft, melted cheese with another tortilla underneath it which gave it a less desirable texture, and was so messy. I say 100% give this place a try and order the regular birria tacos. Maybe it was the beach, sand, alcohol combination that made these tacos so good the first time. I'm definitely going to find out next time I'm back in San Diego.

Yelp
I was really excited to have a quesabirria -- and this one was good, but not amazing. So much grease in this item, which I know is expected when ordering such a thing, but this felt excessive. Perhaps the grease leaking through everything was due to it being a delivery which may be unfair for a review. But still, way too much grease... it was a fun treat and the consomé to dip it in was delicious, but I probably won't be back for this. I wanted to get a good sense of this restaurant otherwise so I ordered four types of their street tacos: pollo, Al pastor, chorizo and steak. Honestly, they were all dry and none of them were very good. The steak was probably the best. I also asked for extra limes but wasn't given any, they gave a couple lemon wedges instead & they didn't have any chips and salsa or pickled veggies. I feel like limes, chips and salsa, and pickled veggies are a staple at every Mexican food place, so this was disappointing. Everything is packaged in styrofoam as well. All in all I think the quesabirria with consomé could a fun treat to have very rarely (definitely on a cheat day), but considering everything I listed as well as the price, don't think I'll be back to this restaurant. Will continue my search for my go-to taco place in San Diego.

Yelp
First time here. Of course, I had to order the beef birria plate. It was good but not as good as I was expecting based on the reviews. Nothing on my plate stood out. My dining partner had a similar experience with her fish tacos. They have a good sized menu and I'd like to try other things before giving my final review of this place. I will be back one day, but probably not for birria.

Yelp
This is the second time I've been to this restaurant and both times the food was amazing! The first time I had the Birria tacos, and it was the first time I've ever had them and my experience was above and beyond the food, the service and the environment. This time I had the rolled tacos and they were so good! We took them to go so we could sit by the beach and eat our dinner and the service was fast and seamless. I recommend this be on your list of places to eat at in San Diego!

Yelp
After all the good reviews I was so excited to try this place, I was hungry and craving birria so bad and I ended up so disappointed... there's no flavor in the meat, the tortillas are really thick and soft and I don't understand why the quesabirria have 2 tortillas it make it impossible to eat. The only good thing about this is the favor birria sauce/oil base and the consome which is no the best but it saves the tacos a little bit. There's better birria places around San Diego but if you haven't try an authentic Mexican birria you might be okay with this place. Consome: 4/5 Beef birria taco: 3/5 Lamb birria taco: 2/5 Quesabirria: 2/5

Yelp
It is genuinely hard is this modern era to find both genuine & delicious Birrieria. Birrieria & Taqueria La Huasteca is the real deal & I highly recommend this spot. Come hungry.
